In this paper we investigate arithmetic properties of automorphic forms on the group G' = GL_m/D, for a central division-algebra D over an arbitrary number field F. The results of this article are generalizations of results in the split case, i.e., D=F, by Shimura, Harder, Waldspurger and Clozel for square-integrable automorphic forms and also by Franke and Franke-Schwermer for general automorphic representations. We also compare our theorems on automorphic forms of the group G' to statements on automorphic forms of its split form using the global Jacquet-Langlands correspondence developed by Badulescu and Badulescu-Renard. Beside that we prove that the local version of the Jacquet-Langlands transfer at an archimedean place preserves the property of being cohomological.
In this paper, we prove that the arithmetic automorphic periods for $GL_{n}$ over a CM field factorize through the infinite places. This generalizes a conjecture of Shimura in 1983, and is predicted by the Langlands correspondence between automorphic representations and motives.
A cuspidal automorphic representation πof a group G is said to to be distinguished with respect to a subgroup H if the integral of f along H is nonzero for a cusp form f in the space of π. Such period integrals are related to (non)vanishing of interesting L-values and also to Langlands functoriality. This article discusses a general principle, labelled arithmeticity, which roughly states that "πis H-distinguished if and only if any Galois conjugate of πis H-distinguished." We study this principle via several examples; starting with GL(2) and leading up to more complicated situations where the …
We introduce the notion of the automorphic dual of a matrix algebraic group defined over $Q$. This is the part of the unitary dual that corresponds to arithmetic spectrum. Basic functorial properties of this set are derived and used both to deduce arithmetic vanishing theorems of ``Ramanujan'' type as well as to give a new construction of automorphic forms.
Michael HARRIS defined the arithmetic automorphic periods for certain cuspidal representations of $GL_{n}$ over quadratic imaginary fields in his Crelle paper 1997. He also showed that critical values of automorphic L-functions for $GL_{n}\times GL_{1}$ can be interpreted in terms of these arithmetic automorphic periods. In the thesis, we generalize his results in two ways. Firstly, the arithmetic automorphic periods have been defined over general CM fields. We also prove that these periods factorize as products of local periods over infinity places. Secondly, we show that critical values of a…
We prove a full global Jacquet-Langlands correspondence between GL(n) and division algebras over global fields of non zero characteristic. If $D$ is a central division algebra of dimension $n^2$ over a global field $F$ of non zero characteristic, we prove that there exists an injective map from the set of automorphic square integrable representations of the multiplicative group of $D$ to the set of automorphic square integrable representations of GL_n(F), compatible at all places with the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for unitary representations. We characterize the image of the map. …
In this paper, we describe the asymptotic distribution of Hecke eigenvalues in the Laplace eigenvalue aspect for certain families of Hecke-Maass forms on compact arithmetic quotients. Instead of relying on the trace formula, which was the primary tool in preceding studies on the subject, we use Fourier integral operator methods. This allows us to treat not only spherical, but also non-spherical Hecke-Maass forms with corresponding remainder estimates. Our asymptotic formulas are available for arbitrary simple and connected algebraic groups over number fields with cocompact arithmetic subgroups…
This paper deals with a new analytic type of vector- and Clifford algebra valued automorphic forms in one and two vector variables. For hypercomplex generalizations of the classical modular group and their arithmetic congruence subgroups Eisenstein- and Poincaré type series that are annihilated by Dirac operators, and more generally, by iterated Dirac operators on the upper half-space of $R^n$ are discussed. In particular we introduce (poly-)monogenic modular forms on hypercomplex generalizations of the classical theta group.
We develop a theory of arithmetic characteristic classes of (fully decomposed) automorphic vector bundles equipped with an invariant hermitian metric. These characteristic classes have values in an arithmetic Chow ring constructed by means of differential forms with certain log-log type singularities. We first study the cohomological properties of log-log differential forms, prove a Poincaré lemma for them and construct the corresponding arithmetic Chow groups. Then we introduce the notion of log-singular hermitian vector bundles, which is a variant of the good hermitian vector bundles introdu…
We show that the multiple divisor functions of integers in invertible residue classes modulo a prime number, as well as the Fourier coefficients of GL(N) Maass cusp forms for all N larger than 2, satisfy a central limit theorem in a suitable range, generalizing the case N=2 treated by E. Fouvry, S. Ganguly, E. Kowalski and P. Michel. Such universal Gaussian behaviour relies on a deep equidistribution result of products of hyper-Kloosterman sums.
The purpose of this semi-expository article is to give another proof of a classical theorem of Shimura on the critical values of the standard L-function attached to a Hilbert modular form. Our proof is along the lines of previous work of Harder and Hida (independently). What is different is an organizational principle based on the period relations proved by Raghuram and Shahidi for periods attached to regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations. The point of view taken in this article is that one need only prove an algebraicity theorem for the most interesting L-value, namely, the c…
If one proposes to use the theory of Eisenstein cohomology to prove algebraicity results for the special values of automorphic L-functions as in my work with Harder for Rankin-Selberg L-functions, or its generalizations as in my work with Bhagwat for L-functions for orthogonal groups and independently with Krishnamurthy on Asai L-functions, then in a key step, one needs to prove that the normalised standard intertwining operator between induced representations for p-adic groups has a certain arithmetic property. The principal aim of this article is to address this particular local problem in t…
The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism realizes the automorphic representation generated by an automorphic newform in certain cohomology of an arithmetic group. In this short note, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism as a connection morphism of certain exact sequence of G-modules, for the multiplicative group G of any quaternion algebra over a totally real field.
In the study of automorphic representations over a function field, Hitchin moduli stack and its variants naturally appear and their geometry helps the comparison of trace formulae. We give a survey on applications of this observation to a relative fundamental lemma, the arithmetic fundamental lemma and to the higher Gross-Zagier formula.
Let $d \ge 1$. We study a subspace of the space of automorphic forms of $\mathrm{GL}_d$ over a global field of positive characteristic (or, a function field of a curve over a finite field). We fix a place $\infty$ of $F$, and we consider the subspace $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{St}}$ consisting of automorphic forms such that the local component at $\infty$ of the associated automorphic representation is the Steinberg representation (to be made precise in the text). We have two results. One theorem (Theorem 16) describes the constituents of $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{St}}$ as automorphic representation an…
We study the arithmetic of division fields of semistable abelian varieties A over the rationals. The Galois group of the 2-division field of A is analyzed when the conductor is odd and squarefree. The irreducible semistable mod 2 representations of small conductor are determined under GRH. These results are used in "Paramodular abelian varieties of odd conductor," arXiv:1004.4699.
In this paper we provide a sufficient condition for a prime to be a congruence prime for an automorphic form $f$ on the unitary group $U(n,n)(A_F)$ for a large class of totally real fields $F$ via a divisibility of a special value of the standard $L$-function associated to $f$. We also study $\ell$-adic properties of the Fourier coefficients of an Ikeda lift $I_ϕ$ (of an elliptic modular form $ϕ$) on $U(n,n)(A_{\mathbf{Q}})$ proving that they are $\ell$-adic integers which do not all vanish modulo $\ell$. Finally we combine these results to show that the condition of $\ell$ being a congruence …
We investigate modular embeddings for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. First we prove some purely algebro-geometric or even topological criteria for a regular map from a smooth complex curve to a quaternionic Shimura variety to be covered by a modular embedding. Then we set up an adelic formalism for modular embeddings and apply our criteria to study the effect of abstract field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ on modular embeddings. Finally we derive that the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ operates on the dessins d'enfants defined by principal congruence subgroups of (arithmetic or non-ar…
We prove various results on the cohomology of arithmetic lattices arising from quaternion algebras over a number field with at least one complex place, including a strong restriction on the allowable weights of cuspidal cohomological automorphic forms and a conditional power saving for their multiplicities when the associated locally symmetric space is a hyperbolic 3-manifold.
We propose a relationship between the cohomology of arithmetic groups, and the motivic cohomology of certain (Langlands-)attached motives. The motivic cohomology group in question is that related, by Beilinson's conjecture, to the adjoint $L$-function at $s=1$. We present evidence for the conjecture using the theory of periods of automorphic forms, and using analytic torsion.
For triangle groups, the (quasi-)automorphic forms are known just as explicitly as for the modular group SL$(2,\bbZ)$. We collect these expressions here, and then interpret them using the Halphen differential equation. We study the arithmetic properties of their Fourier coefficients at cusps and Taylor coefficients at elliptic fixed-points --- in both cases integrality is related to the arithmeticity of the triangle group. As an application of our formulas, we provide an explicit modular interpretation of periods of 14 families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere.
In the present paper we find explicit formulas for the degrees of Heegner divisors on arithmetic quotients of the orthogonal group $\Orth(2,p)$ and for the integrals of certain automorphic Green's functions associated with Heegner divisors. The latter quantities are important in the study of the arithmetic degrees of Heegner divisors in the context of Arakelov geometry. In particular, we obtain a different proof and a generalization of results of Kudla relating these quantities to the Fourier coefficients of certain non-holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $1+p/2$ for the metaplectic group …
We consider the question that the spectrum and arithmetic of locally symmetric spaces defined by congruent arithmetical lattices should mutually determine each other. We frame these questions in the context of automorphic representations.
Let $H$ be a semisimple algebraic group, $K$ a maximal compact subgroup of $G:=H(\mathbb{R})$, and $Γ\subset H(\mathbb{Q})$ a congruence arithmetic subgroup. In this paper, we generalize existing subconvex bounds for Hecke-Maass forms on the locally symmetric space $Γ\backslash G/K$ to corresponding bounds on the arithmetic quotient $Γ\backslash G$ for cocompact lattices using the spectral function of an elliptic operator. The bounds obtained extend known subconvex bounds for automorphic forms to non-trivial $K$-types, yielding subconvex bounds for new classes of automorphic representations, a…
We prove upper bounds for Hecke-Laplace eigenfunctions on certain Riemannian manifolds of arithmetic type. The manifolds under consideration are d-fold products of 2-spheres or 3-spheres, realized as adelic quotients of quaternion algebras over totally real number fields.
This is an expository article that concerns the various related notions of algebraic idele class characters, the Groessencharaktere of Hecke, and cohomological automorphic representations of GL(1), all under the general title of algebraic Hecke characters. The first part of the article systematically lays the foundations of algebraic Hecke characters. The only pre-requisites are: basic algebraic number theory, familiarity with the adelic language, and basic sheaf theory. Observations that play a crucial role in the arithmetic of automorphic L-functions are also discussed. The second part of th…
In this paper we deal with monogenic and $k$-hypermonogenic automorphic forms on arithmetic subgroups of the Ahlfors-Vahlen group. Monogenic automorphic forms are exactly the 0-hypermonogenic automorphic forms. In the first part we establish an explicit relation between $k$-hypermonogenic automorphic forms and Maaß wave forms. In particular, we show how one can construct from any arbitrary non-vanishing monogenic automorphic form a Clifford algebra valued Maaß wave form. In the second part of the paper we compute the Fourier expansion of the $k$-hypermonogenic Eisenstein series which provide u…
We give an expository account of the theory of intertwining operators for connected reductive $p$--adic groups, and their connection with automorphic $L$--functions. Our purpose is to illustrate the relation between harmonic analysis and arithmetic. In particular, we describe how the theory of Plancherel measures allows us to compute certain local Langlands $L$--functions. In order to be more self contained, we give a brief introduction to the Langlands program. The theory of $R$--groups and elliptic representations is treated here as well. Finally, we give an example which illustrates how the…
Higher order cohomology of arithmetic groups is expressed in terms of (g,K)-cohomology. Generalizing results of Borel, it is shown that the latter can be computed using functions of (uniform) moderate growth. A higher order versions of Borel's conjecture is stated, asserting that the cohomology can be computed using automorphic forms.
We extend some results of Gun, Murty, and Rath on elliptic modular forms. We take ANY Fuchsian triangle group with a cusp and look at power series expansions in a natural parameter around that cusp. Consider the automorphic forms for such a triangle group whose power series expansions in the natural parameter have algebraic coefficients. We show that the zeros of such forms are either transcendental or are "CM." By "CM," we mean they correspond to abelian varieties with complex multiplication. This result is the first of its kind in the case of non-arithmetic groups.
In this article, we study the Chow group of the motive associated to a tempered global $L$-packet $π$ of unitary groups of even rank with respect to a CM extension, whose global root number is $-1$. We show that, under some restrictions on the ramification of $π$, if the central derivative $L'(1/2,π)$ is nonvanishing, then the $π$-nearly isotypic localization of the Chow group of a certain unitary Shimura variety over its reflex field does not vanish. This proves part of the Beilinson--Bloch conjecture for Chow groups and $L$-functions, which generalizes the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectur…
We use a form of lifted harmonic analysis to develop a two-dimensional adelic integral representation of the zeta functions of simple arithmetic surfaces. Manipulations of this integral then lead to an adelic interpretation of the so-called mean-periodicity correspondence, which is comparable to the better known automorphicity conjectures for the generic fibre.
A general structure theorem on higher order invariants is proven. For an arithmetic group, the structure of the corresponding Hecke module is determined. It is shown that the module does not contain any irreducible submodule. This explains the fact that L-functions of higher order forms have no Euler-product. Higher order cohomology is introduced, classical results of Borel are generalized and a higher order version of Borel's conjecture is stated.
The present paper is devoted to the relations between Deligne's conjecture on critical values of motivic $L$-functions and the multiplicative relations between periods of arithmetically normalized automorphic forms on unitary groups. In the first place, we combine the Ichino--Ikeda--Neal-Harris (IINH) formula -- which is now a theorem -- with an analysis of cup products of coherent cohomological automorphic forms on Shimura varieties to establish relations between certain automorphic periods and critical values of Rankin-Selberg and Asai $L$-functions of ${\rm GL}(n)\times{\rm GL}(m)$ over CM …
Let $D$ be an indefinite quaternion division algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$. We approach the problem of bounding the sup-norms of automorphic forms $ϕ$ on $D^\times(\mathbb{A})$ that belong to irreducible automorphic representations and transform via characters of unit groups of orders of $D$. We obtain a non-trivial upper bound for $\|ϕ\|_\infty$ in the level aspect that is valid for arbitrary orders. This generalizes and strengthens previously known upper bounds for $\|ϕ\|_\infty$ in the setting of newforms for Eichler orders. In the special case when the index of the order in a maximal order is …
We show that BPS jumping loci -- loci in the moduli space of string compactifications where the number of BPS states jumps in an upper semi-continuous manner -- naturally appear as Fourier coefficients of (vector space-valued) automorphic forms. For the case of $T^2$ compactification, the jumping loci are governed by a modular form studied by Hirzebruch and Zagier, while the jumping loci in K3 compactification appear in a story developed by Oda and Kudla-Millson in arithmetic geometry. We also comment on some curious related automorphy in the physics of black hole attractors and flux vacua.
We classify all primes appearing in the denominators of the Hauptmodul $J$ and modular forms for non-arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp. These primes have a congruence condition in terms of the order of the generators of the group. As a corollary we show that for the Hecke group of type $(2,m,\infty)$, the prime $p$ does not appear in the denominator of $J$ if and only if $p\equiv \pm 1\pmod m$.
We give a new proof of the finiteness of maximal arithmetic reflection groups. Our proof is novel in that it makes no use of trace formulas or other tools from the theory of automorphic forms and instead relies on the arithmetic Margulis lemma of Fraczyk, Hurtado and Raimbault.
We extend the results of Watson, which link quantum unique ergodicity on arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces with subconvexity for the triple product L function, to the case of arithmetic hyperbolic three manifolds. We work with the full unitary dual of SL(2,C), and consider QUE for automorphic forms of arbitrary fixed weight and growing spectral parameter. We obtain our results by constructing microlocal lifts of nonspherical automorphic forms using representation theory, and quantifying the generalised triple product formula of Ichino in the case of complex places.
Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.
In this paper we produce a few continuations of our previous work on partitions into fractions. Specifically, we study strictly increasing integer sequences $\{n_j\}$ such that there are partitions for all integers less than the floor of $G$, where $G=\frac{n_1}{j} + \frac{n_2}{j} + \cdots + \frac{n_{j-1}}{j}+\frac{n_j}{j}$, and all summands are distinct terms drawn from $\frac{n_1}{j} + \frac{n_2}{j} + \cdots + \frac{n_{j-1}}{j}+\frac{n_j}{j}$. We call such sequences \enquote{semicomplete}. We find that there are only three semicomplete arithmetic sequences. We also study sequences that give …
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a number field $F$, which is split at a finite place $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$, and let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $G$, which is cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at $\mathfrak{p}$. We use the cohomology of $\mathfrak{p}$-arithmetic subgroups of $G$ to attach automorphic $\mathcal{L}$-invariants to $π$. This generalizes a construction of Darmon (respectively Spieß), who considered the case $G=GL_2$ over the rationals (respectively over a totally real number field). These $\mathcal{L}$-invariants depend …
This is the second of two coupled papers estimating the mean values of multiplicative functions, of unknown support, on arithmetic progressions with large differences. Applications are made to the study of primes in arithmetic progression and to the Fourier coefficients of automorphic cusp forms.
In this article we will be dedicated some algorithms of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of two positive integers using Zeckendorf form. Such results find application in coding theory.
We investigate a question of Cooper adjacent to the Virtual Haken Conjecture. Assuming certain conjectures in number theory, we show that there exist hyperbolic rational homology 3-spheres with arbitrarily large injectivity radius. These examples come from a tower of abelian covers of an explicit arithmetic 3-manifold. The conjectures we must assume are the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and a mild strengthening of results of Taylor et al on part of the Langlands Program for GL_2 of an imaginary quadratic field. The proof of this theorem involves ruling out the existence of an irreducible two …
We discuss several arithmetic aspects of Bianchi groups, especially from a computational point of view. In particular, we consider computing the homology of Bianchi groups together with the Hecke action, connections with automorphic forms, abelian varieties, Galois representations and the torsion in the homology of Bianchi groups. Along the way, we list several open problems and conjectures, survey the related literature, presenting concrete examples and numerical data.
Physicists such as Green, Vanhove, et al show that differential equations involving automorphic forms govern the behavior of gravitons. One particular point of interest is solutions to $(Δ-λ)u=E_α E_β$ on an arithmetic quotient of the exceptional group $E_8$. We establish that the existence of a solution to $(Δ-λ)u=E_αE_β$ on the simpler space $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash SL_2(\mathbb{R})$ for certain values of $α$ and $β$ depends on nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$. Further, when such a solution exists, we use spectral theory to solve $(Δ-λ)u=E_αE_β$ on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})\ba…
Let $S$ be a closed Shimura variety uniformized by the complex $n$-ball. The Hodge conjecture predicts that every Hodge class in $H^{2k} (S, \Q)$, $k=0, \ldots, n$, is algebraic. We show that this holds for all degree $k$ away from the neighborhood $]n/3, 2n/3[$ of the middle degree. We also address the Tate conjecture and the generalized form of the Hodge conjecture and extend most of our results to Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups of any signature. The proofs make use of the recent endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of classical groups by \cite{ArthurBook,…
