Monotone operators, especially in the form of subdifferential operators, are of basic importance in optimization. It is well known since Minty, Rockafellar, and Bertsekas-Eckstein that in Hilbert space, monotone operators can be understood and analyzed from the alternative viewpoint of firmly nonexpansive mappings, which were found to be precisely the resolvents of monotone operators. For example, the proximal mappings in the sense of Moreau are precisely the resolvents of subdifferential operators. More general notions of "resolvent", "proximal mapping" and "firmly nonexpansive" have been studied. One important class, popularized chiefly by Alber and by Kohsaka and Takahashi, is based on the normalized duality mapping. Furthermore, Censor and Lent pioneered the use of the gradient of a well behaved convex functions in a Bregman-distance based framework. It is known that resolvents are firmly nonexpansive, but the converse has been an open problem for the latter framework.
In this note, we build on the very recent characterization of maximal monotonicity due to Martinez-Legaz to provide a framework for studying resolvents in which firmly nonexpansive mappings are always resolvents. This framework includes classical resolvents, resolvents based on the normalized duality mapping, resolvents based on Bregman distances, and even resolvents based on (nonsymmetric) rotators. As a by-product of recent work on the proximal average, we obtain a constructive Kirszbraun-Valentine extension result for generalized firmly nonexpansive mappings. Several examples illustrate our results.
Within convex analysis, a rich theory with various applications has been evolving since the proximal average of convex functions was first introduced over a decade ago. When one considers the subdifferential of the proximal average, a natural averaging operation of the subdifferentials of the averaged functions emerges. In the present paper we extend the reach of this averaging operation to the framework of monotone operator theory in Hilbert spaces, transforming it into the resolvent average. The theory of resolvent averages contains many desirable properties. In particular, we study a detail…
Maximally monotone operators are fundamental objects in modern optimization. The main classes of monotone operators are subdifferential operators and matrices with a positive semidefinite symmetric part. In this paper, we study a nice class of monotone operators: displacement mappings of isometries of finite order. We derive explicit formulas for resolvents, Yosida approximations, and (set-valued and MoorePenrose) inverses. We illustrate our results by considering certain rational rotators and circular shift operators.
In this paper, the split common null point problem in two Banach spaces is considered. Then, using the generalized resolvents of maximal monotone operators and the generalized projections and an infinite family of nonexpansive mappings, a strong convergence theorem for finding a solution of the split common null point problem in two Banach spaces in the presence of a sequence of errors will be proved.
In this paper we study invertible extensions of a symmetric operator in a Hilbert space $H$. All such extensions are characterized by a parameter in the generalized Neumann's formulas. Generalized resolvents, which are generated by the invertible extensions, are extracted by a boundary condition among all generalized resolvents in the Shtraus formula.
We present a counterexample showing that the graphical limit of maximally monotone operators might not be maximally monotone. We also characterize the directional differentiability of the resolvent of an operator $B$ in terms of existence and maximal monotonicity of the proto-derivative of $B$.
Contractive selfadjoint extensions of a Hermitian contraction $B$ in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ with an exit in some larger Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}\oplus{\mathcal H}$ are investigated. This leads to a new geometric approach for characterizing analytic properties of holomorphic operator-valued functions of Kreĭn-Ovcharenko type, a class of functions whose study has been recently initiated by the authors. Compressed resolvents of such exit space extensions are also investigated leading to some new connections to transfer functions of passive discrete-time systems and related classes of…
We study nearly equal and nearly convex sets, ranges of maximally monotone operators, and ranges and fixed points of convex combinations of firmly nonexpansive mappings. The main result states that the range of an average of firmly nonexpansive mappings is nearly equal to the average of the ranges of the mappings. A striking application of this result yields that the average of asymptotically regular firmly nonexpansive mappings is also asymptotically regular. Throughout, examples are provided to illustrate the theory. We also obtain detailed information on the domain and range of the resolven…
Monotone linear relations play important roles in variational inequality problems and quadratic optimizations. In this paper, we give explicit maximally monotone linear subspace extensions of a monotone linear relation in finite dimensional spaces. Examples are provided to illustrate our extensions. Our results generalize a recent result by Crouzeix and Anaya.
We define a family of linear type (D) operators for which the inverse of their maximal monotone extensions to the bidual are not of type (D) and provide an example of an operator in this family.
We prove a variant of Krein's resolvent formula expressing the resolvents of self-adjoint extensions through the associated boundary conditions. Applications to solvable quantum-mechanical problems are discussed.
In this paper, we discuss about monotone vector fields, which is a typical extension to the theory of convex functions, by exploiting the tangent space structure. This new approach to monotonicity in CAT(0) spaces stands in opposed to the monotonicity defined earlier in CAT(0) spaces by Khatibzadeh and Ranjbar [14] and Chaipunya and Kumam [8]. In particular, this new concept extends the theory from both Hilbert spaces and Hadamard manifolds, while the known concept barely has any obvious relationship to the theory in Hadamard manifolds. We also study the corresponding resolvents and Yosida app…
The correspondence between the class of nonexpansive mappings and the class of maximally monotone operators via the reflected resolvents of the latter has played an instrumental role in the convergence analysis of the splitting methods. Indeed, the performance of some of these methods, e.g., Douglas-Rachford and Peaceman-Rachford methods hinges on iterating the so-called splitting operator associated with the individual operators. This splitting operator is a function of the composition of the reflected resolvents of the underlying operators. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of …
We show that the set of fixed points of the average of two resolvents can be found from the set of fixed points for compositions of two resolvents associated with scaled monotone operators. Recently, the proximal average has attracted considerable attention in convex analysis. Our results imply that the minimizers of proximal-average functions can be found from the set of fixed points for compositions of two proximal mappings associated with scaled convex functions. When both convex functions in the proximal average are indicator functions of convex sets, least squares solutions can be complet…
We study the existence and approximation of fixed points of metrically nonspreading mappings and firmly metrically nonspreading mappings in Hadamard spaces. The resolvents of monotone operators satisfying range conditions are typical examples of firmly metrically nonspreading mappings. Applications to monotone operators in such spaces are also included.
Utilizing our recent proximal-average based results on the constructive extension of monotone operators, we provide a novel approach to the celebrated Kirszbraun-Valentine Theorem and to the extension of firmly nonexpansive mappings.
For a strongly elliptic second-order operator $A$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ it has been known for many years how to interpret the general closed $L_2(Ω)$-realizations of $A$ as representing boundary conditions (generally nonlocal), when the domain and coefficients are smooth. The purpose of the present paper is to extend this representation to nonsmooth domains and coefficients, including the case of Hölder $C^{\frac32+\varepsilon}$-smoothness, in such a way that pseudodifferential methods are still available for resolvent constructions and ellipticity considerations. We show…
In this paper we provide some extension results for n-cyclically monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces by making use of the Fenchel duality. In this way we give a positive answer to a question posed by Bauschke and Wang in [4].
The $S$-functional calculus is based on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and it defines functions of $n$-tuples of not necessarily commuting operators or of quaternionic operators. This calculus relays on the notion of $S$-spectrum and of $S$-resolvent operator. Since most of the properties that hold for the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus extend to the S-functional calculus it can be considered its non commutative version. In this paper we show that the Taylor formula of the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus can be generalized to the S-functional calculus, the proof is not a t…
For an increasing sequence $(T_n)$ of one-parameter semigroups of sub Markovian kernel operators over a Polish space, we study the limit semigroup and prove sufficient conditions for it to be strongly Feller. In particular, we show that the strong Feller property carries over from the approximating semigroups to the limit semigroup if the resolvent of the latter maps the constant 1 function to a continuous function. This is instrumental in the study of elliptic operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with unbounded coefficients: our abstract result enables us to assign a semigroup to such an operator and …
We present a new sufficient condition under which a maximal monotone operator $T:X\tos X^*$ admits a unique maximal monotone extension to the bidual $\widetilde T:X^{**} \rightrightarrows X^*$. For non-linear operators this condition is equivalent to uniqueness of the extension. The class of maximal monotone operators which satisfy this new condition includes class of Gossez type D maximal monotone operators, previously defined and studied by J.-P. Gossez, and all maximal monotone operators of this new class satisfies a restricted version of Brondsted-Rockafellar condition. The central tool in…
Given a linear semi-bounded symmetric operator $S\ge -ω$, we explicitly define, and provide their nonlinear resolvents, nonlinear maximal monotone operators $A_Θ$ of type $λ>ω$ (i.e. generators of one-parameter continuous nonlinear semi-groups of contractions of type $λ$) which coincide with the Friedrichs extension of $S$ on a convex set containing ${\mathscr D}(S)$. The extension parameter $Θ\subset{\mathfrak h}\times{\mathfrak h}$ ranges over the set of nonlinear maximal monotone relations on an auxiliary Hilbert space $\mathfrak h$ isomorphic to the deficiency subspace of $S$. Moreover $A_…
Given a monotone convex function on the space of essentially bounded random variables with the Lebesgue property (order continuity), we consider its extension preserving the Lebesgue property to as big solid vector space of random variables as possible. We show that there exists a maximum such extension, with explicit construction, where the maximum domain of extension is obtained as a (possibly proper) subspace of a natural Orlicz-type space, characterized by a certain uniform integrability property. As an application, we provide a characterization of the Lebesgue property of monotone convex …
We study n-monotone functionals, which constitute a generalisation of n-monotone set functions. We investigate their relation to the concepts of exactness and natural extension, which generalise the notions of coherence and natural extension in the behavioural theory of imprecise probabilities. We improve upon a number of results in the literature, and prove among other things a representation result for exact n-monotone functionals in terms of Choquet integrals.
We consider the resolvent of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents unusual powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity. The consequences for the pole structure of the $ζ$-function, and the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel, are also discussed.
In this paper, we deal with three aspects of $p$-monotone operators. First we study $p$-monotone operators with a unique maximal extension (called pre-maximal), and with convex graph. We then deal with linear operators, and provide characterizations of $p$-monotonicity and maximal $p$-monotonicity. Finally we show that the Brezis-Browder theorem preserves $p$-monotonicity in reflexive Banach spaces.
The new notion of operator/matrix $k$-tone functions is introduced, which is a higher order extension of operator/matrix monotone and convex functions. Differential properties of matrix $k$-tone functions are shown. Characterizations, properties, and examples of operator $k$-tone functions are presented. In particular, integral representations of operator $k$-tone functions are given, generalizing familiar representations of operator monotone and convex functions.
We give, for general Banach spaces, a characterization of the sequential lower limit of maximal monotone operators of type (D) and prove its representability. As a consequence, using a recent extension of the Moreau-Yosida regularization for type (D) operators, we extend to general Banach spaces the definitions of the variational sum of monotone operators and the variational composition of monotone operators with continuous linear mappings, and we prove that both operators are representable.
We provide a simple recipe for obtaining all self-adjoint extensions, together with their resolvent, of the symmetric operator $S$ obtained by restricting the self-adjoint operator $A:\D(A)\subseteq\H\to\H$ to the dense, closed with respect to the graph norm, subspace $\N\subset \D(A)$. Neither the knowledge of $S^*$ nor of the deficiency spaces of $S$ is required. Typically $A$ is a differential operator and $\N$ is the kernel of some trace (restriction) operator along a null subset. We parametrise the extensions by the bundle $π:\E(\fh)\to¶(\fh)$, where $¶(\fh)$ denotes the set of orthogonal…
