We study when Taylor resolutions of monomial ideals are minimal. We consider monomial ideals with linear quotients. In particular, we determine precisely the stable ideals and the monomial ideals with linear resolutions having the miminal Taylor resolutions.
We give a comparison between the Poincare series of two monomial rings: $R=A/I$ and $R_q=A/I_q$ where $I_q$ is a monomial ideal generated by the $q$'th power of monomial generators of $I$. We compute the Poincare series for a class of monomial rings with minimal Taylor resolution. The paper was produced during Pragmatic 2011.
We use the lcm-lattice of a monomial ideal to study its minimal free resolutions. A new concept called a Taylor basis of a minimal free resolution is introduced and then used throughout the paper. We give a method of constructing minimal free resolutions of a monomial ideal from its lcm-lattice, which is called the atomic lattice resolution theory. Some applications of this theory is given. As the main application, we rewrite the theory of poset resolutions, and we obtain an approximation formula for minimal free resolutions of all monomial ideals.
The quotient bases for zero-dimensional ideals are often of interest in the investigation of multivariate polynomial interpolation, algebraic coding theory, and computational molecular biology, etc. In this paper, we discuss the properties of zero-dimensional ideals with unique monomial quotient bases, and verify that the vanishing ideals of Cartesian sets have unique monomial quotient bases. Furthermore, we reveal the relation between Cartesian sets and the point sets with unique associated monomial quotient bases.
In [MMR], Michałek--Miró-Roig give a beautiful geometric characterization of Artinian quotients by ideals generated by quadratic or cubic monomials, such that the multiplication map by a general linear form fails to be injective in the first nontrivial degree. Their work was motivated by conjectures of Ilardi and Mezzetti-Miró-Roig-Ottaviani, connecting the failure to Laplace equations and classical results of Togliatti on osculating planes. We study quotients by quadratic monomial ideals, explaining failure of the Weak Lefschetz Property for some cases not covered by [MMR].
We study basic properties of monomial ideals with linear quotients. It is shown that if the monomial ideal $I$ has linear quotients, then the squarefree part of $I$ and each component of $I$ as well as $\mm I$ have linear quotients, where $\mm$ is the graded maximal ideal of the polynomial ring. As an analogy to the Rearrangement Lemma of Björner and Wachs we also show that for a monomial ideal with linear quotients the admissible order of the generators can be chosen degree increasingly. As a generalization of the facet ideal of a forest, we define monomial ideals of forest type and show that…
A weaker form of the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is proven for two classes of monomial ideals: quadratic monomial ideals and squarefree monomial ideals with sufficiently many variables relative to the Krull dimension. It is also shown that tensor products, as well as Stanley-Reisner ideals of certain unions, satisfy the multiplicity conjecture if all the components do. Conditions under which the bounds are achieved are also studied.
Let $S=\Bbbk[x_1,..., x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ and $I$ a monomial ideal of $S$. It is well known that the Poincaré series of $\Bbbk$ over $S/I$ is rational. We describe the coefficients of the denominator of the series and study the multigraded homotopy Lie algebra of $S/I$.
A homogeneous set of monomials in a quotient of the polynomial ring $S:=F[x_1, \..., x_n]$ is called Gotzmann if the size of this set grows minimally when multiplied with the variables. We note that Gotzmann sets in the quotient $R:=F[x_1, \..., x_n]/(x_1^a)$ arise from certain Gotzmann sets in $S$. Then we partition the monomials in a Gotzmann set in $S$ with respect to the multiplicity of $x_i$ and show that if the growth of the size of a component is larger than the size of a neighboring component, then this component is a multiple of a Gotzmann set in $F[x_1, \..., x_{i-1}, x_{i+1}, \...,x…
In this paper, we extend constructions and results for the Taylor complex to the generalized Taylor complex constructed by Herzog. We construct an explicit DG-algebra structure on the generalized Taylor complex and extend a result of Katthän on quotients of the Taylor complex by DG-ideals. We introduce a generalization of the Scarf complex for families of monomial ideals, and show that this complex is always a direct summand of the minimal free resolution of the sum of these ideals. We also give an example of an ideal where the generalized Scarf complex strictly contains the standard Scarf com…
When a monomial ideal has linear quotients with respect to an admissible order of increasing support-degree, we provide two proofs of different flavors to show that it is componentwise support-linear. We also introduce the variable decomposable monomial ideals. In squarefree case, these ideals correspond to the vertex decomposable simplicial complexes. We study the relationships of the variable decomposable ideals with weakly polymatroidal ideals, weakly stable ideals and ideals with linear quotients. We also investigate the componentwise properties of all these ideals.
We investigate monomial labellings on cell complexes, giving a minimal cellular resolution of the ideal generated by these monomials, and such that the associated quotient ring is Cohen-Macaulay. We introduce a notion of such a labelling being maximal. There is only a finite number of maximal labellings for each cell complex, and we classify these for trees, partly for subdivisions of polygons, and for some classes of selfdual polytopes.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition on a homogeneous polynomial ideal for its Taylor complex to be exact. Then we give a combinatorial construction of a minimal resolution for ideals satisfying the above condition (in particular for monomial ideals).
All powers of lexsegment ideals with linear resolution (equivalently, with linear quotients) have linear quotients with respect to suitable orders of the minimal monomial generators. For a large subclass of the lexsegment ideals the corresponding Rees algebra has a quadratic Gröbner basis, thus it is Koszul. We also find other classes of monomial ideals with linear quotients whose powers have linear quotients too.
The Taylor resolution is a fundamental object in the study of free resolutions over the polynomial ring, due to its explicit formula, cellular/combinatorial structure, and applicability to any and all monomial ideals. This paper generalizes the Taylor resolution to complete intersection rings via the Eisenbud--Shamash construction.
We prove that a monomial ideal $I$ generated in a single degree, is polymatroidal if and only if it has linear quotients with respect to the lexicographical ordering of the minimal generators induced by every ordering of variables. We also conjecture that the polymatroidal ideals can be characterized with linear quotients property with respect to the reverse lexicographical ordering of the minimal generators induced by every ordering of variables. We prove our conjecture in many special cases.
Let $G$ be a finite 2-group and $K$ be a field satisfying that (i) $\fn{char}K\ne 2$, and (ii) $\sqrt{a}\in K$ for any $a\in K$. If $G$ acts on the rational function field $K(x,y,z)$ by monomial $K$-automorphisms, then the fixed field $K(x,y,z)^G$ is rational (= purely transcendental) over $K$. Applications of this theorem will be given.
We study the deformation theory of quotients of polynomial rings by quadratic monomial ideals. More precisely we compute the first cotangent cohomology module of such rings. We also give a criterion for vanishing of second cotangent cohomology module.
We give an affirmative answer to a question due to J. He and A. Van Tuyl, proving that the arithmetical rank of a special monomial ideal equals to the projective dimension of corresponding quotient module.
We show that the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the canonical or a deficiency module of the quotient of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal is bounded by its dimension.
Let S be a polynomial ring in n variables, over an arbitrary field. We give the total, graded, and multigraded Betti numbers of S/M, for every monomial ideal M in S. We also give an explicit characterization of all monomial ideals M in S for which the quotient S/M has projective dimension n.
Every artinian quotient of $K[x,y]$ has the strong Lefschetz property if $K$ is a field of characteristic zero or is an infinite field whose characteristic is greater than the regularity of the quotient. We improve this bound in the case of monomial ideals. Using this we classify when both bounds are sharp. Moreover, we prove that the artinian quotient of a monomial ideal in $K[x,y]$ always has the strong Lefschetz property, regardless of the characteristic of the field, exactly when the ideal is lexsegment. As a consequence we describe a family of non-monomial complete intersections that alwa…
Let $I$ be a square-free monomial ideal $I$ of projective dimension one. Starting with the Taylor complex on the generators of $I^r$, we use Discrete Morse theory to describe a CW complex that supports a minimal free resolution of $I^r$. To do so, we concretely describe the acyclic matching on the faces of the Taylor complex.
For a multidegree t in N^n, E.Miller has defined a category of positively t-determined modules over the polynomial ring S in n variables. We consider the Auslander-Reiten translate, Na_t, on the (derived) category of such modules. A monomial ideal I is positively t-determined if every generator x^a has a \leq t. We compute the multigraded cohomology- and betti spaces of Na_t^k(S/I) for every iterate k, and also the S-module structure of these cohomology modules. This comprehensively generalizes results of Hochster and Gräbe on local cohomology of Stanley-Reisner rings.
For a monomial ideal $I$, we consider the $i$th homological shift ideal of $I$, denoted by $\text{HS}_i(I)$, that is, the ideal generated by the $i$th multigraded shifts of $I$. Some algebraic properties of this ideal are studied. It is shown that for any monomial ideal $I$ and any monomial prime ideal $P$, $\text{HS}_i(I(P))\subseteq \text{HS}_i(I)(P)$ for all $i$, where $I(P)$ is the monomial localization of $I$. In particular, we consider the homological shift ideal of some families of monomial ideals with linear quotients. For any $\textbf{c}$-bounded principal Borel ideal $I$ and for the …
In this work a combinatorial approach towards the weak Lefschetz property is developed that relates this property to enumerations of signed perfect matchings as well as to enumerations of signed families of non-intersecting lattice paths in certain triangular regions. This connection is used to study Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. Extending a main result in the recent memoir [Boij, Migliore, Miró-Roig, Nagel, Zanello], we completely classify the quotients of type two that have the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. We also derive resu…
We show that for every positive integer R there exist monomial ideals generated in degree two, with linear syzygies, and regularity of the quotient equal to R. Such examples can not be found among Gorenstein ideals since the regularity of their quotients is at most four. We also show that for most monomial ideals generated in degree two and with linear syzygies the regularity grows at most doubly logarithmically in the number of variables.
Let R be the quotient of a polynomial ring over a field k by an ideal generated by monomials. We derive a formula for the multigraded Poincare' series of R, i.e., the generating function for the ranks of the modules in a minimal multigraded free resolution of k over R. The formula can be expressed in terms of the homology of lower intervals in a certain lattice associated to the minimal set of generators for the ideal.
If $I$ is a monomial ideal with linear quotients, then it has componentwise linear quotients. However, the converse of this statement is an open question. In this paper, we provide two classes of ideals for which the converse of this statement holds. First class is the componentwise polymatroidal ideals in $K[x,y]$ and the second one is the componentwise polymatroidal ideals with strong exchange property.
Let $\Bbbk$ be a field and let $I$ be a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $Q=\Bbbk[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. In her thesis, Taylor introduced a complex which provides a finite free resolution for $Q/I$ as a $Q$-module. Later, Gemeda constructed a differential graded structure on the Taylor resolution. More recently, Avramov showed that this differential graded algebra admits divided powers. We generalize each of these results to monomial ideals in a skew polynomial ring $R$. Under the hypothesis that the skew commuting parameters defining $R$ are roots of unity, we prove as an application that as …
Given a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over a field, we define the generalized Newton complementary dual of the given ideal. We show good properties of such duals including linear quotients and isomorphisms between the special fiber rings. We construct the cellular free resolutions of duals of strongly stable ideals generated in the same degree. When the base ideal is generated in degree two, we provide an explicit description of cellular free resolution of the dual of a compatible generalized stable ideal.
Let $G$ be a simple finite graph. A famous theorem of Dirac says that $G$ is chordal if and only if $G$ admits a perfect elimination order. It is known by Fröberg that the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ has a linear resolution if and only if the complementary graph $G^c$ of $G$ is chordal. In this article, we discuss some algebraic consequences of Dirac's theorem in the theory of homological shift ideals of edge ideals. Recall that if $I$ is a monomial ideal, $\mbox{HS}_k(I)$ is the monomial ideal generated by the $k$th multigraded shifts of $I$. We prove that $\mbox{HS}_1(I)$ has linear quotients, …
Let S be a polynomial ring in n variables over a field, and let M be a monomial ideal of S. We introduce a new invariant, called the order of dominance of S/M, denoted odom(S/M), which has many similarities with the codimension of S/M. We use this order of dominance to characterize the class of Scarf ideals that are Cohen-Macaulay, and also to characterize when the Taylor resolution is minimal. We also show that odom(S/M) has the following properties: (i) codim(S/M) <= odom(S/M) <= pd(S/M). (ii) pd(S/M)=n if and only if odom(S/M)=n. (iii) pd(S/M)=1 if and only if odom(S/M)=1. (iv) If odom(S/M)…
We will describe how we can identify the structure of the Koszul algebra for trivariate monomial ideals from minimal free resolutions. We use recent work of L. Avramov, where he classifies the behavior of Bass numbers of embedding codepth 3 commutative local rings. His classification relies on a corresponding classification of their respective Koszul algebras, which is comprised of 5 categories. Using Avramov's classification of the Koszul algebra, along with their respective Bass series we will learn how to identify the Koszul algebra structure by inspecting the minimal free resolution of the…
We describe the Taylor and Lyubeznik resolutions as simplicial resolutions, and use them to show that the Scarf complex of a monomial ideal is the intersection of all its minimal free resolutions.
We introduce a construction, called linearization, that associates to any monomial ideal $I$ an ideal $\mathrm{Lin}(I)$ in a larger polynomial ring. The main feature of this construction is that the new ideal $\mathrm{Lin}(I)$ has linear quotients. In particular, since $\mathrm{Lin}(I)$ is generated in a single degree, it follows that $\mathrm{Lin}(I)$ has a linear resolution. We investigate some properties of this construction, such as its interplay with classical operations on ideals, its Betti numbers, functoriality and combinatorial interpretations. We moreover introduce an auxiliary const…
We characterize componentwise linear monomial ideals with minimal Taylor resolution and consider the lower bound for the Betti numbers of componentwise linear ideals.
