In a previous paper, we have defined arithmetic extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. In the present one, we introduce an arithmetic analogue of the Atiyah extension that defines an element -- the arithmetic Atiyah class -- in a suitable arithmetic extension group. If $\overline{E}$ is a hermitian vector bundle on an arithmetic scheme $X$, its arithmetic Atiyah class is an obstruction to the algebraicity of the unitary connection on the vector bundle $E_\C$ over the complex manifold $X(\C)$ that is compatible with its holomorphic structure.
We develop basic properties of the arithmetic Atiyah class and study its vanishing in the case of hermitian line bundles. This may be translated into a concrete problem of diophantine geometry, concerning rational points of the universal vector extension of the Picard variety of $X$. We investigate this problem, which was already considered and solved in some cases by Bertrand, by using a classical transcendence result of Schneider-Lang, and we derive a finiteness result.
We also consider a geometric analog of our arithmetic situation, namely a smooth, projective variety $X$ which is fibered on a curve $C$ defined over some field $k$ of characteristic zero. To any line bundle $L$ over $X$ is attached its relative Atiyah class ${\rm at}_{X/C}L$. We describe precisely when this class vanishes. In particular, when the fixed part of the relative Picard variety of $X$ over $C$ is trivial, this holds only when the restriction of $L$ to the generic fiber $X_K$ of $X$ over $C$ is a torsion line bundle.
We show how derived completion can be used to prove an analogue of Atiyah-Segal completion for the $T$-equivariant Hermitian K-theory of a scheme $X$ with a trivial $T$-action, containing $\tfrac{1}{2}$ and satisfying the resolution property, where $T$ is a split torus of rank $t$. This result is an important first step towards a more general Atiyah-Segal completion theorem for Hermitian K-theory.
In this paper, we consider a finiteness problem of saturated subsheaves of a hermitian locally free sheaf on an arithmetic variety. As an application, we could prove the unique existence of an arithmetic Harder-Narasimham filtration.
We define and investigate extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. The 'arithmetic extension groups' we introduce are extensions by groups of analytic types of the usual extension groups attached to $Ø_X$-modules over an arithmetic scheme $X$. In this paper, we focus on the first arithmetic extension group - the elements of which may be described in terms of admissible short exact sequences of hermitian vector bundles over $X$ - and we especially consider the case when $X$ is an 'arithmetic curve', namely the spectrum $\Spec Ø_K$ of the ring of integers in some number field $K$. T…
We introduce the volume function for hermitian invertible sheaves on an arithmetic variety as an analogue of the geometric volume function. The main result of this paper is the continuity of the arithmetic volume function. As a consequence, we have the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula for a nef hermitian invertible sheaf. We also give another several applications, for example, a generalized Hodge index theorem, an arithmetic Bogomolov-Gieseker's inequality, etc.
We develop a theory of arithmetic characteristic classes of (fully decomposed) automorphic vector bundles equipped with an invariant hermitian metric. These characteristic classes have values in an arithmetic Chow ring constructed by means of differential forms with certain log-log type singularities. We first study the cohomological properties of log-log differential forms, prove a Poincaré lemma for them and construct the corresponding arithmetic Chow groups. Then we introduce the notion of log-singular hermitian vector bundles, which is a variant of the good hermitian vector bundles introdu…
We establish, for a generically big Hermitian line bundle, the convergence of truncated Harder-Narasimhan polygons and the uniform continuity of the limit. As applications, we prove a conjecture of Moriwaki asserting that the arithmetic volume function is actually a limit instead of a sup-limit, and we show how to compute the asymptotic polygon of a Hermitian line bundle, by using the arithmetic volume function.
For a hermitian line bundle over an arithmetic variety, we construct a convex continuous function on the Okounkov body associated to the generic fibre of the line bundle. The integration of the continuous function gives the growth of the Euler characteristic of the hermitian line bundle. It is the global version of the recent work of Nystrom.
We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.
Let $\mathcal X$ be a projective arithmetic variety of dimension at least $2$. If $\overline{\mathcal L}$ is an ample hermitian line bundle on $\mathcal X$, we prove that the proportion of those effective sections of $\overline{\mathcal L}^{\otimes n}$ that define an irreducible divisor on $\mathcal X$ tends to $1$ as $n$ tends to $\infty$. We prove variants of this statement for schemes mapping to such an $\mathcal X$. On the way to these results, we discuss some general properties of arithmetic ampleness, including restriction theorems, and upper bounds for the number of effective sections o…
We introduce the notion of $ε$-irreducibility for arithmetic cycles meaning that the degree of its analytic part is small compared to the degree of its irreducible classical part. We will show that for every $ε>0$ any sufficiently high tensor power of an arithmetically ample hermitian line bundle can be represented by an $ε$-irreducible arithmetic divisor. Our methods of proof also allow us to study the distribution of divisors of small sections of an arithmetically ample hermitian line bundle $\overline{\mathcal{L}}$. We will prove that for increasing tensor powers $\overline{\mathcal{L}}^{\o…
We introduce a new arithmetic invariant for hermitian line bundles on an arithmetic variety. We use this invariant to measure the variation of the volume function with respect to the metric. The main result of this paper is a generalized Hodge index theorem on arithmetic toric varieties.
In this paper, we prove effective upper bounds for effective sections of line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic varieties in terms of the volumes. They are effective versions of the Hilbert--Samuel formula and the arithmetic Hilbert--Samuel formula.
This paper is the sequel of the paper "Continuity of volumes on arithmetic varieties", in which we established the arithmetic volume function of smooth hermitian Q-invertible sheaves and proved its continuity. The continuity of the volume function has a lot of applications as treated in the paper as above. In this paper, we would like to consider its continuous extension over R.
A question of Griffiths-Schmid asks when the monodromy group of an algebraic family of complex varieties is arithmetic. We resolve this in the affirmative for the class of algebraic surfaces known as Atiyah-Kodaira manifolds, which have base and fibers equal to complete algebraic curves. Our methods are topological in nature and involve an analysis of the "geometric" monodromy, valued in the mapping class group of the fiber.
By using the $\mathbb R$-filtration approach of Arakelov geometry, one establishes explicit upper bounds for geometric and arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function for line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic projective varieties.
We study equivariant Arakelov-Euler characteristics of hermitian sheaves on arithmetic varieties which support a tame action by a finite group G. The tameness of the group action allows us to produce an equivariant Arakelov-Euler characteristic in a particularly fine "projective" arithmetic class group. We then show that the equivariant Arakelov-Euler characteristics of various complexes of differentials determine the epsilon constants of the L-functions of the motives obtained from the arithmetic variety using symplectic representations of the group G. Our results may be viewed firstly as a h…
Given a line bundle L on a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers, we show that a general extension E of L by the trivial line bundle is very stable: line bundles contained in E have degree much less than half the degree of E. From this result we deduce new inequalities for the successive minima of the euclidean lattice H^1(X,L^{-1}), where L is an hermitian line bundle on the arithmetic surface X.
In this paper, we reformulate conjectural formulas for the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties with minuscule parahoric level structure in terms of weighted counting of lattices containing special homomorphisms.
A rational group of hermitian type is an algebraic group over the rational numbers whose symmetric space is a hermitian symmetric space. We assume such a group $G$ to be given, which we assume is isotropic. Then, for any rational parabolic $P$ in the group $G$, we find a reductive rational subgroup $N$ closely related with $P$ by a relation we call incidence. This has implications to the geometry of arithmetic quotients of the symmetric space by arithmetic subgroups of $G$, in the sense that $N$ defines a subvariety on such an arithmetic quotient which has special behaviour at the cusp corresp…
The aim of this paper is twofold. First we prove a theorem of extension of sections of a coherent subquotient of a hermitian vector bundle on a complex analytic space with control of the norms, without any of the smoothness assumptions that were needed in previously known analogous results. Then we show how to associate an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function to a coherent sheaf on an arithmetic variety -- provided this coherent sheaf is a subquotient of a hermitian vector bundle -- and using the classical arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem and our extension theorem, we give the leading term of t…
Let f : X --> Spec(Z) be an arithmetic variety of dimension d >= 2 and (H, k) an arithmetically ample Hermitian line bundle on X. Let (E, h) be a rank r vector bundle on X. In this paper, we will prove that if E is semistable with respect to H on each connected component of the infinite fiber of X, then { c_2(E, h) - (r-1)/(2r) c_1(E, h)^2 } c_1(H, k)^{d-2} >= 0. Moreover, if the equality of the above inequality holds, then E is projectively flat and h is a weakly Einstein-Hermitian metric.
We prove lower bound and finiteness properties for arakelovian heights with respect to pre-log-log hermitian ample line bundles. These heights were introduced by Burgos, Kramer and Kühn, in their extension of the arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé, aimed to deal with hermitian vector bundles equipped with metrics admitting suitable logarithmic singularities. Our results generalize the corresponding properties for the heights of Bost-Gillet-Soulé, as well as the properties established by Faltings for heights of points attached to hermitian line bundles whose metrics have logarit…
We develop a theory of abstract arithmetic Chow rings where the role of the fibers at infinity is played by a complex of abelian groups that computes a suitable cohomology theory. This theory allows the construction of many variants of the arithmetic Chow groups with different properties. As particular cases of this formalism we recover the original arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé for projective varieties, we introduce a theory of arithmetic Chow groups which are covariant with respect to arbitrary proper morphisms, and we develop a theory of arithmetic Chow rings using a co…
We prove that any toroidal compactification of arithmetic quotient of Hermitian symmetric domain has no boundary branch divisor, in the setting where the algebraic group is of adjoint type.
Given an arithmetic surface and a positive hermitian line bundle over it, we bound the successive minima of the lattice of global sections of this line bundle. Our method combines a result of C.Voisin on secant varieties of projective curves with previous work by the author on the arithmetic analog of the Kodaira vanishing theorem. The paper also includes a result of A.Granville on the divisibility properties of binomial coefficients in a given line of Pascal's triangle.
We consider a short sequence of hermitian vector bundles on some arithmetic variety. Assuming that this sequence is exact on the generic fiber we prove that the alternated sum of the arithmetic Chern characters of these bundles is the sum of two terms, namely the secondary Bott Chern character class of the sequence and its Chern character with supports on the finite fibers. Next, we compute these classes in the situation encountered by the second author when proving a "Kodaira vanishing theorem" for arithmetic surfaces.
Let \E : 0 --> S --> E --> Q --> 0 be a short exact sequence of hermitian vector bundles with metrics on S and Q induced from that on E. We compute the Bott-Chern form of \E corresponding to any characteristic class, assuming E is projectively flat. The result is used to obtain a new presentation of the Arakelov Chow ring of the arithmetic grassmannian.
We introduce moduli spaces of abelian varieties which are arithmetic models of Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups of signature (n-1, 1). We define arithmetic cycles on these models and study their intersection behaviour. In particular, in the non-degenerate case, we prove a relation between their intersection numbers and Fourier coefficients of the derivative at s=0 of a certain incoherent Eisenstein series for the group U(n, n). This is done by relating the arithmetic cycles to their formal counterpart from Part I via non-archimedean uniformization, and by relating the Fourier coeff…
Arithmetic quotients are quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups, and modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients are themselves arithmetic quotients of lower dimension which live on arithmetic quotients, by an embedding induced from an inclusion of groups of hermitian type. We show the existence of such modular subvarieties, drawing on earlier work of the author. If $Γ$ is a fixed arithmetic subgroup, maximal in some sense, then we introduce the notion of ``$Γ$-integral symmetric'' subgroups, which in turn defines a notion of ``integral modular subvarieties'', and we show…
We compute the Bott-Chern classes of the metric Euler sequence describing the relative tangent bundle of the variety P(E) of hyperplans of a holomorphic hermitian vector bundle (E,h) on a complex manifold. We give applications to the construction of the arithmetic characteristic classes of an arithmetic vector bundle and to the computation of the height of P(E) with respect to the tautological quotient bundle O_E(1).
Atiyah and Bott used equivariant Morse theory applied to the Yang-Mills functional to calculate the Betti numbers of moduli spaces of vector bundles over a Riemann surface, rederiving inductive formulae obtained from an arithmetic approach which involved the Tamagawa number of SL_n. This article surveys this link between Yang-Mills theory and Tamagawa numbers, and explains how methods used over the last three decades to study the singular cohomology of moduli spaces of bundles on a smooth complex projective curve can be adapted to the setting of A^1-homotopy theory to study the motivic cohomol…
The $L^2$-cohomology of a locally symmetric variety is known to have the topological interpretation as the intersection homology of its Baily-Borel Satake compactification. In this article, we observe that even without the Hermitian hypothesis, the $L^p$-cohomology of an arithmetic quotient, for $p$ finite and sufficiently large, is isomorphic to the ordinary cohomology of its reductive Borel-Serre compactification. We use this to generalize a theorem of Mumford concerning homogeneous vector bundles, their invariant Chern forms and the canonical extensions of the bundles; here, though, we are …
Let F be the complete flag variety over Spec(Z) with the tautological filtration 0 \subset E_1 \subset E_2 \subset ... \subset E_n=E of the trivial bundle E over F. The trivial hermitian metric on E(\C) induces metrics on the quotient line bundles L_i(\C). Let \hat{c}_1(L_i) be the first Chern class of L_i in the arithmetic Chow ring \hat{CH}(F) and x_i = -\hat{c}_1(L_i). Let h(X_1,...,X_n) be a polynomial with integral coefficients in the ideal <e_1,...,e_n> generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials e_i. We give an effective algorithm for computing the arithmetic intersection h(x_1,..…
We consider heights of horizontal irreducible divisors on an arithmetic surface with respect to some hermitian line bundle. We obtain both lower and upper bounds for these heights. The results are different and sometimes stronger that those of S.Zhang on the same question. The case of the relative dualizing sheaf with the Arakelov metric is made especially explicit.
For $G$ a finite subgroup of ${\rm SL}(3,{\mathbb C})$ acting freely on ${\mathbb C}^3{\setminus} \{0\}$ a crepant resolution of the Calabi-Yau orbifold ${\mathbb C}^3\!/G$ always exists and has the geometry of an ALE non-compact manifold. We show that the tautological bundles on these crepant resolutions admit rigid Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections. For this we use analytical information extracted from the derived category McKay correspondence of Bridgeland, King, and Reid [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 14 (2001), 535-554]. As a consequence we rederive multiplicative cohomological identities on the cre…
We compute the fundamental group of a toroidal compactification of a Hermitian locally symmetric space $D/Γ$, without assuming either that $Γ$is neat or that it is arithmetic. We also give bounds for the first Betti number.
