Let $π:X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^2$ be a K3 surface of genus 2 and $L=π^{\ast}\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(3)$, and assume that $π^{\ast}\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(1)$ is ample as a line bundle on $X$. In this paper, we give a numerical characterization of initialized and ACM line bundles on $X$ with respect to $L$ and construct families of semistable indecomposable ACM bundles of higher rank, by using extensions of ACM line bundles.
In this paper, we prove the moduli spaces of genus zero stable log maps to a large class of wonderful compactifications are irreducible and unirational.
We show that for any numerical semigroup H of genus g at most 6, the locus of Weierstrass points on curves of genus g with Weierstrass semigroup H is irreducible and that for all but possibly two semigroups it is stably rational.
We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\PP^r$. In this note, we show that any non-empty $\mathcal{H}_{g+2,g,4}$ is irreducible without any restriction on the genus $g$. Our result augments the irreducibility result obtained earlier by Hristo Iliev(2006), in which several low genus $g\le 10$ cases have been left untreated.
Let $(S,L)$ be a polarized $K3$ surface of genus $p \geqslant 11$ such that $\mathrm{Pic}(S)=\mathbf{Z}[L]$, and $δ$ a non-negative integer. We prove that if $p\geqslant 4δ-3$, then the Severi variety of $δ$-nodal curves in $|L|$ is irreducible.
We show that the arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay (ACM) curves of degree 4 and genus 0 in ${\bold P}^4$ form an irreducible subset of the Hilbert scheme. Using this, we show that the singular locus of the corresponding component of the Hilbert scheme has dimension greater than 6. Moreover, we describe the structures of all ACM curves of Hilb$^{4m+1}({\bold P}^4)$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface and $L\in \mathrm{Pic}(X)$. We prove that if $L$ is $(2k-1)$-spanned, then the set $\tilde{V}_k(L)$ of all nodal and irreducible $D\in |L|$ with exactly $k$ nodes is irreducible. The set $\tilde{V}_k(L)$ is an open subset of a Severi variety of $|L|$, the full Severi variety parametrizing all integral $D\in |L|$ with geometric genus $g(L)-k$.
We prove the irreducibility of universal Severi varieties parametrizing irreducible, reduced, nodal hyperplane sections of primitive K3 surfaces of genus g, with 3 \le g \le 11, g \neq 10.
We investigate the universal Severi variety of rational curves on K3 surfaces, which parametrises irreducible rational curves in a fixed class on varying K3 surfaces of fixed genus. We investigate the conjecuted irreducibility of this space in the case of primitive classes using the deformation theory of stable maps and obtain partial results. In an appendix we give a short proof of the irreducibility of universal Severi varieties of high genus curves on K3 surfaces.
In this short note, I point out that results of Ballico and Kool--Shende--Thomas together imply that on $K3$, Enriques, and Abelian surfaces, if $L$ is a very ample and $(2p_a(L)-2g-1)$-spanned line bundle, then the equigeneric Severi variety $V_{g}(L)$ of all curves in $|L|$ having genus $g$ is non-empty, irreducible, of the expected dimension, and its general member is a $(p_a(L)-g)$-nodal curve.
We study "pure-cycle" Hurwitz spaces, parametrizing covers of the projective line having only one ramified point over each branch point. We start with the case of genus-0 covers, using a combination of limit linear series theory and group theory to show that these spaces are always irreducible. In the case of four branch points, we also compute the associated Hurwitz numbers. Finally, we give a conditional result in the higher-genus case, requiring at least 3g simply branched points. These results have equivalent formulations in group theory, and in this setting complement results of Conway-Fr…
We consider two applications of the strata of differentials of the second kind (all residues equal to zero) with fixed multiplicities of zeros and poles: Positivity: In genus $g=0$ we show any associated divisorial projection to $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ is $F$-nef and hence conjectured to be nef. We compute the class for all genus when the divisorial projection forgets only simple zeros and show in these cases the genus $g=0$ projections are indeed nef. Hurwitz spaces: We show the Hurwitz spaces of degree $d$, genus $g$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with pure branching (one ramified point ove…
Using Calegari's result on the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, we study the irreducibility of pure, regular, rank 3 weakly compatible systems of self-dual l-adic representations. As a consequence, we prove that the Tate conjecture holds for a family of elliptic surfaces defined over Q with geometric genus bigger than 1.
In this paper, we call a sub-scheme of dimension one in $\mathbb{P}^3$ a curve. It is well known that the arithmetic genus and the degree of an aCM curve $D$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is computed by the $h$-vector of $D$. However, for a given curve $D$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$, the two invariants of $D$ do not tell us whether $D$ is aCM or not. In this paper, we give a classification of curves on a smooth quintic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ which are not aCM.
Let G be a linear algebraic group, P be a parabolic subgroup of G and βbe a cycle of dimension 1 in the Chow group of the quotient G/P. Using geometric arguments and Borel's fixed point theorem, we prove that the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n}(G/P, β) of n-pointed genus 0 stable maps representing βis irreducible.
This article constructs a smooth weak Fano threefold of Picard number two with small anti-canonical morphism that arises as a blowup of a smooth curve of genus 5 and degree 8 in $\mathbb{P}^3$. While the existence of this weak Fano was known as a numerical possibility in \cite{CM13} and constructed in BL12, this paper removes the dependencies on the results in \cite{JPR11} needed in the construction of BL12 and constructs the link in the style of ACM17.
The goal of this paper is to explicitly detect all the arithmetic genera of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay projective curves with a given degree $d$. It is well-known that the arithmetic genus $g$ of a curve $C$ can be easily deduced from the $h$-vector of the curve; in the case where $C$ is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay of degree $d$, $g$ must belong to the range of integers $\big\{0,\ldots,\binom{d-1}{2}\big\}$. We develop an algorithmic procedure that allows one to avoid constructing most of the possible $h$-vectors of $C$. The essential tools are a combinatorial description of the finite O-…
We prove the connectedness of the moduli space of maps (of fixed genus and homology class) to the homogeneous space G/P by degeneration via the maximal torus action. In the genus 0 case, the irreducibility of the moduli of maps is a direct consequence of connectedness. An analysis of a related Bialynicki-Birula stratification of the map space yields a rationality result: the (coarse) moduli space of genus 0 maps to G/P is a rational variety. The rationality argument depends essentially upon rationality results for quotients of SL2 representations proven by Katsylo and Bogomolov.
We prove the irreducibility of the space parametrizing branched covers of a fixed Riemann surface $B$ of degree $d$, with at least 2d branch points, and with monodromy group equal to $S_d$. The result is classical for $g(B)=0$. The result is well-known for $g(B) > 0$, but we could find no reference.
Denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, that is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb P^r$. A component of $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ is rigid in moduli if its image under the natural map $π:\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r} \dashrightarrow \mathcal{M}_{g}$ is a one point set. In this note, we provide a proof of the fact that $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ has no components rigid in moduli for $g > 0$ and $r=3$, from which it follows that the only smooth projective curves embedded in $\m…
In this paper the author provides a generalization of classical linkage, i.e. linkage by a complete intersection of dim. 0 or 1 on arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay schemes of any dimension. Namely she looks at residuals in the scheme theoretic intersection of an aCM scheme of dim. r (resp. r+1) with r hypersurfaces of degree a_1,...,a_r. When the aCM scheme is singular a complete intersection on it may not be Gorenstein, in this case classical linkage, even if suitably generalized, does not apply. The main purpose of this paper is to prove some results related to the invariance of the deficiency …
We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\PP^r$. In this article, we show that for low genus $g$ outside the Brill-Noether range, the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}_{g+1,g,4}$ is non-empty whenever $g\ge 9$ and irreducible whose only component generically consists of linearly normal curves unless $g=9$ or $g=12$. This complements the validity of the original assertion of Severi regarding the irreducibility of $\mathcal{H}_…
We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$. In this article, we show that any non-empty $\mathcal{H}_{g+1,g,4}$ has only one component whose general element is linear normal unless $g=9$. If $g=9$, we show that $\mathcal{H}_{g+1,g,4}$ is reducible with two components and a general element of each component is linearly normal. This establishes the validity of a certain modified version of an assertion of Seve…
In this paper, we show that Severi varieties parameterizing irreducible reduced planar curves of a given degree and geometric genus are either empty or irreducible in any characteristic. Following Severi's original idea, this gives a new proof of the irreducibility of the moduli space of smooth projective curves of a given genus in positive characteristic. It is the first proof that involves no reduction to the characteristic zero case. As a further consequence, we generalize Zariski's theorem to positive characteristic and show that a general reduced planar curve of a given geometric genus is…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g(X)\geq 1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, $\M^s_X(r,d)$ the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $X$. We study the Frobenius stratification of $\M^s_X(r,d)$ in terms of Harder-Narasimhan polygons of Frobenius pull backs of stable vector bundles and obtain the irreducibility and dimension of each non-empty Frobenius stratum in case $(p,g,r)=(3,2,3)$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, $F_X:X\rightarrow X$ the absolute Frobenius morphism. Let $\M^s_X(r,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $X$. We study the Frobenius stratification of $\M^s_X(3,0)$ in terms of Harder-Narasimhan polygons of Frobenius pull backs of stable vector bundles and obtain the irreducibility and dimension of each non-empty Frobenius stratum in the case $(p,g)=(3,2)$.
We consider maps on a surface of genus $g$ with all vertices of degree at least three and positive real lengths assigned to the edges. In particular, we study the family of such metric maps with fixed genus $g$ and fixed number $n$ of faces with circumferences $α_1,\ldots,α_n$ and a $β$-irreducibility constraint, which roughly requires that all contractible cycles have length at least $β$. Using recent results on the enumeration of discrete maps with an irreducibility constraint, we compute the volume $V_{g,n}^{(β)}(α_1,\ldots,α_n)$ of this family of maps that arises naturally from the Lebesgu…
Let $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curves of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\PP^r$. We denote by $\mathcal{H}^\mathcal{L}_{d,g,r}$ the union of those components of $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ whose general element is linearly normal and we show that any non-empty $\mathcal{H}^\mathcal{L}_{d,g,r}$ ($d\ge g+r-3$) is irreducible for an extensive range of triples $(d,g,r)$ beyond the Brill-Noether range. This establishes the validity of a suitably modified assertion of Severi regarding the irreducibility of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}^\m…
Let $X$ be a non-singular projective curve of genus $g\ge2$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let $\mo$ denote the moduli space of stable bundles of rank $n$ and degree $d$ on $X$ and $\wn $ the Brill-Noether loci in $\mo .$ We prove that, if $0\leq d \leq n $ and $\wn $ is non-empty, then it is irreducible of the expected dimension and smooth outside $\wnn$. We prove further that in this range $\wn$ is non-empty if and only if $d>0$, $n\leq d+(n-k)g$ and $(n,d,k) \not= (n,n,n)$. We also prove irreducibility and non-emptiness for the semistable Brill-Noether loci.
The paper deals with a three-parameter family of special double confluent Heun equations that was introduced and studied by V.M.Buchstaber and S.I.Tertychnyi as an equivalent presentation of a model of overdamped Josephson junction in superconductivity. The parameters are $l,λ,μ\in\mathbb R$. Buchstaber and Tertychnyi described those parameter values, for which the corresponding equation has a polynomial solution. They have shown that for $μ\neq0$ this happens exactly when $l\in\mathbb N$ and the parameters $(λ,μ)$ lie on an algebraic curve $Γ_l\subset\mathbb C^2_{(λ,μ)}$ called the $l$-th spe…
