Duality for compact group actions on operator algebras and applications: irreducible inclusions and Galois correspondence

Inclusions of simple $C^*$-algebras

We prove that if a conditional expectation from a simple $C^*$-algebra onto its $C^*$-subalgebra satisfies the Pimsner-Popa inequality, there exists a quasi-basis. As an application, we establish the Galois correspondence for outer actions of finite groups (and more generally finite dimensional Kac algebras) on simple $C^*$-algebras. We also introduce the notion of sectors for stable simple $C^*$-algebras and purely infinite simple $C^*$-algebras in the Cuntz standard form, and discuss several applications, including their relationship to $K$-theory.

A Galois correspondence for II_1 factors and quantum groupoids

We establish a Galois correspondence for finite quantum groupoid actions on II_1 factors and show that every finite index and finite depth subfactor is an intermediate subalgebra of a quantum groupoid crossed product. Moreover, any such a subfactor is completely and canonically determined by a quantum groupoid and its coideal *-subalgebra. This allows to express the bimodule category of a subfactor in terms of the representation category of a corresponding quantum groupoid and the principal graph as the Bratteli diagram of an inclusion of certain C^*-algebras related to it.

Inclusions of $C^*$-algebras arising from fixed-point algebras

We examine inclusions of $C^*$-algebras of the form $A^H \subseteq A \rtimes_{r} G$, where $G$ and $H$ are groups acting on a unital simple $C^*$-algebra $A$ by outer automorphisms and $H$ is finite. It follows from a theorem of Izumi that $A^H \subseteq A$ is $C^*$-irreducible, in the sense that all intermediate $C^*$-algebras are simple. We show that $A^H \subseteq A \rtimes_{r} G$ is $C^*$-irreducible for all $G$ and $H$ as above if and only if $G$ and $H$ have trivial intersection in the outer automorphisms of $A$, and we give a Galois type classification of all intermediate $C^*$-algebras…

Quantum Galois groups of subfactors

For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise.
