We prove uniform bounds for the Petersson norm of the cuspidal part of the theta series. This gives an improved asymptotic formula for the number of representations by a quadratic form. As an application, we show that every integer $n \neq 0,4,7 \,(\operatorname{mod}8)$ is represented as $n= x_1^2 + x_2^2 + x_3^3$ for integers $x_1,x_2,x_3$ such that the product $x_1x_2x_3$ has at most 72 prime divisors.
In this paper, we consider the relation between the simplest types of arithmetic theta series, those associated to the cycles on the moduli space $\Cal C$ of elliptic curves with CM by the ring of integers $\OK$ in an imaginary quadratic field $\kay$, on the one hand, and those associated to cycles on the arithmetic surface $\M$ parametrizing 2-dimensional abelian varieties with an action of the maximal order $O_B$ in an indefinite quaternion algebra $B$ over $\Q$, on the other. We show that the arithmetic degree of the pullback to $Cal C$ of the arithmetic theta function of weight 3/2 valued …
Our aim is to clarify the relationship between Kudla's and Bruinier's Green functions attached to special cycles on Shimura varieties of orthogonal and unitary type. These functions play a key role in the arithmetic geometry of the special cycles in the context of Kudla's program. In particular, we show that the generating series obtained by taking the differences of the two families of Green functions is a modular form with trivial holomorphic projection. Along the way, we construct a section of the Maass lowering operator for moderate growth modular forms valued in the Weil representation us…
A cubic (resp. biquadratic) theta series is a power series whose n-th coefficient is equal to 1 if n is a perfect cube (resp. fourth power) and zero otherwise. We improve on a result of Bradshaw by showing that such series is not a cubic (resp. biquadratic) algebraic number when evaluated at reciprocals of integers. The proof relies on a "nested gaps technique" for linear independence and on recent results by the author on Waring's problem for cubes and biquadrates.
We introduce a new arithmetic invariant for hermitian line bundles on an arithmetic variety. We use this invariant to measure the variation of the volume function with respect to the metric. The main result of this paper is a generalized Hodge index theorem on arithmetic toric varieties.
By adapting the work of Kudla and Millson we obtain a lifting of cuspidal cohomology classes for the symmetric space associated to GO(V) for an indefinite rational quadratic space V of even dimension to holomorphic Siegel modular forms on GSp_n(A). For n=2 we prove Thom's Lemma for hyperbolic 3-space, which together with results of Kudla and Millson imply an interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of the theta lift as period integrals of the cohomology class over certain cycles. This allows us to prove the p-integrality of the lift for a particular choice of Schwartz function for almost all…
For abelian varieties $A$, in the most interesting cohomology theories $H^* (A)$ is the exterior algebra of $H^1(A)$. In this paper we study a weak generalization of this in the case of arithmetic manifolds associated to orthogonal or unitary groups. In this latter case recall that arithmetic manifolds associated to standard unitary groups $U(p,q)$ ($p\geq q$) over a totally real numberfield have vanishing cohomology in degree $i=1, ..., q-1$ and that, following earlier works of Kazhdan and Shimura, Borel and Wallach constructed in \cite{BorelWallach} non zero degree $q$ cohomology classes. Th…
We study special cycles on integral models of Shimura varieties associated with unitary similitude groups of signature (n-1,1). We construct an arithmetic theta lift from harmonic Maass forms of weight 2-n to the arithmetic Chow group of the integral model of a unitary Shimura variety, by associating to a harmonic Maass form f a linear combination of Kudla-Rapoport divisors, equipped with the Green function given by the regularized theta lift of f. Our main result is an equality of two complex numbers: (1) the height pairing of the arithmetic theta lift of f against a CM cycle, and (2) the cen…
In this monograph, we lay some foundations of a theory of infinite dimensional Euclidean lattices - and more generally, of infinite dimensional Hermitian vector bundles over some "arithmetic curve" ${\rm Spec}\,\mathcal{O}_K$ attached to the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of some number field $K$ - with a view towards applications to transcendence theory and Diophantine geometry. In the first chapters of this monograph, we study the properties of the invariant $h^0_θ(\overline{E})$ attached to some Euclidean lattice $\overline{E}:= (E, \Vert.\Vert)$, defined by the expression $$h^0_θ(\overli…
Suppose l=2m+1, m>0. We introduce m "theta-series", [1],...,[m], in Z/2[[x]]. It has been conjectured that the n for which the coefficient of x^n in 1/[i] is 1 form a set of density 0. This is probably always false, but in certain cases, for n restricted to certain arithmetic progressions, it is true. We prove such zero-density results using the theory of modular forms, and speculate about what may be true in general.
It is proved that the theta series of an even lattice whose level is a power of a prime $\ell$ is congruent modulo $\ell$ to an elliptic modular form of level~1. The proof uses arithmetic and algebraic properties of lattices rather than methods from the theory of modular forms. The methods presented here may therefore be especially pleasing to those working in the theory of quadratic forms, and they admit generalizations to more general types of theta series as they occur e.g. in the theory of Siegel or Hilbert modular forms.
This article describes results of joint work with Michael Rapoport and Tonghai Yang. First, we construct an modular form ϕ(τ) of weight 3/2 valued in the arithmetic Chow group of the arithmetic surface M attached toa Shimura curve over Q. The q-expansion of this function is an analogue of the Hirzebruch-Zagier generating function for the cohomology classes of curves on a Hilbert modular surface. This`arithmetic theta function' is used to define an `arithmetic theta lift' from modular forms of weight 3/2 to the arithmetic Chow group of M. For integers t_1 and t_2 with t_1t_2 not a square, the (…
The Weil representation discovered by Andre Weil plays an important role in the study of the tranformation properties of theta series. In this paper, we define the Weil-Schroedinger representation of the Jacobi group and prove that the theta series associated with the Weil-Schroedinger representation is a Jacobi form with respect to a suitable arithmetic subgroup of the Jacobi modular group.
We prove an upper bound for the length of an arithmetic progression represented by an irreducible integral binary quadratic form or a norm form, which depends only on the form and the progression's common difference. For quadratic forms, this improves significantly upon an earlier result of Dey and Thangadurai.
Let $X$ be a subvariety of dimension n of the projective space over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and $H_{norm}(X;D)$ the normalized arithmetic Hilbert function of $X$ introduced by Philippon and Sombra. We show that this function admits the following asymptotic expansion $H_{norm}(X;D) = \frac{\widehat{h}(X)}{(n + 1)!}D^{n+1} + o(D^{n+1})$ where $\widehat{h}(X)$ is the normalized height of $X$. This gives a positive answer to a question raised by Philippon and Sombra.
We study the space of vector valued theta functions for the Weil representation of a positive definite even lattice of rank two with fundamental discriminant. We work out the relation of this space to the corresponding scalar valued theta functions of weight one and determine an orthogonal basis with respect to the Petersson inner product. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for the Petersson norms of the elements of this basis.
We improve upon the local bound in the depth aspect for sup-norms of newforms on $D^\times$ where $D$ is an indefinite quaternion division algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$. Our sup-norm bound implies a depth-aspect subconvexity bound for $L(1/2, f \times θ_χ)$, where $f$ is a (varying) newform on $D^\times$ of level $p^n$, and $θ_χ$ is an (essentially fixed) automorphic form on $\mathrm{GL}_2$ obtained as the theta lift of a Hecke character $χ$ on a quadratic field. For the proof, we augment the amplification method with a novel filtration argument and a recent counting result proved by the second-na…
Let $g \geq 2$. A real number is said to be g-normal if its base g expansion contains every finite sequence of digits with the expected limiting frequency. Let ϕdenote Euler's totient function, let σbe the sum-of-divisors function, and let λbe Carmichael's lambda-function. We show that if f is any function formed by composing ϕ, σ, or λ, then the number \[ 0. f(1) f(2) f(3) \dots \] obtained by concatenating the base g digits of successive f-values is g-normal. We also prove the same result if the inputs 1, 2, 3, \dots are replaced with the primes 2, 3, 5, \dots. The proof is an adaptation of …
The summation arithmetic functions with asymptotically independent summands are studied in the paper. We prove statements about the condition under which the summation arithmetic functions have asymptotically independent summands. It is also prove that the limiting distribution of the summation arithmetic function with asymptotically independent summands is normal under certain conditions for summands of the summation arithmetic function.
We use superconnections to define and study some natural differential forms on period domains $\mathbb{D}$ that parametrize polarized Hodge structures of given type on a rational quadratic vector space $V$. These forms depend on a choice of vectors $v_1,\ldots,v_r \in V$ and have a Gaussian shape that peaks on the locus where $v_1,\ldots,v_r$ become Hodge classes. We show that they can be rescaled so that one can form theta series by summing over a lattice $L^r \subset V^r$. These series define differential forms on arithmetic quotients $Γ\backslash \mathbb{D}$. We compute their cohomology cla…
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical numb…
Zagier proved that the traces of singular moduli, i.e., the sums of the values of the classical j-invariant over quadratic irrationalities, are the Fourier coefficients of a modular form of weight 3/2 with poles at the cusps. Using the theta correspondence, we generalize this result to traces of CM values of (weakly holomorphic) modular functions on modular curves of arbitrary genus. We also study the theta lift for the weight 0 Eisenstein series for SL(2,Z) and realize a certain generating series of arithmetic intersection numbers as the derivative of Zagier's Eisenstein series of weight 3/2.…
Let A={a_s+n_sZ}_{s=1}^k be a finite system of arithmetic sequences which forms an m-cover of Z (i.e., every integer belongs at least to m members of A). In this paper we show the following sharp result: For any positive integers m_1,...,m_k and theta in [0,1), if there is a subset I of {1,...,k} such that the fractional part of sum_{s in I}m_s/n_s is theta, then there are at least 2^m such subsets of {1,...,k}. This extends an earlier result of M. Z. Zhang and an extension by Z. W. Sun. Also, we generalize the above result to m-covers of the integral ring of any algebraic number field with a …
We give a mathematical structure on an arithmetic surface, that has algebraic meanings over finite places and can estimate the canonical norm for a relative differential form on the arithmetic surface. This will give a lower bound for the canonical norm for a relative differential form on an arithmetic surface, which proves a Height Inequality on the arithmetic surface.
