This article describes results of joint work with Michael Rapoport and Tonghai Yang. First, we construct an modular form ϕ(τ) of weight 3/2 valued in the arithmetic Chow group of the arithmetic surface M attached toa Shimura curve over Q. The q-expansion of this function is an analogue of the Hirzebruch-Zagier generating function for the cohomology classes of curves on a Hilbert modular surface. This`arithmetic theta function' is used to define an `arithmetic theta lift' from modular forms of weight 3/2 to the arithmetic Chow group of M. For integers t_1 and t_2 with t_1t_2 not a square, the (t_1,t_2)-Fourier coefficient of the height pairing <ϕ(τ_1),ϕ(τ_2)> coincides with the (t_1,t_2)-Fourier coefficient of the restriction to the diagonal of the central derivative of a certain Eisenstein series of weight 3/2 and genus 2. Using this fact and results about the doubling integral for forms of weight 3/2, we prove that the arithmetic theta lift of a Hecke eigenform f is nonzero if and only if there is no local obstruction (theta dichotomy) and the standard Hecke L-function L(s,F) of the corresponding newform F of weight 2 has nonvanishing derivative, L'(1,F)\ne0, at the center of symmetry. This is an analogue of a result of Waldspurger according to which the classical Shimura lift of such a form is nonzero if and only if there is no local obstruction and L(1,F)\ne0. Detailed proofs will be given elsewhere.
We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.
We prove an arithmetic version of a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier saying that Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors on a Hilbert modular surface are the coefficients of an elliptic modular form of weight two. Moreover, we determine the arithmetic self-intersection number of the line bundle of modular forms equipped with its Petersson metric on a regular model of a Hilbert modular surface, and study Faltings heights of arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors.
We construct local charts for the ramified cusps of the Hilbert modular variety of level $Γ_1(\mathfrak{c},\mathfrak{n})$. This allows us, following closely M. Rapoport and C.-L. Chai, to construct arithmetic toroidal and minimal compactifications of these modular varieties. Some applications to modular forms are given. See our joint work with J. Tilouine for other applications.
We recall first the analytic theory of the Hilbert modular varieties of level $Γ_1(\mathfrak{c},\mathfrak{n})$ and their compactifications. We construct arithmetic toroidal compactifications of the universal Hilbert-Blumenthal abelian variety (and of its fiber products), over the compactifications of the Hilbert modular variety constructed by the first author. We give several applications related to Hodge theory, Hilbert-Jacobi modular forms and Hilbert modular forms of half-integer weight.
This article has three goals. First, we generalize the result of Deuring and Serre on the characterization of supersingular locus of modular curves to all Shimura varieties given by totally indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. Second, we generalize the result of Ribet on arithmetic level raising to such Shimura varieties in the inert case. Third, as an application to number theory, we use the previous results to study the Selmer group of certain triple product motive of an elliptic curve, in the context of the Bloch--Kato conjecture.
We find that the first Hurwitz triplet possesses two distinct arithmetic structures. As Shimura curves $X_1$, $X_2$, $X_3$, whose levels are with norm 13. As non-congruence modular curves $Y_1$, $Y_2$, $Y_3$, whose levels are 7. Both of them are defined over ${\Bbb Q}(\cos \frac{2 π}{7})$. However, for the third non-congruence modular curve $Y_3$, there exist an "exotic" duality between the associated non-congruence modular forms and the Hilbert modular forms, both of them are related to ${\Bbb Q}(e^{\frac{2 πi}{13}})$! Our results have relations and applications to modular equations of degree…
We study the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on arithmetic surfaces with respect to morphisms of a particular kind. We obtain upper bounds for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on minimal regular models of the modular curves associated with congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ with square free level, as well as for the modular curves X(N) and the Fermat curves with prime exponent.
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
The theory of elliptic modular forms has gained significant momentum from the discovery of relaxed yet well-behaved notions of modularity, such as mock modular forms, higher order modular forms, and iterated Eichler-Shimura integrals. Applications beyond number theory range from combinatorics, geometry, and representation theory to string theory and conformal field theory. We unify these relaxed notions in the framework of vector-valued modular forms by introducing a new class of $\mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$-representations: virtually real-arithmetic types. The key point of the paper is that …
We classify ``arithmetic convection equations'' on modular curves, and describe their space of solutions. Certain of these solutions involve the Fourier expansions of the Eisenstein modular forms of weight 4 and 6, while others involve the Serre-Tate expansions of the same modular forms; in this sense, our arithmetic convection equations can be seen as "unifying" the two types of expansions. The theory can be generalized to one of ``arithmetic heat equations'' on modular curves, but we prove that modular curves do not carry ``arithmetic wave equations.'' Finally, we prove an instability result…
A formalism of arithmetic partial differential equations (PDEs) is being developed in which one considers several arithmetic differentiations at one fixed prime. In this theory solutions can be defined in algebraically closed p-adic fields. As an application we show that for at least two arithmetic directions every elliptic curve possesses a non-zero arithmetic PDE Manin map of order 1; such maps do not exist in the arithmetic ODE case. Similarly we construct and study "genuinely PDE" differential modular forms. As further applications we derive a Theorem of the Kernel and a Reciprocity Theore…
In this paper, we compute the semi-stable models of modular curves $X_0(p^2)$ for odd primes $p > 3$ and compute the Arakelov self-intersection numbers of the relative dualising sheaves for these models. We give two arithmetic applications of our computations. In particular, we give an effective version of the Bogomolov conjecture following the strategy outlined by Zhang and find the stable Faltings heights of the arithmetic surfaces corresponding to these modular curves.
In this paper, we derive a new computational algorithm for Barrett technique for modular polynomial multiplication, termed BA-P. BA-P is then applied to a new residue arithmetic based Barrett algorithm for modular polynomial multiplication (BA-MPM). The focus of the work is an algorithm that carries out the entire computation using only modular arithmetic without conversion to large degree polynomials. There are several parts to this work. First, we set up a new BA-P using polynomials other than u^alfa. Second, residue arithmetic based BA-MPM is described. A complete mathematical framework is …
In this paper, we obtain an explicit arithmetic intersection formula on a Hilbert modular surface between the diagonal embedding of the modular curve and a CM cycle associated to a non-biquadratic CM quartic field. This confirms a special case of the author's conjecture with J. Bruinier in \cite{BY}, and is a generalization of the beautiful factorization formula of Gross and Zagier on singular moduli. As an application, we proved the first non-trivial non-abelian Chowla-Selberg formula, a special case of Colmez conjecture.
We determine the variance for the fluctuations of the arithmetic measures obtained by collecting all closed geodesics on the modular surface with the same discriminant and ordering them by the latter. This arithmetic variance differs by subtle factors from the variance that one gets when considering individual closed geodesics when ordered by their length. The arithmetic variance is the same one that appears in the fluctuations of measures associated with quantum states on the modular surface.
These course notes are about computing modular forms and some of their arithmetic properties. Their aim is to explain and prove the modular symbols algorithm in as elementary and as explicit terms as possible, and to enable the devoted student to implement it over any ring (such that a sufficient linear algebra theory is available in the chosen computer algebra system). The chosen approach is based on group cohomology and along the way the needed tools from homological algebra are provided.
We study the probabilistic behavior of sums of Fourier coefficients in arithmetic progressions. We prove a result analogous to previous work of Fouvry-Ganguly-Kowalski-Michel and Kowalski-Ricotta in the context of half-integral weight holomorphic cusp forms and for prime power modulus. We actually show that these sums follow in a suitable range a mixed Gaussian distribution which comes from the asymptotic mixed distribution of Salié sums.
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of…
We investigate modular embeddings for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. First we prove some purely algebro-geometric or even topological criteria for a regular map from a smooth complex curve to a quaternionic Shimura variety to be covered by a modular embedding. Then we set up an adelic formalism for modular embeddings and apply our criteria to study the effect of abstract field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ on modular embeddings. Finally we derive that the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ operates on the dessins d'enfants defined by principal congruence subgroups of (arithmetic or non-ar…
After Zagier proved that the traces of singular moduli $j(z)$ are Fourier coefficients of a weakly holomorphic modular form, various properties of the traces of the singular values of modular functions mostly on the full modular group $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ have been investigated such as their exact formulas, limiting distribution, duality, and congruences. The purpose of this paper is to generalize these arithmetic properties of traces of singular values of a weakly holomorphic modular function on the full modular group to those on a congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$.
We investigate integrality and divisibility properties of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms of weight $2k$ associated to positive definite integral binary quadratic forms. For example, we show that if there are no non-trivial cusp forms of weight $2k$, then the $n$-th coefficients of these meromorphic modular forms are divisible by $n^{k-1}$ for every natural number $n$. Moreover, we prove that their coefficients are non-vanishing and have either constant or alternating signs. Finally, we obtain a relation between the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms, the coeff…
Mazur, Rubin, and Stein have recently formulated a series of conjectures about statistical properties of modular symbols in order to understand central values of twists of elliptic curve $L$-functions. Two of these conjectures relate to the asymptotic growth of the first and second moments of the modular symbols. We prove these on average by using analytic properties of Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols. Another of their conjectures predicts the Gaussian distribution of normalized modular symbols ordered according to the size of the denominator of the cusps. We prove this conjecture…
Let $f$ be a half-integral weight cusp form of level $4N$ for odd and squarefree $N$ and let $a(n)$ denote its $n^{\rm th}$ normalized Fourier coefficient. Assuming that all the coefficients $a(n)$ are real, we study the sign of $a(n)$ when $n$ runs through an arithmetic progression. As a consequence, we establish a lower bound for the number of integers $n\le x$ such that $a(n)>n^{-α}$ where $x$ and $α$ are positive and $f$ is not necessarily a Hecke eigenform.
In this paper, we consider modular forms for finite index subgroups of the modular group whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic. It is well-known that the Fourier coefficients of any holomorphic modular form for a congruence subgroup (with algebraic coefficients) have bounded denominators. It was observed by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer that this is no longer true for modular forms for noncongruence subgroups and they pointed out that unbounded denominator property is a clear distinction between modular forms for noncongruence and congruence modular forms. It is an open question whether genuine…
A modular grid is a pair of sequences $(f_m)_m$ and $(g_n)_n$ of weakly holomorphic modular forms such that for almost all $m$ and $n$, the coefficient of $q^n$ in $f_m$ is the negative of the coefficient of $q^m$ in $g_n$. Zagier proved this coefficient duality in weights $1/2$ and $3/2$ in the Kohnen plus space, and such grids have appeared for Poincaré series, for modular forms of integral weight, and in many other situations. We give a general proof of coefficient duality for canonical row-reduced bases of spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of integral or half-integral weight for e…
In the context of arithmetic surfaces, Bost defined a generalized Arithmetic Chow Group (ACG) using the Sobolev space L^2_1. We study the behavior of these groups under pull-back and push-forward and we prove a projection formula. We use these results to define an action of the Hecke operators on the ACG of modular curves and to show that they are self-adjoint with respect to the arithmetic intersection product. The decomposition of the ACG in eigencomponents which follows allows us to define new numerical invariants, which are refined versions of the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. …
Given a prime $p\ge5$ and an integer $s\ge1$, we show that there exists an integer $M$ such that for any quadratic polynomial $f$ with coefficients in the ring of integers modulo $p^s$, such that $f$ is not a square, if a sequence $(f(1),\dots,f(N))$ is a sequence of squares, then $N$ is at most $M$. We obtain this result by reducing to the case where $f$ has an invertible dominant coefficient.
The paper investigates some aspects of the geometry and the arithmetic of a non-rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. Particular emphasis is given to the study of its L-function L(H^3,s) and the Galois representation.
We study the relationship between recent conjectures on slopes of overconvergent p-adic modular forms "near the boundary" of p-adic weight space. We also prove in tame level 1 that the coefficients of the Fredholm series of the U_p operator never vanish modulo p, a phenomenon that fails at higher level. In higher level, we do check that infinitely many coefficients are non-zero modulo p using a modular interpretation of the mod p reduction of the Fredholm series recently discovered by Andreatta, Iovita and Pilloni.
We study arithmetic distribution relations and the inverse function theorem in algebraic and arithmetic geometry, with an emphasis on versions that can be applied uniformly across families of varieties and maps. In particular, we prove two explicit versions of the inverse function theorem, the first via general distribution and separation inequalities that may be of independent interest, the second via a careful implementation of classical Newton iteration.
In this paper, we proved an arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula and the modularity of some arithmetic theta function on the modular curve $X_0(N)$ when $N$ is square free. In the process, we also construct some generalized Delta function for $Γ_0(N)$ and proved some explicit Kronecker limit formula for Eisenstein series on $X_0(N)$.
We define and investigate extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. The 'arithmetic extension groups' we introduce are extensions by groups of analytic types of the usual extension groups attached to $Ø_X$-modules over an arithmetic scheme $X$. In this paper, we focus on the first arithmetic extension group - the elements of which may be described in terms of admissible short exact sequences of hermitian vector bundles over $X$ - and we especially consider the case when $X$ is an 'arithmetic curve', namely the spectrum $\Spec Ø_K$ of the ring of integers in some number field $K$. T…
Let $p$ be a prime. We discuss $p$-adic properties of various arithmetical functions related to the coefficients of modular form and generating functions. Modular forms are considered as a tool of solving arithmetical problems. Examples of congruences between modular forms modulo $p$ and modulo $p^n$ are given, and the use of a computer for the study of modular forms is illistrated.
Suppose $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $χ$ is a Dirichlet character. We use statistical properties of modular symbols to estimate heuristically the probability that $L(E,χ,1) = 0$. Via the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this gives a heuristic estimate of the probability that the Mordell-Weil rank grows in abelian extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Using this heuristic we find a large class of infinite abelian extensions $F$ where we expect $E(F)$ to be finitely generated. Our work was inspired by earlier conjectures (based on random matrix heuristics) due to David, Fearnley, an…
We define a family of arithmetic zero cycles in the arithmetic Chow group of a modular curve X_0(N), for N>3 odd and squarefree, and identify the arithmetic degrees of these cycles as q-coefficients of the central derivative of a Siegel Eisenstein series of genus two. This parallels work of Kudla-Rapoport-Yang for Shimura curves.
This is a brief exposition of the mathematical themes that motivate the special programme at the Newton Institute in 2009. It is mostly intended for the general public having mathematical training up to the level of secondary school.
We study the homology and the Borel-Moore homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ of a quotient (called arithmetic quotient) of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ of a nonarchimedean local field of positive characteristic by an arithmetic subgroup (a special case of the general definition in Harder's article (Invent.\ Math.\ 42, 135-175 (1977)). We define an analogue of modular symbols in this context and show that the image of the canonical map from homology to Borel-Moore homology is contained in the sub $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space generated by the modular symbols. By definition, th…
The notion of a tamely ramified covering is canonical only for curves. Several notions of tameness for coverings of higher dimensional schemes have been used in the literature. We show that all these definitions are essentially equivalent. Furthermore, we prove finiteness theorems for the tame fundamental groups of arithmetic schemes.
We investigate certain finiteness questions that arise naturally when studying approximations modulo prime powers of p-adic Galois representations coming from modular forms. We link these finiteness statements with a question by K. Buzzard concerning p-adic coefficient fields of Hecke eigenforms. Specifically, we conjecture that for fixed N, m, and prime p with p not dividing N, there is only a finite number of reductions modulo p^m of normalized eigenforms on Γ_1(N). We consider various variants of our basic finiteness conjecture, prove a weak version of it, and give some numerical evidence.
Around 2000 Kudla presented conjectures about deep relations between arithmetic intersection theory, Eisenstein series and their derivatives, and special values of Rankin $L-$series. The aim of this text is to work out the details of an old unpublished draft on the second author's attempt to prove these conjectures for the case of the product of two modular curves. In part one we proved that the generating series of certain modified arithmetic special cycles is as predicted by Kudla's conjectures a modular form with values in the first arithmetic Chow group. Here we pair this generating series…
We study the $Λ$-module structure of the ordinary parts of the arithmetic cohomology groups of modular Jacobians made out of various towers of modular curves. We prove that the ordinary parts of $Λ$-adic Selmer groups coming from two different towers have "almost same" $Λ$-module structures. We also prove the cotorsionness of $Λ$-adic Tate-Shafarevich group under mild assumptions.
Our aim is to clarify the relationship between Kudla's and Bruinier's Green functions attached to special cycles on Shimura varieties of orthogonal and unitary type. These functions play a key role in the arithmetic geometry of the special cycles in the context of Kudla's program. In particular, we show that the generating series obtained by taking the differences of the two families of Green functions is a modular form with trivial holomorphic projection. Along the way, we construct a section of the Maass lowering operator for moderate growth modular forms valued in the Weil representation us…
In this paper, we derive new computational techniques for residue number systems (RNS) based Barrett algorithm (BA). The focus of the work is an algorithm that carries out the entire computation using only modular arithmetic without conversion to large integers via the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT). It also avoids the computationally expensive scaling-rounding operation required in the earlier work. There are two parts to this work. First, we set up a new BA using two constants other than powers of two. Second, a RNS based BA is described. A complete mathematical framework is described inclu…
This memoir is devoted to the study of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces. These are arithmetic counterparts, in the context of Arakelov geometry, of germs of smooth complex-analytic surfaces along a projective complex curve. Formal-analytic surfaces provide a natural framework for arithmetic algebraization theorems, old and new. Formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces admit a rich geometry which parallels the geometry of complex analytic surfaces. Notably the dichotomy between pseudoconvexity and pseudoconcavity plays a central role in their geometry. Our study of formal-analytic arithmetic surf…
Let $ρ$ denote an irreducible two-dimensional representation of $Γ_{0}(2)$. The collection of vector-valued modular forms for $ρ$, which we denote by $M(ρ)$, form a graded and free module of rank two over the ring of modular forms on $Γ_{0}(2)$, which we denote by $M(Γ_{0}(2))$. For a certain class of $ρ$, we prove that if Z is any vector-valued modular form for $ρ$ whose component functions have algebraic Fourier coefficients then the sequence of the denominators of the Fourier coefficients of both component functions of Z is unbounded. Our methods involve computing an explicit basis for $M(ρ…
