Contractive selfadjoint extensions of a Hermitian contraction $B$ in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ with an exit in some larger Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}\oplus{\mathcal H}$ are investigated. This leads to a new geometric approach for characterizing analytic properties of holomorphic operator-valued functions of Kreĭn-Ovcharenko type, a class of functions whose study has been recently initiated by the authors. Compressed resolvents of such exit space extensions are also investigated leading to some new connections to transfer functions of passive discrete-time systems and related classes of holomorphic operator-valued functions.
In this paper we discuss the relationship between the numerical range of an extensive class of unbounded operator functions and the joint numerical range of the operator coefficients. Furthermore, we derive methods on how to find estimates of the joint numerical range. Those estimates are used to obtain explicitly computable enclosures of the numerical range of the operator function and resolvent estimates. The enclosure and upper estimate of the norm of the resolvent are optimal given the estimate of the joint numerical range.
In this paper we explore a certain class of non-selfadjoint operators acting in a complex separable Hilbert space. We consider a perturbation of a non-selfadjoint operator by an operator that is also non-selfadjoint. Our consideration is based on known spectral properties of the real component of a non-selfadjoint compact operator. Using a technic of the sesquilinear form theory we establish the compactness property of the resolvent, obtain the asymptotic equivalence between the real component of the resolvent and the resolvent of the real component for some class of non-selfadjoint operators.…
The famous results of M.G. Kre\uın concerning the description of selfadjoint contractive extensions of a Hermitian contraction $T_1$ and the characterization of all nonnegative selfadjoint extensions $\widetilde A$ of a nonnegative operator $A$ via the inequalities $A_K\leq \widetilde A \leq A_F$, where $A_K$ and $A_F$ are the Kre\uın-von Neumann extension and the Friedrichs extension of $A$, are generalized to the situation, where $\widetilde A$ is allowed to have a fixed number of negative eigenvalues. These generalizations are shown to be possible under a certain minimality condition on the…
In this paper we introduce an enclosure of the numerical range of a class of rational operator functions. In contrast to the numerical range the presented enclosure can be computed exactly in the infinite dimensional case as well as in the finite dimensional case. Moreover, the new enclosure is minimal given only the numerical ranges of the operator coefficients and many characteristics of the numerical range can be obtained by investigating the enclosure. We introduce a pseudonumerical range and study an enclosure of this set. This enclosure provides a computable upper bound of the norm of th…
In this paper we study a class $\mathcal R\mathcal S(\mathfrak M)$ of operator functions that are holomorphic in the domain $\mathbb C\setminus\{(-\infty,-1]\cup [1,+\infty)\}$ and whose values are contractive operators in a Hilbert space $(\mathfrak M)$. The functions in $\mathcal R\mathcal S(\mathfrak M)$ are Schur functions in the open unit disk $\mathbb D$ and, in addition, Nevanlinna functions in $\mathbb C_+\cup\mathbb C_-$. Such functions can be realized as transfer functions of minimal passive selfadjoint discrete-time systems. We give various characterizations for the class $\mathcal …
A generalization of the well-known results of M.G. Kre\uın about the description of selfadjoint contractive extension of a hermitian contraction is obtained. This generalization concerns the situation, where the selfadjoint operator $A$ and extensions $\widetilde A$ belong to a Kre\uın space or a Pontryagin space and their defect operators are allowed to have a fixed number of negative eigenvalues. Also a result of Yu.L. Shmul'yan on completions of nonnegative block operators is generalized for block operators with a fixed number of negative eigenvalues in a Kre\uın space. This paper is a natu…
The main objects of our considerations are differential operators generated by a formally selfadjoint differential expression of an even order on the interval $[0,b> (b\leq \infty)$ with operator valued coefficients. We complement and develop the known Shtraus' results on generalized resolvents and characteristic matrices of the minimal operator $L_0$. Our approach is based on the concept of a decomposing boundary triplet which enables to establish a connection between the Straus' method and boundary value problems (for singular differential operators) with a spectral parameter in a boundary c…
A Nevanlinna function is a function which is analytic in the open upper half plane and has a non-negative imaginary part there. In this paper we study a fractional linear transformation for a Nevanlinna function $n$ with a suitable asymptotic expansion at $\infty$, that is an analogue of the Schur transformation for contractive analytic functions in the unit disc. Applying the transformation $p$ times we find a Nevanlinna function $n_p$ which is a fractional linear transformation of the given function $n$. The main results concern the effect of this transformation to the realizations of $n$ an…
In this article we develop a functional model for a general maximal dissipative operator. We construct the selfadjoint dilation of such operators. Unlike previous functional models, our model is given explicitly in terms of parameters of the original operator, making it more useful in concrete applications. For our construction we introduce an abstract framework for working with a maximal dissipative operator and its anti-dissipative adjoint and make use of the Straus characteristic function in our setting. Explicit formulae are given for the selfadjoint dilation, its resolvent, a core and the…
Singular Green operators G appear typically as boundary correction terms in resolvents for elliptic boundary value problems on a domain Ω\subset R^n, and more generally they appear in the calculus of pseudodifferential boundary problems. In particular, the boundary term in a Krein resolvent formula is a singular Green operator. It is well-known in smooth cases that when G is of negative order -t on a bounded domain, its eigenvalues or s-numbers have the behavior (*) s_j(G) \sim c j^{-t/(n-1)} for j\to \infty, governed by the boundary dimension n-1. In some nonsmooth cases, upper estimates (**)…
Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t)} parametrized by the real line. Then under certain conditions \cite{RS95} that include the assumption that the operators {D(t)= D+A(t)} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path { D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of d/dt+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L^2(R, H). In \cite{GLMST11} an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spe…
The aim of the paper is firstly to study domains of definitions in terms of boundary conditions of minimal and maximal operators, as well as selfadjoint extensions of a minimal operator associated with the fourth-order differential operator equation. Further, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for that operators to have a purely discrete or continuous spectrum, to exist extension with resolvent from $σ_p,$ study asymptotics of spectrum in case pure discrete spectrum. Finally, give the new and more general method for evaluations of regularized traces of operators with discrete spectrum…
The class of operator-valued functions which are homogeneous of degree one, holomorphic in the open right polyhalfplane, have positive semidefinite real parts there and take selfadjoint operator values at real points, and its subclass consisting of functions representable in the form of Schur complement of a block of a linear pencil of operators with positive semidefinite operator coefficients, are investigated. The latter subclass is a generalization of the class of characteristic matrix functions of passive 2n-poles considered as functions of impedances of its elements, which was introduced …
We study in this paper an abstract class of Klein-Gordon equations: \[ \p_{t}^{2}ϕ(t)- 2ık \p_{t}ϕ(t)+ h ϕ(t)=0, \] where $ϕ: \rr\to \cH$, $\cH$ is a (complex) Hilbert space, and $h$, $k$ are self-adjoint, resp. symmetric operators on $\cH$. We consider their generators $H$ (resp. $K$) in the two natural spaces of Cauchy data, the energy (resp. charge) spaces. We do not assume that the dynamics generated by $H$ or $K$ has any positive conserved quantity, in particular these operators may have complex spectrum. Assuming conditions on $h$ and $k$ which allow to use the theory of selfadjoint oper…
Let $U$ be an operator in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_{0}$, and let $\mathcal{K}\subset\mathcal{H}_{0}$ be a closed and invariant subspace. Suppose there is a period-2 unitary operator $J$ in $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ such that $JUJ=U^*$, and $PJP \geq 0$, where $P$ denotes the projection of $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ onto $\mathcal{K}$. We show that there is then a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K})$, a contractive operator $W:\mathcal{K}\to\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K})$, and a selfadjoint operator $S=S(U)$ in $\mathcal{H}(\mathcal{K})$ such that $W^*W=PJP$, $W$ has dense range, and $SW=WUP$. Moreover, given…
We show that the analyticity of semigroups $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of (not necessarily positive) selfadjoint contractive Fourier multipliers on $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces of any abelian locally compact group is preserved by the tensorisation of the identity operator $\mathrm{Id}_X$ of a Banach space $X$ for a large class of K-convex Banach spaces, answering partially a conjecture of Pisier. The result is even new for semigroups of Fourier multipliers acting on $\mathrm{L}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The proof relies on the use of noncommutative Banach spaces and we give a more general result for semigroups of Fou…
With a closed symmetric operator $A$ in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ a triple $Π=\{{\mathcal H},Γ_0,Γ_1\}$ of a Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$ and two abstract trace operators $Γ_0$ and $Γ_1$ from $A^*$ to ${\mathcal H}$ is called a generalized boundary triple for $A^*$ if an abstract analogue of the second Green's formula holds. Various classes of generalized boundary triples are introduced and corresponding Weyl functions $M$ are investigated. The most important ones for applications are specific classes of (essentially) unitary boundary triples which guarantee that the Weyl functions of bo…
We give a new characterization of the class ${\bf N}^0_{\mathfrak M}[-1,1]$ of the operator-valued in the Hilbert space ${\mathfrak M}$ Nevanlinna functions that admit representations as compressed resolvents ($m$-functions) of selfadjoint contractions. We consider the automorphism ${\bf Γ}:$ $M(λ){\mapsto}M_{\bf Γ}(λ):=\left((λ^2-1)M(λ)\right)^{-1}$ of the class ${\bf N}^0_{\mathfrak M}[-1,1]$ and construct a realization of $M_{\bf Γ}(λ)$ as a compressed resolvent. The unique fixed point of ${\bfΓ}$ is the $m$-function of the block-operator Jacobi matrix related to the Chebyshev polynomials o…
The classical concept of $Q$-functions associated to symmetric and selfadjoint operators due to M.G. Krein and H. Langer is extended in such a way that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in the theory of elliptic differential equations can be interpreted as a generalized $Q$-function. For couplings of uniformly elliptic second order differential expression on bounded and unbounded domains explicit Krein type formulas for the difference of the resolvents and trace formulas in an $H^2$-framework are obtained.
We introduce a noncommutative analogue of the absolute value of a regular operator acting on a noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-space. We equally prove that two classical operator norms, the regular norm and the decomposable norm are identical. We also describe precisely the regular norm of several classes of regular multipliers. This includes Schur multipliers and Fourier multipliers on some unimodular locally compact groups which can be approximated by discrete groups in various senses. A main ingredient is to show the existence of a bounded projection from the space of completely bounded $\mat…
The wave operators $W_\pm(H_1,H_0)$ of two selfadjoint operators $H_0$ and $H_1$ are analyzed at asymptotic spectral values. Sufficient conditions for $\|(W_\pm(H_1,H_0)-P_{1}^\mathrm{ac}P_{0}^\mathrm{ac})f(H_0)\| <\infty$ are given, where $P_{j}^\mathrm{ac}$ projects onto the subspace of absolutely continuous spectrum of $H_j$ and $f$ is an unbounded function ($f$-boundedness), both in the case of trace-class perturbations and in terms of the high-energy behaviour of the boundary values of the resolvent of $H_0$ (smooth method). Examples include $f$-boundedness for the perturbed polyharmonic …
