Gorenstein Biliaison and ACM Sheaves

Let $X$ be a normal arithmetically Gorenstein scheme in ${\mathbb P}^n$. We give a criterion for all codimension two ACM subschemes of $X$ to be in the same Gorenstein biliaison class on $X$, in terms of the category of ACM sheaves on $X$. These are sheaves that correspond to the graded maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules on the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X$. Using known results on MCM modules, we are able to determine the Gorenstein biliaison classes of codimension two subschemes of certain varieties, including the nonsingular quadric surface in ${\mathbb P}^3$, and the cone over it in ${\ma…

Liaison with Cohen-Macaulay Modules

We describe some recent work concerning Gorenstein liaison of codimension two subschemes of a projective variety. Applications make use of the algebraic theory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, which we review in an Appendix.

Tetrahedral Curves

A tetrahedral curve is a space curve whose defining ideal is an intersection of powers of monomial prime ideals of height two. It is supported on a tetrahedral configuration of lines. Schwartau described when certain such curves are ACM, namely he restricted to curves supported on a certain four of the six lines. We consider the general situation. We first show that starting with an arbitrary tetrahedral curve, there is a particular reduction that produces a smaller tetrahedral curve and preserves the even liaison class. The Minimal Resolution Conjecture on a general quartic surface in $\mathbb P^3$

Mustaţă has given a conjecture for the graded Betti numbers in the minimal free resolution of the ideal of a general set of points on an irreducible projective algebraic variety. For surfaces in $\mathbb P^3$ this conjecture has been proven for points on quadric surfaces and on general cubic surfaces. In the latter case, Gorenstein liaison was the main tool. Codimension 3 Arithmetically Gorenstein Subschemes of projective $N$-space

We study the lowest dimensional open case of the question whether every arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^N$ is glicci, that is, whether every zero-scheme in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is glicci. We show that a set of $n \geq 56$ points in general position in $\PP^3$ admits no strictly descending Gorenstein liaison or biliaison. In order to prove this theorem, we establish a number of important results about arithmetically Gorenstein zero-schemes in $\mathbb{P}^3$.

Geometry of arithmetically Gorenstein curves in ${\mathbb P}^4$

We characterize the postulation character of arithmetically Gorenstein curves in ${\mathbb P}^4$. We give conditions under which the curve can be realized in the form $mH-K$ on some ACM surface. Finally, we strengthen a theorem of Watanabe by showing that any general arithmetically Gorenstein curve in ${\mathbb P}^4$ can be obtained from a line by a series of ascending complete-intersection biliaisons.

Glicci ideals

A central problem in liaison theory is to decide whether every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of projective $n$-space can be linked by a finite number of arithmetically Gorenstein schemes to a complete intersection. We show that this can be indeed achieved if the given scheme is also generically Gorenstein and we allow the links to take place in an $(n+1)$-dimensional projective space. For example, this result applies to all reduced arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subschemes.
