Let K be a number field and let S be a finite set of places of K which contains all the Archimedean places. For any f(z) in K(z) of degree d at least 2 which is not a d-th power in \bar{K}(z), Siegel's theorem implies that the image set f(K) contains only finitely many S-units. We conjecture that the number of such S-units is bounded by a function of |S| and d (independently of K and f). We prove this conjecture for several classes of rational functions, and show that the full conjecture follows from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture.
We address the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture of Morton and Silverman in the case of unicritical polynomials, assuming a generalization of the $abc$-conjecture. For unicritical polynomials of degree at least five, we require only the standard $abc$-conjecture.
We extend a technique, originally due to the first author and Poonen, for proving cases of the Strong Uniform Boundedness Principle (SUBP) in algebraic dynamics over function fields of positive characteristic. The original method applied to unicritical polynomials for which the characteristic does not divide the degree. We show that many new 1-parameter families of polynomials satisfy the SUBP, including the family of all quadratic polynomials in even characteristic. We also give a new family of non-polynomial, non-Lattès rational functions that satisfies the SUBP.
Fix $d \ge 2$ and a field $k$ such that $\mathrm{char}~k \nmid d$. Assume that $k$ contains the $d$th roots of $1$. Then the irreducible components of the curves over $k$ parameterizing preperiodic points of polynomials of the form $z^d+c$ are geometrically irreducible and have gonality tending to $\infty$. This implies the function field analogue of the strong uniform boundedness conjecture for preperiodic points of $z^d+c$. It also has consequences over number fields: it implies strong uniform boundedness for preperiodic points of bounded eventual period, which in turn reduces the full conje…
We ask questions generalizing uniform versions of conjectures of Mordell and Lang and combining them with the Morton--Silverman conjecture on preperiodic points. We prove a few results relating different versions of such questions.
Given a surjective endomorphism $f: X \to X$ on a projective variety over a number field, one can define the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ of $f$ at a point $x$ in $X$. The Kawaguchi - Silverman Conjecture (KSC) predicts that any forward $f$-orbit of a point $x$ in $X$ at which the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ is strictly smaller than the first dynamical degree $δ_f$ of $f$ is not Zariski dense. We extend the KSC to sAND (= small Arithmetic Non-Density) Conjecture that the locus $Z_f(d)$ of all points of small arithmetic degree is not Zariski dense, and verify this sAND Conjecture for endomorphisms…
The Tate conjecture for divisors on varieties over number fields is equivalent to finiteness of $\ell$-primary torsion in the Brauer group. We show that this finiteness is actually uniform in one-dimensional families for varieties that satisfy the Tate conjecture for divisors -- e.g. abelian varieties and $K3$ surfaces.
The main result of this note is an effective uniform bound for the number of deformation types of certain nonisotrivial families of canonically polarized manifolds. It extends the author's earlier such bound for the classical Shafarevich Conjecture over function fields to the case of higher dimensional fibers, but without the disadvantageous iterated use of Chow or Hilbert varieties that was the core of the proofs in the earlier approaches.
We prove new mean value theorems for primes in arithmetic progressions to moduli larger than $x^{1/2}$, extending the Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem to moduli of size $x^{1/2+δ}$ which have conveniently sized divisors. The main feature of these estimates is that they are completely uniform with respect to the residue classes considered, unlike previous works on primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli.
We establish an implication between two long-standing open problems in complex dynamics. The roots of the $n$-th Gleason polynomial $G_n\in\mathbb{Q}[c]$ comprise the $0$-dimensional moduli space of quadratic polynomials with an $n$-periodic critical point. $\mathrm{Per}_n(0)$ is the $1$-dimensional moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with an $n$-periodic critical point. We show that if $G_n$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$, then $\mathrm{Per}_n(0)$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{C}$. To do this, we exhibit a $\mathbb{Q}$-rational smooth point on a projective completion of…
We investigate from a statistical perspective the arithmetic properties of the dynamics of polynomials of fixed degree and defined over the field of rational numbers. To start with, ordering their affine conjugacy classes by height, we show that their average number of rational preperiodic points is equal to zero, thereby proving a strong average version of the uniform boundedness conjecture of Morton and Silverman. Next, inspired by the analogy with the successive minima of a lattice we define the dynamical successive minima of a polynomial. Noting that these quantities are invariant under th…
In this paper, we will give an upper bound and a lower bound of the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function of projective hypersurfaces, which are uniform and explicit. These two bounds have the optimal dominant terms. As an application, we use the lower bound to get an estimate of the density of rational points with small heights in a hypersurface.
We prove uniform bounds for the Petersson norm of the cuspidal part of the theta series. This gives an improved asymptotic formula for the number of representations by a quadratic form. As an application, we show that every integer $n \neq 0,4,7 \,(\operatorname{mod}8)$ is represented as $n= x_1^2 + x_2^2 + x_3^3$ for integers $x_1,x_2,x_3$ such that the product $x_1x_2x_3$ has at most 72 prime divisors.
We study the number of primes with a given primitive root and in an arithmetic progression under the assumption of a suitable form of the generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Previous work of Lenstra, Moree and Stevenhagen has given asymptotics without an explicit error term, we provide an explicit error term by combining their work with the method of Hooley regarding Artin's primitive root conjecture. We give an application to a Diophantine problem involving primes with a given primitive root.
Using a variant of an unpublished argument due to Agol, we show that an irreducible right-angled Coxeter group on ${n \geq 3}$ vertices embeds as a thin subgroup of a uniform arithmetic lattice in an indefinite orthogonal group $\mathrm{O}(p, q)$ for some $p, q \geq 1$ satisfying $p+q=n$.
Let $k$ be a finitely generated field of characteristic $p>0$ and $X$ a smooth and proper scheme over $k$. Recent works of Cadoret, Hui and Tamagawa show that, if $X$ satisfies the $\ell$-adic Tate conjecture for divisors for every prime $\ell\neq p$, the Galois invariant subgroup $Br(X_{\overline k})[p']^{π_1(k)}$ of the prime-to-$p$ torsion of the geometric Brauer group of $X$ is finite. The main result of this note is that, for every integer $d\geq 1$, there exists a constant $C:=C(X,d)$ such that for every finite field extension $k \subseteq k'$ with $[k':k]\leq d$ and every $(\overline k/…
A reasonably complete theory of the approximation of an irrational by rational fractions whose numerators and denominators lie in prescribed arithmetic progressions is developed in this paper. Results are both, on the one hand, from a metrical and a non-metrical point of view and, on the other hand, from an asymptotic and also a uniform point of view. The principal novelty is a Khintchine type theorem for uniform approximation in this context. Some applications of this theory are also discussed.
We construct families of curves which provide counterexamples for a uniform boundedness question. These families generalize those studied previously by several authors. We show, in detail, what fails in the argument of Caporaso, Harris, Mazur that uniform boundedness follows from the Lang conjecture. We also give a direct proof that these curves have finitely many rational points and give explicit bounds for the heights and number of such points.
Let $r_k(N)$ be the largest cardinality of a subset of $\{1,\ldots,N\}$ which does not contain any arithmetic progressions (APs) of length $k$. In this paper, we give new upper and lower bounds for fractal dimensions of a set which does not contain $(k,ε)$-APs in terms of $r_k(N)$, where $N$ depends on $ε$. Here we say that a subset of real numbers does not contain $(k,ε)$-APs if we can not find any APs of length $k$ with gap difference $Δ$ in the $εΔ$-neighborhood of the set. More precisely, we show multi-dimensional cases of this result. As a corollary, we find equivalences between multi-dim…
Let $Γ$ be a centerless irreducible higher rank arithmetic lattice in characteristic zero. We prove that if $Γ$ is either non-uniform or is uniform of orthogonal type and dimension at least 9, then $Γ$ is bi-interpretable with the ring $\mathbb{Z}$ of integers. It follows that the first order theory of $Γ$ is undecidable, that all finitely generated subgroups of $Γ$ are definable, and that $Γ$ is characterized by a single first order sentence among all finitely generated groups.
