Every artinian quotient of $K[x,y]$ has the strong Lefschetz property if $K$ is a field of characteristic zero or is an infinite field whose characteristic is greater than the regularity of the quotient. We improve this bound in the case of monomial ideals. Using this we classify when both bounds are sharp. Moreover, we prove that the artinian quotient of a monomial ideal in $K[x,y]$ always has the strong Lefschetz property, regardless of the characteristic of the field, exactly when the ideal is lexsegment. As a consequence we describe a family of non-monomial complete intersections that always have the strong Lefschetz property.
We study the weak Lefschetz property of a class of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup generated by four natural numbers. We show that these algebras have the weak Lefschetz property whenever the initial degree of their defining ideal is small.
Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is grea…
We study the weak Lefschetz property of artinian Gorenstein algebras and in particular of artinian complete intersections. In codimension four and higher, it is an open problem whether all complete intersections have the weak Lefschetz property. For a given artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ we ask what linear forms are Lefschetz elements for this particular algebra, i.e., which linear forms $\ell$ give maximal rank for all the multiplication maps $\times \ell: [A]_i \longrightarrow [A]_{i+1}$. This is a Zariski open set and its complement is the \emph{non-Lefschetz locus}. For monomial complete …
We introduce a method for studying the Lefschetz properties for $k[x,y]$-modules based on the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma. In particular, we prove that certain modules over Artinian Clements-Lindström rings in characteristic zero have the strong Lefschetz property. In particular, we show that every homogeneous idea in a Clements-Lindström ring of embedding dimension two has the strong Lefschetz property. As an application, we study the strong Lefschetz property of type two monomial ideals of codimension three.
We study the problem of whether an arbitrary codimension three graded artinian Gorenstein algebra has the Weak Lefschetz Property. We reduce this problem to checking whether it holds for all compressed Gorenstein algebras of odd socle degree. In the first open case, namely Hilbert function (1,3,6,6,3,1), we give a complete answer in every characteristic by translating the problem to one of studying geometric aspects of certain morphisms from $\mathbb P^2$ to $\mathbb P^3$, and Hesse configurations in $\mathbb P^2$.
It has been conjectured that {\it all} graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three have the weak Lefschetz property over a field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the weak Lefschetz property of associated graded algebras $A$ of the Apéry set of $M$-pure symmetric numerical semigroups generated by four natural numbers. In 2010, Bryant proved that these algebras are graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three. In a recent article, Guerrieri showed that if $A$ is not a complete intersection, then $A$ is of form $A=R/I$ with $R=K[x,y,z]$ and \begin{align*} I…
We deal with the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) for Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebras of codimension $3.$ We prove that many Gorenstein sequences force the WLP for such algebras. Moreover for every Gorenstein sequence $H$ of codimension 3 we found several Gorenstein Betti sequences compatible with $H$ which again force the WLP. Finally we show that for every Gorenstein Betti sequence the general Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebra with such Betti sequence has the WLP.
We prove the strong Lefschetz property for certain complete intersections defined by products of linear forms, using a characterization of the strong Lefschetz property in terms of central simple modules.
We introduce a general technique for decomposing monomial algebras which we use to study the Lefschetz properties. We apply our technique to various classes of algebras, including monomial almost complete intersections and Gorenstein algebras. In particular, we prove that Gorenstein codimension three algebras arising from numerical semigroups have the strong Lefschetz property. We also study the reverse of the splitting operation -- a gluing operation -- which gives a way to construct monomial algebras with the Lefschetz properties.
In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. We prove also some strong Lefschetz properties for the same kind of Artinian algebras in higher codimensions. Moreover, we analyze some loci that come naturally into the picture of "special" Artinian algebras: for them, we give some geometric descriptions and show a connection between the non emptiness of the so-called non-Lefschetz locus in degree $1$ and the "lifting" of…
We determine the class of Hilbert series H so that if M is a finitely generated zero-dimensional R-graded module with the strong Lefschetz property, then the tensor product of M and k[y]/(y^m) has the strong Lefschetz property for y an indeterminate and all positive integers m if and only if the Hilbert series of M is in H. Given two finite graded R-modules M and N with the strong Lefschetz property, we determine sufficient conditions in order that the tensor product of M and N has the strong Lefschetz property.
In this paper we classify the monomial complete intersection algebras, in two variables, and of positive characteristic, which has the strong Lef- schetz property. Together with known results, this gives a complete classi- fication of the monomial complete intersections with the strong Lefschetz property.
In this paper, we study the dependence of the weak Lefschetz property of algebras defined by a special class of monomials ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficient in a field, to the characteristic of the base field.
We give an alternate proof for a theorem of Migliore and Nagel. In particular, we show that if $\mathcal H$ is an SI-sequence, then the collection of Betti diagrams for all Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras with the weak Lefschetz property and Hilbert function $\mathcal H$ has a unique largest element.
The weak and strong Lefschetz properties are two basic properties that Artinian algebras may have. Both Lefschetz properties may vary under small perturbations or changes of the characteristic. We study these subtleties by proposing a systematic way of deforming a monomial ideal failing the weak Lefschetz property to an ideal with the same Hilbert function and the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we lift a family of Artinian monomial ideals to finite level sets of points in projective space with the property that a general hyperplane section has the weak Lefschetz property in almost all…
Deciding the presence of the weak Lefschetz property often is a challenging problem. In this work an in-depth study is carried out in the case of Artinian monomial ideals with four generators in three variables. We use a connection to lozenge tilings to describe semistability of the syzygy bundle of such an ideal, to determine its generic splitting type, and to decide the presence of the weak Lefschetz property. We provide results in both characteristic zero and positive characteristic.
We use Macaulay's inverse system to study the Hilbert series for almost complete intersections generated by uniform powers of general linear forms. This allows us to give a classification of the Weak Lefschetz property for these algebras, settling a conjecture by Migliore, Miró-Roig, and Nagel.
We prove that a sequence $h$ of non-negative integers is the Hilbert function of some Artinian Gorenstein algebra with the strong Lefschetz property if and only if it is an SI-sequence. This generalizes the result by T. Harima which characterizes the Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the weak Lefschetz property. We also provide classes of Artinian Gorenstein algebras obtained from the ideal of points in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that some of their higher Hessians have non-vanishing determinants. Consequently, we provide families of such algebras satisfying the SLP.
We determine a sharp lower bound for the Hilbert function in degree $d$ of a monomial algebra failing the weak Lefschetz property over a polynomial ring with $n$ variables and generated in degree $d$, for any $d\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$. We consider artinian ideals in the polynomial ring with $n$ variables generated by homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ invariant under an action of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}$, for any $n\geq 3$ and any $d\geq 2$. We give a complete classification of such ideals in terms of the weak Lefschetz property depending on the action.
In this paper, we study the strong Lefschetz property of artinian complete intersection ideals generated by products of linear forms. We prove the strong Lefschetz property for a class of such ideals with binomial generators.
In [MMR], Michałek--Miró-Roig give a beautiful geometric characterization of Artinian quotients by ideals generated by quadratic or cubic monomials, such that the multiplication map by a general linear form fails to be injective in the first nontrivial degree. Their work was motivated by conjectures of Ilardi and Mezzetti-Miró-Roig-Ottaviani, connecting the failure to Laplace equations and classical results of Togliatti on osculating planes. We study quotients by quadratic monomial ideals, explaining failure of the Weak Lefschetz Property for some cases not covered by [MMR].
It is known that graded cyclic modules over $S=K[x,y]$ have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). This is not true for non-cyclic modules over $S$. The purpose of this note is to study which conditions on $S$-modules ensure the WLP. We give an algorithm to test the WLP for graded modules with fixed Hilbert function. In particular, we prove that indecomposable graded modules over $S$ with the Hilbert function $(h_0,h_1)$ have the WLP.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a standard graded Artinian ring defined by an m-full ideal, to have the weak Lefschetz property in terms of graded Betti numbers. This is a generalization of a theorem of Wiebe for componentwise linear ideals. We also prove that the class of componentwise linear ideals and that of completely m-full ideals coincide in characteristic zero and in positive characteristic, with the assumption that the generic initial ideal w.r.t. the graded reverse lexicographic order is stable.
In 2012, Migliore, the first author, and Nagel conjectured that, for all $n\geq 4$, the artinian ideal $I=(L_0^d,\ldots,L_{2n+1}^d) \subset R=k[x_0,\ldots,x_{2n}]$ generated by the $d$-th powers of $2n+2$ general linear forms fails to have the weak Lefschetz property if and only if $d>1$. This paper is entirely devoted to prove partially this conjecture. More precisely, we prove that $R/I$ fails to have the weak Lefschetz property, provided $4\leq n\leq 8,\ d\geq 4$ or $d=2r,\ 1\leq r\leq 8,\ 4\leq n\leq 2r(r+2)-1$.
A standard graded artinian monomial complete intersection algebra $A=\Bbbk[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]/(x_1^{a_1},x_2^{a_2},\ldots,x_n^{a_n})$, with $\Bbbk$ a field of characteristic zero, has the strong Lefschetz property due to Stanley in 1980. In this paper, we give a new proof for this result by using only the basic properties of linear algebra. Furthermore, our proof is still true in the case where the characteristic of $\Bbbk$ is greater than the socle degree of $A$, namely $a_1+a_2+\cdots+a_n - n$.
In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.
The basic sequence of a homogeneous ideal $I\sset R=k[\seq{x}{1}{r}]$ defining an Artinian graded ring $A=R/I$ not having the weak Lefschetz property has the property that the first term of the last part is less than the last term of the penultimate part. For a general linear form $\ell$ in $\seq{x}{1}{r}$, this fact affects in a certain way the behavior of the $r-1$ square matrices in $k[\ell]$ which represent the multiplications of the elements of $A$ by $\seq{x}{1}{r-1}$ through a minimal free presentation of $A$ over $k[\ell]$. Taking advantage of it, we consider some modules over an algeb…
A simplicial sphere $Δ$ is said to be generically anisotropic over a field $\mathbb{F}$ if, for a certain purely transcendental field extension $\mathbf{k}$ of $\mathbb{F}$, a certain Artinian reduction $A$ of the face ring $\mathbf{k}[Δ]$ has the following property: For every nonzero homogeneous element $α\in A$ of degree at most $(\dimΔ+1)/2$, its square $α^2$ is also nonzero. The importance of this property is that the hard Lefschetz property for simplicial spheres can be derived from it. A recent result of Papadakis and Petrotou shows that every simplicial sphere is generically anisotropic…
In this paper we prove that a deformed tensor product of two Lefschetz algebras is a Lefschetz algebra. We then use this result in conjunction with some basic Schubert calculus to prove that the coinvariant ring of a finite reflection has the strong Lefschetz property.
Assume sigma is a face of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex D. We investigate the question of whether the Weak Lefschetz Property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D] (over an infinite field k) is equivalent to the same property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D_sigma] of the stellar subdivision D_sigma. We prove that this is the case if the dimension of sigma is big compared to the codimension.
We give a characterization of the Lefschetz elements in Artinian Gorenstein rings over a field of characteristic zero in terms of the higher Hessians. As an application, we give new examples of Artinian Gorenstein rings which do not have the strong Lefschetz property.
In this article, we consider the weighted generating function of matchings in the complete graph. We define an Artinian Gorenstein algebra as the quotient ring of a polynomial ring by the annihilator of the generating function. We show the strong Lefschetz property of the algebra.
We deal with a generalization of a Theorem of P. Gordan and M. Noether on hypersurfaces with vanishing (first) Hessian. We prove that for any given $N\geq 3$, $d \geq 3$ and $2\leq k < \frac{d}{2}$ there are infinitely many irreducible hypersurfaces $X = V(f)\subset \mathbb{P}^N$, of degree $\operatorname{deg}(f)=d$, not cones and such that their Hessian determinant of order $k$, $\operatorname{hess}^k_f$, vanishes identically. The vanishing of higher Hessians is closely related with the Strong (or Weak) Lefschetz property for standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra, as pointed out firstly…
Using a connection to lozenge tilings of triangular regions, we establish an easily checkable criterion that guarantees the weak Lefschetz property of a quotient by a monomial ideal. It is also shown that each such ideal also has a semistable syzygy bundle.
We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function…
