6 pages; 1 figure (file=5adic.ps); needs my mildly hacked versions of amsart.cls and jams-l.cls, which are included. This is the final version and removes all ramification hypotheses, quotes some more explicit bounds for the benefit of the reader, streamlines some proofs, and corrects some more typos
Suppose L is any finite algebraic extension of either the ordinary rational numbers or the p-adic rational numbers. Also let g_1,...,g_k be polynomials in n variables, with coefficients in L, such that the total number of monomial terms appearing in at least one g_i is exactly m. We prove that the maximum number of isolated roots of G:=(g_1,...,g_k) in L^n is finite and depends solely on (m,n,L), i.e., is independent of the degrees of the g_i. We thus obtain an arithmetic analogue of Khovanski's Theorem on Fewnomials, extending earlier work of Denef, Van den Dries, Lipshitz, and Lenstra.
Withdrawn by the authors due to an error in the proof of the finite field result (Thm. 1.5): The random primes used in the proof need NOT avoid the exceptional primes from Lemma 2.7, thus leaving Thm. 1.5 unproved.
A main theme of the paper is a conjecture of Bloch-Kato on the image of $p$-adic regulator maps for a proper smooth variety $X$ over an algebraic number field $k$. The conjecture for a regulator map of particular degree and weight is related to finiteness of two arithmetic objects: One is the $p$-primary torsion part of the Chow group in codimension 2 of $X$. Another is an unramified cohomology group of $X$. As an application, for a regular model ${\mathscr X}$ of $X$ over the integer ring of $k$, we show an injectivity result on torsion of a cycle class map from the Chow group in codimension …
Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, conne…
We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
Let L be any number field or $\mathfrak{p}$-adic field and consider F:=(f_1,...,f_k) where f_i is in L[x_1,...,x_n]\{0} for all i and there are exactly m distinct exponent vectors appearing in f_1,...,f_k. We prove that F has no more than 1+(cmn(m-1)^2 log m)^n geometrically isolated roots in L^n, where c is an explicit and effectively computable constant depending only on L. This gives a significantly sharper arithmetic analogue of Khovanski's Theorem on Fewnomials and a higher-dimensional generalization of an earlier result of Hendrik W. Lenstra, Jr. for the case of a single univariate polyn…
In this paper, we consider a finiteness problem of saturated subsheaves of a hermitian locally free sheaf on an arithmetic variety. As an application, we could prove the unique existence of an arithmetic Harder-Narasimham filtration.
We investigate certain finiteness questions that arise naturally when studying approximations modulo prime powers of p-adic Galois representations coming from modular forms. We link these finiteness statements with a question by K. Buzzard concerning p-adic coefficient fields of Hecke eigenforms. Specifically, we conjecture that for fixed N, m, and prime p with p not dividing N, there is only a finite number of reductions modulo p^m of normalized eigenforms on Γ_1(N). We consider various variants of our basic finiteness conjecture, prove a weak version of it, and give some numerical evidence.
We give a new proof of the finiteness of maximal arithmetic reflection groups. Our proof is novel in that it makes no use of trace formulas or other tools from the theory of automorphic forms and instead relies on the arithmetic Margulis lemma of Fraczyk, Hurtado and Raimbault.
We introduce geometric and homological finiteness properties for countable approximate groups via coarse geometry and then study these finiteness properties for S-arithmetic reductive approximate groups. For S-arithmetic approximate groups without infinite places we show that the finiteness length is finite and compute this finiteness length explicitly. In the simple case it is one less than the sum of the local ranks. This extends the Rank Theorem of Bux, Köhl and the second author from positive characteristic to characteristic zero. Our proof is based on a geometric version of their proof, b…
Let $Γ$ be an arithmetic subgroup of $SU(d,1)$ with cusps, and let $X_Γ$ be the associated locally symmetric space. We prove that if the first inner cohomology group $H^1_!(X_Γ,\mathbb{C})$ is non-zero then the pre-image of $Γ$ in each connected cover of $SU(d,1)$ is residually finite. We also give an example of a such a group $Γ$ for which $H^1_!(X_Γ,\mathbb{C})$ is non-zero.
We prove an analogue for algebraic stacks of Hermite-Minkowski's finiteness theorem from algebraic number theory, and establish a Chevalley-Weil type theorem for integral points on stacks. As an application of our results, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich conjecture for some surfaces of general type.
We study arithmetic of the algebraic varieties defined over number fields by applying Lagrange interpolation to fibrations. Assuming the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of a certain elliptic curve, we show, for Châtelet surface bundles over curves, that the violation of Hasse principle being accounted for by the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not invariant under an arbitrary finite extension of the ground field.
This is a survey article on some recent developments in the arithmetic theory of linear algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields, written for the Notices of the AMS.
We show that if the automorphism group of a projective variety is torsion, then it is finite. Motivated by Lang's conjecture on rational points of hyperbolic varieties, we use this to prove that a projective variety with only finitely many rational points has only finitely many automorphisms. Moreover, we investigate to what extent finiteness of $S$-integral points on a variety over a number field persists over finitely generated fields. To this end, we introduce the class of mildly bounded varieties and prove a general criterion for proving this persistence.
We study the solutions of the Rosenberg--Markoff equation ax^2+by^2+cz^2 = dxyz (a generalization of the well--known Markoff equation). We specifically focus on looking for solutions in arithmetic progression that lie in the ring of integers of a number field. With the help of previous work by Alvanos and Poulakis, we give a complete decision algorithm, which allows us to prove finiteness results concerning these particular solutions. Finally, some extensive computations are presented regarding two particular cases: the generalized Markoff equation x^2+y^2+z^2 = dxyz over quadratic fields and …
This paper focuses on greedy expansions, one possible representation of numbers, and on arithmetical operations with them. Performing addition or multiplication some additional digits can appear. We study bounds on the number of such digits assuming the finiteness of the expansion of the considered sum or product, especially for the case of cubic Pisot units.
The concept of self-similarity on subsets of algebraic varieties is defined by considering algebraic endomorphisms of the variety as `similarity' maps. Self-similar fractals are subsets of algebraic varieties which can be written as a finite and disjoint union of `similar' copies. Fractals provide a framework in which, one can unite some results and conjectures in Diophantine geometry. We define a well-behaved notion of dimension for self-similar fractals. We also prove a fractal version of Roth's theorem for algebraic points on a variety approximated by elements of a fractal subset. As a cons…
In a previous paper, we have defined arithmetic extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. In the present one, we introduce an arithmetic analogue of the Atiyah extension that defines an element -- the arithmetic Atiyah class -- in a suitable arithmetic extension group. If $\overline{E}$ is a hermitian vector bundle on an arithmetic scheme $X$, its arithmetic Atiyah class is an obstruction to the algebraicity of the unitary connection on the vector bundle $E_\C$ over the complex manifold $X(\C)$ that is compatible with its holomorphic structure. We develop basic properties of the ar…
The finiteness property is an important arithmetical property of beta-expansions. We exhibit classes of Pisot numbers $β$ having the negative finiteness property, that is the set of finite $(-β)$-expansions is equal to $\mathbb{Z}[β^{-1}]$. For a class of numbers including the Tribonacci number, we compute the maximal length of the fractional parts arising in the addition and subtraction of $(-β)$-integers. We also give conditions excluding the negative finiteness property.
We study residual finiteness for cyclic central extensions of cocompact arithmetic lattices $Γ< \mathrm{PU}(n,1)$ simple type. We prove that the preimage of $Γ$ in any connected cover of $\mathrm{PU}(n,1)$, in particular the universal cover, is residually finite. This follows from a more general theorem on residual finiteness of extensions whose characteristic class is contained in the span in $H^2(Γ, \mathbb{Z})$ of the Poincaré duals to totally geodesic divisors on the ball quotient $Γ\backslash \mathbb{B}^n$. For $n \ge 4$, if $Γ$ is a congruence lattice, we prove residual finiteness of the…
In this note, we prove a finiteness result for fibers that are canonical lifts in a given elliptic fibration. The question was motivated by the authors' construction of an arithmetic Euler top, and it highlights an interesting discrepancy between the arithmetic and the classical case: in the former, it is impossible to extend the flows to a compactification of the phase space, viewed as an elliptic fibration over the space of action variables.
