We prove that any rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on a general hypersurface of degree at least three in $\mathbb{P}^5$ must be split.
We prove that any rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on a general hypersurface of degree at least six in projective four space must be split.
We give examples of infinitely extendable (not as cones) arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces and which are not complete intersections. The proof uses the computation of the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of codimension $2$ subschemes of projective spaces due to G. Ellingsrud and of arithmetically Gorenstein codimension $3$ subschemes due to J. O. Kleppe and R.-M. Miró-Roig.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface of dimension $\geq 5$ and let $E$ be an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundle on $X$ of any rank. We prove that $E$ splits as a direct sum of line bundles if and only if $H^i_*(X, \wedge^2 E) = 0$ for $i = 1,2,3,4$. As a corollary this result proves a conjecture of Buchweitz, Greuel and Schreyer for the case of rank 3 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles.
We characterize the minimal free resolution of zero-dimensional subschemes in the plane with non connected character. This is then used to slightly generalize a result of Sauer about the smoothability of a.C.M. space curves. Some complements are also given.
Recently it has been proved that any arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundle of rank two on a general, smooth hypersurface of degree at least three and dimension at least four is a sum of line bundles. When the dimension of the hypersurface is three, a similar result is true provided the degree of the hypersurface is at least six. We extend these results to complete intersection subvarieties by proving that any ACM bundle of rank two on a general, smooth complete intersection subvariety of sufficiently high multi-degree and dimension at least four splits. We also obtain partial results in t…
In this paper, we study arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay (ACM) bundles on homogeneous varieties $G/P$. Indeed we characterize the homogeneous ACM bundles on $G/P$ of Picard rank one in terms of highest weights. This is a generalization of the result on $G/P$ of classical types presented by Costa and Miró-Roig for type $A$, and Du, Fang, and Ren for types $B,C$ and $D$. As a consequence we prove that only finitely many irreducible homogeneous ACM bundles, up to twisting line bundles, exist over all such $G/P$. Moreover, we derive the list of the highest weights of the irreducible homogeneous ACM …
Addressing a question of M. Stillman, it had been shown by Ein, Eisenbud, and the author that in a projective space of dimension at most 5, every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve which is cut out by quadrics scheme- theoretically also has its homogeneous ideal generated by quadrics. In this note it is shown that this is not the case in higher dimensional spaces.
We show that the arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay (ACM) curves of degree 4 and genus 0 in ${\bold P}^4$ form an irreducible subset of the Hilbert scheme. Using this, we show that the singular locus of the corresponding component of the Hilbert scheme has dimension greater than 6. Moreover, we describe the structures of all ACM curves of Hilb$^{4m+1}({\bold P}^4)$.
A rational map whose source and image are projectively embedded varieties has an {\em Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay graph} if the Rees algebra of one (hence any) of its base ideals is a Cohen-Macaulay ring. If the map is birational onto the image one considers how this property forces an upper bound on the degree of a representative of the map. In the plane case a complete description is given of the Cremona maps with Cohen-Macaulay graph, while in arbitrary dimension $n$ it is shown that a Cremona map with Cohen-Macaulay graph has degree at most $n^2$.
When present, the Cohen-Macaulay property can be useful for finding the minimal defining equations of an algebraic variety. It is conjectured that all secant varieties of Segre products of projective spaces are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. A summary of the known cases where the conjecture is true is given. An inductive procedure based on the work of Landsberg and Weyman (LW-lifting) is described and used to obtain resolutions of orbits of secant varieties from those of smaller secant varieties. A new computation of the minimal free resolution of the variety of border rank 4 tensors of format…
Rank 2 indecomposable arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles E on a nonsingular cubic surface X in P^3 are classified, by means of the possible forms taken by the minimal graded free resolution of E over P^3. The admissible values of the Chern classes of E are listed and the vanishing locus of a general section of E is studied. Properties of E such as (semi) stability and simplicity are investigated; the number of relevant families is computed together with their dimension.
In this paper, we discuss some necessary and sufficient condition for a curve to be arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, in terms of its general hyperplane section. We obtain a characterization of the degree matrices that can occur for points in the plane that are the general hyperplane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P^3. We prove that almost all the degree matrices with positive subdiagonal that occur for the general plane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P^3, arise also as degree matrices of the general plane section of some smooth, integral, non ari…
We investigate Borel ideals on the Hilbert scheme components of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) codimension two schemes in P^n. We give a basic necessary criterion for a Borel ideal to be on such a component. Then considering ACM curves in P^3 on a quadric we compute in several examples all the Borel ideals on their Hilbert scheme component. Based on this we conjecture which Borel ideals are on such a component, and for a range of Borel ideals we prove that they are on the component.
In this paper we study the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for sets of points in multiprojective spaces. Most of what is known is for $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ and, more recently, in $(\mathbb P^1)^r.$ In $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ the so called inclusion property characterizes the ACM property. We extend the definition in any multiprojective space and we prove that the inclusion property implies the ACM property in $\mathbb P^m\times \mathbb P^n$. In such an ambient space it is equivalent to the so-called $(\star)$-property. Moreover, we start an investigation of the A…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface. In this note we show that any rank 3 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle over $X$ splits when dim $X \geq 7$. We also find a splitting criterion for rank 4 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundles on $X$ when dim $X \geq 9$.
We describe some recent work concerning Gorenstein liaison of codimension two subschemes of a projective variety. Applications make use of the algebraic theory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, which we review in an Appendix.
Using Altmann-Hausen-Suss description of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties via divisorial fans and Kóvacs-Schwede-Smith characterization of Du Bois singularities, we study Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois $\mathbb{T}$-singularities of complexity one. We exhibit cohomological criteria for a $\mathbb{T}$-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay and Du Bois in terms of polyhedral divisors. We give an example of a Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularity of complexity one which does not have rational singularities.
The purpose of this note is to show that in characteristic two there exists a smooth Fano variety for which the square of the anti-canonical bundle violates Kodaira vanishing. This is used in turn to construct non-Cohen-Macaulay canonical singularities in characteristic two.
We define very proper intersections of modules and projective subschemes. It turns out that equidimensional locally Cohen-Macaulay modules intersect very properly if and only if they intersect properly. We prove a Bezout theorem for modules which meet very properly. Furthermore, we show for equidimensional subschemes $X$ and $Y$: If they intersect properly in an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of positive dimension then $X$ and $Y$ are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. The module version of this result implies splitting criteria for reflexive sheaves.
In this paper the author provides a generalization of classical linkage, i.e. linkage by a complete intersection of dim. 0 or 1 on arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay schemes of any dimension. Namely she looks at residuals in the scheme theoretic intersection of an aCM scheme of dim. r (resp. r+1) with r hypersurfaces of degree a_1,...,a_r. When the aCM scheme is singular a complete intersection on it may not be Gorenstein, in this case classical linkage, even if suitably generalized, does not apply. The main purpose of this paper is to prove some results related to the invariance of the deficiency …
This paper addresses problems related to the existence of arithmetic Macaulayfications of projective schemes. Let Y be the blow-up of a projective scheme X = Proj R along the ideal sheaf of I \subset R. It is known that there are embeddings Y \cong Proj k[(I^e)_c] for c \ge d(I)e + 1, where d(I) denotes the maximal generating degree of I, and that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ring of the form k[(I^e)_c] if and only if H^0(Y,O_Y) = k, H^i(Y,O_Y) = 0 for i = 1,...,dim Y-1, Y is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. Cutkosky and Herzog asked when there is a linear bound on c and e ensuring that k[…
We study the Tate resolutions and the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Cohen-Macaulay modules over Gorenstein rings. One consequence is an extension of a well-known result about linkage of complete intersections.
The paper answers a question by Jonathan Wahl, giving examples of regular surfaces S (so their canonical ring is a Gorenstein graded ring) having the following properties: 1) their canonical divisor K_S = rL is a positive multiple of an ample divisor L 2) the graded ring R := R (X,L ) associated to L is not Cohen-Macaulay. In the appendix Wahl shows how these examples lead to the existence of Cohen-Macaulay singularities with K_X Q -Cartier which are not Q -Gorenstein, since their index one cover is not Cohen- Macaulay.
We generalize the results of Kahn about a correspondence between Cohen-Macaulay modules and vector bundles to non-commutative surface singularities. As an application, we give examples of non-commutative surface singularities which are not Cohen-Macaulay finite, but are Cohen-Macaulay tame.
We give suffcient conditions for a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring, or equivalently, an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay projective variety, to be Cohen-Macaulay wild in the sense of representation theory. In particular, these conditions are applied to hypersurfaces and complete intersections.
We study properties of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over an N-graded locally finite, Auslander Gorenstein, and Cohen-Macaulay algebra of dimension two. As a consequence, we extend a part of McKay correspondence in dimension two to a more general setting.
In this paper we study the finitely generated bigraded modules over a standard bigraded polynomial ring which are relative Cohen-Macaulay or relative unmixed with respect to one of the irrelevant bigraded ideals. A generalization of Reisner's criterion for Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes is considered.
By finding a p-adic obstruction, we construct many examples of positive characteristic complete noetherian local rings which do not admit any module-finite Cohen-Macaulay extension. These examples should be contrasted with a result of Hochster-Huneke: the union of all finite extensions is always Cohen-Macaulay.
Let S be a standard N^r-graded algebra over a local ring A, and let M be a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. We characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of M in terms of the vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology modules. As a consequence, we apply our result to study the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees modules (also called Rees modification). Our work extends previous studies on the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees algebras.
This is a survey article about properties of Cohen-Macaulay modules over surface singularities. We discuss various results on the Macaulayfication functor, reflexive modules over simple, quotient and minimally elliptic singularities, geometric and algebraic McKay Correspondence. Finally, we describe matrix factorizations corresponding to the indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules over the non-isolated singularities $A_\infty$ and $D_\infty$.
We prove a Cohen-Macaulay version of a result by Avramov-Golod and Frankild-Jørgensen about Gorenstein rings, showing that if a noetherian ring $A$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $a_1,\dots,a_n$ is any sequence of elements in $A$, then the Koszul complex $K(A;a_1,\dots,a_n)$ is a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring. We further generalize this result, showing that it also holds for commutative DG-rings. In the process of proving this, we develop a new technique to study the dimension theory of a noetherian ring $A$, by finding a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring $B$ such that $\mathrm{H}^0(B) = A$, and using the Cohen-Macaula…
We show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem can fail on smooth Fano varieties of any characteristic p > 0. Taking cones over some of these varieties, we give the first examples of terminal singularities which are not Cohen-Macaulay. By a different method, we construct a terminal singularity of dimension 3 (the lowest possible) in characteristic 2 which is not Cohen-Macaulay.
Via the BGG correspondence a simplicial complex Delta on [n] is transformed into a complex of coherent sheaves on P^n-1. We show that this complex reduces to a coherent sheaf F exactly when the Alexander dual Delta^* is Cohen-Macaulay. We then determine when both Delta and Delta^* are Cohen-Macaulay. This corresponds to F being a locally Cohen-Macaulay sheaf. Lastly we conjecture for which range of invariants of such Delta it must be a cone.
A concrete description of all graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of rank one and two over the affine cone of the simple node (a non-isolated singularity) is given. For this purpose we construct an alghoritm that provides extensions of MCM modules over an arbitrary hypersurface.
In this article, we provide a complete list of simple Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 singularities together with a list of adjacencies which is complete in the case of fat point and space curve singularities.
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay normal domain. A non commutative crepant resolution (NCCR) of $A$ is an $A$-algebra $Γ$ of the form $Γ= End_A(M)$, where $M$ is a reflexive $A$-module, $Γ$ is maximal Cohen-Macaulay as an $A$-module and $gldim(Γ)_P = \dim A_P $ for all primes $P$ of $A$. We give bountiful examples of equi-characteristic Cohen-Macaulay normal local domains and mixed characteristic Cohen-Macaulay normal local domains having NCCR. We also give plentiful examples of affine Cohen-Macaulay normal domains having NCCR.
In this article, we study Cohen-Macaulay modules over non-reduced curve singularities. We prove that the rings $k[[x,y,z]]/(xy, y^q -z^2)$ have tame Cohen-Macaulay representation type. For the singularity $k[[x,y,z]]/(xy, z^2)$ we give an explicit description of all indecomposable Cohen--Macaulay modules and apply the obtained classification to construct explicit families of indecomposable matrix factorizations of $(xy)^2 \in k[[x,y]]$.
A description of Cohen-Macaulay modules over cusp surface singularities and over unimodule hypersurface singularities of type T is given. It is proved that among minimally elliptic singularities and their quotients only simple elliptic and cusps are tame, all others are wild (with respect to the classification of Cohen-Macaulay modules).
By extending some basic results of Grothendieck and Foxby about local cohomology to commutative DG-rings, we prove new amplitude inequalities about finite DG-modules of finite injective dimension over commutative local DG-rings, complementing results of Jørgensen and resolving a recent conjecture of Minamoto. When these inequalities are equalities, we arrive to the notion of a local-Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring. We make a detailed study of this notion, showing that much of the classical theory of Cohen-Macaulay rings and modules can be generalized to the derived setting, and that there are many natu…
This is a survey on recent developments in Cohen-Macaulay representations via tilting and cluster tilting theory. We explain triangle equivalences between the singularity categories of Gorenstein rings and the derived (or cluster) categories of finite dimensional algebras.
