The main objects of our considerations are differential operators generated by a formally selfadjoint differential expression of an even order on the interval $[0,b> (b\leq \infty)$ with operator valued coefficients. We complement and develop the known Shtraus' results on generalized resolvents and characteristic matrices of the minimal operator $L_0$. Our approach is based on the concept of a decomposing boundary triplet which enables to establish a connection between the Straus' method and boundary value problems (for singular differential operators) with a spectral parameter in a boundary condition. In particular we provide a parametrization of all characteristic matrices $\Om (ł)$ of the operator $L_0$ immediately in terms of the Nevanlinna boundary parameter $τ(ł)$. Such a parametrization is given in the form of the block-matrix representation of $\Om (ł)$ as well as by means of the formula for $\Om (ł)$ similar to the well known Krein-Naimark formula for generalized resolvents. In passing we obtain the representation of canonical and generalized resolvents in the form of integral operators with the operator kernel (the Green function) defined in terms of fundamental operator solutions of the equation $l[y]-ły=0$.
We discuss analogs of the Kreiss resolvent condition for power bounded matrices. We also explain how to extend it to analogs of the Hille-Yosida condition.
We define a new average - termed the resolvent average - for positive semidefinite matrices. For positive definite matrices, the resolvent average enjoys self-duality and it interpolates between the harmonic and the arithmetic averages, which it approaches when taking appropriate limits. We compare the resolvent average to the geometric mean. Some applications to matrix functions are also given.
We study general (not necessarily Hamiltonian) first-order symmetric system $J y'-B(t)y=\D(t) f(t)$ on an interval $\cI=[a,b) $ with the regular endpoint $a$ and singular endpoint $b$. It is assumed that the deficiency indices $n_\pm(\Tmi)$ of the corresponding minimal relation $\Tmi$ in $\LI$ satisfy $n_-(\Tmi)\leq n_+(\Tmi)$. We describe all generalized resolvents $y=R(ł)f, \; f\in\LI,$ of $\Tmi$ in terms of boundary problems with $ł$-depending boundary conditions imposed on regular and singular boundary values of a function $y$ at the endpoints $a$ and $b$ respectively. We also parametrize …
We consider the explicit relation between two resolvent matrices related to the truncated Hausdorff matrix moment problem (THMM) in the case of an even and odd number of moments. This relation is described with the help of four families of orthogonal matrix polynomials on the finite interval $[a,b]$ and their associated second kind polynomials.
A Nevanlinna function is a function which is analytic in the open upper half plane and has a non-negative imaginary part there. In this paper we study a fractional linear transformation for a Nevanlinna function $n$ with a suitable asymptotic expansion at $\infty$, that is an analogue of the Schur transformation for contractive analytic functions in the unit disc. Applying the transformation $p$ times we find a Nevanlinna function $n_p$ which is a fractional linear transformation of the given function $n$. The main results concern the effect of this transformation to the realizations of $n$ an…
In the paper under review, we construct complex powers of multivalued linear operators with polynomially bounded $C$-resolvent existing on an appropriate region of the complex plane containing the interval $(-\infty,0].$ In our approach, the operator $C$ is not necessarily injective. We clarify the basic properties of introduced powers and analyze the abstract incomplete fractional differential inclusions associated with the use of modified Liuoville right-sided derivatives. We also consider abstract incomplete differential inclusions of second order, working in the general setting of sequenti…
For the relations generated by pair of differential operator expressions one of which depends on the spectral parameter in the Nevanlinna manner we construct analogs of the generalized resolvents which are integro-differential operators. The expansions in eigenfunctions of these relations are obtained.

Under certain mild assumption, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between solutions of the Nehari-Takagi problem and solutions of some Takagi-Sarason interpolation problem. The resolvent matrix of the Nehari-Takagi problem is shown to belong to the class of so-called generalized $γ$-generating matrices, which is introduced and studied in the paper.
We consider the resolvent of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents unusual powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity. The consequences for the pole structure of the $ζ$-function, and the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel, are also discussed.
We investigate the relation between the spectrum of a non-normal matrix and the norm of its resolvent. We provide spectral estimates for the resolvent of matrices whose largest singular value is bounded by $1$ (so-called Hilbert space contractions) and for power-bounded matrices. In the first case our estimate is optimal and we present explicit matrices that achieve equality in the bound. This result recovers and generalizes previous estimates obtained by E.B. Davies and B. Simon in the study of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. In case of power-bounded matrices we achieve the stronge…
We propose a regularization of the formal differential expression of order $m \geqslant 3$ $$ l(y) = i^my^{(m)}(t) + q(t)y(t), \,t \in (a, b), $$ applying quasi-derivatives. The distribution coefficient $q$ is supposed to have an antiderivative $Q \in L([a,b];\mathbb{C})$. For the symmetric case ($Q = \bar{Q}$) self-adjoint and maximal dissipative extensions of the minimal operator and its generalized resolvents are described. The resolvent approximation with resrect to the norm of the considered operators is also investigated. The case $m = 2$ for $Q \in L_2([a, b];\mathbb{C})$ was investigat…
Maximally monotone operators are fundamental objects in modern optimization. The main classes of monotone operators are subdifferential operators and matrices with a positive semidefinite symmetric part. In this paper, we study a nice class of monotone operators: displacement mappings of isometries of finite order. We derive explicit formulas for resolvents, Yosida approximations, and (set-valued and MoorePenrose) inverses. We illustrate our results by considering certain rational rotators and circular shift operators.
A Banach space operator $T\in B({\cal X})$ is polaroid if points $λ\in\isoσσ(T)$ are poles of the resolvent of $T$. Let $σ_a(T)$, $σ_w(T)$, $σ_{aw}(T)$, $σ_{SF_+}(T)$ and $σ_{SF_-}(T)$ denote, respectively, the approximate point, the Weyl, the Weyl essential approximate, the upper semi--Fredholm and lower semi--Fredholm spectrum of $T$. For $A$, $B$ and $C\in B({\cal X})$, let $M_C$ denote the operator matrix $(A & C 0 & B)$. If $A$ is polaroid on $π_0(M_C)=\{λ\in\isoσ(M_C) 0<\dim(M_C-λ)^{-1}(0)<\infty\}$, $M_0$ satisfies Weyl's theorem, and $A$ and $B$ satisfy either of the hypotheses (i) $A$…
We introduce the concepts of the Fourier transform and convolution generated by an arbitrary restriction of the differentiation operator in the space $L_{2}(0,b).$ In contrast to the classical convolution, the introduced convolution explicitly depends on the boundary condition that defines the domain of the operator $L.$ The convolution is closely connected to the inverse operator or to the resolvent. So, we first find a representation for the resolvent, and then introduce the required convolution.
For the self-adjoint operator of the $p$th derivative, a system of fundamental solutions is constructed. This system is analogues to the classical system of sines and cosines. The properties of such functions are studied. Classes of self-adjoint boundary conditions are described. For the operator of the third derivative, the resolvent is calculated and an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions is given.
We study basic spectral properties of J-self-adjoint $2\times 2$ block operator matrices. Using the linear resolvent growth condition, we obtain simple necessary conditions for the regularity of the critical point $\infty$. In particular, we present simple examples of operators having the singular critical point $\infty$. Also, we apply our results to the linearized operator arising in the study of soliton type solutions to the nonlinear relativistic Ginzburg-Landau equation.
In this note self-adjoint realizations of second order elliptic differential expressions with non-local Robin boundary conditions on a domain $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with smooth compact boundary are studied. A Schatten--von Neumann type estimate for the singular values of the difference of the $m$th powers of the resolvents of two Robin realizations is obtained, and for $m>\tfrac{n}{2}-1$ it is shown that the resolvent power difference is a trace class operator. The estimates are slightly stronger than the classical singular value estimates by M. Sh. Birman where one of the Robin realizations is repla…
We consider the resolvent of a system of first order differential operators with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity, and can take even irrational values. The consequences for the pole structure of the corresponding $ζ$ and $η$-functions are also discussed.
Pseudo-differential operator equations with parameter are studied. Uniform separability properties and resolvent estimates are obtained in terms of fractional derivatives. Moreover, maximal regularity properties of the pseudo-differential abstract parabolic equation are established. Particularly, it is proven that the operators generated by these pseudo-differential equations are positive and aso are generators of analytic semigroups. As an application, the anisotropic parameter dependent pseudo-differential equations and the system of pseudo-differential equations are studied
In the present paper, we consider the integral operator, which acts in Hilbert space and has sine kernel. This operator generates two operator identities and two corresponding canonical differential systems. We find the asymptotics of the corresponding resolvent and Hamiltonians. We use both the method of operator identities and the theory of random matrices.
Finiteness of the point spectrum of linear operators acting in a Banach space is investigated from point of view of perturbation theory. In the first part of the paper we present an abstract result based on analytical continuation of the resolvent function through continuous spectrum. In the second part, the abstract result is applied to differential operators which can be represented as a differential operator with periodic coefficients perturbed by an arbitrary subordinated differential operator.
In this paper, we study the separability and spectral properties of singular degenerate elliptic equations in vector valued spaces. We prove that a realization operator by this equation with some boundary conditions is separable and Fredholm in Lebesque spaces. The leading part of the associated differential operator is not self-adjoint. The sharpe estimate of the resolvent, discreetness of spectrum and completeness of root elements of this operator is obtained
In this paper, we introduce a parametric pseudodifferential calculus on noncommutative $n$-tori which is a natural nest for resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. Unlike in some previous approaches to parametric pseudodifferential calculi, our parametric pseudodifferential calculus contains resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators that need not be differential operators. As an application we show that complex powers of positive elliptic pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative $n$-tori are pseudodifferential operators. This confirms a claim of Fathi-Ghorbanpour-K…
In this article we present a novel method for studying the asymptotic behaviour, with order-sharp error estimates, of the resolvents of parameter-dependent operator families. The method is applied to the study of differential equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients in the context of second-order PDE systems and the Maxwell system. This produces a non-standard homogenisation result that is characterised by `fibre-wise' homogenisation of the related Floquet-Bloch PDEs. These fibre-homogenised resolvents are shown to be asymptotically equivalent to a whole class of operator families, incl…
Properties of the mappings \begin{align*} C&\mapsto\frac1{(2πi)^2}\int_{Γ_1}\int_{Γ_2}f(λ,μ)\,R_{1,\,λ}\,C\, R_{2,\,μ}\,dμ\,dλ, C&\mapsto\frac1{2πi}\int_Γg(λ)R_{1,\,λ}\,C\, R_{2,\,λ}\,dλ\end{align*} are discussed; here $R_{1,\,(\cdot)}$ and $R_{2,\,(\cdot)}$ are pseudo-resolvents, i.~e., resolvents of bounded, unbounded, or multivalued linear operators, and $f$ and $g$ are analytic functions. Several applications are considered: a representation of the impulse response of a second order linear differential equation with operator coefficients, a representation of the solution of the Sylvester e…
The classical concept of $Q$-functions associated to symmetric and selfadjoint operators due to M.G. Krein and H. Langer is extended in such a way that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in the theory of elliptic differential equations can be interpreted as a generalized $Q$-function. For couplings of uniformly elliptic second order differential expression on bounded and unbounded domains explicit Krein type formulas for the difference of the resolvents and trace formulas in an $H^2$-framework are obtained.
We consider semi-infinite Jacobi matrices corresponding to a point interaction for the discrete Schrödinger operator. Our goal is to find explicit expressions for the spectral measure, the resolvent and other spectral characteristics of such Jacobi matrices. It turns out that their spectral analysis leads to a new class of orthogonal polynomials generalizing the classical Chebyshev polynomials.
