A main theme of the paper is a conjecture of Bloch-Kato on the image of $p$-adic regulator maps for a proper smooth variety $X$ over an algebraic number field $k$. The conjecture for a regulator map of particular degree and weight is related to finiteness of two arithmetic objects: One is the $p$-primary torsion part of the Chow group in codimension 2 of $X$. Another is an unramified cohomology group of $X$. As an application, for a regular model ${\mathscr X}$ of $X$ over the integer ring of $k$, we show an injectivity result on torsion of a cycle class map from the Chow group in codimension 2 of ${\mathscr X}$ to a new $p$-adic cohomology of ${\mathscr X}$ introduced by the second author, which is a candidate of the conjectural étale motivic cohomology with finite coefficients of Beilinson-Lichtenbaum.
In this paper we prove a finiteness result concerning the Chow group of zero-cycles for varieties over $p$-adic local fields. In this final version, there are several corrections concerning mathematical symbols and reference to related known results.
We study the variation of the convergence Newton polygon of a differential equation along a smooth Berkovich curve over a non-archimedean complete valued field of characteristic 0. Relying on work of the second author who investigated its properties on affinoid domains of the affine line, we prove that its slopes give rise to continuous functions that factorize by the retraction through a locally finite subgraph of the curve.
I prove the surjectivity of the $p$-adic regulator from Quillen's $K_2$ of Tate curve to the $p$-adic etale cohomology group when the base field is contained in a cyclotomic extension of $Q_p$. This implies the finiteness of torsion part of $K_1$ of Tate curves thanks to Suslin's exact sequence.
We provide an effective version of Katz' criterion for finiteness of the monodromy group of a lisse, pure of weight zero, $\ell$-adic sheaf on a normal variety over a finite field, depending on the numerical complexity of the sheaf
We develop some of the foundations of affinoid pre-adic spaces without Noetherian or finiteness hypotheses. We give some explicit examples of non-adic affinoid pre-adic spaces (including a locally perfectoid one). On the positive side, we also show that if every affinoid subspace of an affinoid pre-adic space is uniform, then the structure presheaf is a sheaf; note in particular that we assume no finiteness hypotheses on our rings here. One can use our result to give a new proof that the spectrum of a perfectoid algebra is an adic space.

In this paper, we construct Chern class maps and cycle class maps with values in p-adic étale Tate twists [S2]. We also relate the p-adic étale Tate twists with the finite part of Bloch-Kato. As an application, we prove that the integral part of p-adic regulator maps has values in the finite part of Galois cohomology under certain assumptions.
Let $K$ be an unramified $p$-adic local field and let $W$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Let $(X,S)/W$ be a smooth proper scheme together with a normal crossings divisor. We show that there are only finitely many log crystalline $\mathbb Z_{p^f}$-local systems over $X_K\setminus S_K$ of given rank and with geometrically absolutely irreducible residual representation, up to twisting by a character. The proof uses $p$-adic nonabelian Hodge theory and a finiteness result due Abe/Lafforgue.
We show that classical Chern classes from higher ($p$-adic) $K$-theory to syntomic cohomology extend to logarithmic syntomic cohomology. These Chern classes are compatible -- in a suitable sense -- with addition, products, and $λ$-operations. They are also compatible with the canonical Gysin sequences and, via period maps, with logarithmic étale Chern classes. Moreover, they induce logarithmic crystalline Chern classes. This uses as a critical new ingredient the recent comparison of syntomic cohomology with $p$-adic nearby cycles and $p$-adic motivic cohomology.
In this thesis we construct a modified version of Karoubi's relative Chern character for smooth varieties over the complex numbers or the ring of integers in a p-adic number field. Comparison results with the Deligne-Beilinson Chern character and the p-adic Borel regulator constructed by Huber and Kings are proven. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of Burgos' theorem that Borel's regulator is twice Beilinson's regulator.
Let $K$ be an unramified $p$-adic local field and let $W$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Let $(X,S)/W$ be a smooth proper scheme together with a simple normal crossings divisor and fix positive integers $r$ and $f$. We show that the set of absolutely irreducible representations $π_1(X_{\bar K})\rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_r(\mathbb{Z}_{p^f})$ that come from log crystalline $\mathbb Z_{p^f}$-local systems over $(X_K,S_K)$ of rank $r$ is finite. The proof uses $p$-adic nonabelian Hodge theory and a finiteness result due Abe/Lafforgue.
In this note we describe instances where values of the $K$-theoretical regulator map evaluated on topological cycles equal entropies of topological actions by a group $Γ$. These entropies can also be described by determinants on the von Neumann algebra of $Γ$. The relations were first observed for real regulators. The latter have $p$-adic analogues and both $p$-adic entropy and $p$-adic determinants were then defined so that similar relations hold as in the real case. We describe this $p$-adic theory in the second part of the paper. This note is almost entirely a survey of known results with t…
We construct a variant of Karoubi's relative Chern character for smooth, separated schemes over the ring of integers in a p-adic field and prove a comparison with the rigid syntomic regulator. For smooth projective schemes we further relate the relative Chern character to the etale p-adic regulator via the Bloch-Kato exponential map. This reproves a result of Huber and Kings for the spectrum of the ring of integers and generalizes it to all smooth projective schemes as above.
We prove that for any field k of characteristic p>0, any separated scheme X of finite type over k, and any overconvergent F-isocrystal E over X, the rigid cohomology H^i(X, E) and rigid cohomology with compact supports H^i_c(X,E) are finite dimensional vector spaces. We also establish Poincare duality and the Kunneth formula with coefficients. The arguments use a pushforward construction in relative dimension 1, based on a relative version of Crew's conjecture on the quasi-unipotence of certain p-adic differential equations.
We construct Λ-adic de Rham and crystalline analogues of Hida's ordinary Λ-adic etale cohomology, and by exploiting the geometry of integral models of modular curves over the cyclotomic extension of \Q_p, we prove appropriate finiteness and control theorems in each case. We then employ integral p-adic Hodge theory to prove Λ-adic comparison isomorphisms between our cohomologies and Hida's etale cohomology. As applications of our work, we provide a "cohomological" construction of the family of (ϕ,Γ)-modules attached to Hida's ordinary Λ-adic etale cohomology by Dee, and we give a new and purely…
We prove a finiteness result for the p-adic cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower. For any n>=1 and p-adic field F, this provides a canonical functor from admissible p-adic representations of GL_n(F) towards admissible p-adic representations of Gal_F x D^*, where Gal_F is the absolute Galois group of F, and D/F is the central division algebra of invariant 1/n. Moreover, we verify a local-global-compatibility statement for this correspondence, and compatibility with the patching construction of Caraiani-Emerton-Gee-Geraghty-Paskunas-Shin.
We define complexes analogous to Goncharov's complexes for the K-theory of discrete valuation rings of characteristic zero. Under suitable assumptions in K-theory, there is a map from the cohomology of those complexes to the K-theory of the ring. In case the ring is the localization of the ring of integers in a number field, there are no assumptions necessary. We compute the composition of our map to the K-theory with the syntomic regulator. The result can be described in terms of a p-adic polylogarithm. Finally, we apply our theory in order to compute the regulator to syntomic cohomology on B…
The main new result is the computation of the degeneration of l-adic Eisenstein classes at the cusps. This is done by relating it to the degeneration of the elliptic polylog. These classes come from K-theory and their Hodge regulator can also be computed (see: Dirichlet motives via modula curves, on the K-theory server). This gives a new proof of a comparison conjecture of Bloch and Kato which was used in the proof of their Tamagawa number conjecture for the Riemann zeta-function. The paper contains appendices on the definition of the classical and elliptic polylog, its degeneration and the co…
In this paper we prove that the $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$-valued cohomology, introduced in [9] is finite dimensional for smooth curves over Laurent series fields $k((t))$ in positive characteristic, and forms an $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$-lattice inside `classical' $\mathcal{E}_K$-valued rigid cohomology. We do so by proving a suitable version of the p-adic local monodromy theory over $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$, and then using an étale pushforward for smooth curves to reduce to the case of $\mathbb{A}^1$. We then introduce $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$-valued cohomology with compact supports, and again prov…
In this article, we define the l-adic homology for a morphism of schemes satisfying certain finiteness conditions. This homology has these functors similar to the Chow groups: proper push-forward, flat pull-back, base change, cap-product, etc. In particular on singular varieties, this kind of l-adic homology behaves much better that the classical l-adic cohomology. As an application, we give an much easier approach to construct the cycle maps for arbitrary algebraic schemes over fields of finite cohomology dimension. And we prove these cycle maps kill the algebraic equivalences and commute wit…
Suppose L is any finite algebraic extension of either the ordinary rational numbers or the p-adic rational numbers. Also let g_1,...,g_k be polynomials in n variables, with coefficients in L, such that the total number of monomial terms appearing in at least one g_i is exactly m. We prove that the maximum number of isolated roots of G:=(g_1,...,g_k) in L^n is finite and depends solely on (m,n,L), i.e., is independent of the degrees of the g_i. We thus obtain an arithmetic analogue of Khovanski's Theorem on Fewnomials, extending earlier work of Denef, Van den Dries, Lipshitz, and Lenstra.
Let f: A^N \to A^N be a regular polynomial automorphism defined over a number field K. For each place v of K, we construct the v-adic Green functions G_{f,v} and G_{f^{-1},v} (i.e., the v-adic canonical height functions) for f and f^{-1}. Next we introduce for f the notion of good reduction at v, and using this notion, we show that the sum of v-adic Green functions over all v gives rise to a canonical height function for f that satisfies the Northcott-type finiteness property. Using previous results, we recover results on arithmetic properties of f-periodic points and non f-periodic points. We…
We examine groups whose resonance varieties, characteristic varieties and Sigma-invariants have a natural arithmetic group symmetry, and we explore implications on various finiteness properties of subgroups. We compute resonance varieties, characteristic varieties and Alexander polynomials of Torelli groups, and we show that all subgroups containing the Johnson kernel have finite first Betti number, when the genus is at least four. We also prove that, in this range, the $I$-adic completion of the Alexander invariant is finite-dimensional, and the Kahler property for the Torelli group implies t…
Let $X$ be a variety defined over a local field $K$ of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with a totally degenerate reduction in the sense of Raskind and Xarles. Generalizing earlier work of Raskind and Xarles and relying on some conjectures we define a map, which we call the toric regulator, from the various motivic cohomology groups of $X$ to certain $p$-adically uniformized tori over $K$. This construction captures the part of the étale regulators on $X$ that land in the Galois cohomology of the submodules of cohomology which are extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_l$ by $\mathbb{Z}_l(1)$, simultaneously f…
The Shafarevich conjecture for K3 surfaces asserts the finiteness of isomorphism classes of K3 surfaces over a fixed number field admitting good reduction away from a fixed finite set of finite places. André proved this conjecture for polarized K3 surfaces of fixed degree, and recently She proved it for polarized K3 surfaces of unspecified degree. In this paper, we prove a certain generalization of their results, which is stated by the unramifiedness of l-adic étale cohomology groups for K3 surfaces over finitely generated fields of characteristic 0. As a corollary, we get the original Shafare…
Over any smooth algebraic variety over a $p$-adic local field $k$, we construct the de Rham comparison isomorphisms for the étale cohomology with partial compact support of de Rham $\mathbb Z_p$-local systems, and show that they are compatible with Poincaré duality and with the canonical morphisms among such cohomology. We deduce these results from their analogues for rigid analytic varieties that are Zariski open in some proper smooth rigid analytic varieties over $k$. In particular, we prove finiteness of étale cohomology with partial compact support of any $\mathbb Z_p$-local systems, and e…
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic etale cohomology groups of rigid spaces over a local field. We prove that the alternating sum of the traces of the action is an integer and is independent of l when either the rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. We modify the argument of T. Saito to prove a result on l-independence for nearby cycle cohomology, which leads to our l-independence result for smooth rigid spaces. In the general case, we use the finiteness theorem of R. Huber, which requires the restriction on the c…
Those are the notes for the 2015 Summer Research Institute on Algebraic Geometry. We report on Deligne's finiteness theorem for $\ell$-adic representations on smooth varieties defined over a finite field, on its crystalline version, and on how the geometric étale fundamental group of a smooth projective variety defined over a characteristic $p>0$ field controls crystals on the infinitesimal site and should control those on the crystalline site. v2: last results added to the report, and some typos corrected.
Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang i…
We study a local to global principle for certain higher zero-cycles over global fields. We thereby verify a conjecture of Colliot-Thélène for these cycles. Our main tool are the Kato conjectures proved by Jannsen, Kerz and Saito. Our approach also allows to reprove the ramified global class field theory of Kato and Saito. Finally, we apply the Kato conjectures to study the $p$-adic cycle class map over henselian discrete valuation rings of mixed characteristic and to deduce finiteness theorems for arithmetic schemes in low degree.
We show the surjectivity of a specialisation map on higher $(0,1)$-cycles for a smooth projective scheme over an excellent henselian discrete valuation ring. This gives evidence for a conjecture stated in an article of Kerz, Esnault and Wittenberg saying that base change holds for such schemes in general for motivic cohomology in degrees $(i,d)$ for fixed $d$ being the relative dimension over the base. Furthermore, the specialisation map we study is related to a finiteness conjecture for the $n$-torsion of $CH_0(X)$, where $X$ is a variety over a $p$-adic field.
In this paper we prove the Tamagawa number conjecture of Bloch and Kato for CM elliptic curves using a new explicit description of the specialization of the elliptic polylogarithm. The Tamagawa number conjecture describes the special values of the L-function of a CM elliptic curve in terms of the regulator maps of the K-theory of the variety into Deligne and etale cohomology. The regulator map to Deligne cohomology was computed by Deninger with the help of the Eisenstein symbol. For the Tamagawa number conjecture one needs an understanding of the $p$-adic regulator on the subspace of K-theory …
We compare various groups of 0-cycles on quasi-projective varieties over a field. As applications, we show that for certain singular projective varieties, the Levine-Weibel Chow group of 0-cycles coincides with the corresponding Friedlander-Voevodsky motivic cohomology. We also show that over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus on a smooth projective variety with respect to a reduced divisor coincides with the Suslin homology of the complement of the divisor. We prove several generalizations of the finiteness theorem of Saito and Sa…
