Let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on $L^p$. We study the rate of growth of the norms of the powers of $T$ under resolvent conditions or Cesàro boundedness assumptions. Actually the relevant properties of $L^p$ spaces in our study are their type and cotype, and for $1<p<\infty$, the fact that they are UMD. Some of the proofs make use of Fourier multipliers on Banach spaces, which explains why UMD spaces come into play.
In this paper we consider a notion of a generalized resolvent for a pair of commuting isometric operators in a Hilbert space $H$. Characteristic properties of the generalized resolvent are obtained.
In this paper we obtain some slight correction and generalization of the results of Ryabtseva on the generalized resolvents for isometric operators with a gap in their spectrum. Also, analogs of some McKelvey's results and a short proof of Inin's formula for the generalized resolvents of an isometric operator are obtained.
In this paper we study invertible extensions of a symmetric operator in a Hilbert space $H$. All such extensions are characterized by a parameter in the generalized Neumann's formulas. Generalized resolvents, which are generated by the invertible extensions, are extracted by a boundary condition among all generalized resolvents in the Shtraus formula.
Monotone operators, especially in the form of subdifferential operators, are of basic importance in optimization. It is well known since Minty, Rockafellar, and Bertsekas-Eckstein that in Hilbert space, monotone operators can be understood and analyzed from the alternative viewpoint of firmly nonexpansive mappings, which were found to be precisely the resolvents of monotone operators. For example, the proximal mappings in the sense of Moreau are precisely the resolvents of subdifferential operators. More general notions of "resolvent", "proximal mapping" and "firmly nonexpansive" have been stu…
In this paper we discuss the relationship between the numerical range of an extensive class of unbounded operator functions and the joint numerical range of the operator coefficients. Furthermore, we derive methods on how to find estimates of the joint numerical range. Those estimates are used to obtain explicitly computable enclosures of the numerical range of the operator function and resolvent estimates. The enclosure and upper estimate of the norm of the resolvent are optimal given the estimate of the joint numerical range.
This paper is devoted to the inverse generator problem in the setting of generators of integrated resolvent operator functions. It is shown that if the operator $A$ is the generator of a tempered $β$-times integrated $α$-resolvent operator function ($(α,β)$-ROF) and it is injective, then the inverse operator $A^{-1}$ is the generator of a tempered $(α,γ)$-ROF for all $γ> β+1/2,$ by means of an explicit representation of the integrated resolvent operator function based in Bessel functions of first kind. Analytic resolvent operator functions are also considered, showing that $A^{-1}$ is in addit…
Utilizing the stability characterizations of generalized inverses of linear operator, we investigate the existence of generalized resolvents of linear pencils in Banach spaces. Some practical criterions for the existence of generalized resolvents of the linear pencil $λ\rightarrow T-λS$ are provided and an explicit expression of the generalized resolvent is given. As applications, the characterization for the Moore-Penrose inverse of the linear pencil to be its generalized resolvent and the existence of the generalized resolvents of linear pencils of finite rank operators, Fredholm operators a…
Let $A$ be a densely defined closed operator in a complex Banach space $X.$ Conditions for left invertibility of operators of the form $\sum_{j=1}^\infty a_j (α_j -A)^{-1}$ are given. Several examples are considered.
This exposition paper is devoted to the theory of Abram Vilgelmovich Shtraus and his disciples and followers. This theory studies the so-called generalized resolvents of symmetric and isometric operators in a Hilbert space and provides alternative formulas to the well-known Krein-type formulas. We think that it would be convenient to have an exposition of the corresponding theory with full proofs and necessary corrections.
An inner closed (without boundary) smooth manifold of a lower dimension is cut from a multidimensional ball. In this region, invertible restrictions of the Laplace operator are well defined. In particular, the well-posed non-smooth Bitsadze-Samarskiĭ problem for the Laplace equation is defined. Moreover, we obtain M.G. Krein's formula for the trace of the difference of resolvents of the studied operators. We prove assertions on the spectrum of the non-smooth Bitsadze-Samarskiĭ problem.
A model problem of the form -iεy''+q(x)y=λy, y(-1)=y(1)=0, is associated with well-known in hydrodynamics Orr--Sommerfeld operator. Here (λ) is the spectral parameter, (ε) is the small parameter which is proportional to the viscocity of the liquid and to the reciprocal of the Reynolds number, and (q(x)) is the velocity of the stationary flow of the liquid in the channel (|x|\leqslant 1). We study the behaviour of the spectrum of the corresponding model operator as (ε\to 0) with monotonous analytic functions. We assert that the sets of the accumulation points of the spectra (the limit spectral …
The S-functional calculus is a functional calculus for $(n+1)$-tuples of non necessarily commuting operators that can be considered a higher dimensional version of the classical Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for a single operator. In this last calculus, the resolvent equation plays an important role in the proof of several results. Associated with the S-functional calculus there are two resolvent operators: the left $S_L^{-1}(s,T)$ and the right one $S_R^{-1}(s,T)$, where $s=(s_0,s_1,\ldots,s_n)\in \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and $T=(T_0,T_1,\ldots,T_n)$ is an $(n+1)$-tuple of non commuting operator…
The main objects of our considerations are differential operators generated by a formally selfadjoint differential expression of an even order on the interval $[0,b> (b\leq \infty)$ with operator valued coefficients. We complement and develop the known Shtraus' results on generalized resolvents and characteristic matrices of the minimal operator $L_0$. Our approach is based on the concept of a decomposing boundary triplet which enables to establish a connection between the Straus' method and boundary value problems (for singular differential operators) with a spectral parameter in a boundary c…
We give some new criteria for a Hilbert space operator with spectrum on a smooth curve to be similar to a normal operator, in terms of pointwise and integral estimates of the resolvent. These results generalize criteria of Stampfli, Van Casteren and Naboko, and answer several questions posed by Stampfli. The main tools are from our recent results on dilation to the boundary of the spectrum, along with the Dynkin functional calculus for smooth functions, which is based on pseudoanalytic continuation.
In the paper under review, we construct complex powers of multivalued linear operators with polynomially bounded $C$-resolvent existing on an appropriate region of the complex plane containing the interval $(-\infty,0].$ In our approach, the operator $C$ is not necessarily injective. We clarify the basic properties of introduced powers and analyze the abstract incomplete fractional differential inclusions associated with the use of modified Liuoville right-sided derivatives. We also consider abstract incomplete differential inclusions of second order, working in the general setting of sequenti…
The $S$-functional calculus is based on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and it defines functions of $n$-tuples of not necessarily commuting operators or of quaternionic operators. This calculus relays on the notion of $S$-spectrum and of $S$-resolvent operator. Since most of the properties that hold for the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus extend to the S-functional calculus it can be considered its non commutative version. In this paper we show that the Taylor formula of the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus can be generalized to the S-functional calculus, the proof is not a t…
For $a,α>0$ let $E(a,α)$ be the set of all compact operators $A$ on a separable Hilbert space such that $s_n(A)=O(\exp(-an^α))$, where $s_n(A)$ denotes the $n$-th singular number of $A$. We provide upper bounds for the norm of the resolvent $(zI-A)^{-1}$ of $A$ in terms of a quantity describing the departure from normality of $A$ and the distance of $z$ to the spectrum of $A$. As a consequence we obtain upper bounds for the Hausdorff distance of the spectra of two operators in $E(a,α)$.
We study growth rates for strongly continuous semigroups. We prove that a growth rate for the resolvent on imaginary lines implies a corresponding growth rate for the semigroup if either the underlying space is a Hilbert space, or the semigroup is asymptotically analytic, or if the semigroup is positive and the underlying space is an $L^{p}$-space or a space of continuous functions. We also prove variations of the main results on fractional domains; these are valid on more general Banach spaces. In the second part of the article we apply our main theorem to prove optimality in a classical exam…
In this paper, we give a correct definition of the Laplace operator with delta-like potentials. Correctly solvable pointwise perturbation is investigated and formulas of resolvent are described. We study some properties of the resolvent. In particular, we obtain Krein formula for these resolvents.
Contractive selfadjoint extensions of a Hermitian contraction $B$ in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ with an exit in some larger Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}\oplus{\mathcal H}$ are investigated. This leads to a new geometric approach for characterizing analytic properties of holomorphic operator-valued functions of Kreĭn-Ovcharenko type, a class of functions whose study has been recently initiated by the authors. Compressed resolvents of such exit space extensions are also investigated leading to some new connections to transfer functions of passive discrete-time systems and related classes of…
We prove that a general version of the quantified Ingham-Karamata theorem for $C_0$-semigroups is sharp under mild conditions on the resolvent growth, thus generalising the results contained in a recent paper by the same authors. It follows in particular that the well-known Batty-Duyckaerts theorem is optimal even for bounded $C_0$-semigroups whose generator has subpolynomial resolvent growth. Our proof is based on an elegant application of the open mapping theorem, which we complement by a crucial technical lemma allowing us to strengthen our earlier results.
This paper deals with generators $\mathsf{A}$ of strongly continuous right linear semigroups in Banach two-sided spaces whose set of scalars is an arbitrary Clifford algebra $\mathit{C}\ell(0,n)$. We study the invertibility of operators of the form $P(\mathsf{A})$, where $P(x)\in\mathbb{R}[x]$ is any real polynomial, and we give an integral representation for $P(\mathsf{A})^{-1}$ by means of a Laplace-type transform of the semigroup $\mathsf{T}(t)$ generated by $\mathsf{A}$. In particular, we deduce a new integral representation for the operator $(\mathsf{A}^2 - 2\mathrm{Re}(q) \,\mathsf{A} + …
A notion of resolvent set for an operator acting in a rigged Hilbert space $\D \subset \H\subset \D^\times$ is proposed. This set depends on a family of intermediate locally convex spaces living between $\D$ and $\D^\times$, called interspaces. Some properties of the resolvent set and of the corresponding multivalued resolvent function are derived and some examples are discussed.
We present conditions for a family $\left(A\left(x\right)\right)_{x\in\mathbb{R}^{d}}$ of self-adjoint operators in $H^{r}=\mathbb{C}^{r}\otimes H$ for a separable complex Hilbert space $H$, such that the Callias operator $D=ic\nabla+A\left(X\right)$ satisfies that $\left(D^{\ast}D+1\right)^{-N}-\left(DD^{\ast}+1\right)^{-N}$ is trace class in $L^2\left(\mathbb{R}^{d},H^{r}\right)$. Here, $c\nabla$ is the Dirac operator associated to a Clifford multiplication $c$ of rank $r$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, and $A\left(X\right)$ is fibre-wise multiplication with $A\left(x\right)$ in $L^2\left(\mathbb{R}^{…
For pairs of holomorphic maps $(u,ψ)$ on the complex plane, we study some dynamical properties of the weighted composition operator $W_{(u,ψ)}$ on the Fock spaces. We prove that no weighted composition operator on the Fock spaces is supercyclic. Conditions under which the operators satisfy the Ritt's resolvent growth condition are also identified. In particular, we show that a non-trivial composition operator on the Fock spaces satisfies such a growth condition if and only if it is compact.
Maximally monotone operators are fundamental objects in modern optimization. The main classes of monotone operators are subdifferential operators and matrices with a positive semidefinite symmetric part. In this paper, we study a nice class of monotone operators: displacement mappings of isometries of finite order. We derive explicit formulas for resolvents, Yosida approximations, and (set-valued and MoorePenrose) inverses. We illustrate our results by considering certain rational rotators and circular shift operators.
We consider the resolvent $(λ-a)^{-1}$ of any $R$-diagonal operator $a$ in a $\mathrm{II}_1$-factor. Our main theorem gives a universal asymptotic formula for the norm of such a resolvent. En route to its proof, we calculate the $R$-transform of the operator $|λ-c|^2$ where $c$ is Voiculescu's circular operator, and give an asymptotic formula for the negative moments of $|λ-a|^2$ for any $R$-diagonal $a$. We use a mixture of complex analytic and combinatorial techniques, each giving finer information where the other can give only coarse detail. In particular, we introduce {\em partition struct…
For the relations generated by pair of differential operator expressions one of which depends on the spectral parameter in the Nevanlinna manner we construct analogs of the generalized resolvents which are integro-differential operators. The expansions in eigenfunctions of these relations are obtained.
In this paper we introduce Laguerre expansions to approximate vector-valued functions expanding on the well-known scalar theorem. We apply this result to approximate $C_0$-semi\-groups and resolvent operators in abstract Banach spaces. We study certain Laguerre functions, its Laplace transforms and the convergence of Laguerre series in Lebesgue spaces. The concluding section of this paper is devote to consider some examples of $C_0$-semigroups: shift, convolution and holomorphic semigroups where some of these results are improved.
By using commutator methods, we show uniform resolvent estimates and obtain globally smooth operators for self-adjoint injective homogeneous operators $H$ on graded groups, including Rockland operators, sublaplacians and many others. Left or right invariance is not required. Typically the globally smooth operator has the form $T=V|H|^{1/2}$, where $V$ only depends on the homogeneous structure of the group through Sobolev spaces, the homogeneous dimension and the minimal and maximal dilation weights. For stratified groups improvements are obtained, by using a Hardy-type inequality. Some of the …
Within convex analysis, a rich theory with various applications has been evolving since the proximal average of convex functions was first introduced over a decade ago. When one considers the subdifferential of the proximal average, a natural averaging operation of the subdifferentials of the averaged functions emerges. In the present paper we extend the reach of this averaging operation to the framework of monotone operator theory in Hilbert spaces, transforming it into the resolvent average. The theory of resolvent averages contains many desirable properties. In particular, we study a detail…
For the relations generated by pair of differential operator expressions one of which depends on the spectral parameter in the Nevanlinna manner we construct analogs of the generalized resolvents which are integro-differential operators.
In this paper we consider the Sturm-Liuoville operator in the Hilbert space $L_2$ with the singular complex potential of $W^{-1}_2$ and two-point boundary conditions. For this operator we give sufficient conditions for norm resolvent approximation by the operators of the same class.
A Nevanlinna function is a function which is analytic in the open upper half plane and has a non-negative imaginary part there. In this paper we study a fractional linear transformation for a Nevanlinna function $n$ with a suitable asymptotic expansion at $\infty$, that is an analogue of the Schur transformation for contractive analytic functions in the unit disc. Applying the transformation $p$ times we find a Nevanlinna function $n_p$ which is a fractional linear transformation of the given function $n$. The main results concern the effect of this transformation to the realizations of $n$ an…
In this note self-adjoint realizations of second order elliptic differential expressions with non-local Robin boundary conditions on a domain $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with smooth compact boundary are studied. A Schatten--von Neumann type estimate for the singular values of the difference of the $m$th powers of the resolvents of two Robin realizations is obtained, and for $m>\tfrac{n}{2}-1$ it is shown that the resolvent power difference is a trace class operator. The estimates are slightly stronger than the classical singular value estimates by M. Sh. Birman where one of the Robin realizations is repla…
The paper deals with jump generators with a convolution kernel. Assuming that the kernel decays either exponentially or polynomially we prove a number of lower and upper bounds for the resolvent of such operators. We consider two applications of these results. First we obtain pointwise estimates for principal eigenfunction of jump generators perturbed by a compactly supported potential (so-called nonlocal Schrödinger operators). Then we consider the Cauchy problem for the corresponding inhomogeneous evolution equations and study the behaviour of its solutions.
This paper is a continuation of the investigation of resolvents of elliptic operators on conic manifolds from math.AP/0410178 and math.AP/0410176 to the case of manifolds with boundary and realizations of operators under boundary conditions. We prove the existence of sectors of minimal growth for realizations of boundary value problems for cone operators under natural ellipticity conditions on the symbols. Special attention is devoted to the clarification of the analytic structure of the resolvent.
We prove norm estimates for the difference of resolvents of operators and their discrete counterparts, embedded into the continuum using biorthogonal Riesz sequences. The estimates are given in the operator norm for operators on square integrable functions, and depend explicitly on the mesh size for the discrete operators. The operators are a sum of a Fourier multiplier and a multiplicative potential. The Fourier multipliers include the fractional Laplacian and the pseudo-relativistic free Hamiltonian. The potentials are real, bounded, and Hölder continuous. As a side-product, the Hausdorff di…
Consider the Schroedinger operator with semiclassical parameter h, in the limit where h goes to zero. When the involved long-range potential is smooth, it is well known that the boundary values of the operator's resolvent at a positive energy E are bounded by O(1/h) if and only if the associated Hamilton flow is non-trapping at energy E. In the present paper, we extend this result to the case where the potential may possess Coulomb singularities. Since the Hamilton flow then is not complete in general, our analysis requires the use of an appropriate regularization.
We consider the resolvent of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents unusual powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity. The consequences for the pole structure of the $ζ$-function, and the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel, are also discussed.
