We consider maps on a surface of genus $g$ with all vertices of degree at least three and positive real lengths assigned to the edges. In particular, we study the family of such metric maps with fixed genus $g$ and fixed number $n$ of faces with circumferences $α_1,\ldots,α_n$ and a $β$-irreducibility constraint, which roughly requires that all contractible cycles have length at least $β$. Using recent results on the enumeration of discrete maps with an irreducibility constraint, we compute the volume $V_{g,n}^{(β)}(α_1,\ldots,α_n)$ of this family of maps that arises naturally from the Lebesgue measure on the edge lengths. It is shown to be a homogeneous polynomial in $β, α_1,\ldots, α_n$ of degree $6g-6+2n$ and to satisfy string and dilaton equations. Surprisingly, for $g=0,1$ and $β=2π$ the volume $V_{g,n}^{(2π)}$ is identical, up to powers of two, to the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}^{\mathrm{WP}}$ of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ and $n$ geodesic boundary components of length $L_i = \sqrt{α_i^2 - 4π^2}$, $i=1,\ldots,n$. For genus $g\geq 2$ the identity between the volumes fails, but we provide explicit generating functions for both types of volumes, demonstrating that they are closely related. Finally we discuss the possibility of bijective interpretations via hyperbolic polyhedra.
We show that Mirzakhani's recursions for the volumes of moduli space of Riemann surfaces are a special case of random matrix loop equations, and therefore we confirm again that Kontsevitch's integral is a generating function for those volumes. As an application, we propose a formula for the Weil-Petersson volume Vol(M_{g,0}).
This is a survey paper on the topic of Weil-Petersson geometry of Teichmuller spaces. Even though historically the subject has been developed as a branch of complex analysis, the treatment here is from the view-point of differential geometry, much influenced by the works of Eells, Earle, Fischer, Tromba and Wolpert over the several decades. The Weil-Petersson geometry has negative sectional curvature, and the main theme of this article is to exploit the convexity of the Weil-Petersson distance function induced by the negativity of the curvature, from Riemannian geometric approaches as well as …
A path integral in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity is given by integrating over the volume of the moduli of Riemann surfaces with boundaries, known as the "Weil-Petersson volume," together with integrals over wiggles along the boundaries. The exact computation of the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}(b_1, \ldots, b_n)$ is difficult when the genus $g$ becomes large. We utilize two partial differential equations known to hold on the Weil-Petersson volumes to estimate asymptotic behaviors of the volume with two boundaries $V_{g,2}(b_1, b_2)$ and the volume with three boundaries $V_{g,3}(b_1, b_2, b_3…
We gave a new very simple proof that the completion of the space of the diffeomorphism of the circle modulo conformal maps with respect to the Weil-Petersson Metric is a complex analytic manifold modeled on the Hilbert space with 3/2 Sobolev norm. Our proof is based on the analogue of the Hadamard Theorem that the exponentila map is a complex analytic map from the tanegnt space of a point of a simply connected manifold to the manifold.
We survey the renormalized volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, as a tool for Teichmuller theory, using simple differential geometry arguments to recover results sometimes first achieved by other means. One such application is McMullen's quasifuchsian (or more generally Kleinian) reciprocity, for which different arguments are proposed. Another is the fact that the renormalized volume of quasifuchsian (or more generally geometrically finite) hyperbolic 3-manifolds provides a Kahler potential for the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmuller space. Yet another is the fact that the grafting map is symple…

The restricted class of quasicircles sometimes called the "Weil-Petersson-class" has been a subject of interest in the last decade. In this paper we establish a Sokhotski-Plemelj jump formula for WP-class quasicircles, for boundary data in a certain conformally invariant Besov space. We show that this Besov space is precisely the set of traces on the boundary of harmonic functions of finite Dirichlet energy on the WP-class quasidisk. We apply this result to multiply connected domains, Sigma, which are the complement of n+1 WP-class quasidisks. Namely, we give a bounded isomorphism between the …
Our goal here is to present a detailed analysis connecting the anomalous scaling properties of 2D simplicial quantum gravity to the geometry of the moduli space M_{g,N} of genus g Riemann surfaces with N punctures. In the case of pure gravity we prove that the scaling properties of the set of dynamical triangulations with N vertices are directly provided by the large N asymptotics of the Weil-Petersson volume of M_{g,N}, recently discussed by Manin and Zograf. Such a geometrical characterization explains why dynamical triangulations automatically take into account the anomalous scaling propert…

The paper is related to the classification of special manifolds and projective special manifolds. One of the result of this paper is that, if the Weil-Petersson metric on a projective special manifold is complete, then the Hodge metrc and the Weil-Petersson metrc are equivalent.
