We prove an arithmetic version of a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier saying that Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors on a Hilbert modular surface are the coefficients of an elliptic modular form of weight two. Moreover, we determine the arithmetic self-intersection number of the line bundle of modular forms equipped with its Petersson metric on a regular model of a Hilbert modular surface, and study Faltings heights of arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors.
We compute the divisors of Borcherds products on integral models of orthogonal Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain an integral version of a theorem of Borcherds on the modularity of a generating series of special divisors.
In his celebrated 1998 Inventiones paper, Borcherds constructed meromorphic automorphic forms Psi(F) for arithmetic subgroups associated to even integral lattices M of signature (n,2). The input to his construction is a vector valued weakly holomorphic modular form F of weight 1 - n/2, and the resulting Borcherds form has an explicit divisor on the arithmetic quotient X = Gamma_M\ D. Most remarkably, in the neighborhood of each cusp (= rational point boundary component), there is a beautiful product formula for Psi(F), reminiscent of the classical product formula for the Dedekind eta-function.…
We study moduli spaces of O'Grady's ten-dimensional irreducible symplectic manifolds. These moduli spaces are covers of modular varieties of dimension 21, namely quotients of hermitian symmetric domains by a suitable arithmetic group. The interesting and new aspect of this case is that the group in question is strictly bigger than the stable orthogonal group. This makes it different from both the K3 and the K3^[n] case, which are of dimension 19 and 20 respectively.
We show that the values of Borcherds products on Shimura varieties of orthogonal type at certain CM points are given in terms of coefficients of the holomorphic part of weight one harmonic weak Maass forms. Furthermore, we investigate the arithmetic properties of these coefficients. As an example, we obtain an analog of the Gross-Zagier theorem on singular moduli.
The Borcherds lift for indefinite unitary groups, previously constructed by the author, is examined here in greater detail for the special case of the group U(1,1). The inputs for the lifting in this case are weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight zero, which are lifted to meromorphic modular forms on the usual complex upper half plane transforming under an arithmetic subgroup of U(1,1). In this setting, we can completely describe the Weyl-chambers involved and explicitly calculate the attached Weyl-vectors, for a family of input functions with principle part $q^{-n}$. Since these are a ba…
We study the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on arithmetic surfaces with respect to morphisms of a particular kind. We obtain upper bounds for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on minimal regular models of the modular curves associated with congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ with square free level, as well as for the modular curves X(N) and the Fermat curves with prime exponent.
In this article we improve the upper bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf of the minimal regular model for the Fermat curves $F_p$ of prime exponent.
We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.
We prove an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number of diagonal cycles on GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces in the minuscule case. This is a local problem arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for orthogonal Shimura varieties. Our formula can be viewed as an orthogonal counterpart of the arithmetic-geometric side of the arithmetic fundamental lemma proved by Rapoport-Terstiege-Zhang in the minuscule case.
We establish an arithmetic intersection theory in the framework of Arakelov geometry over adelic curves. To each projective scheme over an adelic curve, we associate a multi-homogenous form on the group of adelic Cartier divisors, which can be written as an integral of local intersection numbers along the adelic curve. The integrability of the local intersection number is justified by using the theory of resultants.
We give an explicitly computable lower bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on a large class of arithmetic surfaces. If some technical conditions are satisfied, then this lower bound is positive. In particular, these technical conditions are always satisfied for minimal arithmetic surfaces with simple multiplicities and at least one reducible fiber, but we have also used our techniques to obtain lower bounds for some arithmetic surfaces with non-reduced fibers.
In his Inventiones papers in 1995 and 1998, Borcherds constructed holomorphic automorphic forms $Ψ(F)$ with product expansions on bounded domains $D$ associated to rational quadratic spaces $V$ of signature (n,2). The input $F$ for his construction is a vector valued modular form of weight $1-n/2$ for $SL_2(Z)$ which is allowed to have a pole at the cusp and whose non-positive Fourier coefficients are integers $c_μ(-m)$, $m\ge0$. For example, the divisor of $Ψ(F)$ is the sum over $m>0$ and the coset parameter $μ$ of $c_μ(-m) Z_μ(m)$ for certain rational quadratic divisors $Z_μ(m)$ on the arith…
We give a close formula for the Néron-Tate height of tautological integral cycles on Jacobians of curves over number fields as well as a new lower bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number $\hatω^2$ of the dualizing sheaf of a curve in terms of Zhang's invariant $φ$. As an application, we obtain an effective Bogomolov-type result for the tautological cycles. We deduce these results from a more general combinatorial computation of arithmetic intersection numbers of adelic line bundles on higher self-products of curves, which are linear combinations of pullbacks of line bundles on the cu…
For several applications in the arithmetic of abelian varieties it is important to compute canonical heights. Following Faltings and Hriljac, we show how the canonical height on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve can be computed using arithmetic intersection theory on a regular model of the curve in practice. In the case of hyperelliptic curves we present a complete algorithm that has been implemented in Magma. Several examples are computed and the behavior of the running time is discussed.
We form generating series of special divisors, valued in the Chow group and in the arithmetic Chow group, on the compactified integral model of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group of signature (n-1,1), and prove their modularity. The main ingredient of the proof is the calculation of the vertical components appearing in the divisor of a Borcherds product on the integral model.
We study the arithmetic of complete intersections in projective space over number fields. Our main results include arithmetic Torelli theorems and versions of the Shafarevich conjecture, as proved for curves and abelian varieties by Faltings. For example, we prove an analogue of the Shafarevich conjecture for cubic and quartic threefolds and intersections of two quadrics.
We survey recent joint work with M. Rapoport and W. Zhang related to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups.
We give a new definition of higher arithmetic Chow groups for smooth projective varieties defined over a number field, which is similar to Gillet and Soulé's definition of arithmetic Chow groups. We also give a compact description of the intersection theory of such groups. A consequence of this theory is the definition of a height pairing between two higher algebraic cycles, of complementary dimensions, whose real regulator class is zero. This description agrees with Beilinson's height pairing for the classical arithmetic Chow groups. We also give examples of the higher arithmetic intersection…
Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for an intersection number on the arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, CM(K).T_m, where CM(K) is the zero-cycle of points corresponding to abelian surfaces with CM by a primitive quartic CM field K, and T_m is the Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors parameterizing products of elliptic curves with an m-isogeny between them. In this paper, we examine fields not covered by Yang's proof of the conjecture. We give numerical evidence to support the conjecture and point to some interesting anomalies. We compare the conjecture to both the denominators of Igusa class polyn…
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
W. Zhang's arithmetic fundamental lemma (AFL) is a conjectural identity between the derivative of an orbital integral on a symmetric space with an arithmetic intersection number on a unitary Rapoport-Zink space. In the minuscule case, Rapoport-Terstiege-Zhang have verified the AFL conjecture via explicit evaluation of both sides of the identity. We present a simpler way for evaluating the arithmetic intersection number, thereby providing a new proof of the AFL conjecture in the minuscule case.
We work with completed adelic structures on an arithmetic surface and justify that the construction under consideration is compatible with Arakelov geometry. The ring of completed adeles is algebraically and topologically self-dual and fundamental adelic subspaces are self orthogonal with respect to a natural differential pairing. We show that the Arakelov intersection pairing can be lifted to an idelic intersection pairing.
The purpose of this paper is to initiate Arakelov theory in a noncommutative setting. More precisely, we are concerned with noncommutative arithmetic surfaces. We introduce a version of arithmetic intersection theory on noncommutative arithmetic surfaces and we prove an arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem in this setup.
We introduce the positive intersection product in Arakelov geometry and prove that the arithmetic volume function is continuously differentiable. As applications, we compute the distribution function of the asymptotic measure of a Hermitian line bundle and several other arithmetic invariants.
We describe a general algorithm for computing intersection pairings on arithmetic surfaces. We have implemented our algorithm for curves over $\mathbb Q$, and we show how to use it to compute regulators for a number of Jacobians of smooth plane quartics, and to numerically verify the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for the Jacobian of the split Cartan curve of level 13, up to squares.
We give an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number of CM cycles on Lubin-Tate spaces for all levels. We prove our formula by formulating the intersection number on the infinite level. Our CM cycles are constructed by choosing two separable quadratic extensions $K_1,K_2/F$ of non-Archimedean local fields $F$. Our formula works for all cases, $K_1$ and $K_2$ can be either the same or different, ramify or unramified. As applications, this formula translate the linear Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma (linear AFL) into a comparison of integrals. This formula can also be used to recover …
This memoir is devoted to the study of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces. These are arithmetic counterparts, in the context of Arakelov geometry, of germs of smooth complex-analytic surfaces along a projective complex curve. Formal-analytic surfaces provide a natural framework for arithmetic algebraization theorems, old and new. Formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces admit a rich geometry which parallels the geometry of complex analytic surfaces. Notably the dichotomy between pseudoconvexity and pseudoconcavity plays a central role in their geometry. Our study of formal-analytic arithmetic surf…
In this paper, we obtain an explicit arithmetic intersection formula on a Hilbert modular surface between the diagonal embedding of the modular curve and a CM cycle associated to a non-biquadratic CM quartic field. This confirms a special case of the author's conjecture with J. Bruinier in \cite{BY}, and is a generalization of the beautiful factorization formula of Gross and Zagier on singular moduli. As an application, we proved the first non-trivial non-abelian Chowla-Selberg formula, a special case of Colmez conjecture.
Given the ensemble of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the three-dimensional torus (`3d arithmetic random waves'), we investigate the $1$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the nodal intersection curve against a compact regular toral surface (the `nodal intersection length'). The expected length is proportional to the square root of the eigenvalue, times the surface area, independent of the geometry. Our main finding is the leading asymptotic of the nodal intersection length variance, against a surface of nonvanishing Gauss-Kronecker curvature. The problem is closely related to the theo…
We introduce the notion of $ε$-irreducibility for arithmetic cycles meaning that the degree of its analytic part is small compared to the degree of its irreducible classical part. We will show that for every $ε>0$ any sufficiently high tensor power of an arithmetically ample hermitian line bundle can be represented by an $ε$-irreducible arithmetic divisor. Our methods of proof also allow us to study the distribution of divisors of small sections of an arithmetically ample hermitian line bundle $\overline{\mathcal{L}}$. We will prove that for increasing tensor powers $\overline{\mathcal{L}}^{\o…
In this paper we prove an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} on the Siegel moduli space of abelian surfaces, generalizing the work of Bruinier-Yang and Yang. These intersection numbers allow one to compute the denominators of Igusa class polynomials, which has important applications to the construction of genus 2 curves for use in cryptography. Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for intersection numbers on an arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, and as a consequence obtained a conjectural formula for the intersection number (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} under str…
We give a new proof the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem by using classical reductions in the theory of coherent sheaves, a direct proof in the case of the projective space and the conservation of some numerical invariants, called arithmetic Hilbert invariants, through the deformation to the projective completion of the cone. This construction lies at the intersection of deformation theory and Arakelov geometry. It provides a deformation of a Hermitian line bundle over the deformation to the normal cone.
We prove two formulas in the style of the Gross-Zagier theorem, relating derivatives of L-functions to arithmetic intersection pairings on a unitary Shimura variety. We also prove a special case of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. These results are derived from the authors' earlier results on the modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties.
PhD dissertation consists in three lines of investigation involving rational elliptic surfaces, namely 1) a study of conic bundles on these surfaces; 2) an investigation of the possible intersection numbers of two sections and 3) a theorem regarding the set of fibers whose Mordell-Weil ranks are at least 3 units higher than the generic rank of the elliptic fibration.
Around 2000 Kudla presented conjectures about deep relations between arithmetic intersection theory, Eisenstein series and their derivatives, and special values of Rankin $L-$series. The aim of this text is to work out the details of an old unpublished draft on the second author's attempt to prove these conjectures for the case of the product of two modular curves. In part one we proved that the generating series of certain modified arithmetic special cycles is as predicted by Kudla's conjectures a modular form with values in the first arithmetic Chow group. Here we pair this generating series…
Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for intersection numbers on an arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, and as a consequence obtained a conjectural formula for CM(K).G_1 under strong assumptions on the ramification in K. Yang later proved this conjecture under slightly stronger assumptions on the ramification. In recent work, Lauter and Viray proved a different formula for CM(K).G_1 for primitive quartic CM fields with a mild assumption, using a method of proof independent from that of Yang. In this paper we show that these two formulas agree, for a class of primitive quartic CM fields whic…
We present bounds for the degree and the height of the polynomials arising in some central problems in effective algebraic geometry including the implicitation of rational maps and the effective Nullstellensatz over a variety. Our treatment is based on arithmetic intersection theory in products of projective spaces and extends to the arithmetic setting constructions and results due to Jelonek. A key role is played by the notion of canonical mixed height of a multiprojective variety. We study this notion from the point of view of resultant theory and establish some of its basic properties, incl…
We establish, in the setting of Arakelov geometry over adelic curves, an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem describing the asymptotic behaviour of the metrized graded linear series of an adelic line bundle in terms of its arithmetic intersection number. We then study positivity conditions of adelic line bundles.
We develop a theory of vector-valued heights and intersections defined relative to finitely generated extensions K/k. These generalize both number field and geometric heights. When k is Q or F_p, or when a non-isotriviality condition holds, we obtain Northcott-type results. We then prove a version of the Hodge Index Theorem for vector-valued intersections, and use it to prove a rigidity theorem for polarized dynamical systems over any field.
We introduce moduli spaces of abelian varieties which are arithmetic models of Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups of signature (n-1, 1). We define arithmetic cycles on these models and study their intersection behaviour. In particular, in the non-degenerate case, we prove a relation between their intersection numbers and Fourier coefficients of the derivative at s=0 of a certain incoherent Eisenstein series for the group U(n, n). This is done by relating the arithmetic cycles to their formal counterpart from Part I via non-archimedean uniformization, and by relating the Fourier coeff…
We consider a random Gaussian ensemble of Laplace eigenfunctions on the 3D torus, and investigate the 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure (`length') of nodal intersections against a smooth 2-dimensional toral sub-manifold (`surface'). The expected length is universally proportional to the area of the reference surface, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. For surfaces contained in a plane, we give an upper bound for the nodal intersection length variance, depending on the arithmetic properties of the plane. The bound is established via estimates on the number of lattice points in spe…
This is the third of a series of papers relating intersections of special cycles on the integral model of a Shimura surface to Fourier coefficients of Hilbert modular forms. More precisely, we embed the Shimura curve over Q associated to a rational quaternion algebra into the Shimura surface associated to the base change of the quaternion algebra to a real quadratic field. After extending the associated moduli problems over Z we obtain an arithmetic threefold with a embedded arithmetic surface, which we view as a cycle of codimension one. We then construct a family, indexed by totally positive…
We compute the arithmetic intersection numbers of certain Heegner divisors on integral models of Shimura curves over Q. Our formulas generalize the formulas of Gross-Kohnen-Zagier for intersection numbers of Heegner divisors on integral models of modular curves.
In the context of arithmetic surfaces, Bost defined a generalized Arithmetic Chow Group (ACG) using the Sobolev space L^2_1. We study the behavior of these groups under pull-back and push-forward and we prove a projection formula. We use these results to define an action of the Hecke operators on the ACG of modular curves and to show that they are self-adjoint with respect to the arithmetic intersection product. The decomposition of the ACG in eigencomponents which follows allows us to define new numerical invariants, which are refined versions of the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. …
We study the nodal intersections number of random Gaussian toral Laplace eigenfunctions ("arithmetic random waves") against a fixed smooth reference curve. The expected intersection number is proportional to the the square root of the eigenvalue times the length of curve, independent of its geometry. The asymptotic behaviour of the variance was addressed by Rudnick-Wigman; they found a precise asymptotic law for "generic" curves with nowhere vanishing curvature, depending on both its geometry and the angular distribution of lattice points lying on circles corresponding to the Laplace eigenvalu…
We develop a theory of residues for arithmetic surfaces, establish the reciprocity law around a point, and use the residue maps to explicitly construct the dualizing sheaf of the surface. These are generalisations of known results for surfaces over a perfect field. In an appendix, explicit local ramification theory is used to recover the fact that in the case of a local complete intersection the dualizing and canonical sheaves coincide.
We construct natural Green forms for special cycles in orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties, in all codimensions, and, for compact Shimura varieties of type O(p,2) and U(p,1), we show that the resulting local archimedean height pairings are related to special values of derivatives of Siegel Eisentein series. A conjecture put forward by Kudla relates these derivatives to arithmetic intersections of special cycles, and our results settle the part of his conjecture involving local archimedean heights.
We prove the local Kudla--Rapoport conjecture, which is a precise identity between the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Rapoport--Zink spaces and the derivatives of local representation densities of hermitian forms. As a first application, we prove the global Kudla--Rapoport conjecture, which relates the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties and the central derivatives of the Fourier coefficients of incoherent Eisenstein series. Combining previous results of Liu and Garcia--Sankaran, we also prove cases of the arithmetic Sieg…
We consider a certain family of Kudla-Rapoport cycles on an integral model of a Shimura variety attached to a unitary group of signature (1,1), and prove that the arithmetic degrees of these cycles can be identified with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series of genus 2. The integral model in question parametrizes abelian surfaces equipped with a non-principal polarization and an action of an imaginary quadratic number ring, and in this setting the cycles are degenerate: they may contain components of positive dimension. This result can be viewed as confirma…
