A reflexive hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{ISP}}}$ is presented, such that for every $Y$ infinite dimensional closed subspace of $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{ISP}}}$ and every bounded linear operator $T:Y\rightarrow Y$, the operator $T$ admits a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
In the first part of the paper we present and discuss concepts of local and asymptotic hereditary proximity to \ell_1. The second part is devoted to a complete separation of the hereditary local proximity to \ell_1 from the asymptotic one. More precisely for every countable ordinal ξwe construct a separable reflexive space \mathfrak{X}_ξsuch that every infinite dimensional subspace of it has Bourgain \ell_1-index greater than ω^ξand the space itself has no \ell_1-spreading model. We also present a reflexive HI space admitting no \ell_p as a spreading model.
In this paper we study the reflexivity of a unital strongly closed algebra of operators with complemented invariant subspace lattice on a Banach space. We prove that if such an algebra contains a complete Boolean algebra of projections of finite uniform multiplicity and with the direct sum property, then it is reflexive, i.e. it contains every operator that leaves invariant every closed subspace in the invariant subspace lattice of the algebra. In particular, such algebras coincide with their bicommutant.
We show that for any probability measure μthere exists an equivalent norm on the space L^1(μ) whose restriction to each reflexive subspace is uniformly smooth and uniformly convex, with modulus of convexity of power type 2. This renorming provides also an estimate for the corresponding modulus of smoothness of such subspaces.
We prove that the dual or any quotient of a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property has the unconditional tree property. Then we prove that a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis. This solves several long standing open problems. In particular, it yields that a quotient of a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional finite dimensional decomposition embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis.
A hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ is constructed that is the first known example of a $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space not containing $c_0$, $\ell_1$, or reflexive subspaces and answers a question posed by J. Bourgain. Moreover, the space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ satisfies the "scalar-plus-compact" property and it is the first known space without reflexive subspaces having this property. It is constructed using the Bourgain-Delbaen method in combination with a recent version of saturation under constraints in a mixed-Tsirelson setting. As a result, the s…
To describe a set of functions, which forms a reflexive subspace B of the classical Banach space L a special function that characterizes their average integral growth is introduced. It is shown that this function essentially depends on the geometry of B. By the way, one question of la Vallee Poussin is answered. Also a short proof of the known result about the existence of an uncomplemented subspace isomorphic to the Hilbert space in every Lebesgue - Riesz space Lp (1<p<2) is obtained.
A Banach space $X$ is reflexive if the Mackey topology $τ(X^*,X)$ on $X^*$ agrees with the norm topology on $X^*$. Borwein [B] calls a Banach space $X$ {\it sequentially reflexive\/} provided that every $τ(X^*,X)$ convergent {\it sequence\/} in $X^*$ is norm convergent. The main result in [B] is that $X$ is sequentially reflexive if every separable subspace of $X$ has separable dual, and Borwein asks for a characterization of sequentially reflexive spaces. Here we answer that question by proving \proclaim Theorem. {\sl A Banach space $X$ is sequentially reflexive if and only if $\ell_1$ is not…
By a result of Johnson, the Banach space $F=(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_1^n)_{\ell_\infty}$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$. We identify $F$ with a complemented subspace of the space of (bounded, linear) operators on the reflexive space $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_1^n)_{\ell_p}$ ($p\in (1,\infty))$, thus giving a negative answer to the problem posed in the monograph of Diestel and Uhl which asks whether the space of operators on a reflexive Banach space is Grothendieck.
We analyze the ergodic properties of power-bounded operators on a reflexive Banach space of the form "scalar plus compact-power", and show that they are almost periodic (all the orbits are conditionally compact). If such an operator is weakly mixing, then it is stable (its powers converge in the strong operator topology).Let X-ISP be the separable reflexive indecomposable Banach space constructed by Argyros and Motakis, in which every operator has an invariant subspace. We conclude that every power-bounded operator on a closed subspace of X-ISP is almost periodic.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
A new method of defining hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces is presented. This method provides a unified approach for constructing reflexive HI spaces and also HI spaces with no reflexive subspace. All the spaces presented here satisfy the property that the composition of any two strictly singular operators is a compact one. This yields the first known example of a Banach space with no reflexive subspace such that every operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably $\ell_p$ saturated space with $1<p<\infty$ and of a $c_0$ saturated space.
We show that any bounded operator $T$ on a separable, reflexive, infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ admits a rank one perturbation which has an invariant subspace of infinite dimension and codimension. In the non-reflexive spaces, we show that the same is true for operators which have non-eigenvalues in the boundary of their spectrum. In the Hilbert space, our methods produce perturbations that are also small in norm, improving on an old result of Brown and Pearcy.
See title. (A Banach space is said to be L-embedded if it is complemented in its bidual such that the norm between the two complementary subspaces is additive.)
In contrast to the subspaces of all $C$-symmetric operators, we show that the subspaces of all skew-C symmetric operators are reflexive and even hyperreflexive with the constant $κ(\C^s)\leqslant 3$.
We show that the predual of a JBW$^*$-triple has the weak Banach-Saks property, that is, reflexive subspaces of a JBW$^*$-triple predual are super-reflexive. We also prove that JBW$^*$-triple preduals satisfy the Komlós property (which can be considered an abstract version of the weak law of large numbers). The results rely on two previous papers from which we infer the fact that, like in the classical case of $L^1$, a subspace of a JBW$^*$-triple predual contains $\ell_1$ as soon as it contains uniform copies of $\ell_1^n$.
The main result of this paper is that every non-reflexive subspace $Y$ of $L_1[0,1]$ fails the fixed point property for closed, bounded, convex subsets $C$ of $Y$ and nonexpansive (or contractive) mappings on $C$. Combined with a theorem of Maurey we get that for subspaces $Y$ of $L_1[0,1]$, $Y$ is reflexive if and only if $Y$ has the fixed point property. For general Banach spaces the question as to whether reflexivity implies the fixed point property and the converse question are both still open.
The method of compatible sequences is introduced in order to produce non-trivial (closed) invariant subspaces of (bounded linear) operators. Also a topological tool is used which is new in the search of invariant subspaces: the extraction of continuous selections of lower semicontinuous set valued functions. The advantage of this method over previously known methods is that if an operator acts on a reflexive Banach space then it has a non-trivial invariant subspace if and only if there exist compatible sequences (their definition refers to a fixed operator). Using compatible sequences a result…
We show that a reflexive subspace of the predual of a von Neumann algebra embeds into a noncommutative Lp space for some p>1. This is a noncommutative version of Rosenthal's result for commutative Lp spaces. Similarly for 1 < q < 2, an infinite dimensional subspace X of a noncommutative Lq space either contains lq or embeds in Lp for some q < p < 2. The novelty in the noncommutative setting is a double sided change of density.
We show that, if $M$ is a subspace lattice with the property that the rank one subspace of its operator algebra is weak* dense, $L$ is a commutative subspace lattice and $P$ is the lattice of all projections on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space, then the lattice $L\otimes M\otimes P$ is reflexive. If $M$ is moreover an atomic Boolean subspace lattice while $L$ is any subspace lattice, we provide a concrete lattice theoretic description of $L\otimes M$ in terms of projection valued functions defined on the set of atoms of $M$. As a consequence, we show that the Lattice Tensor Produ…
A Fréchet space $X$ satisfies the Hereditary Invariant Subspace (resp. Subset) Property if for every closed infinite-dimensional subspace $M$ in $X$, each continuous operator on $M$ possesses a non-trivial invariant subspace (resp. subset). In this paper, we exhibit a family of non-normable separable infinite-dimensional Fréchet spaces satisfying the Hereditary Invariant Subspace Property and we show that many non-normable Fréchet spaces do not satisfy this property. We also state sufficient conditions for the existence of a continuous operator without non-trivial invariant subset and deduce a…
Let $\mathfrak A$ be a maximal subdiagonal algebra in a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$. If every right invariant subspace of $\mathfrak A$ in the non-commutative Hardy space $H^2$ is of Beurling type, then we say $\mathfrak A$ to be type 1. We determine generators of these algebras and consider a Riesz type factorization theorem for the non-commutative $H^1$ space. We show that the right analytic Toeplitz algebra on the non-commutative Hardy space $H^p$ associated with a type 1 subdiagonal algebra with multiplicity 1 is hereditary reflexive.
The main results of the paper: {\bf (1)} The dual Banach space $X^*$ contains a linear subspace $A\subset X^*$ such that the set $A^{(1)}$ of all limits of weak$^*$ convergent bounded nets in $A$ is a proper norm-dense subset of $X^*$ if and only if $X$ is a non-quasi-reflexive Banach space containing an infinite-dimensional subspace with separable dual. {\bf (2)} Let $X$ be a non-reflexive Banach space. Then there exists a convex subset $A\subset X^*$ such that $A^{(1)}\neq {\bar{A}\,}^*$ (the latter denotes the weak$^*$ closure of $A$). {\bf (3)} Let $X$ be a quasi-reflexive Banach space and…
We define the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, and relate it to a) the mean ergodic projection on the space of fixed points of a semigroup of contractions, b) results on Korovkin sets from the 70's, and c) extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. We use this concept to address the recent conjecture that the Gurarij space and the spaces $L_p$, $p \notin 2\mathbb N+4$ are the only separable Approximately Ultrahomogeneous Banach spaces (a certain multidimensional transitivity of the action of the linear isometry group). The similar conjecture for Fraïssé B…
The hyperbolic algebra A_h, studied recently by Katavolos and Power, is the weak star closed operator algebra on L^2(R) generated by H^\infty(R), as multiplication operators, and by the dilation operators V_t, t \geq 0, given by V_t f(x) = e^{t/2} f(e^t x). We show that A_h is a reflexive operator algebra and that the four dimensional manifold Lat A_h (with the natural topology) is the reflexive hull of a natural two dimensional subspace.
We show that, if $X$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $E$ and $Z$ is a closed subspace of $E^*$ such that $Z$ is norming for $X$ and $X$ is total over $Z$ (as well as $X$ is norming for $Z$ and $Z$ is total over $X$), then $X$ and the pre-annihilator of $Z$ are complemented in $E$ whenever $Z$ is $w^*$-closed or $X$ is reflexive.
A theorem of Giesy and James states that $c_0$ is finitely representable in James' quasi-reflexive Banach space $J_2$. We extend this theorem to the $p$th quasi-reflexive James space $J_p$ for each $p \in (1,\infty)$. As an application, we obtain a new closed ideal of operators on $J_p$, namely the closure of the set of operators that factor through the complemented subspace $(\ell_\infty^1 \oplus \ell_\infty^2 \oplus...\oplus \ell_\infty^n \oplus...)_{\ell_p}$ of $J_p$.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators on a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators on a real Hilbert space.
The parabolic algebra was introduced by Katavolos and Power, in 1997, as the operator algebra acting on $L^2(R)$ that is weakly generated by the translation and multiplication semigroups. In particular, they proved that this algebra is reflexive and is equal to the Fourier binest algebra, that is, to the algebra of operators that leave invariant the subspaces of the Volterra nest and its analytic counterpart. We prove that a similar result holds for the corresponding algebras acting on $L^p(R)$, where $1<p<\infty$. It is also shown that the reflexive closures of the Fourier binests on $L^p(R)$…
We prove that if X is a separable, reflexive space which is asymptotic l_p, then X embeds into a reflexive space Z having an asymptotic l_p finite-dimensional decomposition. This result leads to an intrinsic characterization of subspaces of spaces with an asymptotic l_p FDD. More general results of this type are also obtained.
A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the…
Let $U$ and $V$ be vector spaces over a field $\mathbb{K}$, and $\mathcal{S}$ be an $n$-dimensional linear subspace of $\mathcal{L}(U,V)$. The space $\mathcal{S}$ is called algebraically reflexive whenever it contains every linear map $g : U \rightarrow V$ such that, for all $x \in U$, there exists $f \in \mathcal{S}$ with $g(x)=f(x)$. A theorem of Meshulam and Šemrl states that if $\mathcal{S}$ is not algebraically reflexive then it contains a non-zero operator $f$ of rank at most $2n-2$, provided that $\mathbb{K}$ has more than $n+2$ elements. In this article, we prove that the provision on …
This paper deals with study of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of a linear operator to a subspace of operators defined between arbitrary Banach spaces. In case the domain space is reflexive and the subspace is finite dimensional we obtain a complete characterization. For arbitrary Banach spaces, we obtain the same under some additional conditions. For arbitrary Hilbert space $ \mathbb{H},$ we also study orthogonality to subspace of the space of linear operators $L(\mathbb{H}), $ both with respect to operator norm as well as numerical radius norm.
We present a general method for constructing operators without non-trivial invariant closed subsets on a large class of non-reflexive Banach spaces. In particular, our approach unifies and generalizes several constructions due to Read of operators without non-trivial invariant subspaces on the spaces $\ell_{1}$, $c_{0}$ or $\oplus_{\ell_{2}}J$, and without non-trivial invariant subsets on $\ell_{1}$. We also investigate how far our methods can be extended to the Hilbertian setting, and construct an operator on a quasireflexive dual Banach space which has no non-trivial $w^{*}$-closed invariant…
We study the invariant subspaces of abelian operator algebras of finite split strict multiplicity. We give sufficient conditions for the reflexivity and hereditary reflexivity of these algebras.
In this paper we prove that if $E$ and $F$ are reflexive Banach spaces and $G$ is a closed linear subspace of the space $\mathcal{P}_{w}(^{n}E;F)$ of all $n$-homogeneous polynomials from $E$ to $F$ which are weakly continuous on bounded sets, then $G$ is either reflexive or non-isomorphic to a dual space. This result generalizes \cite[Theorem 2]{FEDER} and gives the solution to a problem posed by Feder \cite[Problem 1]{FED}.
Let $X$ be a Banach space and $Y \subseteq X$ be a closed subspace. We prove that if the quotient $X/Y$ is weakly Lindelöf determined or weak Asplund, then for every $w^*$-convergent sequence $(y_n^*)_{n\in \mathbb N}$ in $Y^*$ there exist a subsequence $(y_{n_k}^*)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ and a $w^*$-convergent sequence $(x_k^*)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ in $X^*$ such that $x_k^*|_Y=y_{n_k}^*$ for all $k\in \mathbb N$. As an application we obtain that $Y$ is Grothendieck whenever $X$ is Grothendieck and $X/Y$ is reflexive, which answers a question raised by González and Kania.
Given a Banach space $E$, we ask which closed subspaces may be realised as the kernel of a bounded operator $E \rightarrow E$. We prove some positive results which imply in particular that when $E$ is separable every closed subspace is a kernel. Moreover, we show that there exists a Banach space $E$ which contains a closed subspace that cannot be realized as the kernel of any bounded operator on $E$. This implies that the Banach algebra $\mathcal{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ fails to be weak*-topologically left Noetherian. The Banach space $E$ that we use is the dual of Wark's non-separa…
The notion of linear Hahn-Banach extension operator was first studied in detail by Heinrich and Mankiewicz (1982). Previously, J. Lindenstrauss (1966) studied similar versions of this notion in the context of non separable reflexive Banach spaces. Subsequently, Sims and Yost (1989) proved the existence of linear Hahn-Banach extension operators via interspersing subspaces in a purely Banach space theoretic set up. In this paper, we study similar questions in the context of Banach modules and module homomorphisms, in particular, Banach algebras of operators on Banach spaces. Based on Dales, Kani…
G. Godefroy asked whether, on any Banach space, the set of norm-attaining functionals contains a 2-dimensional linear subspace. We prove that a recent construction due to C.J. Read provides an example of a space which does not have this property. This is done through a study of the relation between the following two sentences where X is a Banach space and Y is a closed subspace of finite codimension in X: (A) Y is proximinal in X. (B) The annihilator of Y consists of norm-attaining functionals. We prove that these are equivalent if X is the Read's space. Moreover, we prove that any non-reflexi…
For a countable ordinal a we denote by C_a the class of separable, reflexive Banach spaces whose Szlenk index and the Szlenk index of their dual are bounded by a. We show that each C_a admits a separable, reflexive universal space. We also show that spaces in the class C_{omega^{a*omega}} embed into spaces of the same class with a basis. As a consequence we deduce that each C_a is analytic in the Effros-Borel structure of subspaces of C[0,1].
The methods of "minimal vectors" were introduced by Ansari and Enflo and strengthened by Pearcy, in order to prove the existence of hyperinvariant subspaces for certain operators on Hilbert space. In this note we present the method of minimal vectors for operators on super-reflexive Banach spaces and we give a new sufficient condition for the existence of hyperinvariant subspaces of certain operators on these spaces.
We characterize non-reflexive Banach spaces by a low-distortion (resp. isometric) embeddability of a certain metric graph up to a renorming. Also we study non-linear sufficient conditions for $\ell_1^n$ being $(1+\varepsilon)$-isomorphic to a subspace of a Banach space $X$.
For $1\le p <\infty$, we present a reflexive Banach space $\mathfrak{X}^{(p)}_{\text{awi}}$, with an unconditional basis, that admits $\ell_p$ as a unique asymptotic model and does not contain any Asymptotic $\ell_p$ subspaces. D. Freeman, E. Odell, B. Sari and B. Zheng have shown that whenever a Banach space not containing $\ell_1$, in particular a reflexive Banach space, admits $c_0$ as a unique asymptotic model then it is Asymptotic $c_0$. These results provide a complete answer to a problem posed by L. Halbeisen and E. Odell and also complete a line of inquiry of the relation between speci…
The representer theorem is one of the most important mathematical foundations for regularised learning and kernel methods. Classical formulations of the theorem state sufficient conditions under which a regularisation problem on a Hilbert space admits a solution in the subspace spanned by the representers of the data points. This turns the problem into an equivalent optimisation problem in a finite dimensional space, making it computationally tractable. Moreover, Banach space methods for learning have been receiving more and more attention. Considering the representer theorem in Banach spaces …
For $i=1,2$, let $E_i$ be a reflexive Banach lattice over $\mathbb{R}$ with a certain parameter $λ^+(E_i)>1$, let $K_i$ be a locally compact (Hausdorff) topological space and let $\mathcal{H}_i$ be a closed subspace of $\mathcal{C}_0(K_i, E_i)$ such that each point of the Choquet boundary $\mathcal{Ch}_{\mathcal{H}_i} K_i$ of $\mathcal{H}_i$ is a weak peak point. We show that if there exists an isomorphism $T\colon \mathcal{H}_1 \to \mathcal{H}_2$ with $\Vert T \Vert \cdot \Vert T^{-1} \Vert<\min \lbrace λ^+(E_1), λ^+(E_2) \rbrace$ such that $T$ and $T^{-1}$ preserve positivity, then $\mathcal…
Let $(e_i)_i$ denote the unit vector basis of $\ell_p$, $1\leq p< \infty$, or $c_0$. We construct a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis that admits $(e_i)_i$ as a uniformly unique spreading model while it has no subspace with a unique asymptotic model, and hence it has no asymptotic-$\ell_p$ or $c_0$ subspace. This solves a problem of E. Odell. We also construct a space with a unique $\ell_1$ spreading model and no subspace with a uniformly unique $\ell_1$ spreading model. These results are achieved with the utilization of a new version of the method of saturation under constrai…
We deal with isomorphic Banach-Stone type theorems for closed subspaces of vector-valued continuous functions. Let $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$. For $i=1,2$, let $E_i$ be a reflexive Banach space over $\mathbb{F}$ with a certain parameter $λ(E_i)>1$, which in the real case coincides with the Schaffer constant of $E_i$, let $K_i$ be a locally compact (Hausdorff) topological space and let $\mathcal{H}_i$ be a closed subspace of $\mathcal{C}_0(K_i, E_i)$ such that each point of the Choquet boundary $\mathcal{Ch}_{\mathcal{H}_i} K_i$ of $\mathcal{H}_i$ is a weak peak point. We show that…
Given a linear transformation $A$ on a finite-dimensional complex vector space $\eV$, in this paper we study the group $\Col(A)$ consisting of those invertible linear transformations $S$ on $\eV$ for which the mapping $Φ_S$ defined as $Φ_S\colon \eM\mapsto S\eM$ is an automorphism of the lattice $\Lat(A)$ of all invariant subspaces of $A$. By using the primary decomposition of $A$, we first reduce the problem of characterizing $\Col(A)$ to the problem of characterizing the group $\Col(N)$ of a given nilpotent linear transformation $N$. While $\Col(N)$ always contains all invertible linear tran…
