On the "Multiple of the Inclusion Plus Compact" Problem

The ``multiple of the inclusion plus compact problem'' which was posed by T.W. Gowers in 1996 and Th. Schlumprecht in 2003, asks whether for every infinite dimensional Banach space $X$ there exists a closed subspace $Y$ of $X$ and a bounded linear operator from $Y$ to $X$ which is not a compact perturbation of a multiple of the inclusion map from $Y$ to $X$. We give sufficient conditions on the spreading models of seminormalized basic sequences of a Banach space $X$ which guarantee that the ``multiple of the inclusion plus compact'' problem has an affirmative answer for $X$. Our results strengthen a previous result of the first named author, E.~Odell, Th. Schlumprecht and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann as well as a result of Th. Schlumprecht. We give an example of a Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach space where our results apply. For the proof of our main result we use an extension of E. Odell's Schreier unconditionality result for arrays.

Duality for compact group actions on operator algebras and applications: irreducible inclusions and Galois correspondence

We consider compact group actions on C*- and W*- algebras. We prove results that relate the duality property of the action (as defined in the Introduction) with other relevant properties of the system such as the relative commutant of the fixed point algebras being trivial (called the irreducibility of the inclusion) and also to the Galois correspondence between invariant C*-subalgebras containing the fixed point algebra and the class of closed normal subgroups of the compact group.

Algebras of diagonal operators of the form scalar-plus-compact are Calkin algebras

Asymmetric variations of multifunctions with application to functional inclusions

Under certain initial conditions, we prove the existence of set-valued selectors of univariate compact-valued multifunctions of bounded (Jordan) variation when the notion of variation is defined taking into account only the Pompeiu asymmetric excess between compact sets from the target metric space. Summing inclusion maps between symmetric sequence spaces

We prove a substantial extension of a well-known result due to Bennett and Carl: The inclusion of a 2-concave symmetric Banach sequence space E into l_2 is (E,1)-summing, i.e. for every unconditionally summable sequence (x_n) in E the scalar sequence (||x_n||_2) is contained in E. Guiding potential method for differential inclusions with nonlocal conditions

The existence of solutions of some nonlocal initial value problems for differential inclusions is established. The guiding potential method is used and the topological degree theory for admissible multivalued vector fields is applied. We develop an idempotent version of probabilistic potential theory. The goal is to describe the set of max-plus harmonic functions, which give the stationary solutions of deterministic optimal control problems with additive reward. Structure of the solution set to Volterra integral inclusions and applications

The topological and geometric structure of the solution set to Volterra integral inclusions in Banach spaces is investigated. It is shown that the set of solutions in the sense of Aumann integral is nonempty compact acyclic in the space of continuous functions or is even an $R_δ$-set provided some appropriate conditions on the Banach space are imposed. Applications to the periodic problem for this type of inclusions are given.

Four proofs of cocompacness for Sobolev embeddings

Cocompactness is a property of embeddings between two Banach spaces, similar to but weaker than compactness, defined relative to some non-compact group of bijective isometries. In presence of a cocompact embedding, bounded sequences (in the domain space) have subsequences that can be represented as a sum of a well-structured "bubble decomposition" (or defect of compactness) plus a remainder vanishing in the target space. This note is an exposition of different proofs of cocompactness for Sobolev-type embeddings, which employ methods of classical PDE, potential theory, and harmonic analysis.
