We develop a theory of abstract arithmetic Chow rings where the role of the fibers at infinity is played by a complex of abelian groups that computes a suitable cohomology theory. This theory allows the construction of many variants of the arithmetic Chow groups with different properties. As particular cases of this formalism we recover the original arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé for projective varieties, we introduce a theory of arithmetic Chow groups which are covariant with respect to arbitrary proper morphisms, and we develop a theory of arithmetic Chow rings using a complex of differential forms with log-log singularities along a fixed normal crossings divisor. This last theory is suitable for the study of automorphic line bundles. In particular, we generalize the classical Faltings height with respect to a logarithmically singular hermitian line bundle to higher dimensional cycles. As an application we compute the Faltings height of Hecke correspondences on a product of modular curves.
In 1985 Kazuya Kato formulated a fascinating framework of conjectures which generalizes the Hasse principle for the Brauer group of a global field to the so-called cohomological Hasse principle for an arithmetic scheme. In this paper we prove the prime-to-characteristic part of the cohomological Hasse principle. We also explain its implications on finiteness of motivic cohomology and special values of zeta functions.
We give a new definition of higher arithmetic Chow groups for smooth projective varieties defined over a number field, which is similar to Gillet and Soulé's definition of arithmetic Chow groups. We also give a compact description of the intersection theory of such groups. A consequence of this theory is the definition of a height pairing between two higher algebraic cycles, of complementary dimensions, whose real regulator class is zero. This description agrees with Beilinson's height pairing for the classical arithmetic Chow groups. We also give examples of the higher arithmetic intersection…
We define a family of arithmetic zero cycles in the arithmetic Chow group of a modular curve X_0(N), for N>3 odd and squarefree, and identify the arithmetic degrees of these cycles as q-coefficients of the central derivative of a Siegel Eisenstein series of genus two. This parallels work of Kudla-Rapoport-Yang for Shimura curves.
In this article, we study the Chow group of the motive associated to a tempered global $L$-packet $π$ of unitary groups of even rank with respect to a CM extension, whose global root number is $-1$. We show that, under some restrictions on the ramification of $π$, if the central derivative $L'(1/2,π)$ is nonvanishing, then the $π$-nearly isotypic localization of the Chow group of a certain unitary Shimura variety over its reflex field does not vanish. This proves part of the Beilinson--Bloch conjecture for Chow groups and $L$-functions, which generalizes the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectur…
A main theme of the paper is a conjecture of Bloch-Kato on the image of $p$-adic regulator maps for a proper smooth variety $X$ over an algebraic number field $k$. The conjecture for a regulator map of particular degree and weight is related to finiteness of two arithmetic objects: One is the $p$-primary torsion part of the Chow group in codimension 2 of $X$. Another is an unramified cohomology group of $X$. As an application, for a regular model ${\mathscr X}$ of $X$ over the integer ring of $k$, we show an injectivity result on torsion of a cycle class map from the Chow group in codimension …
A Riemmanian foliated dynamical system of 3-dimension $(\mathrm{RFDS}^{3})$ is a closed Riemannian 3-manifold with additional structures: foliation, dynamical system. In the context of arithmetic topology, it is a geometric/analytic analogue of an arithmetic scheme with a conjectural dynamical system suggested by C. Deninger. In this paper, we show leafwise cohomological expression of dynamical zeta function on a Riemannian foliated dynamical system.
This article describes results of joint work with Michael Rapoport and Tonghai Yang. First, we construct an modular form ϕ(τ) of weight 3/2 valued in the arithmetic Chow group of the arithmetic surface M attached toa Shimura curve over Q. The q-expansion of this function is an analogue of the Hirzebruch-Zagier generating function for the cohomology classes of curves on a Hilbert modular surface. This`arithmetic theta function' is used to define an `arithmetic theta lift' from modular forms of weight 3/2 to the arithmetic Chow group of M. For integers t_1 and t_2 with t_1t_2 not a square, the (…
We prove results describing the structure of a Chow ring associated to a product of graphs, which arises from the Gross-Schoen desingularization of a product of regular proper semi-stable curves over discrete valuation rings. By the works of Johannes Kolb and Shou-Wu Zhang, this ring controls the behavior of the non-Archimedean height pairing on products of smooth proper curves over non-Archimedean fields. We provide a complete description of the degree map, and prove vanishing results affirming a conjecture of Kolb, which, combined with his work, leads to an analytic formula for the arithmeti…
We prove various results on the cohomology of arithmetic lattices arising from quaternion algebras over a number field with at least one complex place, including a strong restriction on the allowable weights of cuspidal cohomological automorphic forms and a conditional power saving for their multiplicities when the associated locally symmetric space is a hyperbolic 3-manifold.
We form generating series of special divisors, valued in the Chow group and in the arithmetic Chow group, on the compactified integral model of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group of signature (n-1,1), and prove their modularity. The main ingredient of the proof is the calculation of the vertical components appearing in the divisor of a Borcherds product on the integral model.
In this paper we extend the unramified class field theory for arithmetic surfaces of K. Kato and S. Saito to the relative case. Let X be a regular proper arithmetic surface and let Y be the support of divisor on X. Let CH_0(X,Y) denote the relative Chow group of zero cycles and let \tilde π_1^t(X,Y)^ {ab} denote the abelianized modified tame fundamental group of (X,Y) (which classifies finite etale abelian covings of X-Y which are tamely ramified along Y and in which every real point splits completely). THEOREM: There exists a natural reciprocity isomorphism rec: CH_0(X,Y) --> \tilde π_1^t(X,Y…
The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism realizes the automorphic representation generated by an automorphic newform in certain cohomology of an arithmetic group. In this short note, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism as a connection morphism of certain exact sequence of G-modules, for the multiplicative group G of any quaternion algebra over a totally real field.
Archimedean cohomology provides a cohomological interpretation for the calculation of the local L-factors at archimedean places as zeta regularized determinant of a log of Frobenius. In this paper we investigate further the properties of the Lefschetz and log of monodromy operators on this cohomology. We use the Connes-Kreimer formalism of renormalization to obtain a fuchsian connection whose residue is the log of the monodromy. We also present a dictionary of analogies between the geometry of a tubular neighborhood of the ``fiber at arithmetic infinity'' of an arithmetic variety and the compl…
In the context of arithmetic surfaces, Bost defined a generalized Arithmetic Chow Group (ACG) using the Sobolev space L^2_1. We study the behavior of these groups under pull-back and push-forward and we prove a projection formula. We use these results to define an action of the Hecke operators on the ACG of modular curves and to show that they are self-adjoint with respect to the arithmetic intersection product. The decomposition of the ACG in eigencomponents which follows allows us to define new numerical invariants, which are refined versions of the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. …
We show a Riemann-Roch theorem for group ring bundles over an arithmetic surface; this is expressed using the higher adeles of Beilinson-Parshin and the tame symbol via a theory of adelic equivariant Chow groups and Chern classes. The theorem is obtained by combining a group ring coefficient version of the local Riemann-Roch formula as in Kapranov-Vasserot with results on K-groups of group rings and an explicit description of group ring bundles over P^1. Our set-up provides an extension of several aspects of the classical Fr"ohlich theory of the Galois module structure of rings of integers of …
In this paper we investigate arithmetic properties of automorphic forms on the group G' = GL_m/D, for a central division-algebra D over an arbitrary number field F. The results of this article are generalizations of results in the split case, i.e., D=F, by Shimura, Harder, Waldspurger and Clozel for square-integrable automorphic forms and also by Franke and Franke-Schwermer for general automorphic representations. We also compare our theorems on automorphic forms of the group G' to statements on automorphic forms of its split form using the global Jacquet-Langlands correspondence developed by …
We study special cycles on integral models of Shimura varieties associated with unitary similitude groups of signature (n-1,1). We construct an arithmetic theta lift from harmonic Maass forms of weight 2-n to the arithmetic Chow group of the integral model of a unitary Shimura variety, by associating to a harmonic Maass form f a linear combination of Kudla-Rapoport divisors, equipped with the Green function given by the regularized theta lift of f. Our main result is an equality of two complex numbers: (1) the height pairing of the arithmetic theta lift of f against a CM cycle, and (2) the cen…
This paper is about the arithmetic of Kudla-Rapoport divisors on Shimura varieties of type GU(n-1,1). In the first part of the paper we construct a toroidal compactification of N. Kramer's integral model of the Shimura variety. This extends work of K.-W. Lan, who constructed a compactification at unramified primes. In the second, and main, part of the paper we use ideas of Kudla to construct Green functions for the Kudla-Rapoport divisors on the open Shimura variety, and analyze the behavior of these functions near the boundary of the compactification. The Green functions turn out to have loga…
