We discuss analogies between the etale site of arithmetic schemes and the algebraic topology of dynamical systems. The emphasis is on Lefschetz numbers. We also discuss similarities between infinite primes in arithmetic and fixed points of dynamical systems.
In this paper we state and prove the analogous of the principal ideal theorem of algebraic number theory for the case of 3-manifolds from the point of view of arithmetic topology.
We implement the Maynard-Tao method of detecting primes in tuples to investigate small gaps between primes in arithmetic progressions, with bounds that are uniform over a range of moduli.
As the conclusion of a line of investigation undertaken in two previous papers, we compute asymptotic frequencies for the values taken by numerators of differences of consecutive Farey fractions with denominators restricted to lie in arithmetic progression.
I show that a trivial modification of a standard proof of the Roth's Theorem on triples in arithmetic progression would lead to the following Theorem: If A is a "large set" that is its elements are monotone increasing integers and the sum of reciprocals of its elements diverges then the sequence contains an arithmetic progression of length three.
We consider some asymptotic analysis for series related to the work of Hardy and Littlewood on Diophantine approximation, as well as Davenport. In particular, we expand on ideas from some previous work on arithmetic series and the RH.
We prove an asymptotic formula for squarefree in arithmetic progressions with squarefree moduli, improving previous results by Prachar. The main tool is an estimate for counting solutions of a congruence inside a box that goes beyond what can be obtained by using the Weil bound.
We formalize the arithmetic topology, i.e. a relationship between knots and primes. Namely, using the notion of a cluster C*-algebra we construct a functor from the category of 3-dimensional manifolds M to a category of algebraic number fields K, such that the prime ideals (ideals, resp.) in the ring of integers of K correspond to knots (links, resp.) in M. It is proved that the functor realizes all axioms of the arithmetic topology conjectured in the 1960's by Manin, Mazur and Mumford.
We consider moduli spaces of plane quartics marked with various structures such as Cayley octads, Aronhold heptads, Steiner complexes and Göpel subsets and determine their cohomology. This answers a series of questions of Jesse Wolfson. We also explore some arithmetic applications over finite fields.
In this note we describe weight functions that exhibit a transitional behavior between weak and strong correlation with the Liouville function. We also describe a binary problem which may be considered as an interpolation between Chowla's conjecture for two-point correlations of the Möbius function and the twin prime conjecture, in view of recent parity breaking results of K. Matomäki, M. Radziwiłł and T. Tao.
We present a list of problems in arithmetic topology posed at the June 2019 PIMS/NSF workshop on "Arithmetic Topology". Three problem sessions were hosted during the workshop in which participants proposed open questions to the audience and engaged in shared discussions from their own perspectives as working mathematicians across various fields of study. Participants were explicitly asked to provide problems of various levels of difficulty, with the goal of capturing a cross-section of exciting challenges in the field that could help guide future activity. The problems, together with reference…
By analyzing the coefficients of the power series defining the Kubota--Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-function associated to the non-trivial character of a real quadratic field, we prove a congruence of Ankeny--Artin--Chowla-type for prime power modulus. Additionally, we show how some classical congruences relating Bernoulli numbers and Wilson quotients fit naturally into the theory of the $p$-adic Riemann zeta function.
Ihara initiated to study a certain Galois representation which may be seen as an arithmetic analogue of the Artin representation of a pure braid group. We pursue the analogies in Ihara theory further, following after some issues and their inter-relations in the theory of braids and links such as Milnor invariants, Johnson homomorphisms, Magnus-Gassner cocycles and Alexander invariants, and study relations with arithmetic in Ihara theory.
We compute some arithmetic path integrals for BF-theory over the ring of integers of a totally imaginary field, which evaluate to natural arithmetic invariants associated to $\mathbb{G}_m$ and abelian varieties.
Let $f\colon\mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}_0$ be a multiplicative arithmetic function such that for all primes $p$ and positive integers $α$, $f(p^α)<p^α$ and $f(p)\vert f(p^α)$. Suppose also that any prime that divides $f(p^α)$ also divides $pf(p)$. Define $f(0)=0$, and let $H(n)=\displaystyle{\lim_{m\rightarrow\infty}f^m(n)}$, where $f^m$ denotes the $m^{th}$ iterate of $f$. We prove that the function $H$ is completely multiplicative.
These course notes are about computing modular forms and some of their arithmetic properties. Their aim is to explain and prove the modular symbols algorithm in as elementary and as explicit terms as possible, and to enable the devoted student to implement it over any ring (such that a sufficient linear algebra theory is available in the chosen computer algebra system). The chosen approach is based on group cohomology and along the way the needed tools from homological algebra are provided.
We construct a functor from the smooth 4-dimensional manifolds to the hyper-algebraic number fields, i.e. fields with non-commutative multiplication. It is proved that that the simply connected 4-manifolds correspond to the abelian extensions. We recover the Rokhlin and Donaldson's Theorems from the Galois theory of the non-commutative fields.
A. Sikora has shown results which confirm the analogy between number fields and 3-manifolds. However, he has given proofs of his results which are very different in the arithmetic and in the topological case. In this paper, we show how to provide a unified approach to the results in the two cases. For this we introduce an equivariant cohomology which satisfies a localization theorem. In particular, we obtain a satisfactory explanation for the coincidences between Sikora's formulas which leads us to clarify and to extend the dictionary of arithmetic topology.
Let $f: \mathbb{Z}_+\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$ be a polynomial with the property that corresponding to every prime $p$ there exists an integer $\ell$ such that $p\nmid f(\ell)$. In this paper, we establish some equidistributed results between the number of partitions of an integer $n$ whose parts are taken from the sequence $\{f(\ell)\}_{\ell=1}^{\infty}$ and the number of parts of those partitions which are in a certain arithmetic progression.
We introduce mod $l$ Milnor invariants of a Galois element associated to Ihara's Galois representation on the pro-$l$ fundamental group of a punctured projective line ($l$ being a prime number), as arithmetic analogues of Milnor invariants of a pure braid. We then show that triple quadratic (resp. cubic) residue symbols of primes in the rational (resp. Eisenstein) number field are expressed by mod $2$ (resp. mod $3$) triple Milnor invariants of Frobenius elements. For this, we introduce dilogarithmic mod $l$ Heisenberg ramified covering ${\cal D}^{(l)}$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$, which may be regarded…
This is an expository article that concerns the various related notions of algebraic idele class characters, the Groessencharaktere of Hecke, and cohomological automorphic representations of GL(1), all under the general title of algebraic Hecke characters. The first part of the article systematically lays the foundations of algebraic Hecke characters. The only pre-requisites are: basic algebraic number theory, familiarity with the adelic language, and basic sheaf theory. Observations that play a crucial role in the arithmetic of automorphic L-functions are also discussed. The second part of th…
We consider the interplay of point counts, singular cohomology, étale cohomology, eigenvalues of the Frobenius and the Grothendieck ring of varieties for two families of varieties: spaces of rational maps and moduli spaces of marked, degree $d$ rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We deduce as special cases algebro-geometric and arithmetic refinements of topological computations of Segal, Cohen--Cohen--Mann--Milgram, Vassiliev and others.
We investigate the Stern polynomials defined by $B_0 ( t ) =0,B_1 ( t ) =1$, and for $n \geq 2$ by the recurrence relations $B_{2n}( t) =tB_{n}( t) ,$ $B_{2n+1}( t) =B_n( t) +B_{n+1}( t) $. We prove that all possible rational roots of that polynomials are $0,-1,-1/2,-1/3$. We give complete characterization of $n$ such that $deg( B_n) = deg( B_{n+1}) $ and $deg( B_n) =deg( B_{n+1}) =deg( B_{n+2}) $. Moreover, we present some result concerning reciprocal Stern polynomials.
Those notes rest on the Samuel Eilenberg Lectures I gave at Columbia University, NY, in the fall 2022. I thank all the mathematicians who participated in their elaboration, directly or indirectly. They are meant to be published as a Springer Lecture Notes. This arXiv version is not identical with the final version.
In this note, we remark on the range in Borel's theorem on the stable cohomology of the arithmetic groups Sp(2n,Z) and SO(n,n;Z). This improves the range stated in Borel's original papers, an improvement that was known to Borel. Our main task is a technical computation involving the Weyl group action on roots and weights. This note originally appeared as the appendix to arXiv:1711.03139.
We consider the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_n$ of pairs of monic, degree $n$ polynomials whose resultant equals $1$. We relate the topology of these algebraic varieties to their geometry and arithmetic. In particular, we compute their étale cohomology, the associated eigenvalues of Frobenius, and the cardinality of their set of $\mathbb{F}_q$-points. When $q$ and $n$ are coprime, we show that the étale cohomology of $\mathcal{R}_{n/\bar{\mathbb{F}}_q}$ is pure, and of Tate type if and only if $q\equiv 1$ mod $n$. We also deduce the values of these invariants for the finite field counterparts of …
In this short note, we give two proofs of the infinitude of primes via valuation theory and give a new proof of the divergence of the sum of prime reciprocals by Roth's theorem and Euler-Legendre's theorem for arithmetic progressions.
In this note we prove that certain polynomial mappings $P_\mathfrak{g}^k(\mathbf{x}) \in \mathbf{Z}[\mathbf{x}]$ in $n$-variables obtained from simple complex Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of arbitrary rank $n \ge 1$, are exceptional.
In these lecture notes we review different aspects of the arithmetic of K3 surfaces. Topics include rational points, Picard number and Tate conjecture, zeta functions and modularity.
In this note, we study the arithmetic function $f : \mathbb{Z}_+^* \to \mathbb{Q}_+^*$ defined by $f(2^k \ell) = \ell^{1 - k}$ ($\forall k, \ell \in \mathbb{N}$, $\ell$ odd). We show several important properties about that function and then we use them to obtain some curious results involving the 2-adic valuation.
In this note, we characterize all functions $f : \mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ such that $f(x_1^2+ \cdots + x_k^2)=f(x_1)^2+ \cdots + f(x_k)^2$, where $k \geq 3$ and $x_1, \cdots, x_k$ are positive integers.
The purpose of this semi-expository article is to give another proof of a classical theorem of Shimura on the critical values of the standard L-function attached to a Hilbert modular form. Our proof is along the lines of previous work of Harder and Hida (independently). What is different is an organizational principle based on the period relations proved by Raghuram and Shahidi for periods attached to regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations. The point of view taken in this article is that one need only prove an algebraicity theorem for the most interesting L-value, namely, the c…
In this short note, we shall construct a certain topological family which contains all elliptic curves over Q and, as an application, show that this family provides some geometric interpretations of the Hasse-Weil L-function of an elliptic curve over Q whose Mordell-Weil group is of rank $\leq1$.
This note provides truncated formulae with explicit error terms to compute Euler products over primes in arithmetic progressions of rational fractions. It further provides such a formula for the product of terms of the shape $F(1/p, 1/p^s)$ when $F$ is a two-variable polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbb{C}$ and satisfying some restrictive conditions.
In this note, I study a comparison map between a motivic and étale cohomology group of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ just outside the range of Voevodsky's isomorphism theorem. I show that the property of an appropriate version of the map being an isomorphism is equivalent to certain arithmetical properties of the elliptic curve.
We contribute to the arithmetic/topology dictionary by relating asymptotic point counts and arithmetic statistics over finite fields to homological stability and representation stability over $\Cb$ in the example of configuration spaces of $n$ points in smooth varieties. To do this, we import the method of homological stability from the realm of topology into the theory of étale cohomology; in particular we give the first examples of stability of étale cohomology groups as Galois representations where the Galois actions are not already explicitly known. We then establish subexponential bounds …
This note is devoted to establish some new arithmetic properties of the generalized Genocchi numbers $G_{n , a}$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}$, $a \geq 2$). The resulting properties for the usual Genocchi numbers $G_n = G_{n , 2}$ are then derived. We show for example that for any even positive integer $n$, the Genocchi number $G_n$ is a multiple of the odd part of $n$.
In this note, assuming a variant of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, which does not exclude the existence of real zeros, we prove an asymptotic formula for the mean value of the representation function for the sum of two primes in arithmetic progressions. This is an improvement of the result of F. Rüppel in 2009, and the generalization of the result of A. Languasco and A. Zaccagnini concerning the ordinary Goldbach problem in 2012.
Let $P(a,q)$ be the least prime in the arithmetic progression $\{n\equiv a(mod\ q)\}$. In this note, when $q$ has bounded cubic part and $(a,q)=1$, we combine the Heath-Brown's method and the Burgess's bounds for L-functions to obtain $ P(a,q)\ll q^{4.5}.$
This note provides an insight to the diophantine properties of abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication over number fields. We study the fields of definition of the endomorphisms on these abelian varieties and the images of the Galois representations on their Tate modules. We illustrate our results with several explicit examples.
In this note, we apply Moriwaki's arithmetic height functions to obtain an analogue of Silverman's Specialization Theorem for families of Abelian varieties over $K$, where $K$ is any field finitely generated over ${\Q}$.
