In this paper we extend the unramified class field theory for arithmetic surfaces of K. Kato and S. Saito to the relative case. Let X be a regular proper arithmetic surface and let Y be the support of divisor on X. Let CH_0(X,Y) denote the relative Chow group of zero cycles and let \tilde π_1^t(X,Y)^ {ab} denote the abelianized modified tame fundamental group of (X,Y) (which classifies finite etale abelian covings of X-Y which are tamely ramified along Y and in which every real point splits completely).
THEOREM: There exists a natural reciprocity isomorphism rec: CH_0(X,Y) --> \tilde π_1^t(X,Y)^{ab}. Both groups are finite.
We give an explicitly computable lower bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on a large class of arithmetic surfaces. If some technical conditions are satisfied, then this lower bound is positive. In particular, these technical conditions are always satisfied for minimal arithmetic surfaces with simple multiplicities and at least one reducible fiber, but we have also used our techniques to obtain lower bounds for some arithmetic surfaces with non-reduced fibers.
In this article, we develop an arithmetic analogue of Fourier--Jacobi period integrals for a pair of unitary groups of equal rank. We construct the so-called Fourier--Jacobi cycles, which are algebraic cycles on the product of unitary Shimura varieties and abelian varieties. We propose the arithmetic Gan--Gross--Prasad conjecture for these cycles, which is related to central derivatives of certain Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions, and develop a relative trace formula approach toward this conjecture. As a necessary ingredient, we propose the conjecture of the corresponding arithmetic fundamental l…
We give a mathematical structure on an arithmetic surface, that has algebraic meanings over finite places and can estimate the canonical norm for a relative differential form on the arithmetic surface. This will give a lower bound for the canonical norm for a relative differential form on an arithmetic surface, which proves a Height Inequality on the arithmetic surface.
Let X be a smooth projective surface over a number field, and $f: X \to X$ an automorphism of positive topological entropy. In this paper, we construct a height function on X that behaves well relative to f and deduce some arithmetic properties of (X; f).
In the relative trace formula approach to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, we formulate a local conjecture (arithmetic transfer) in the case of an exotic smooth formal moduli space of p-divisible groups, associated to a unitary group relative to a ramified quadratic extension of a p-adic field. We prove our conjecture in the case of a unitary group in three variables.
We show the existence of group-theoretic sections of the "etale-by-geometrically abelian" quotient of the arithmetic fundamental group of hyperbolic curves over $p$-adic local fields relative to a proper and flat model which are non-geometric, i.e., which do not arise from rational points.
In a previous paper, we have defined arithmetic extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. In the present one, we introduce an arithmetic analogue of the Atiyah extension that defines an element -- the arithmetic Atiyah class -- in a suitable arithmetic extension group. If $\overline{E}$ is a hermitian vector bundle on an arithmetic scheme $X$, its arithmetic Atiyah class is an obstruction to the algebraicity of the unitary connection on the vector bundle $E_\C$ over the complex manifold $X(\C)$ that is compatible with its holomorphic structure. We develop basic properties of the ar…
We prove that at least one of the six numbers $β(2i)$ for $i=1,\dots,6$ is irrational. Here $β(s)=\sum_{k=0}^\infty(-1)^k(2k+1)^{-s}$ denotes Dirichlet's beta function, so that $β(2)$ is Catalan's constant.
Recently Conlon, Fox, and the author gave a new proof of a relative Szemerédi theorem, which was the main novel ingredient in the proof of the celebrated Green-Tao theorem that the primes contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Roughly speaking, a relative Szemerédi theorem says that if S is a set of integers satisfying certain conditions, and A is a subset of S with positive relative density, then A contains long arithmetic progressions, and our recent results show that S only needs to satisfy a so-called linear forms condition. This note contains an alternative proof of the new rel…
We study the arithmetic of the twist of the Fermat quartic defined by $X^4 + Y^4 + Z^4 = 0$ which has no $\mathbb{Q}$-rational point. We calculate the Mordell--Weil group of the Jacobian variety explicilty. We show that the degree $0$ part of the Picard group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $2$, whereas the Mordell--Weil group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $3$. Thus the relative Brauer group is non-trivial. We also show that this quartic violates the local-global property for linear determinantal representations.
Arithmetic dynamics is the study of number theoretic properties of dynamical systems. A relatively new field, it draws inspiration partly from dynamical analogues of theorems and conjectures in classical arithmetic geometry, and partly from $p$-adic analogues of theorems and conjectures in classical complex dynamics. In this article we survey some of the motivating problems and some of the recent progress in the field of arithmetic dynamics.
We construct, for imaginary quadratic number fields with class number 1, an arithmetic site of Connes-Consani type. The main difficulty here is that the constructions of Connes and Consani and part of their results strongly rely on the natural order existing on real numbers which is compatible with basic arithmetic operations. Of course nothing of this sort exists in the case of imaginary quadratic number fields with class number 1. We first define what we call arithmetic site for such number fields, we then calculate the points of those arithmetic sites and we express them in terms of the adè…
We develop a theory of arithmetic characteristic classes of (fully decomposed) automorphic vector bundles equipped with an invariant hermitian metric. These characteristic classes have values in an arithmetic Chow ring constructed by means of differential forms with certain log-log type singularities. We first study the cohomological properties of log-log differential forms, prove a Poincaré lemma for them and construct the corresponding arithmetic Chow groups. Then we introduce the notion of log-singular hermitian vector bundles, which is a variant of the good hermitian vector bundles introdu…
We use techniques of relative algebraic K-theory to develop a common refinement of the existing theories of metrized and hermitian Galois structures in arithmetic. As a first application of this very general approach, we then use it to prove several new results, and to formulate a framework of new conjectures, concerning the detailed arithmetic properties of wildly ramified Galois-Gauss sums.
The celebrated Green-Tao theorem states that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions in the primes. One of the main ingredients in their proof is a relative Szemerédi theorem which says that any subset of a pseudorandom set of integers of positive relative density contains long arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we give a simple proof of a strengthening of the relative Szemerédi theorem, showing that a much weaker pseudorandomness condition is sufficient. Our strengthened version can be applied to give the first relative Szemerédi theorem for $k$-term arithmetic progressions in…
We extend the unramified class field theory for arithmetic schemes of K. Kato and S. Saito to the tame case. Let $X$ be a regular proper arithmetic scheme and let $D$ be a divisor on $X$ whose vertical irreducible components are normal schemes. Theorem: There exists a natural reciprocity isomorphism \[ \rec_{X,D}: \CH_0(X,D) \liso \tilde π_1^t(X,D)^\ab\. \] Both groups are finite. This paper corrects and generalizes my paper "Relative K-theory and class field theory for arithmetic surfaces" (math.NT/0204330)
We develop a theory of vector-valued heights and intersections defined relative to finitely generated extensions K/k. These generalize both number field and geometric heights. When k is Q or F_p, or when a non-isotriviality condition holds, we obtain Northcott-type results. We then prove a version of the Hodge Index Theorem for vector-valued intersections, and use it to prove a rigidity theorem for polarized dynamical systems over any field.
In this paper we shall study the inverse problem relative to dynamics of the w function which is a special arithmetic function and shall get some results.
Using estimates on Hooley's $Δ$-function and a short interval version of the celebrated Dirichlet hyperbola principle, we derive an asymptotic formula for a class of arithmetic functions over short segments. Numerous examples are also given.
In this paper, we shall establish a rather general asymptotic formula in short intervals for a classe of arithmetic functions and announce two applications about the distribution of divisors of square-full numbers and integers representable as sums of two squares.
Fix coprime natural numbers $a,q$. Assuming the Prime $k$-tuple Conjecture, we show that there exist arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of Carmichael numbers, each of which lies in the reduced residue class $a$ mod $q$ and is a product of three distinct prime numbers.
In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the second moments for Hurwitz class numbers $H(4n-t^2)$ with $t$ running through a fixed congruence class modulo $3$.
This paper provides a mean value theorem for arithmetic functions $f$ defined by $$f(n)=\prod_{d|n}g(d),$$ where $g$ is an arithmetic function taking values in $(0, 1]$ and satisfying some generic conditions. As an application of our main result, we prove that the density $μ_q(n)$ (resp. $ρ_q(n)$) of normal (resp. primitive) elements in the finite field extension $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ are arithmetic functions of (non zero) mean values.
In this paper, we study moments of Hurwitz class numbers associated to imaginary quadratic orders restricted into fixed arithmetic progressions. In particular, we fix $t$ in an arithmetic progression $t\equiv m\pmod{M}$ and consider the ratio of the $2k$-th moment to the zeroeth moment for $H(4n-t^2)$ as one varies $n$. The special case $n=p^r$ yields as a consequence asymptotic formulas for moments of the trace $t\equiv m\pmod{M}$ of Frobenius on elliptic curves over finite fields with $p^r$ elements.
This survey paper is aimed to describe a relatively new branch of symbolic dynamics which we call Arithmetic Dynamics. It deals with explicit arithmetic expansions of reals and vectors that have a "dynamical" sense. This means precisely that they (semi-) conjugate a given continuous (or measure-preserving) dynamical system and a symbolic one. The classes of dynamical systems and their codings considered in the paper involve: (1) Beta-expansions, i.e., the radix expansions in non-integer bases; (2) "Rotational" expansions which arise in the problem of encoding of irrational rotations of the cir…
We investigate algebraic and arithmetic properties of a class of sequences of sparse polynomials that have binomial coefficients both as exponents and as coefficients. In addition to divisibility and irreducibility results we also consider rational roots. This leads to the study of an infinite class of integer sequences which have interesting properties and satisfy linear recurrence relations.
For relatively prime positive integers $u_0$ and $r$ and for $0\le k\le n$, define $u_k:=u_0+kr$. Let $L_n:={\rm lcm}(u_0, u_1, ..., u_n)$ and let $a, l\ge 2$ be any integers. In this paper, we show that, for integers $α\geq a$ and $r\geq \max(a, l-1)$ and $n\geq lαr$, we have $$L_n\geq u_0r^{(l-1)α+a-l}(r+1)^n.$$ Particularly, letting $l=3$ yields an improvement to the best previous lower bound on $L_n$ obtained by Hong and Kominers.
We give an explicit expression of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum which is a special case of multiple elliptic Dedekind sums introduced by Egami. We also determine the denominator of the rational part and zeros of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum.
Let f : X --> X be a dominant rational map of a projective variety defined over a global field, let d_f be the dynamical degree of f, and let h_X be a Weil height on X relative to an ample divisor. We prove that h_X(f^n(P)) << (d_f + e)^n h_X(P), where the implied constant depends only on X, h_X, f, and e. As applications, we prove a fundamental inequality a_f(P) \le d_f for the upper arithmetic degree and we construct canonical heights for (nef) divisors. We conjecture that a_f(P) = d_f whenever the orbit of P is Zariski dense, and we describe some cases for which we can prove our conjecture.
We study the arithmetic of seminormal $v$-noetherian weakly Krull monoids with nontrivial conductor which have finite class group and prime divisors in all classes. These monoids include seminormal orders in holomorphy rings in global fields. The crucial property of seminormality allows us to give precise arithmetical results analogous to the well-known results for Krull monoids having finite class group and prime divisors in each class. This allows us to show, for example, that unions of sets of lengths are intervals and to provide a characterization of half-factoriality.
Given an S-arithmetic group, we ask how much information on the ambient algebraic group, number field of definition, and set of places S is encoded in the commensurability class of the profinite completion. As a first step, we show that the profinite commensurability class of a higher rank S-arithmetic group determines the number field up to arithmetical equivalence and the places in S above unramified primes. We include applications to profiniteness questions of group invariants.
Here we initiate a program to study relationships between finite groups and arithmetic-geometric invariants in a systematic way. To do this we first introduce a notion of optimal module for a finite group in the setting of holomorphic mock Jacobi forms. Then we classify optimal modules for the cyclic groups of prime order, in the special case of weight two and index one, where class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields play an important role. Finally we exhibit a connection between the classification we establish and the arithmetic geometry of imaginary quadratic twists of modular curves of p…
We classify all torsion-free derived arithmetic Fuchsian groups of genus two by commensurability class. In particular, we show that there exist no such groups arising from quaternion algebras over number fields of degree greater than 5. We also prove some results on the existence and form of maximal orders for a class of quaternion algebras related to these groups. Using these results in conjunction with a computer program, one can determine an explicit set of generators for each derived arithmetic Fuchsian group containing a torsion-free subgroup of genus two. We show this for a number of exa…
We apply a study of orders in quaternion algebras, to the differential geometry of Riemann surfaces. The least length of a closed geodesic on a hyperbolic surface is called its systole, and denoted syspi_1. P. Buser and P. Sarnak constructed Riemann surfaces X whose systole behaves logarithmically in the genus g(X). The Fuchsian groups in their examples are principal congruence subgroups of a fixed arithmetic group with rational trace field. We generalize their construction to principal congruence subgroups of arbitrary arithmetic surfaces. The key tool is a new trace estimate valid for an arb…
