This survey paper is aimed to describe a relatively new branch of symbolic dynamics which we call Arithmetic Dynamics. It deals with explicit arithmetic expansions of reals and vectors that have a "dynamical" sense. This means precisely that they (semi-) conjugate a given continuous (or measure-preserving) dynamical system and a symbolic one. The classes of dynamical systems and their codings considered in the paper involve: (1) Beta-expansions, i.e., the radix expansions in non-integer bases; (2) "Rotational" expansions which arise in the problem of encoding of irrational rotations of the circle; (3) Toral expansions which naturally appear in arithmetic symbolic codings of algebraic toral automorphisms (mostly hyperbolic).
We study ergodic-theoretic and probabilistic properties of these expansions and their applications. Besides, in some cases we create "redundant" representations (those whose space of "digits" is a priori larger than necessary) and study their combinatorics.
We prove results on mixing and mixing rates for toral extensions of nonuniformly expanding maps with subexponential decay of correlations. Both the finite and infinite measure settings are considered. Under a Dolgopyat-type condition on nonexistence of approximate eigenfunctions, we prove that existing results for (possibly nonMarkovian) nonuniformly expanding maps hold also for their toral extensions.
We consider a general relation between fixed point stability of suitably perturbed transfer operators and convergence to equilibrium (a notion which is strictly related to decay of correlations). We apply this relation to deterministic perturbations of a class of (piecewise) partially hyperbolic skew products whose behavior on the preserved fibration is dominated by the expansion of the base map. In particular we apply the results to power law mixing toral extensions. It turns out that in this case, the dependence of the physical measure on small deterministic perturbations, in a suitable anis…
We define a partition $\mathcal{P}_0$ and a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotation ($\mathbb{Z}^2$-action defined by rotations) on a 2-dimensional torus whose associated symbolic dynamical system is a minimal proper subshift of the Jeandel-Rao aperiodic Wang shift defined by 11 Wang tiles. We define another partition $\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{U}$ and a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ whose associated symbolic dynamical system is equal to a minimal and aperiodic Wang shift defined by 19 Wang tiles. This proves that $\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{U}$ is a Markov partition for the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotation on $\math…
It has been a long standing problem to find good symbolic codings for translations on the $d$-dimensional torus that enjoy the beautiful properties of Sturmian sequences like low factor complexity and good local discrepancy properties. Inspired by Rauzy's approach we construct such codings in terms of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms that are realized by sequences of substitutions. In particular, given any exponentially convergent continued fraction algorithm, these sequences lead to renormalization schemes which produce symbolic codings of toral translations and bounded remainde…
We introduce the notion of Bohr chaoticity, which is a topological invariant for topological dynamical systems, and which is opposite to the property required by Sarnak's conjecture. We prove the Bohr chaoticity for all systems which have a horseshoe and for all toral affine dynamical systems of positive entropy, some of which don't have a horseshoe. But uniquely ergodic dynamical systems are not Bohr chaotic.
We show that the dynamical degree of an (i.i.d) random sequence of dominant, rational self-maps on projective space is almost surely constant. We then apply this result to height growth and height counting problems in random orbits.
These are lecture notes from a course in arithmetic dynamics given in Grenoble in June 2017. The main purpose of this text is to explain how arithmetic equidistribution theory can be used in the dynamics of rational maps on P^1. We first briefly introduce the basics of the iteration theory of rational maps on the projective line over C, as well as some elements of iteration theory over an arbitrary complete valued field and the construction of dynamically defined height functions for rational functions defined over \overline Q. The equidistribution of small points gives some original informati…
We formulate a general question regarding the size of the iterated Galois groups associated to an algebraic dynamical system and then we discuss some special cases of our question.
We generalized several results for the arithmetic dynamics of monomial maps, including Silverman's conjectures on height growth, dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture, and dynamical Manin-Mumford conjecture. These results are originally known for monomial maps on algebraic tori. We extend the results to arbitrary toric varieties.
We classify all post-critically finite unicritical polynomials defined over the maximal totally real algebraic extension of ${\mathbb Q}$. Two auxiliary results used in the proof of this result may be of some independent interest. The first is a recursion formula for the $n$-diameter of an interval, which uses properties of Jacobi polynomials. The second is a numerical criterion which allows one to the give a bound on the degree of any algebraic integer having all of its complex embeddings in a real interval of length less than $4$.
Arithmetic dynamics is the study of number theoretic properties of dynamical systems. A relatively new field, it draws inspiration partly from dynamical analogues of theorems and conjectures in classical arithmetic geometry, and partly from $p$-adic analogues of theorems and conjectures in classical complex dynamics. In this article we survey some of the motivating problems and some of the recent progress in the field of arithmetic dynamics.
For a dominant rational self-map on a smooth projective variety defined over a number field, Kawaguchi and Silverman conjectured that the (first) dynamical degree is equal to the arithmetic degree at a rational point whose forward orbit is well-defined and Zariski dense. We prove this conjecture for surjective endomorphisms on smooth projective surfaces. For surjective endomorphisms on any smooth projective varieties, we show the existence of rational points whose arithmetic degrees are equal to the dynamical degree. Moreover, we prove that there exists a Zariski dense set of rational points h…
In his earlier work, the author introduced a group theory question that arises in the study of iterated Galois groups of post-critically finite quadratic polynomials. In this paper, we prove the first non-trivial results on this question.
For a dominant rational self-map on a smooth projective variety defined over a number field, Shu Kawaguchi and Joseph H. Silverman conjectured that the dynamical degree is equal to the arithmetic degree at a rational point whose forward orbit is well-defined and Zariski dense. We give some examples of self-maps on product varieties and rational points on them for which the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture holds.
We count algebraic points of bounded height and degree on the graphs of certain functions analytic on the unit disk, obtaining a bound which is polynomial in the degree and in the logarithm of the multiplicative height. We combine this work with p-adic methods to obtain a lower bound of the form $cD^{n/4 - \varepsilon}$ on the degree of the splitting field of $P^{\circ n}(z)=P^{\circ n}(α)$, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree $D\geq 2$ over a number field, $P^{\circ n}$ is its $n$-th iterate and $c$ depends effectively on $P, α$ and $\varepsilon$. Our $c$ is positive for each algebraic $α$ fo…
We study dynamics of the Lattès maps in the complex plane in terms of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to the endomorphisms of the non-commutative tori. In particular, it is shown that iterations of the Lattès maps can be reduced to the dynamics of the subshifts of finite type. Using such a reduction, we calculate the zeta function of the Lattès maps.
We study one-dimensional algebraic families of pairs given by a polynomial with a marked point. We prove an "unlikely intersection" statement for such pairs thereby exhibiting strong rigidity features for these pairs. We infer from this result the dynamical André-Oort conjecture for curves in the moduli space of polynomials, by describing one-dimensional families in this parameter space containing infinitely many post-critically finite parameters.
Suppose that $f \colon X \dashrightarrow X$ is a dominant rational self-map of a smooth projective variety defined over ${\overline{\mathbf Q}}$. Kawaguchi and Silverman conjectured that if $P \in X({\overline{\mathbf Q}})$ is a point with well-defined forward orbit, then the growth rate of the height along the orbit exists, and coincides with the first dynamical degree $λ_1(f)$ of $f$ if the orbit of $P$ is Zariski dense in $X$. In this note, we extend the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture to the setting of orbits of higher-dimensional subvarieties of $X$. We begin by defining a set of arithmeti…
We study arithmetic degree of a dominant rational self-map on a smooth projective variety over a function field of characteristic zero. We see that the notion of arithmetic degree and some related problems over function fields are interpreted into geometric ones. We give another proof of the theorem that the arithmetic degree at any point is smaller than or equal to the dynamical degree. We give a sufficient condition for an arithmetic degree to coincide with the dynamical degree, and prove that any self-map has so many points whose arithmetic degrees are equal to the dynamical degree. We stud…
We describe a general program for studying the dynamics of surjective endomorphisms of algebraic varieties that are amenable to techniques from the minimal model program. We obtain density results on the pre-periodic points of surjective endomorphisms of varieties admitting an int-amplified endomorphism, and reduce certain cases of the Medvedev-Scanlon conjecture to so called Q-abelian varieties using our approach. We also provide a connection between the existence of an automorphism with positive entropy and group of connected components of a variety. In particular, we show that if $X$ is nor…
We survey some recent advances in the study of (area-preserving) flows on surfaces, in particular on the typical dynamical, ergodic and spectral properties of smooth area-preserving (or locally Hamiltonian) flows, as well as recent breakthroughs on linearization and rigidity questions in higher genus. We focus in particular on the Diophantine-like conditions which are required to prove such results, which can be thought of as a generalization of arithmetic conditions for flows on tori and circle diffeomorphisms. We will explain how these conditions on higher genus flows and their Poincare' sec…
Assuming Vojta's conjecture, we give a sufficient condition for the limit \[ \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{h_{Y}(f^{n}(x))}{h_{H}(f^{n}(x))} \] is equal to zero, where $f \colon X \longrightarrow X$ is a surjective self-morphism on a smooth projective variety $X$, $h_{H}$ is an ample height function on $X$, and $h_{Y}$ is a global height function associated with a closed subscheme $Y \subset X$ of codimension at least two. Based on this, we propose a conjecture on a sufficient condition for the limit to be zero. We point out that our conjecture implies Dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for endomor…
