In previous work we generalised both the odd and even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. Our proofs are novel even in the setting of the original theorem and rely on the introduction of a function valued cocycle (called the resolvent cocycle) which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A. In this paper we show that this resolvent cocycle `almost' represents the Chern character, and assuming analytic continuation properties for zeta functions, we show that the associated residue cocycle, which appears in our statement of the local index theorem does represent the Chern character.
We provide a proof of Connes' formula for a representative of the Hochschild class of the Chern character for (p,\infty)-summable spectral triples. Our proof is valid for all semifinite von Neumann algebras, and all integral p\geq 1. We employ the minimum possible hypotheses on the spectral triples.
We review the recent construction of semifinite spectral triples for graph C^*-algebras. These examples have inspired many other developments and we review some of these such as the relation between the semifinite index and the Kasparov product, examples of noncommutative manifolds, and an index theorem in twisted cyclic theory using a KMS state.
We propose a definition of a modular spectral triple which covers existing examples arising from KMS-states, Podles sphere and quantum SU(2). The definition also incorporates the notion of twisted commutators appearing in recent work of Connes and Moscovici. We show how a finitely summable modular spectral triple admits a twisted index pairing with unitaries satisfying a modular condition. The twist means that the dimensions of kernels and cokernels are measured with respect to two different but intimately related traces. The twisted index pairing can be expressed by pairing Chern characters i…
We generalise the even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. The proof is a variant of that for the odd case which appears in Part I. To allow for algebras with a non-trivial centre we have to establish a theory of unbounded Fredholm operators in a general semifinite von Neumann algebra and in particular prove a generalised McKean-Singer formula.
We generalise the local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. In this setting it gives a formula for spectral flow along a path joining an unbounded self adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operator, affiliated to the von Neumann algebra, to a unitarily equivalent operator. Our proof is novel even in the setting of the original theorem and relies on the introduction of a function valued cocycle which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A.
We study the index theory for actions of compact Lie groups on C*-algebras with an emphasis on principal actions. Given an invariant semifinite trace on the C*-algebra we obtain semifinite spectral triples. For circle actions we consider the relation to the dual Pimsner-Voiculescu sequence. On the way we show that the notions ``saturated'' and ``principal'' are equivalent for actions by compact Lie groups.
The Sierpinski gasket admits a locally isometric ramified self-covering. A semifinite spectral triple is constructed on the resulting solenoidal space, and its main geometrical features are discussed.

We present a definition of spectral flow relative to any norm closed ideal J in any von Neumann algebra N. Given a path D(t) of selfadjoint operators in N which are invertible in N/J, the spectral flow produces a class in K_0(J). In the case when N is semifinite, the numerical spectral flow of the path coincides with the value of trace on the associated K-class. Given a semifinite spectral triple (A,H,D) relative to a semifinite von Neumann algebra N, we construct a class [D] in KK^1(A,N') such that, for a unitary u in A, the von Neumann spectral flow between D and u*Du is equal to the Kasparo…
In previous papers, we constructed smooth (1,\infty)-summable semfinite spectral triples for graph algebras with a faithful trace, and (k,\infty)-summable semifinite spectral triples for k-graph algebras. In this paper we identify classes of graphs and k-graphs which satisfy a version of Connes' conditions for noncommutative manifolds.
In order to study continuous models of disordered topological phases, we construct an unbounded Kasparov module and a semifinite spectral triple for the crossed product of a separable $C^*$-algebra by a twisted $\mathbb{R}^d$-action. The spectral triple allows us to employ the non-unital local index formula to obtain the higher Chern numbers in the continuous setting with complex observable algebra. In addition, the pairing can be extended to a larger algebra closely related to dynamical localisation, as in the tight-binding approximation. The Kasparov module allows us to exploit the Wiener-Ho…
We initiate the study of a q-deformed geometry for quantum SU(2). In contrast with the usual properties of a spectral triple, we get that only twisted commutators between algebra elements and our Dirac operator are bounded. Furthermore, the resolvent only becomes compact when measured with respect to a trace on a semifinite von Neumann algebra which does not contain the quantum group. We show that the zeta function at the identity has a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane and that a large family of local Hochschild cocycles associated with our twisted spectral triple are twiste…
Twisted spectral triples are a twisting of the notion of spectral triple aiming at dealing with some type III geometric situations. In the first part of the paper, we give a geometric construction of the index map of a twisted spectral triple in terms of $σ$-connections on finitely generated projective modules. This makes it more transparent the analogy with the indices of Dirac operators with coefficients in vector bundles. In the second part, we give a direct construction of the Connes-Chern character of a twisted spectral, both in the invertible and non-invertible cases. Combining these two…
We construct KMS-states from $\mathrm{Li}_1$-summable semifinite spectral triples and show that in several important examples the construction coincides with well-known direct constructions of KMS-states for naturally defined flows. Under further summability assumptions the constructed KMS-state can be computed in terms of Dixmier traces. For closed manifolds, we recover the ordinary Lebesgue integral. For Cuntz-Pimsner algebras with their gauge flow, the construction produces KMS-states from traces on the coefficient algebra and recovers the Laca-Neshveyev correspondence. For a discrete group…
Examples of noncommutative self-coverings are described, and spectral triples on the base space are extended to spectral triples on the inductive family of coverings, in such a way that the covering projections are locally isometric. Such triples are shown to converge, in a suitable sense, to a semifinite spectral triple on the direct limit of the tower of coverings, which we call noncommutative solenoidal space. Some of the self-coverings described here are given by the inclusion of the fixed point algebra in a C$^*$-algebra acted upon by a finite abelian group. In all the examples treated he…
We present an ab initio approach to integration theory for nonunital spectral triples. This is done without reference to local units and in the full generality of semifinite noncommutative geometry. The main result is an equality between the Dixmier trace and generalised residue of the zeta function and heat kernel of suitable operators. We also examine definitions for integrable bounded elements of a spectral triple based on zeta function, heat kernel and Dixmier trace techniques. We show that zeta functions and heat kernels yield equivalent notions of integrability, which imply Dixmier trace…
We define the notion of von Neumann spectral triple and consider the associated index problem. We compute the analytic Chern-Connes character of such a von Neumann spectral triple and prove the corresponding local formula for its Hochschild class. This formula involves the Dixmier trace for $II_{\infty}$ von Neumann algebras. In the case of foliations, we identify this Dixmier trace with the corresponding measured Wodzicki residue.
We explain how a simple twisting of the notion of spectral triple allows to incorporate type III examples, such as those arising from the transverse geometry of codimension one foliations. Since the twisting of the commutators turns the usual hypertrace constructed out of the Dixmier trace into a twisted trace on the coordinate algebra, one would be tempted to interpret that as a manifestation of twisting at the level of cyclic cohomology, akin to that introduced by the authors in the context of Hopf cyclic cohomology. The main point of this note, besides giving simple natural examples of the …
Spectral triples for nonunital algebras model locally compact spaces in noncommutative geometry. In the present text, we prove the local index formula for spectral triples over nonunital algebras, without the assumption of local units in our algebra. This formula has been successfully used to calculate index pairings in numerous noncommutative examples. The absence of any other effective method of investigating index problems in geometries that are genuinely noncommutative, particularly in the nonunital situation, was a primary motivation for this study and we illustrate this point with two ex…
We investigate conditions on a graph $C^*$-algebra for the existence of a faithful semifinite trace. Using such a trace and the natural gauge action of the circle on the graph algebra, we construct a smooth $(1,\infty)$-summable semfinite spectral triple. The local index theorem allows us to compute the pairing with $K$-theory. This produces invariants in the $K$-theory of the fixed point algebra, and these are invariants for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of $C^*(E)$.
The analog of the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet theorem is studied for a $C^*$-dynamical system consisting of a $C^*$-algebra $A$ equipped with an ergodic action of a compact Lie group $G$. The structure of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of $G$ is used to interpret the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex with coefficients in the smooth subalgebra $\mathcal{A} \subset A$ as noncommutative differential forms on the dynamical system. We conformally perturb the standard metric, which is associated with the unique $G$-invariant state on $A$, by means of a Weyl conformal factor given by a positive invertible element o…
Witten constructed a topological quantum field theory with the Chern-Simons action as Lagrangian. We define a Chern-Simons action for 3-dimensional spectral triples. We prove gauge invariance of the Chern-Simons action, and we prove that it concurs with the classical one in the case the spectral triple comes from a 3-dimensional spin manifold. In contrast to the classical Chern-Simons action, or a noncommutative generalization of it introduced by A. H. Chamseddine, A. Connes, and M. Marcolli by use of cyclic cohomology, the formula of our definition contains a linear term which shifts the crit…
We characterize all equivariant odd spectral triples for the quantum SU(2) group acting on its L_2-space and having a nontrivial Chern character. It is shown that the dimension of an equivariant spectral triple is at least three, and given any element of the K-homology group of SU_q(2), there is an equivariant odd spectral triple of dimension 3 inducing that element. The method employed to get equivariant spectral triples in the quantum case is then used for classical SU(2), and we prove that for p<4, there does not exist any equivariant spectral triple with nontrivial K-homology class and dim…
We study the Chern-Simons action, which was defined for noncommutative spaces in general by the author, for the noncommutative 3-torus, the universal C*-algebra generated by 3 unitaries. D. Essouabri, B. Iochum, C. Levy, and A. Sitarz constructed a spectral triple for the noncommutative 3-torus. We compute the Chern-Simons action for this noncommutative space. In connection with this computation we calculate the first coefficient in the loop expansion series of the corresponding Feynman path integral with the Chern-Simons action as Lagrangian. The result is independent of the deformation matri…
An analogue of a spectral triple over SUq(2) is constructed for which the usual assumption of bounded commutators with the Dirac operator fails. An analytic expression analogous to that for the Hochschild class of the Chern character for spectral triples yields a non-trivial twisted Hochschild 3-cocycle. The problems arising from the unbounded commutators are overcome by defining a residue functional using projections to cut down the Hilbert space.
We prove a local index formula in conformal geometry by computing the Connes-Chern character for the conformal Dirac (twisted) spectral triple recently constructed by Connes-Moscovici. Following an observation of Moscovici, the computation reduces to the computation of the CM cocycle of an equivariant Dirac (ordinary) spectral triple. This computation is obtained as a straightforward consequence of a new proof of the local equivariant index theorem of Patodi, Donelly-Patodi and Gilkey. This proof is obtained by combining Getzler's rescaling with an equivariant version of Greiner's approach to …
We analyse the noncommutative space underlying the quantum group SUq(2) from the spectral point of view which is the basis of noncommutative geometry, and show how the general theory developped in our joint work with H. Moscovici applies to the specific spectral triple defined by Chakraborty and Pal. This provides the pseudo-differential calculus, the Wodzciki-type residue, and the local cyclic cocycle giving the index formula. The cochain whose coboundary is the difference between the original Chern character and the local one is given by the remainders in the rational approximation of the lo…
