We develop a theory of arithmetic characteristic classes of (fully decomposed) automorphic vector bundles equipped with an invariant hermitian metric. These characteristic classes have values in an arithmetic Chow ring constructed by means of differential forms with certain log-log type singularities. We first study the cohomological properties of log-log differential forms, prove a Poincaré lemma for them and construct the corresponding arithmetic Chow groups. Then we introduce the notion of log-singular hermitian vector bundles, which is a variant of the good hermitian vector bundles introduced by Mumford, and we develop the theory of arithmetic characteristic classes. Finally we prove that the hermitian metrics of automorphic vector bundles considered by Mumford are not only good but also log-singular. The theory presented here provides the theoretical background which is required in the formulation of the conjectures of Maillot-Roessler in the semi-abelian case and which is needed to extend Kudla's program about arithmetic intersections on Shimura varieties to the non compact case.
We prove that Chern classes in continuous $\ell$-adic cohomology of automorphic bundles associated to representations of $G$ on a projective Shimura variety with data $(G,X)$ are trivial rationally. It is a consequence of Beilinson's conjectures which predict that the Chern classes in the Chow groups vanish rationally.
We define and construct integral canonical models for automorphic vector bundles over Shimura varieties of abelian type. More precisely, we first build on Kisin's work to construct integral canonical models over rings of integers of number fields with finitely many primes inverted for Shimura varieties of abelian type with hyperspecial level at all primes we do not invert, compatible with Kisin's construction. We then define a notion of an integral canonical model for the standard principal bundles lying over Shimura varieties and proceed to construct them in the abelian type case. With these …
We show that the multiple divisor functions of integers in invertible residue classes modulo a prime number, as well as the Fourier coefficients of GL(N) Maass cusp forms for all N larger than 2, satisfy a central limit theorem in a suitable range, generalizing the case N=2 treated by E. Fouvry, S. Ganguly, E. Kowalski and P. Michel. Such universal Gaussian behaviour relies on a deep equidistribution result of products of hyper-Kloosterman sums.
For a connected reductive group $G$ over a finite field, we study automorphic vector bundles on the stack of $G$-zips. In particular, we give a formula in the general case for the space of global sections of an automorphic vector bundle in terms of the Brylinski--Kostant filtration. Moreover, we give an equivalence of categories between the category of automorphic vector bundles on the stack of $G$-zips and a category of admissible modules with actions of a zero-dimensional algebraic subgroup a Levi subgroup and monodromy operators.
In the present paper we find explicit formulas for the degrees of Heegner divisors on arithmetic quotients of the orthogonal group $\Orth(2,p)$ and for the integrals of certain automorphic Green's functions associated with Heegner divisors. The latter quantities are important in the study of the arithmetic degrees of Heegner divisors in the context of Arakelov geometry. In particular, we obtain a different proof and a generalization of results of Kudla relating these quantities to the Fourier coefficients of certain non-holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $1+p/2$ for the metaplectic group …
We investigate modular embeddings for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. First we prove some purely algebro-geometric or even topological criteria for a regular map from a smooth complex curve to a quaternionic Shimura variety to be covered by a modular embedding. Then we set up an adelic formalism for modular embeddings and apply our criteria to study the effect of abstract field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ on modular embeddings. Finally we derive that the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ operates on the dessins d'enfants defined by principal congruence subgroups of (arithmetic or non-ar…
This paper is the written version of D.Kazhdan's plenary talk at ICM 2022. It is dedicated to an exposition of recent results and (mostly) conjectures attempting to construct an analog of the theory of automorphic functions on moduli spaces of bundles on curves over local fields (both archimedian and non-archimedian). The talk is based on joint works of D.Kazhdan with A.Braverman, P.Etingof, E.Frenkel and A.Polishchuk.
We axiomatize the algebraic properties of toroidal compactifications of (mixed) Shimura varieties and their automorphic vector bundles. A notion of generalized automorphic sheaf is proposed which includes sheaves of (meromorphic) sections of automorphic vector bundles with prescribed vanishing and pole orders along strata in the compactification, and their quotients. These include, for instance, sheaves of Jacobi forms and weakly holomorphic modular forms. Using this machinery we give a short and purely algebraic proof of the proportionality theorem of Hirzebruch and Mumford.
Given an automorphic line bundle ${\mathcal O}_X(k)$ of weight $k$ on the Drinfel'd upper half plane $X$ over a local field $K$, we construct a ${\rm GL}_2(K)$-equivariant integral lattice ${\mathcal O}_{\widehat{\mathfrak X}}(k)$ in ${\mathcal O}_X(k)\otimes_K\widehat{K}$, as a coherent sheaf on the formal model $\widehat{\mathfrak{X}}$ underlying $X\otimes_K\widehat{K}$. Here $\widehat{K}/K$ is ramified of degree $2$. This generalizes a construction of Teitelbaum from the case of even weight $k$ to arbitrary integer weight $k$. We compute $H^*(\widetilde{\mathfrak{X}},{\mathcal O}_{\widehat{…
We show an arithmetic generalization of the recent work of Lazarsfeld-Mustata which uses Okounkov bodies to study linear series of line bundles. As applications, we derive a log-concavity inequality on volumes of arithmetic line bundles and an arithmetic Fujita approximation theorem for big line bundles.
For a hermitian line bundle over an arithmetic variety, we construct a convex continuous function on the Okounkov body associated to the generic fibre of the line bundle. The integration of the continuous function gives the growth of the Euler characteristic of the hermitian line bundle. It is the global version of the recent work of Nystrom.
We define and study the subspace of cuspidal functions for $G$-bundles on a class of nilpotent extensions $C$ of curves over a finite field. We show that this subspace is preserved by the action of a certain noncommutative Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_{G,C}$. In the case $G=\rm{GL}_2$, we construct a commutative subalgebra in $\mathcal{H}_{G,C}$ of Hecke operators associated with simple divisors. In the case of length 2 extensions and of $G=\rm{GL}_2$, we prove that the space of cuspidal functions (for bundles with a fixed determinant) is finite-dimensional and provide bounds on its dimension. I…
The elliptic genus (EG) of a compact complex manifold was introduced as a holomorphic Euler characteristic of some formal power series with vector bundle coefficients. EG is an automorphic form in two variables only if the manifold is a Calabi--Yau manifold. In physics such a function appears as the partition function of N=2 superconformal field theories. In these notes we define the modified Witten genus or the automorphic correction of elliptic genus. It is an automorphic function in two variables for an arbitrary holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold. This paper is an ex…
We prove a Hilbert-Samuel type result of arithmetic big line bundles in Arakelov geometry, which is an analogue of a classical theorem of Siu. An application of this result gives equidistribution of small points over algebraic dynamical systems, following the work of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang. We also generalize Chambert-Loir's non-archimedean equidistribution.
Using our results about Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras and arithmetic mirror symmetry, we give six series of examples of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces with automorphic discriminant.
We study arithmetic of the algebraic varieties defined over number fields by applying Lagrange interpolation to fibrations. Assuming the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of a certain elliptic curve, we show, for Châtelet surface bundles over curves, that the violation of Hasse principle being accounted for by the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not invariant under an arbitrary finite extension of the ground field.
In a previous paper, we have defined arithmetic extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. In the present one, we introduce an arithmetic analogue of the Atiyah extension that defines an element -- the arithmetic Atiyah class -- in a suitable arithmetic extension group. If $\overline{E}$ is a hermitian vector bundle on an arithmetic scheme $X$, its arithmetic Atiyah class is an obstruction to the algebraicity of the unitary connection on the vector bundle $E_\C$ over the complex manifold $X(\C)$ that is compatible with its holomorphic structure. We develop basic properties of the ar…
We define and investigate extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. The 'arithmetic extension groups' we introduce are extensions by groups of analytic types of the usual extension groups attached to $Ø_X$-modules over an arithmetic scheme $X$. In this paper, we focus on the first arithmetic extension group - the elements of which may be described in terms of admissible short exact sequences of hermitian vector bundles over $X$ - and we especially consider the case when $X$ is an 'arithmetic curve', namely the spectrum $\Spec Ø_K$ of the ring of integers in some number field $K$. T…
Given a line bundle L on a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers, we show that a general extension E of L by the trivial line bundle is very stable: line bundles contained in E have degree much less than half the degree of E. From this result we deduce new inequalities for the successive minima of the euclidean lattice H^1(X,L^{-1}), where L is an hermitian line bundle on the arithmetic surface X.
Let $S$ be a closed Shimura variety uniformized by the complex $n$-ball. The Hodge conjecture predicts that every Hodge class in $H^{2k} (S, \Q)$, $k=0, \ldots, n$, is algebraic. We show that this holds for all degree $k$ away from the neighborhood $]n/3, 2n/3[$ of the middle degree. We also address the Tate conjecture and the generalized form of the Hodge conjecture and extend most of our results to Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups of any signature. The proofs make use of the recent endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of classical groups by \cite{ArthurBook,…
In this paper, we prove effective upper bounds for effective sections of line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic varieties in terms of the volumes. They are effective versions of the Hilbert--Samuel formula and the arithmetic Hilbert--Samuel formula.
On the projective plane there is a unique cubic root of the canonical bundle and this root is acyclic. On fake projective planes such root exists and is unique if there are no 3-torsion divisors (and usually exists, but not unique, otherwise). Earlier we conjectured that any such cubic root must be acyclic. In the present note we give two short proofs of this statement and show acyclicity of some other line bundles on the fake projective planes with at least $9$ automorphisms. Similarly to our earlier work we employ simple representation theory for non-abelian finite groups. The first proof is…
We establish, for a generically big Hermitian line bundle, the convergence of truncated Harder-Narasimhan polygons and the uniform continuity of the limit. As applications, we prove a conjecture of Moriwaki asserting that the arithmetic volume function is actually a limit instead of a sup-limit, and we show how to compute the asymptotic polygon of a Hermitian line bundle, by using the arithmetic volume function.
We introduce the notion of $ε$-irreducibility for arithmetic cycles meaning that the degree of its analytic part is small compared to the degree of its irreducible classical part. We will show that for every $ε>0$ any sufficiently high tensor power of an arithmetically ample hermitian line bundle can be represented by an $ε$-irreducible arithmetic divisor. Our methods of proof also allow us to study the distribution of divisors of small sections of an arithmetically ample hermitian line bundle $\overline{\mathcal{L}}$. We will prove that for increasing tensor powers $\overline{\mathcal{L}}^{\o…
We prove that any rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on a general hypersurface of degree at least three in $\mathbb{P}^5$ must be split.
We study the hyperbolicity of compactifications of quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups. We prove that, up to an étale cover, they are Kobayashi hyperbolic modulo the boundary. Applying our techniques to Siegel modular varieties, we improve some former results of Nadel on the non-existence of certain level structures on abelian varieties over complex function fields.
We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.
We prove that any rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on a general hypersurface of degree at least six in projective four space must be split.
We give a close formula for the Néron-Tate height of tautological integral cycles on Jacobians of curves over number fields as well as a new lower bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number $\hatω^2$ of the dualizing sheaf of a curve in terms of Zhang's invariant $φ$. As an application, we obtain an effective Bogomolov-type result for the tautological cycles. We deduce these results from a more general combinatorial computation of arithmetic intersection numbers of adelic line bundles on higher self-products of curves, which are linear combinations of pullbacks of line bundles on the cu…
Let $\mathcal X$ be a projective arithmetic variety of dimension at least $2$. If $\overline{\mathcal L}$ is an ample hermitian line bundle on $\mathcal X$, we prove that the proportion of those effective sections of $\overline{\mathcal L}^{\otimes n}$ that define an irreducible divisor on $\mathcal X$ tends to $1$ as $n$ tends to $\infty$. We prove variants of this statement for schemes mapping to such an $\mathcal X$. On the way to these results, we discuss some general properties of arithmetic ampleness, including restriction theorems, and upper bounds for the number of effective sections o…
In this note, we investigate the Chern classes of flat bundles in the arithmetic Deligne Cohomology, introduced by Green-Griffiths, Asakura-Saito. We show nontriviality of the Chern classes in some cases and the proof also indicates that generic flat bundles (in its moduli space) can be expected to have nontrivial classes, which is in contrast with some Gauss-Manin systems.
Stability plays a central role in arithmetic. In this article, we explain some basic ideas and present certain constructions for such studies. There are two aspects: namely, general Class Field Theories for Riemann surfaces using semi-stable parabolic bundles & for p-adic number fields using what we call semi-stable filtered (phi,N;omega)-modules; and non-abelian zeta functions for function fields over finite fields using semi-stable bundles & for number fields using semi-stable lattices.
For line bundles on arithmetic varieties we construct height functions using arithmetic intersection theory. In the case of an arithmetic surface, generically of genus g, for line bundles of degree g equivalence is shown to the height on the Jacobian defined by the Theta divisor.
We describe recent work on the arithmetic properties of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles and stable parabolic bundles on a curve over a global field. In particular, we describe a connection between the period-index problem for Brauer classes over the function field of the curve and the Hasse principle for rational points on etale forms of such moduli spaces, refining classical results of Artin and Tate. Submitted to proceedings of a Clay workshop on vector bundles on curves in honor of Newstead.
We introduce the notions of deformation Higgs bundle and Riemann-Finsler metric on the moduli space of polarized varieties. We also use the Higgs-de Rham flow in the p-adic setting. These are the key novelties in our program.
By using the $\mathbb R$-filtration approach of Arakelov geometry, one establishes explicit upper bounds for geometric and arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function for line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic projective varieties.
We introduce a new arithmetic invariant for hermitian line bundles on an arithmetic variety. We use this invariant to measure the variation of the volume function with respect to the metric. The main result of this paper is a generalized Hodge index theorem on arithmetic toric varieties.
We analyze the deformation theory of equivariant vector bundles. In particular, we provide an effective criterion for verifying whether all infinitesimal deformations preserve the equivariant structure. As an application, using rigidity of the Frobenius homomorphism of general linear groups, we prove that projectivizations of Frobenius pullbacks of tautological vector bundles on Grassmanians are arithmetically rigid, that is, do not lift over rings where $p \neq 0$. This gives the same conclusion for Totaro's examples of Fano varieties violating Kodaira vanishing. We also provide an alternativ…
On a given arithmetic surface, inspired by work of Miyaoka, we consider vector bundles which are extensions of a line bundle by another one. We give sufficient conditions for their restriction to the generic fiber to be semi-stable. We then apply the arithmetic analog of Bogomolov inequality in Arakelov theory, and deduce from it a lower bound for some successive minima in the lattice of extension classes between these line bundles.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface. In this note we show that any rank 3 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle over $X$ splits when dim $X \geq 7$. We also find a splitting criterion for rank 4 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundles on $X$ when dim $X \geq 9$.
We study locally free sheaves of rank two on the projective line over the integers, especially indecomposable ones. Subsequently we apply various concepts of Arakelov geometry to these sheaves. We compute for example the arithmetic Chern classes and use the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem.
We consider a short sequence of hermitian vector bundles on some arithmetic variety. Assuming that this sequence is exact on the generic fiber we prove that the alternated sum of the arithmetic Chern characters of these bundles is the sum of two terms, namely the secondary Bott Chern character class of the sequence and its Chern character with supports on the finite fibers. Next, we compute these classes in the situation encountered by the second author when proving a "Kodaira vanishing theorem" for arithmetic surfaces.
Here we consider the set of bundles $\{V_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ associated to the plane trinomial curves $k[x,y,z]/(h)$. We prove that the Frobenius semistability behaviour of the reduction mod $p$ of $V_n$ is a function of the congruence class of $p$ modulo $2λ_h$ (an integer invariant associated to $h$). As one of the consequences of this, we prove that if $V_n$ is semistable in characteristic 0, then its reduction mod $p$ is strongly semistable, for $p$ in a Zariski dense set of primes. Moreover, for any given finitely many such semistable bundles $V_n$, there is a common Zariski dense set of such …
We extend our variant of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces \cite{GN3} and clarify its relation with mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds. We introduce two classes (for the models A and B) of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibrated by K3 surfaces with some special Picard lattices. These two classes are related with automorphic forms on IV type domains which we studied in our papers \cite{GN1}-\cite{GN6}. Conjecturally these automorphic forms take part in the quantum intersection pairing for model A, Yukawa coupling for model B and mirror symmetry between these two classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Recen…
