Rank 2 indecomposable arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles E on a nonsingular cubic surface X in P^3 are classified, by means of the possible forms taken by the minimal graded free resolution of E over P^3.
The admissible values of the Chern classes of E are listed and the vanishing locus of a general section of E is studied.
Properties of E such as (semi) stability and simplicity are investigated; the number of relevant families is computed together with their dimension.
A rational map whose source and image are projectively embedded varieties has an {\em Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay graph} if the Rees algebra of one (hence any) of its base ideals is a Cohen-Macaulay ring. If the map is birational onto the image one considers how this property forces an upper bound on the degree of a representative of the map. In the plane case a complete description is given of the Cremona maps with Cohen-Macaulay graph, while in arbitrary dimension $n$ it is shown that a Cremona map with Cohen-Macaulay graph has degree at most $n^2$.
When present, the Cohen-Macaulay property can be useful for finding the minimal defining equations of an algebraic variety. It is conjectured that all secant varieties of Segre products of projective spaces are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. A summary of the known cases where the conjecture is true is given. An inductive procedure based on the work of Landsberg and Weyman (LW-lifting) is described and used to obtain resolutions of orbits of secant varieties from those of smaller secant varieties. A new computation of the minimal free resolution of the variety of border rank 4 tensors of format…
In this paper, we discuss some necessary and sufficient condition for a curve to be arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, in terms of its general hyperplane section. We obtain a characterization of the degree matrices that can occur for points in the plane that are the general hyperplane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P^3. We prove that almost all the degree matrices with positive subdiagonal that occur for the general plane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P^3, arise also as degree matrices of the general plane section of some smooth, integral, non ari…
We investigate Borel ideals on the Hilbert scheme components of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) codimension two schemes in P^n. We give a basic necessary criterion for a Borel ideal to be on such a component. Then considering ACM curves in P^3 on a quadric we compute in several examples all the Borel ideals on their Hilbert scheme component. Based on this we conjecture which Borel ideals are on such a component, and for a range of Borel ideals we prove that they are on the component.
We prove that any rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on a general hypersurface of degree at least three in $\mathbb{P}^5$ must be split.
We prove that any rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on a general hypersurface of degree at least six in projective four space must be split.
In this paper we study the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for sets of points in multiprojective spaces. Most of what is known is for $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ and, more recently, in $(\mathbb P^1)^r.$ In $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ the so called inclusion property characterizes the ACM property. We extend the definition in any multiprojective space and we prove that the inclusion property implies the ACM property in $\mathbb P^m\times \mathbb P^n$. In such an ambient space it is equivalent to the so-called $(\star)$-property. Moreover, we start an investigation of the A…
We give examples of infinitely extendable (not as cones) arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces and which are not complete intersections. The proof uses the computation of the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of codimension $2$ subschemes of projective spaces due to G. Ellingsrud and of arithmetically Gorenstein codimension $3$ subschemes due to J. O. Kleppe and R.-M. Miró-Roig.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface of dimension $\geq 5$ and let $E$ be an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundle on $X$ of any rank. We prove that $E$ splits as a direct sum of line bundles if and only if $H^i_*(X, \wedge^2 E) = 0$ for $i = 1,2,3,4$. As a corollary this result proves a conjecture of Buchweitz, Greuel and Schreyer for the case of rank 3 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles.
We characterize the minimal free resolution of zero-dimensional subschemes in the plane with non connected character. This is then used to slightly generalize a result of Sauer about the smoothability of a.C.M. space curves. Some complements are also given.
We define very proper intersections of modules and projective subschemes. It turns out that equidimensional locally Cohen-Macaulay modules intersect very properly if and only if they intersect properly. We prove a Bezout theorem for modules which meet very properly. Furthermore, we show for equidimensional subschemes $X$ and $Y$: If they intersect properly in an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of positive dimension then $X$ and $Y$ are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. The module version of this result implies splitting criteria for reflexive sheaves.
In this paper the author provides a generalization of classical linkage, i.e. linkage by a complete intersection of dim. 0 or 1 on arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay schemes of any dimension. Namely she looks at residuals in the scheme theoretic intersection of an aCM scheme of dim. r (resp. r+1) with r hypersurfaces of degree a_1,...,a_r. When the aCM scheme is singular a complete intersection on it may not be Gorenstein, in this case classical linkage, even if suitably generalized, does not apply. The main purpose of this paper is to prove some results related to the invariance of the deficiency …
Addressing a question of M. Stillman, it had been shown by Ein, Eisenbud, and the author that in a projective space of dimension at most 5, every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve which is cut out by quadrics scheme- theoretically also has its homogeneous ideal generated by quadrics. In this note it is shown that this is not the case in higher dimensional spaces.
We show that the arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay (ACM) curves of degree 4 and genus 0 in ${\bold P}^4$ form an irreducible subset of the Hilbert scheme. Using this, we show that the singular locus of the corresponding component of the Hilbert scheme has dimension greater than 6. Moreover, we describe the structures of all ACM curves of Hilb$^{4m+1}({\bold P}^4)$.
This paper addresses problems related to the existence of arithmetic Macaulayfications of projective schemes. Let Y be the blow-up of a projective scheme X = Proj R along the ideal sheaf of I \subset R. It is known that there are embeddings Y \cong Proj k[(I^e)_c] for c \ge d(I)e + 1, where d(I) denotes the maximal generating degree of I, and that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ring of the form k[(I^e)_c] if and only if H^0(Y,O_Y) = k, H^i(Y,O_Y) = 0 for i = 1,...,dim Y-1, Y is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. Cutkosky and Herzog asked when there is a linear bound on c and e ensuring that k[…
Recently it has been proved that any arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundle of rank two on a general, smooth hypersurface of degree at least three and dimension at least four is a sum of line bundles. When the dimension of the hypersurface is three, a similar result is true provided the degree of the hypersurface is at least six. We extend these results to complete intersection subvarieties by proving that any ACM bundle of rank two on a general, smooth complete intersection subvariety of sufficiently high multi-degree and dimension at least four splits. We also obtain partial results in t…
In this paper, we study arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay (ACM) bundles on homogeneous varieties $G/P$. Indeed we characterize the homogeneous ACM bundles on $G/P$ of Picard rank one in terms of highest weights. This is a generalization of the result on $G/P$ of classical types presented by Costa and Miró-Roig for type $A$, and Du, Fang, and Ren for types $B,C$ and $D$. As a consequence we prove that only finitely many irreducible homogeneous ACM bundles, up to twisting line bundles, exist over all such $G/P$. Moreover, we derive the list of the highest weights of the irreducible homogeneous ACM …
Polarized varieties without arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles and section rings without graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules in characteristic zero

We give suffcient conditions for a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring, or equivalently, an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay projective variety, to be Cohen-Macaulay wild in the sense of representation theory. In particular, these conditions are applied to hypersurfaces and complete intersections.
In this note we address the problem of determining the maximum number of points of intersection of two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curves in $\PP^3$. We give a sharp upper bound for the maximum number of points of intersection of two irreducible arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curves $C_t$ and $C_{t-r}$ in $\PP^3$ defined by the maximal minors of a $t \times (t+1)$, resp. $(t-r) \times (t-r+1)$, matrix with linear entries, provided $C_{t-r}$ has no linear series of degree $d\leq{{t-r+1}\choose 3}$ and dimension $n\geq t-r$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface. In this note we show that any rank 3 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle over $X$ splits when dim $X \geq 7$. We also find a splitting criterion for rank 4 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundles on $X$ when dim $X \geq 9$.
We show that a smooth projective non-degenerate arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subvariety X of P^N infinite Cohen-Macaulay type becomes of finite Cohen-Macaulay type by removing Ulrich bundles if and only if N = 5 and X is a quartic scroll or the Segre product of a line and a plane. In turn, we give a complete and explicit classification of ACM bundles over these varieties.
A central problem in liaison theory is to decide whether every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of projective $n$-space can be linked by a finite number of arithmetically Gorenstein schemes to a complete intersection. We show that this can be indeed achieved if the given scheme is also generically Gorenstein and we allow the links to take place in an $(n+1)$-dimensional projective space. For example, this result applies to all reduced arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subschemes. We also show that every union of fat points in projective 3-space can be linked in the same space to a union of …
The goal of this paper is to explicitly detect all the arithmetic genera of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay projective curves with a given degree $d$. It is well-known that the arithmetic genus $g$ of a curve $C$ can be easily deduced from the $h$-vector of the curve; in the case where $C$ is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay of degree $d$, $g$ must belong to the range of integers $\big\{0,\ldots,\binom{d-1}{2}\big\}$. We develop an algorithmic procedure that allows one to avoid constructing most of the possible $h$-vectors of $C$. The essential tools are a combinatorial description of the finite O-…
Let X be a nonsingular arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay projective scheme, Z a nonsingular subscheme of X. Let π: Y --> X be the blowup of X along the ideal sheaf of Z, E_0 the pull-back of a general hyperplane in X and E the exceptional divisor. In this paper, we study projective embeddings of Y given by the divisor tE_0 - eE. We give explicit values of d and δsuch that for all e > 0 and t > ed + δ, these embeddings is projectively normal and arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. We also study the regularity of the ideal sheaf and syzygies of these embeddings. When X is a surface and Z is a 0-dimension…
We prove a Cohen-Macaulay version of a result by Avramov-Golod and Frankild-Jørgensen about Gorenstein rings, showing that if a noetherian ring $A$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $a_1,\dots,a_n$ is any sequence of elements in $A$, then the Koszul complex $K(A;a_1,\dots,a_n)$ is a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring. We further generalize this result, showing that it also holds for commutative DG-rings. In the process of proving this, we develop a new technique to study the dimension theory of a noetherian ring $A$, by finding a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring $B$ such that $\mathrm{H}^0(B) = A$, and using the Cohen-Macaula…
We classify a special type of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay sheaves of rank two on reducible and reduced quadric hypersurfaces. As a consequence we show that a reducible and reduced quadric surface is of wild type.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of "extension" of a toric variety and study its fundamental properties. This gives rise to infinitely many toric varieties with a special property, such as being set theoretic complete intersection or arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) and having a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone or a local ring with non-decreasing Hilbert function, from just one single example with the same property, verifying Rossi's conjecture for larger classes and extending some results appeared in literature.
Let X be a smooth arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subvariety of Pn. We prove that the restriction to X of the Veronese 3-uple embedding of Pn embeds X as a variety of wild representation type.
We study relations between the Cohen-Macaulay property and the positivity of $h$-vectors, showing that these two conditions are equivalent for those locally Cohen-Macaulay equidimensional closed projective subschemes $X$, which are close to a complete intersection $Y$ (of the same codimension) in terms of the difference between the degrees. More precisely, let $X\subset \mathbb P^n_K$ ($n\geq 4$) be contained in $Y$, either of codimension two with $deg(Y)-deg(X)\leq 5$ or of codimension $\geq 3$ with $deg(Y)-deg(X)\leq 3$. Over a field $K$ of characteristic 0, we prove that $X$ is arithmetical…
When studying a graded module $M$ over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety $X$, there are two standard types of resolutions commonly used to glean information: free resolutions of $M$ and vector bundle resolutions of its sheafification. Each approach comes with its own challenges. There is geometric information that free resolutions fail to encode, while vector bundle resolutions can resist study using algebraic and combinatorial techniques. Recently, Berkesch, Erman, and Smith introduced virtual resolutions, which capture desirable geometric information and are also amenable to …
This paper examines the Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for certain codimension 2 varieties in $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^2$ called sets of lines in $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^2$ (not necessarily reduced). We discuss some obstacles to finding a general characterization. We then consider certain classes of such curves, and we address two questions. First, when are they themselves ACM? Second, in a non-ACM reduced configuration, is it possible to replace one component of a primary (prime) decomposition by a suitable power (i.e. to "fatten" one line) to make the resulting scheme …
The aim of this paper is to classify indecomposable rank 2 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundles on compete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) threefolds and prove the existence of some of them. New geometric properties of the curves corresponding to rank 2 ACM bundles (by Serre correspondence) are obtained. These follow from minimal free resolutions of curves in suitably chosen fourfolds (containing Calabi-Yau threefolds as hypersurfaces). Also the existence of an indecomposable vector bundle of higher rank on a CICY threefold of type (2,4) is proved.
In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Ulrich bundles on cubic fourfold $X$ of given rank $r$. As consequences, we show that for every integer $r\ge 2$ there exists a family of indecomposable rank $r$ Ulrich bundles on the certain cubic fourfolds, depending roughly on $r$ parameters, and in particular they are of wild representation type; special surfaces on the cubic fourfolds are explicitly constructed by Macaulay2; a new $19$-dimensional family of projective ten-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds associated to a certain cubic fo…
In its most basic form, Dubreil's Theorem states that for an ideal $I$ defining a codimension $2$, arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay subscheme of projective $n$-space, the number of generators of $I$ is bounded above by the minimal degree of a minimal generator plus $1$. By introducing a new ideal $J$ which is the complete intersection of $n-1$ general linear forms, we are able to extend Dubreil's Theorem to an ideal $I$ defining a locally Cohen--Macaulay subscheme $V$ of any codimension. Our new bound involves the lengths of the Koszul homologies of the cohomology modules of $V$, with respect to…
In this paper we contribute to the construction of families of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (aCM) indecomposable vector bundles on a wide range of polarized surfaces $(X,\Oo_X(1))$ for $\Oo_X(1)$ an ample line bundle. In many cases, we show that for every positive integer $r$ there exists a family of indecomposable aCM vector bundles of rank $r$, depending roughly on $r$ parameters, and in particular they are of \emph{wild representation type}. We also introduce a general setting to study the complexity of a polarized variety $(X,\Oo_X(1))$ with respect to its category of aCM vector bundles. …
