Recently an operator space version of type and cotype, namely type $(p,H)$ and cotype $(q,H)$ of operator spaces for $1\leq p \leq 2\leq q \leq \infty$ and a subquadratic and homogeneous Hilbetian operator space $H$ were introduced and investigated by the author. In this paper we define weak type $(2,H)$ (resp. weak cotype $(2,H)$) of operator spaces, which lies strictly between type $(2,H)$ (resp. cotype $(2,H)$) and type $(p,H)$ for all $1\leq p <2$ (resp. cotype $(q,H)$ for all $2<q \leq \infty$). This is an analogue of weak type 2 and weak cotype 2 in the Banach space case, so we develop analogous equivalent formulations. We also consider weak-$H$ space, spaces with weak type $(2,H)$ and weak cotype $(2,H^*)$ simultaneously and establish corresponding equivalent formulations.
We consider two operator space versions of type and cotype, namely $S_p$-type, $S_q$-cotype and type $(p,H)$, cotype $(q,H)$ for a homogeneous Hilbertian operator space $H$ and $1\leq p \leq 2 \leq q\leq \infty$, generalizing "$OH$-cotype 2" of G. Pisier. We compute type and cotype of some Hilbertian operator spaces and $L_p$ spaces, and we investigate the relationship between a homogeneous Hilbertian space $H$ and operator spaces with cotype $(2,H)$. As applications we consider operator space versions of generalized little Grothendieck's theorem and Maurey's extension theorem in terms of thes…
Several characterizations of weak cotype 2 and weak Hilbert spaces are given in terms of basis constants and other structural invariants of Banach spaces. For finite-dimensional spaces, characterizations depending on subspaces of fixed proportional dimension are proved.
Cotype is used in this paper to prove new results concerning the existence of non-absolutely summing linear operators between Banach spaces. We derive consequences that extend/generalize/ complement some classic results. We also point out that some of our results are sharp.
We show that for any operator $T:l_\infty^N\to Y$, where $Y$ is a Banach space, that its cotype 2 constant, $K_2(T)$, is related to its $(2,1)$-summing norm, $π_{2,1}(T)$, by $K_2(T) \le c \log\log N π_{2,1}(T) $. Thus, we can show that there is an operator $T:C(K)\to Y$ that has cotype 2, but is not 2-summing.
The aim of this paper is to start the study of multilinear generalizations of the classical ideals of linear operators of type $p$ and cotype $q$. As a first step in a theory we believe will be long and fruitful, we propose a notion of type and cotype of multilinear operators and the resulting classes of such mappings are studied in the setting of the theory of Banach/quasi-Banach ideals of multilinear operators. Distinctions between the linear and the multilinear theories are pointed out, typical multilinear features of the theory are emphasized and many illustrative examples are provided. Th…
Given an infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ and a Banach space $Y$ with no finite cotype, we determine whether or not every continuous linear operator from $X$ to $Y$ is absolutely $(q;p)$-summing for almost all choices of $p$ and $q$, including the case $p=q$. If $X$ assumes its cotype, the problem is solved for all choices of $p$ and $q$. Applications to the theory of dominated multilinear mappings are also provided.
We will prove an abstract comparision principle which translates gaussian cotype in Rademacher cotype conditions and vice versa. More precisely, let $2\!<\!q\!<\!\infty$ and $T:\,C(K)\,\to\,F$ a linear, continous operator. T is of gaussian cotype q if and only if ( \summ_1^n (\frac{|| Tx_k||_F}{\sqrt{\log(k+1)}})^q )^{1/q} \, \le c || \summ_1^n \varepsilon_k x_k ||_{L_2(C(K))} , for all sequences with $(|| Tx_k ||)_1^n$ decreasing. T is of Rademacher cotype q if and only if (\summ_1^n (|| Tx_k||_F \,\sqrt{\log(k+1)})^q )^{1/q} \, \le c || \summ_1^n g_k x_k ||_{L_2(C(K))} , for all sequences wi…
Grothendieck's theorem asserts that every continuous linear operator from $\ell_1$ to $\ell_2$ is absolutely $(1,1)$-summing. This kind of result is commonly called coincidence result. In this paper we investigate coincidence results in the multilinear setting, showing how the cotype of the spaces involved affect such results. The special role played by $\ell_1$ spaces is also investigated with relation to interpolation of tensor products. In particular, an open problem on the interpolation of $m$ injective tensor products is solved.
A famous result due to Grothendieck asserts that every continuous linear operator from $\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolutely $(1,1)$-summing. If $n\geq2,$ however, it is very simple to prove that every continuous $n$-linear operator from $\ell_{1}\times...\times\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolutely $(1;1,...,1) $-summing, and even absolutely $(\frac{2}% {n};1,...,1) $-summing$.$ In this note we deal with the following problem: Given a positive integer $n\geq2$, what is the best constant $g_{n}>0$ so that every $n$-linear operator from $\ell_{1}\times...\times\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolut…
The concepts of Riesz type and cotype of a given Banach space are extended to a non-commutative setting. First, the Banach space is replaced by an operator space. The notion of quantized orthonormal system, which plays the role of the orthonormal system in the classical setting, is then defined. The Fourier type and cotype of an operator space with respect to a non-commutative compact group fit in this context. Also, the quantized analogs of Rademacher and Gaussian systems are treated. All this is used to obtain an operator space version of the classical theorem of Kwapień characterizing Hilbe…
In this paper we consider Fourier multiplier operators between vector-valued Besov spaces with different integrability exponents $p$ and $q$, which depend on the type $p$ and cotype $q$ of the underlying Banach spaces. In a previous paper we considered $L^p$-$L^q$-multiplier theorems. In the current paper we show that in the Besov scale one can obtain results with optimal integrability exponents. Moreover, we derive a sharp result in the $L^p$-$L^q$-setting as well. We consider operator-valued multipliers without smoothness assumptions. The results are based on a Fourier multiplier theorem for…
Let $\on_{k \in \nz}$ be an orthonormal system on some $σ$-finite measure space $(\Om,p)$. We study the notion of cotype with respect to $Φ$ for an operator $T$ between two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, defined by $\fco T := \inf$ $c$ such that \[ \Tfmm \pl \le \pl c \pll \gmm \hspace{.7cm}\mbox{for all}\hspace{.7cm} (x_k)\subset X \pl,\] where $(g_k)_{k\in \nz}$ is a sequence of independent and normalized gaussian variables. It is shown that this $Φ$-cotype coincides with the usual notion of cotype $2$ iff \linebreak $\fco {I_{\lin}} \sim \sqrt{\frac{n}{\log (n+1)}}$ uniformly in $n$ iff there i…
We introduce asymptotic analogues of the Rademacher and martingale type and cotype of Banach spaces and operators acting on them. Some classical local theory results related, for example, to the `automatic-type' phenomenon, the type-cotype duality, or the Maurey-Pisier theorem, are extended to the asymptotic setting. We also investigate operator ideals corresponding to the asymptotic subtype/subcotype. As an application of this theory, we provide a sharp version of a result of Brooker and Lancien by showing that any twisted sum of Banach spaces with Szlenk power types $p$ and $q$ has Szlenk po…
We give a simple proof of Bourgain's disc algebra version of Grothendieck's theorem, i.e. that every operator on the disc algebra with values in $L_1$ or $L_2$ is 2-absolutely summing and hence extends to an operator defined on the whole of $C$. This implies Bourgain's result that $L_1/H^1$ is of cotype 2. We also prove more generally that $L_r/H^r$ is of cotype 2 for $0<r< 1$.
In this paper we develop the theory of Fourier multiplier operators $T_{m}:L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d};X)\to L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{d};Y)$, for Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, $1\leq p\leq q\leq \infty$ and $m:\mathbb{R}^d\to \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$ an operator-valued symbol. The case $p=q$ has been studied extensively since the 1980's, but far less is known for $p<q$. In the scalar setting one can deduce results for $p<q$ from the case $p=q$. However, in the vector-valued setting this leads to restrictions both on the smoothness of the multiplier and on the class of Banach spaces. For example, one often needs that …
A Banach space X has the SHAI (surjective homomorphisms are injective) property provided that for every Banach space Y, every continuous surjective algebra homomorphism from the bounded linear operators on X onto the bounded linear operators on Y is injective. The main result gives a sufficient condition for X to have the SHAI property. The condition is satisfied for L^p (0, 1) for 1 < p < \infty, spaces with symmetric bases that have finite cotype, and the Schatten p-spaces for 1 < p < \infty.
It is well known in Banach space theory that for a finite dimensional space $E$ there exists a constant $c_E$, such that for all sequences $(x_k)_k \subset E$ one has \[ \summ_k \noo x_k \rrm \kl c_E \pl \sup_{\eps_k \pm 1} \noo \summ_k \eps_k x_k \rrm \pl .\] Moreover, if $E$ is of dimension $n$ the constant $c_E$ ranges between $\sqrt{n}$ and $n$. This implies that absolute convergence and unconditional convergence only coincide in finite dimensional spaces. We will characterize Banach spaces $X$, where the constant $c_E \sim \sqrt{n}$ for all finite dimensional subspaces. More generally, we…
The main result of this paper states that if a Banach space X has the property that every bounded operator from an arbitrary subspace of X into an arbitrary Banach space of cotype 2 extends to a bounded operator on X, then $B(\ell_{\infty},X^*)=Π_2(\ell_{\infty},X^*)$. If in addition X has the Gaussian average property, then it is of type 2. This implies that the same conclusion holds if X has the Gordon-Lewis property (in particular X could be a Banach lattice) or if X is isomorphic to a subspace of a Banach lattice of finite cotype, thus solving the Maurey extension property for these classe…
In the article is introduced a new class of Banach spaces that are called sub B-convex. Namely, a Banach space X is said to be B -convex if it may be represented as a direct sum l_1+ W, where W is B-convex. It will be shown that any separable sub B-convex Banach space X may be almost isometrically embedded in a separable Banach space G(X) of the same cotype as X, which has a series of properties. Namely, G(X) is an approximate envelope, i.e. any separable Banach space which is finitely representable in G(X) may be almost isometrically embedded into G(X); G(X)is almost isotropic; G(X) is existe…
In this paper, we explore the concept of multilinear operators that are multiple almost summing and present a new concept of type and cotype of multilinear operators and investigate the conditions for this new concept to recover the original concept of type and type for multilinear operators. We also show that these classes are Banach multi-ideals and establish the coherence and compatibility of these classes with the generated homogeneous polynomials.
A finite-dimensional analogue of the known Gordon-Lewis constant of a Banach space X is introduced; in its definition are used only finite rank operators. It is shown that there exist Banach spaces such that the standard Gordon-Lewis constant of X is finite and its finite-dimensional analogue GLfin(X) is infinite. Moreover, for any Banach space X of cotype 2 its finite-dimensional constant GLfin(X) is finite too.
We present three methods to construct majorizing measures in various settings. These methods are based on direct constructions of increasing sequences of partitions through a simple exhaustion procedure rather than on the construction of well separated ultrametric subspaces. The first scheme of construction provides a simple unified proof of the Majorizing Measure Theorem for Gaussian processes and of the following fact. If $A,B$ are balanced convex sets in a vector space, and if $A$ is sufficiently convex, a control of the covering numbers $N(A,\varepsilon B)$ for all $\varepsilon>0$ implies …
If $ϕ$ is a submeasure satisfying an appropriate lower estimate we give a quantitative result on the total mass of a measure $μ$ satisfying $0\leμ\leϕ.$ We give a dual result for supermeasures and then use these results to investigate convexity on non-locally convex quasi-Banach lattices. We then show how to use these results to extend some factorization theorems due to Pisier to the setting of quasi-Banach spaces. We conclude by showing that if $X$ is a quasi-Banach space of cotype two then any operator $T:C(Ω)\to X$ is 2-absolutely summing and factors through a Hilbert space and discussing g…
In this paper, we establish $\mathcal B$-valued variational inequalities for differential operators, ergodic averages and symmetric diffusion semigroups under the condition that Banach space $\mathcal B$ has martingale cotype property. These results generalize, on the one hand Pisier and Xu's result on the variational inequalities for $\mathcal B$-valued martingales, on the other hand many classical variational inequalities in harmonic analysis and ergodic theory. Moreover, we show that Rademacher cotype $q$ is necessary for the $\mathcal B$-valued $q$-variational inequalities. As applications…
We provide complete characterizations, on Banach spaces with cotype 2, of those linear operators which happen to be weakly mixing or strongly mixing transformations with respect to some nondegenerate Gaussian measure. These characterizations involve two families of small subsets of the circle: the countable sets, and the so-called sets of uniqueness for Fourier-Stieltjes series. The most interesting part, i.e. the sufficient conditions for weak and strong mixing, is valid on an arbitrary (complex, separable) Fréchet space.
We investigate the norm of sums of independent vector-valued random variables in noncommutative Lp spaces. This allows us to obtain a uniform family of complete embeddings of the Schatten class Sq^n in Sp(lq^m) with optimal order m = n^2. Using these embeddings we show the surprising fact that the sharp type (cotype) index in the sense of operator spaces for Lp[0,1] is min(p,p') (max(p,p')). Similar techniques are used to show that the operator space notions of B-convexity and K-convexity are equivalent.
Let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on $L^p$. We study the rate of growth of the norms of the powers of $T$ under resolvent conditions or Cesàro boundedness assumptions. Actually the relevant properties of $L^p$ spaces in our study are their type and cotype, and for $1<p<\infty$, the fact that they are UMD. Some of the proofs make use of Fourier multipliers on Banach spaces, which explains why UMD spaces come into play.
The abscissas of convergence, uniform convergence and absolute convergence of vector valued Dirichlet series with respect to the original topology and with respect to the weak topology $σ(X,X')$ of a locally convex space $X$, in particular of a Banach space $X$, are compared. The relation of their coincidence with geometric or topological properties of the underlying space $X$ is investigated. Cotype in the context of Banach spaces, and nuclearity and certain topological invariants for Fréchet spaces play a relevant role.
It is shown that a Banach space $E$ has type $p$ if and only for some (all) $d\ge 1$ the Besov space $B_{p,p}^{(\frac1p-\frac12)d}(\R^d;E)$ embeds into the space $\g(L^2(\R^d),E)$ of $\g$-radonifying operators $L^2(\R^d)\to E$. A similar result characterizing cotype $q$ is obtained. These results may be viewed as $E$-valued extensions of the classical Sobolev embedding theorems.
Let $H$ be a Hilbert space. Using Ball's solution of the "complex plank problem" we prove that the following properties of a sequence $a_n>0$ are equivalent: (1) There is a sequence $x_n \in H$ with $\|x_n\|=a_n$, having 0 as a weak cluster point; (2) $\sum_1^\infty a_n^{-2}=\infty$. Using this result we show that a natural idea of generalization of Ball's "complex plank" result to cylinders with $k$-dimensional base fails already for $k=3$. We discuss also generalizations of "weak cluster points" result to other Banach spaces and relations with cotype.
A Banach space $\X$ has the complete continuity property (CCP) if each bounded linear operator from $L_1$ into $\X$ is completely continuous (i.e., maps weakly convergent sequences to norm convergent sequences). The main theorem shows that a Banach space failing the CCP (resp., failing the CCP and failing cotype) has a subspace with a finite dimensional decomposition (resp., basis) which fails the CCP.
In this paper we study $R$-boundedness of operator families $\mathcal{T}\subset \calL(X,Y)$, where $X$ and $Y$ are Banach spaces. Under cotype and type assumptions on $X$ and $Y$ we give sufficient conditions for $R$-boundedness. In the first part we show that certain integral operator are $R$-bounded. This will be used to obtain $R$-boundedness in the case that $\mathcal{T}$ is the range of an operator-valued function $T:\R^d\to \calL(X,Y)$ which is in a certain Besov space $B^{d/r}_{r,1}(\R^d;\calL(X,Y))$. The results will be applied to obtain $R$-boundedness of semigroups and evolution fami…
Let X be a UMD space with type t and cotype q, and let T be a Fourier multiplier operator with a scalar-valued symbol m. If the Mihlin multiplier estimate holds for all partial derivatives of m up to the order n/max(t,q')+1, then T is bounded on the X-valued Bochner spaces. For scalar-valued multipliers, this improves the theorem of Girardi and Weis (J. Funct. Anal., 2003) who required similar assumptions for derivatives up to the order n/r+1, where r is a Fourier-type of X. However, the present method does not apply to operator-valued multipliers, which are also covered by the Girardi-Weis th…
The main purpose of this paper is to study the validity of the Hausdorff-Young inequality for vector-valued functions defined on a non-commutative compact group. The natural context for this research is that of operator spaces. This leads us to formulate a whole new theory of Fourier type and cotype for the category of operator spaces. The present paper is the first step in this program, where the basic theory is presented, the main examples are analyzed and some questions are posed.
This paper studies a new maximal operator introduced by Hytönen, McIntosh and Portal in 2008 for functions taking values in a Banach space. The L^p-boundedness of this operator depends on the range space; certain requirements on type and cotype are present for instance. The original Euclidean definition of the maximal function is generalized to sigma-finite measure spaces with filtrations and the L^p-boundedness is shown not to depend on the underlying measure space or the filtration. Martingale techniques are applied to prove that a weak type inequality is sufficient for L^p-boundedness and a…
It is well-known that in Banach spaces with finite cotype, the $R$-bounded and $γ$-bounded families of operators coincide. If in addition $X$ is a Banach lattice, then these notions can be expressed as square function estimates. It is also clear that $R$-boundedness implies $γ$-boundedness. In this note we show that all other possible inclusions fail. Furthermore, we will prove that $R$-boundedness is stable under taking adjoints if and only if the underlying space is $K$-convex.
We introduce stronger versions of the usual notions of martingale type p <= 2 and cotype q >= 2 of a Banach space X and show that these concepts are equivalent to uniform p-smoothness and q-convexity, respectively. All these are metric concepts, so they depend on the particular norm in X. These concepts allow us to get some more insight into the fine line between X being isomorphic to a uniformly p-smooth space or being uniformly p-smooth itself. Instead of looking at Banach spaces, we consider linear operators between Banach spaces right away. The situation of a Banach space X can be rediscov…
Using notions from the geometry of Banach spaces we introduce square functions $γ(Ω,X)$ for functions with values in an arbitrary Banach space $X$. We show that they have very convenient function space properties comparable to the Bochner norm of $L_2(Ω,H)$ for a Hilbert space $H$. In particular all bounded operators $T$ on $H$ can be extended to $γ(Ω,X)$ for all Banach spaces $X$. Our main applications are characterizations of the $H^{\infty}$--calculus that extend known results for $L_p$--spaces from \cite{CowlingDoustMcIntoshYagi}. With these square function estimates we show, e. g., that a…
We prove that for every Banach space $Y$, the Besov spaces of functions from the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space to $Y$ agree with suitable local approximation spaces with equivalent norms. In addition, we prove that the Sobolev spaces of type $q$ are continuously embedded in the Besov spaces of the same type if and only if $Y$ has martingale cotype $q$. We interpret this as an extension of earlier results of Xu (1998), and Martínez, Torrea and Xu (2006). These two results combined give the characterization that $Y$ admits an equivalent norm with modulus of convexity of power type $q$ if and o…
Let $A$ and $B$ be $f$-algebras with unit elements $e_{A}$ and $e_{B}$ respectively. A positive operator $T$ from $A$ to $B$ satisfying $T\left( e_{A}\right) =e_{B}$ is called a Markov operator. In this definition we replace unit elements with weak order units and, in this case, call $T$ to be a weak Markov operator. In this paper, we characterize extreme points of the weak Markov operators.
Recently, J. H'michane et al. introduced the class of weak* Dunford-Pettis operators on Banach spaces, that is, operators which send weakly compact sets onto limited sets. In this paper the domination problem for weak* Dunford-Pettis operators is considered. Let $S, T:E\rightarrow F$ be two positive operators between Banach lattices $E$ and $F$ such that $0\leq S\leq T$. We show that if $T$ is a weak$^{*}$ Dunford-Pettis operator and $F$ is $σ$-Dedekind complete, then $S$ itself is weak* Dunford-Pettis.
We present the weighted weak group inverse, which is a new generalized inverse of operators between two Hilbert spaces, introduced to extend weak group inverse for square matrices. Some characterizations and representations of the weighted weak group inverse are investigated. We also apply these results to define and study the weak group inverse for a Hilbert space operator. Using the weak group inverse, we define and characterize various binary relations.
This paper discusses the existence of a sufficient condition for an operator to be weakly hypercyclic. We establish a weak hypercyclicity criterion, and thereupon we can answer questions 5.3 and 5.8 posed by Chan and Sanders in 2004. Lastly, we show that for specific type of composition operator, weak hypercyclicity and hypercyclicity are equivalent.
Let $K$ be an absolutely convex infinite-dimensional compact in a Banach space $\mathcal{X}$. The set of all bounded linear operators $T$ on $\mathcal{X}$ satisfying $TK\supset K$ is denoted by $G(K)$. Our starting point is the study of the closure $WG(K)$ of $G(K)$ in the weak operator topology. We prove that $WG(K)$ contains the algebra of all operators leaving $\overline{\lin(K)}$ invariant. More precise results are obtained in terms of the Kolmogorov $n$-widths of the compact $K$. The obtained results are used in the study of operator ranges and operator equations.
By a theorem of Bayart, $φ$ generates a bounded composition operator on the Hardy space $\Hp$of Dirichlet series ($1\le p<\infty$) only if $φ(s)=c_0 s+ψ(s)$, where $c_0$ is a nonnegative integer and $ψ$ a Dirichlet series with the following mapping properties: $ψ$ maps the right half-plane into the half-plane $\Real s >1/2$ if $c_0=0$ and is either identically zero or maps the right half-plane into itself if $c_0$ is positive. It is shown that the $n$th approximation numbers of bounded composition operators on $\Hp$ are bounded below by a constant times $r^n$ for some $0<r<1$ when $c_0=0$ and …
In this paper we introduce the notion of weak 2-positivity and present some examples. We establish some operator Cauchy--Schwarz inequalities involving the geometric mean and give some applications. In particular, we present some operator versions of Hua's inequality by using the Choi--Davis--Jensen inequality.
We continue our study of operator algebras with contractive approximate identities (cais) by presenting a couple of interesting examples of operator algebras with cais, which in particular answer questions raised in previous papers in this series, for example about whether, roughly speaking, `weak compactness' of an operator algebra, or the lack of it, can be seen in the spectra of its elements.
We show that in the space of nuclear operators from $\ell^q(Λ)$ to $\ell^p(J)$ the two natural ways of measuring weak non-compactness coincide. We also provide explicit formulas for these measures. As a consequence the same is proved for preduals of atomic von Neumann algebras.
In this paper the notion of an abstract square function (estimate) is introduced as an operator X to gamma (H; Y), where X, Y are Banach spaces, H is a Hilbert space, and gamma(H; Y) is the space of gamma-radonifying operators. By the seminal work of Kalton and Weis, this definition is a coherent generalisation of the classical notion of square function appearing in the theory of singular integrals. Given an abstract functional calculus (E, F, Phi) on a Banach space X, where F (O) is an algebra of scalar-valued functions on a set O, we define a square function Phi_gamma(f) for certain H-valued…
We prove a Boyd-type interpolation result for noncommutative maximal operators of restricted weak type. Our result positively answers an open question posed recently by Bekjan, Chen and Osekowski. As a special case, we find a restricted weak type version of the noncommutative Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem, due to Junge and Xu, with interpolation constant of optimal order.
Several recent papers investigated lattice copies and unbounded convergences in Banach lattices. In this paper, we first solve the problem of RV and LA which is an extension of the well-known James distortion theorem. Using lattice copies and unbounded convergence, then we introduce weak L- and M-weakly compact operators on Banach lattices and research the relationship between these operators and L- and M-weakly compact operators. Finally, we study the compactness of weak L-weakly compact and weak M-weakly compact operators.
In this paper, we characterize Banach lattices on which each Dunford-Pettis operator (or weak Dunford-Pettis) is unbounded absolute weak Dunford-Pettis operator and the converse.
