In this thesis we construct a modified version of Karoubi's relative Chern character for smooth varieties over the complex numbers or the ring of integers in a p-adic number field. Comparison results with the Deligne-Beilinson Chern character and the p-adic Borel regulator constructed by Huber and Kings are proven. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of Burgos' theorem that Borel's regulator is twice Beilinson's regulator.
We construct a variant of Karoubi's relative Chern character for smooth, separated schemes over the ring of integers in a p-adic field and prove a comparison with the rigid syntomic regulator. For smooth projective schemes we further relate the relative Chern character to the etale p-adic regulator via the Bloch-Kato exponential map. This reproves a result of Huber and Kings for the spectrum of the ring of integers and generalizes it to all smooth projective schemes as above.
We show that classical Chern classes from higher ($p$-adic) $K$-theory to syntomic cohomology extend to logarithmic syntomic cohomology. These Chern classes are compatible -- in a suitable sense -- with addition, products, and $λ$-operations. They are also compatible with the canonical Gysin sequences and, via period maps, with logarithmic étale Chern classes. Moreover, they induce logarithmic crystalline Chern classes. This uses as a critical new ingredient the recent comparison of syntomic cohomology with $p$-adic nearby cycles and $p$-adic motivic cohomology.
In a parallel way to the work of Wang, we define higher order characteristic classes associated with the Chern character, generalizing the work of Bott-Chern and Gillet-Soulé on secondary characteristic classes. Our formalism is simplicial and the computations are easier. As a consequence, we obtain the comparison of Borel and Beilinson regulators and an explicit formula for the real single-valued function associated with the Grasmannian polylogarithm.
A map from the higher arithmetic $K$-group defined by the author to the higher arithmetic Chow group constructed by Burgos and Feliu is given. It is a higher extension of the arithmetic Chern character established by Gillet and Soulé, and it can also be regarded as an analogue of Beilinson's regulator in Arakelov geometry. It is shown that this map is compatible with the pull-back map and the product structure.
In this paper, we construct Chern class maps and cycle class maps with values in p-adic étale Tate twists [S2]. We also relate the p-adic étale Tate twists with the finite part of Bloch-Kato. As an application, we prove that the integral part of p-adic regulator maps has values in the finite part of Galois cohomology under certain assumptions.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic 0 and $\mathcal{A}$ a curved $k$-algebra. We obtain a Chern-Weil-type formula for the Chern character of a perfect $\mathcal{A}$-module taking values in $HN_0^{II}(\mathcal{A})$, the negative cyclic homology of the second kind associated to $\mathcal{A}$, when $\mathcal{A}$ satisfies a certain smoothness condition.
We construct a quasi-inverse of the cochain map on the negative cyclic complexes of the second kind induced from the quasi-Yoneda embedding on a curved dg algebra. This gives an explicit formula for the Chern character of a perfect module.
Classical Chern-Weil theory proves existence of a ring homomorphism - the Chern character - from the Grothendieck ring of locally free finite rank A-modules to the algebraic de Rham cohomology of A. In this paper we prove existence of a ring homomorphism from the Grothendieck ring of locally free finite rank A-modules with an L-connection to the Lie-Rinehart cohomology of L, where L is a Lie-Rinehart algebra. As a corollary we get the classical Chern character.
We prove an integrality property of the Chern character with values in Chow groups. As a consequence we obtain, for a prime number p, a construction of the p-1 first homological Steenrod operations on Chow groups modulo p and p-primary torsion, over an arbitrary field. We provide applications to the study of correspondences between algebraic varieties.
Using Chern character, we construct a natural transformation from the local Hilbert functor to a functor of Artin rings defined from Hochschild homology, which allows us to reconstruct the semi-regularity map and the infinitesimal Abel-Jacobi map. Combining that construction of the semi-regularity map with obstruction theory of functors of Artin rings, we give a different proof of a theorem of Bloch stating that the semi-regularity map annihilates certain obstructions to embedded deformations of a closed subvariety which is a locally complete intersection.
For a two-periodic complex of vector bundles, Polishchuk and Vaintrob have constructed its localized Chern character. We explore some basic properties of this localized Chern character. In particular, we show that the cosection localization defined by Kiem and Li is equivalent to a localized Chern character operation for the associated two-periodic Koszul complex, strengthening a work of Chang, Li, and Li. We apply this equivalence to the comparison of virtual classes of moduli of epsilon-stable quasimaps and moduli of the corresponding LG epsilon-stable quasimaps, in full generality.
Products, multiplicative Chern characters, and finite coefficients, are unarguably among the most important tools in algebraic K-theory. Although they admit numerous different constructions, they are not yet fully understood at the conceptual level. In this article, making use of the theory of non-commutative motives, we change this state of affairs by characterizing these constructions in terms of simple, elegant, and precise universal properties. We illustrate the potential of our results by developing two of its manyfold consequences: (1) the multiplicativity of the negative Chern character…
There is a Chern character from K-theory to negative cyclic homology. We show that it preserves the decomposition coming from Adams operations, at least in characteristic 0. This is done by using infinitesimal cohomology to reduce to the case of a nilpotent ideal (which had been established by Cathelineau some time ago).
The Chern character maps are one of the most important working tools in mathematics. Although they admit numerous different constructions, they are not yet fully understood at the conceptual level. In this note we eliminate this gap by characterizing the Chern character maps, from the Grothendieck group to the (negative) cyclic homology groups, in terms of simple universal properties.
In this paper we construct a bivariant Chern character for the equivariant KK-theory of a totally disconnected group with values in bivariant equivariant cohomology in the sense of Baum and Schneider. We prove in particular that the complexified left hand side of the Baum-Connes conjecture for a totally disconnected group is isomorphic to cosheaf homology. Moreover, it is shown that our transformation extends the Chern character defined by Baum and Schneider for profinite groups.
The aim of this note is to point out that Chern characters can be computed using curvatures o ``super-connections up to homotopy'. We also present an application to the vanishing theorem for Lie algebroids which is at the origin of new secondary classes of algebroids (Fernandes), hence, in particular, of Poisson manifolds.
We propose a categorification of the Chern character that refines earlier work of Toën and Vezzosi and of Ganter and Kapranov. If X is an algebraic stack, our categorified Chern character is a symmetric monoidal functor from a category of mixed noncommutative motives over X, which we introduce, to S1-equivariant perfect complexes on the derived free loop stack LX. As an application of the theory, we show that Toën and Vezzosi's secondary Chern character factors through secondary K-theory. Our techniques depend on a careful investigation of the functoriality of traces in symmetric monoidal (inf…
In the 80's, Quillen constructed a de Rham relative cohomology class associated to a smooth morphism between vector bundles, that we call the relative Quillen Chern character. In the first part of this paper we prove the multiplicativ property of the relative Quillen Chern character. Then we obtain a Riemann-Roch formula between the relative Chern character of the Bott morphism and the relative Thom form.
We show that the Chern-Connes character from Kasparov's bivariant K-theory to bivariant local cyclic cohomology is not always rationally injective. Counterexamples are provided by the reduced group $C^*$-algebras of word-hyperbolic groups with Kazhdan's property (T). The proof makes essential use of Skandalis' work on K-nuclearity and of Lafforgue's recent demonstration of the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients for word-hyperbolic groups.
We construct a Chern character map from the K-theory of the reduced C^* algebra of the p-adic GL(n) with values in the periodic cyclic homology of the Schwartz algebra of this group. We prove that this map is an isomorphism after tensoring with C by comparing an explicit formula, stated in the algebraic case by Cuntz and Quillen, with the classical Chern character. This Chern character is a crucial ingredient in the proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture for the p-adic GL(n) due to Baum, Higson and Plymen.
In this paper we compute the K-theory (algebraic and topological) and entire periodic cyclic homology of compact Lie group C*-algebras, define Chern characters between them and show that the Chern characters in both topological and algebraic cases are isomorphisms.
We construct a Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg-type quasi-isomorphism for the negative cyclic homology of the category of global matrix factorizations on a smooth separated scheme of finite type over a field. The map is explicit enough to yield a negative cyclic Chern character formula for global matrix factorizations. We also extend these results to the equivariant case of a finite group.
Following the idea of Galois-type extensions and entwining structures, we define the notion of a principal extension of noncommutative algebras. We show that modules associated to such extensions via finite-dimensional corepresentations are finitely generated projective, and determine an explicit formula for the Chern character applied to the thus obtained modules.
We give a survey of cyclic homology/cohomology theory including a detailed discussion of cyclic theories for various classes of topological algebras. We show how to associate cyclic classes with Fredholm modules and $K$-theory classes and how to construct a completely general bivariant Chern-Connes character from bivariant $K$-theory to bivariant cyclic theory.
We define and study equivariant analytic and local cyclic homology for smooth actions of totally disconnected groups on bornological algebras. Our approach contains equivariant entire cyclic cohomology in the sense of Klimek, Kondracki and Lesniewski as a special case and provides an equivariant extension of the local cyclic theory developped by Puschnigg. As a main result we construct a multiplicative Chern-Connes character for equivariant KK-theory with values in equivariant local cyclic homology.
We give details of the proof of the remark made in \cite{G2} that the Chern characters of the canonical generators on the K homology of the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ are not invariant under the natural $SU_q(2)$ coaction. Furthermore, the conjecture made in \cite{G2} about the nontriviality of the twisted Chern character coming from an odd equivariant spectral triple on $SU_q(2)$ is settled in the affirmative.
In this paper we compute the K-theory (algebraic and topological) and entire periodic cyclic homology for compact quantum groups, define Chern characters between them and show that the Chern characters in both topological and algebraic cases are isomorphisms modulo torsion. The case of compact Lie group C*-algebras was treated in <A HREF="http://www.math.uiuc.edu/K-theory/0257">Non-Commutative Chern characters of compact Lie groups C*-algebras, 0257</A> , a revised version of which was accepted for publication in <I>K-Theory.</I>
In this paper we prove a categorification of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. Our result implies in particular a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for Toën and Vezzosi's secondary Chern character. As a main application, we establish a comparison between the Toën-Vezzosi Chern character and the classical Chern character, and show that the categorified Chern character recovers the classical de Rham realization.
In this note, we give a short proof of the localization formula for the loop space Chern character of a compact Riemannian spin manifold M, using the rescaled spinor bundle on the tangent groupoid associated to M.
We show that the universal odd Chern form, defined on the stable unitary group $U$, extends to the loop group $LU$ in a way that is closed with respect to an equivariant-type differential. This provides an odd analogue to the Bismut-Chern form. We also describe the associated transgression form, the so-called Bismut-Chern-Simons form, and explicate some properties it inherits as a differential form on the space of maps of a cylinder into the stable unitary group. As a corollary, we obtain the Chern character homomorphism from odd K-theory to the periodic cohomology of the free loop space, repr…
We offer a short proof of Connes' Hochschild class of the Chern character formula for non-unital semifinite spectral triples. The proof is simple due to its reliance on the authors' extensive work on a refined version of the local index formula, and the consequent understanding of the passage from generalised residues of zeta functions to representations in terms of singular traces.
A version of smooth K-theory is constructed, which is adapted to the total Chern class instead of the Chern character (contrarily to previous theories). Some total Chern class morphism from this K-theory to Cheeger-Simons differential characters is constructed. This answers a question raised by U. Bunke.
We compute the Chern-Connes character (a map from the $K$-theory of a C$^*$-algebra under the action of a Lie group to the cohomology of its Lie algebra) for the $L^2$-norm closure of the algebra of all classical zero-order pseudodifferential operators on the sphere under the canonical action of ${\rm SO}(3)$. We show that its image is $\mathbb{R}$ if the trace is the integral of the principal symbol.
We introduce the notion of a {\vartheta}-summable Fredholm module over a locally convex dg algebra Ω and construct its Chern character as a cocycle on the entire cyclic complex of Ω, extending the construction of Jaffe, Lesniewski and Osterwalder to a differential graded setting. Using this Chern character, we prove an index theorem involving an abstract version of a Bismut-Chern character constructed by Getzler, Jones and Petrack in the context of loop spaces. Our theory leads to a rigorous construction of the path integral for N=1/2 supersymmetry which satisfies a Duistermaat-Heckman type lo…
We define a map of simplicial presheaves, the Chern character, that assigns to every sequence of composable non connection preserving isomorphisms of vector bundles with holomorphic connections an appropriate sequence of holomorphic forms. We apply this Chern character map to the Cech nerve of a good cover of a complex manifold and assemble the data by passing to the totalization to obtain a map of simplicial sets. In simplicial degree 0, this map gives a formula for the Chern character of a bundle in terms of the clutching functions. In simplicial degree 1, this map gives a formula for the Ch…
If I is a nilpotent ideal in a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra $A$, Goodwillie defined two isomorphisms from $K_*(A,I)$ to negative cyclic homology, $HN_*(A,I)$. One is the relative version of the absolute Chern character, and the other is defined using rational homotopy theory. The question of whether they agree was implicit in Goodwillie's 1986 Annals paper. In this paper, we show that the two isomorphisms agree. Here are three applications. 1.Cathelineau proved that the rational homotopy character is compatible with the $λ$-filtration. It follows that the relative Chern character is also compatible wi…
In previous work we generalised both the odd and even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. Our proofs are novel even in the setting of the original theorem and rely on the introduction of a function valued cocycle (called the resolvent cocycle) which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A. In this paper we show that this resolvent cocycle `almost' represents the Chern character, and assuming analytic continuation properties for zeta functions, we show that the associate…
Using similarities between topological $K$-theory and periodic cyclic homology we show that, after tensoring with $\mathbb C$, for certain Fréchet algebras the Chern character provides an isomorphism between these functors. This is applied to prove that the Hecke algebra and the Schwartz algebra of a reductive $p$-adic group have isomorphic periodic cyclic homology. The main theorem in the first version was incorrect for algebras related to noncompact manifolds. This has no effect on the results concerning p-adic groups. In the appendix we show that an analogous cohomological result does hold …
We study notions of measurability for singular traces, and characterise universal measurability for operators in Dixmier ideals. This measurability result is then applied to improve on the various proofs of Connes' identification of the Hochschild class of the Chern character of Dixmier summable spectral triples. The measurability results show that the identification of the Hochschild class is independent of the choice of singular trace. As a corollary we obtain strong information on the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of operators naturally associated to spectral triples (A,H,D) and Hochschild…
For three classes of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold with boundary which have `geometric K-theory', namely the `transmission algebra' introduced by Boutet de Monvel, the `zero algebra' introduced by Mazzeo and the `scattering algebra' from [MR95k:58168] we give explicit formulae for the Chern character of the index bundle in terms of the symbols (including normal operators at the boundary) of a Fredholm family of fibre operators. This involves appropriate descriptions, in each case, of the cohomology with compact supports in the interior of the total space of a vect…
In this paper we give a proof of the Lefschetz fixed point formula of Freed$^{\rm [1]}$ for an orientation-reversing involution on an odd dimensional spin manifold by using the direct geometric method introduced in [2] and then we generalize this formula under the noncommutative geometry framework.
This article aims to explore new perspectives offered by Kasparov's recent work on transverse index theory in the context of actions of compact Lie groups on a manifold, and hints at potential connections to the work of Berline-Vergne and Paradan-Vergne.
We observe that the von Neumann envelope of the quantum algebra of functions on the normalizer of thegroup $\SU(1,1)\cong \SL(2,\mathbb R)$ in $\SL(2,\mathbb C)$ via deformation quantization contains the von Neumann algebraic quantum normalizer of $\SU(1,1)$ in the frame work of Waronowicz-Korogodsky. We then use the technique of reduction to the maximal subgroup to compute the K-theory, the periodic cyclic homology and the corresponding Chern-Connes character.
For an orbifold X and $α\in H^3(X, Z)$, we introduce the twisted cohomology $H^*_c(X, α)$ and prove that the Connes-Chern character establishes an isomorphism between the twisted K-groups $K_α^* (X) \otimes C$ and twisted cohomology $H^*_c(X, α)$. This theorem, on the one hand, generalizes a classical result of Baum-Connes, Brylinski-Nistor, and others, that if X is an orbifold then the Chern character establishes an isomorphism between the K-groups of X tensored with C, and the compactly-supported cohomology of the inertia orbifold. On the other hand, it also generalizes a recent result of Ad…
Let $X$ be a compact Hausdorff space, let $Γ$ be a discrete group that acts continuously on $X$ from the right, define $\widetilde{X} = \{(x,γ) \in X \times Γ: x\cdotγ= x\}$, and let $Γ$ act on $\widetilde{X}$ via the formula $(x,γ)\cdotα= (x\cdotα, α^{-1}γα)$. Results of P. Baum and A. Connes, along with facts about the Chern character, imply that $K^i_Γ(X) \otimes \mathbb{C} \cong K^i(\widetilde{X}\slashΓ) \otimes \mathbb{C}$ for $i = 0, -1$. In this note, we present an example where the groups $K^i_Γ(X)$ and $K^i(\widetilde{X}\slashΓ)$ are not isomorphic.
We develop a general procedure, based on the renormalized eta-cochain, which allows to find local representatives of the bivariant Chern character of finitely summable quasihomomorphisms. In particular, using zeta-function renormalization we obtain a bivariant generalization of the Connes-Moscovici residue formula, and explain the link with chiral and multiplicative anomalies in quantum field theory.
We examine Hopf cyclic cohomology in the same context as the analysis of the geometry of loop spaces $LX$ in derived algebraic geometry and the resulting close relationship between $S^1$-equivariant quasi-coherent sheaves on $LX$ and $D_X$-modules. Furthermore, the Hopf setting serves as a toy case for the categorification of Chern character theory. More precisely, this examination naturally leads to a definition of mixed anti-Yetter-Drinfeld contramodules which reduces to that of the usual mixed complexes for the trivial Hopf algebra and generalizes the notion of stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld c…
In this paper, we construct for higher twists that arise from cohomotopy classes, the Chern character in higher twisted K-theory, that maps into higher twisted cohomology. We show that it gives rise to an isomorphism between higher twisted K-theory and higher twisted cohomology over the reals. Finally we compute spherical T-duality in higher twisted K-theory and higher twisted cohomology in very general cases.
We study the Helton-Howe trace and the Connes-Chern character for Toeplitz operators on weighted Bergman spaces via the idea of quantization. We prove a local formula for the large $t$-limit of the Connes-Chern character as the weight goes to infinity. And we show that the Helton-Howe trace of Toeplitz operators is independent of the weight $t$ and obtain a local formula for the Helton-Howe trace for all weighted Bergman spaces using harmonic analysis and quantization.
