We establish, for a generically big Hermitian line bundle, the convergence of truncated Harder-Narasimhan polygons and the uniform continuity of the limit. As applications, we prove a conjecture of Moriwaki asserting that the arithmetic volume function is actually a limit instead of a sup-limit, and we show how to compute the asymptotic polygon of a Hermitian line bundle, by using the arithmetic volume function.
We introduce an adelic Cartier divisor over a trivially valued field and discuss the bigness of it. For bigness, we give the integral representation of the arithmetic volume and prove the existence of limit of it. Moreover, we show that the arithmetic volume is continuous and log concave.
For any line bundle written as a subtraction of two ample line bundles, Siu's inequality gives a criterion on its bigness. We generalize this inequality to a relative case. The arithmetic meaning behind the inequality leads to its application on algebraic dynamic systems, which is the equidistribution theorem of generic and small net of subvarieties over a function field.
We investigate effectiveness and ampleness of adjoint divisors of the form $aL+bK_X$, where $L$ is a suitably positive line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$ and $a,b$ are positive integers.
Let X be a smooth projective surface over a number field, and $f: X \to X$ an automorphism of positive topological entropy. In this paper, we construct a height function on X that behaves well relative to f and deduce some arithmetic properties of (X; f).
We introduce the positive intersection product in Arakelov geometry and prove that the arithmetic volume function is continuously differentiable. As applications, we compute the distribution function of the asymptotic measure of a Hermitian line bundle and several other arithmetic invariants.
In this paper, we provide evidence to support a positive answer to a question of Hassett and Tschinkel. In particular, if an algebraic variety V has a dense set of rational points, they ask whether or not the set of D-integral points is potentially dense, where D is a set of codimension at least two. We give a positive answer to this question in many cases, including varieties whose generic linear section is a smooth rational curve, and certain K3 surfaces. We also discuss some stronger notions of integrality of points, and give some positive answers to some cases of the analogous question in …
The Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture relates two different invariants of a surjective endomorphism, the dynamical and arithmetic degrees. As the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture is only meaningful when a morphism has a Zariski dense orbit, it has no content for varieties with positive Kodaira dimension. A generalization of the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture which is meaningful in positive Kodaira dimension is the so called sAND conjecture, which involves the set of "small" arithmetic degrees. Kawaguchi and Silverman showed that a small arithmetic degree is the modulus of an eigenvalue of $f^*\colo…
Let V be a rational quadratic space of signature (m,2). A conjecture of Kudla relates the arithmetic degrees of top degree special cycles on an integral model of a Shimura variety associated with SO(V) to the coefficients of the central derivative of an incoherent Siegel Eisenstein series of genus m+1. We prove this conjecture for the coefficients of non-singular index T when T is not positive definite. We also prove it when T is positive definite and the corresponding special cycle has dimension 0. To obtain these results, we establish new local arithmetic Siegel-Weil formulas at the archimed…
If K is a number field, arithmetic duality theorems for tori and complexes of tori over K are crucial to understand local-global principles for linear algebraic groups over K. When K is a global field of positive characteristic, we prove similar arithmetic duality theorems, including a Poitou-Tate exact sequence for Galois hypercohomology of complexes of tori. One of the main ingredients is Artin-Mazur-Milne duality theorem for fppf cohomology of finite flat commutative group schemes.
Let m be a positive integer and a,q two rational numbers. Denote by AP_m(a,q) the set of rational numbers d such that a,a+q,...,a+(m-1)q form an arithmetic progression in the Edwards curve E_d:x^2+y^2=1+d x^2 y^2. We study the set AP_m(a,q) and we parametrize it by the rational points of an algebraic curve.
Let K be an arithmetic function field, that is, a field of finite type over the rational number field. In this note, as an application of the height theory due to Chen-Moriwaki, we would like to show that the solutions of Fermat's curve X^N + y^N = 1 of degree N over K consist of only either 0 or roots of unity for almost positive integers N. More precisely, the density of such N is 1.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic p, let N be a positive integer, let f be a self-map on the algebraic torus T=G_m^N defined over K, let V be a curve in T defined over K, and let x be a K-point of T. We show that the set S consisting of all positive integers n for which f^n(x) is contained in V is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions, along with a finite set and with finitely many p-arithmetic sequences, which are sets of the form {b + ap^{kn}: n is a positive integer} where a and b are given rational numbers and k is a positive integer. We also prove t…
In this paper, we show that the arithmetic volume function defined on the space of pairs of adelic R-Cartier divisors and base conditions is differentiable at a big pair, and that its derivative is given by an arithmetic restricted positive intersection number defined for the pair.
We describe a general program for studying the dynamics of surjective endomorphisms of algebraic varieties that are amenable to techniques from the minimal model program. We obtain density results on the pre-periodic points of surjective endomorphisms of varieties admitting an int-amplified endomorphism, and reduce certain cases of the Medvedev-Scanlon conjecture to so called Q-abelian varieties using our approach. We also provide a connection between the existence of an automorphism with positive entropy and group of connected components of a variety. In particular, we show that if $X$ is nor…
We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.
Looking in positive characteristic for failures of the Bertini-Sard theorem, we determine, up to birational equivalence, the separable proper morphisms of smooth algebraic varieties in characteristic two, whose fibres are non-smooth curves of arithmetic genus two.
Let $L$ be a line bundle on a scheme $X$, proper over a field. The property of $L$ being nef can sometimes be "thickened", allowing reductions to positive characteristic. We call such line bundles arithmetically nef. It is known that a line bundle $L$ may be nef, but not arithmetically nef. We show that $L$ is arithmetically nef if and only if its restriction to its stable base locus is arithmetically nef. Consequently, if $L$ is nef and its stable base locus has dimension $1$ or less, then $L$ is arithmetically nef.
Let $X$ be a compact complex, not necessarily Kähler, manifold of dimension $n$. We characterise the volume of any holomorphic line bundle $L\to X$ as the supremum of the Monge-Ampère masses $\int_X T_{ac}^n$ over all closed positive currents $T$ in the first Chern class of $L$, where $T_{ac}$ is the absolutely continuous part in the Lebesgue decomposition. This result, new in the non-Kähler context, can be seen as holomorphic Morse inequalities for the cohomology of high tensor powers of line bundles endowed with arbitrarily singular Hermitian metrics. It gives, in particular, a new bigness c…
We construct the moduli space of Enriques surfaces in positive characteristic and eventually over the integers, and determine its local and global structure. As an application, we show lifting of Enriques surfaces to characteristic zero. The key observation is that the canonical double cover of an Enriques surface is birational to the complete intersection of three quadrics in IP^5, even in characteristic 2.
In this paper, we study arithmetic dynamics in arbitrary characteristic, in particular in positive characteristic. We generalise some basic facts on arithmetic degree and canonical height in positive characteristic. As applications, we prove the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces of positive entropy, the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces and for endomorphisms of projective varieties with large first dynamical degree. We also study ergodic theory for constructible topology. For example, we prove the equidistribution o…
