This article studies the behaviour under liaison of the deficiency modules of schemes that are not assumed to be Cohen-Macaulay. Our study uses in particular a generalization of Serre duality, and gives a satisfactory description of this behaviour in dimension at most three. On the way we show other properties of linked schemes.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface of dimension $\geq 5$ and let $E$ be an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundle on $X$ of any rank. We prove that $E$ splits as a direct sum of line bundles if and only if $H^i_*(X, \wedge^2 E) = 0$ for $i = 1,2,3,4$. We propose a concept of module liaison that extends Gorenstein liaison of ideals and provides an equivalence relation among unmixed modules over a commutative Gorenstein ring. We introduce the use of liaison addition to the study of hyperplane arrangements. For an arrangement, $\mathcal A$, of hyperplanes in $\mathbb P^n$, $\mathcal A$ is free if $R/J$ is Cohen-Macaulay, where $J$ is the Jacobian ideal of $\mathcal A$. Terao's conjecture says that freeness of $\mathcal A$ is determined by the combinatorics of the intersection lattice of $\mathcal A$. We study Gorenstein liaison of codimension two subschemes of an arithmetically Gorenstein scheme X. Our main result is a criterion for two such subschemes to be in the same Gorenstein liaison class, in terms of the category of ACM sheaves on X. As a consequence we obtain a criterion for X to have the property that every codimension 2 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection. For an arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay subscheme of projective space, there is a well-known bound for the highest degree of a minimal generator for the defining ideal of the subscheme, in terms of the Hilbert function. We prove a natural extension of this bound for arbitrary locally Cohen--Macaulay subschemes. We then specialize to curves in $\pthree$, and show that the curves whose defining ideals have generators of maximal degree satisfy an interesting cohomological property. We study the Tate resolutions and the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Cohen-Macaulay modules over Gorenstein rings. One consequence is an extension of a well-known result about linkage of complete intersections.
The paper answers a question by Jonathan Wahl,giving examples of regular surfaces S (so their canonical ring is a Gorenstein graded ring) having the following properties: 1) their canonical divisor K_S = rL is a positive multiple of an ample divisor L 2) the graded ring R := R (X,L ) associated to L is not Cohen-Macaulay. In the appendix Wahl shows how these examples lead to the existence of Cohen-Macaulay singularities with K_X Q -Cartier which are not Q -Gorenstein, since their index one cover is not Cohen- Macaulay.

We define very proper intersections of modules and projective subschemes. It turns out that equidimensional locally Cohen-Macaulay modules intersect very properly if and only if they intersect properly. We prove a Bezout theorem for modules which meet very properly. Furthermore, we show for equidimensional subschemes $X$ and $Y$: If they intersect properly in an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of positive dimension then $X$ and $Y$ are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. The module version of this result implies splitting criteria for reflexive sheaves.
A rational map whose source and image are projectively embedded varieties has an {\em Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay graph} if the Rees algebra of one (hence any) of its base ideals is a Cohen-Macaulay ring. If the map is birational onto the image one considers how this property forces an upper bound on the degree of a representative of the map. We show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem can fail on smooth Fano varieties of any characteristic p > 0. Taking cones over some of these varieties, we give the first examples of terminal singularities which are not Cohen-Macaulay. By a different method, we construct a terminal singularity of dimension 3 (the lowest possible) in characteristic 2 which is not Cohen-Macaulay.

This survey presents some recent results of G.-M.Greuel and the author on vector bundles over algebraic curves and on Cohen-Macaulay modules over surface singularities.
