We use curvature decompositions to construct generating sets for the space of algebraic curvature tensors and for the space of tensors with the same symmetries as those of a torsion free, Ricci symmetric connection; the latter naturally appear in relative hypersurface theory.
Using the Blaschke-Berwald metric and the affine shape operator of a hypersurface M in the (n+1)-dimensional real affine space we can define some generalized curvature tensor named the Opozda-Verstraelen affine curvature tensor. In this paper we determine curvature conditions of pseudosymmetry type expressed by this tensor for locally strongly convex hypersurfaces M, n>2, with two distinct affine principal curvatures or with three distinct affine principal curvatures assuming that at least one affine principal curvature has multiplicity 1.
In this work we study the affine principal lines of surfaces in 3-space. We consider the binary differential equation of the affine curvature lines and obtain the topological models of these curves near the affine umbilic points (elliptic and hyperbolic). We also describe the generic behavior of affine curvature lines in the neighborhood of points with double eigenvalues (but not umbilics) of the affine shape operator and parabolic points
After having given the general variational formula for the functionals indicated in the title, the critical points of the integral of the equi-affine curvature under area constraint and the critical points of the full-affine arc-length are studied in greater detail.
In this paper, the Cartan frames and the equi-affine curvatures are described with the help of the Frenet frames and the Frenet curvatures of a non-null and non-degenerate curve in a 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The constancy of the Frenet curvatures of such a curve always implies the constancy of the equi-affine curvatures. We show that the converse statement does not hold in general. Finally, we study the equi-affine curvatures of null curves in 3-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds, and prove that they are related to their pseudo-torsion.
We use results of Matzeu and Nikcevic to decompose the space of affine Kaehler curvature tensors as a direct sum of irreducible modules in the complex setting
For an arbitrary nondegenerate curve in a pseudo-Riemann\-ian (including Riemannian) 2-manifold, we express the equi-affine curvature with the help of the Frenet (geodesic) curvature of this curve.
Let $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ be a smooth real affine variety with compact real points $X_{\mathbb{R}}$. We show that $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ is diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of $X_{\mathbb{R}}$ provided that $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ admits a complete Riemannian metric of nonnegative sectional curvature which is also invariant under the conjugation.
In this paper, we study the Einstein multiply warped products with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and the multiply warped products with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection with constant scalar curvature, we apply our results to generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and generalized Kasner spacetimes with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and find some new examples of Einstein affine manifolds and affine manifolds with constant scalar curvature.ß We also consider the multiply warped products with an affine connection with a zero torsi…
This note derives parametrizations for surfaces of revolution that satisfy an affine-linear relation between their respective curvature radii. Alongside, parametrizations for the uniform normal offsets of those surfaces are obtained. Those parametrizations are found explicitly for a countably-infinite many of them, and of those, it is shown which are algebraic. Lastly, for those surfaces which have a constant ratio of principal curvatures, parametrizations with a constant angle between the parameter curves are found.
A curvature model (V,A) is a real vector space V which is equipped with a "curvature operator" A(x,y)z that A has the same symmetries as an affine curvature operator; A(x,y)z=-A(y,x)z and A(x,y)z+A(y,z)x+A(z,x)y=0. Such a model is called projective affine Osserman if the spectrum of the Jacobi operator J(y):x->A(x,y)y, is projectively constant. There are topological conditions imposed on such a model by Adam's Theorem concerning vector fields on spheres. In this paper we construct projective affine Osserman curvature models when the dimension is odd, when the dimension is congruent to 2 mod 4,…
In this paper we define the class of constant affine mean curvature (CAMC) discrete asymptotic nets, which contains the well-known classes of affine spheres and affine minimal asymptotic nets. This class is defined by considering fields of compatible interpolating quadrics, i.e., quadrics that have common tangent planes at the edges of the net. We show that, for CAMC asymptotic nets, ruled discrete asymptotic nets is equivalent to ruled compatible interpolating quadrics. Moreover, we prove discrete counterparts of some known properties of the Demoulin transform of a smooth CAMC surface.
We study the equation for improper (parabolic) affine spheres from the view point of contact geometry and provide the generic classification of singularities appearing in geometric solutions to the equation as well as their duals. We also show the results for surfaces of constant Gaussian curvatureand for developable surfaces. In particular we confirm that generic singularities appearing in such a surface are just cuspidal edges and swallowtails.
We introduce a new approach for computing curvature of sub-Riemannian manifolds. Curvature is here meant as symplectic invariants of Jacobi curves of geodesics, as introduced by Zelenko and Li. We describe how they can be expressed using a compatible affine connection and induced tensors, without any restriction on our sub-Riemannian manifold or the choice of connection. In particular, we obtain a universal Bonnet-Myers theorem of Riemannian type. We also give universal formulas for the canonical horizontal frame along each geodesic and an algorithm for computing the curvature in general. Seve…
At a 3/2-cusp of a given plane curve $γ(t)$, both of the Euclidean curvature $κ_g$ and the affine curvature $κ_A$ diverge. In this paper, we show that each of $\sqrt{|s_g|}κ_g$ and $(s_A)^2 κ_A$ (called the Euclidean and affine normalized curvature, respectively) at a 3/2-cusp is a smooth function of the variable $t$, where $s_g$ (resp. $s_A$) is the Euclidean (resp. affine) arclength parameter of the curve corresponding to the 3/2-cusp $s_g=0$ (resp. $s_A=0$). Moreover, we give a characterization of the behaviour of the curvature functions $κ_g$ and $κ_A$ at 3/2-cusps. On the other hand, infl…
Given a pair of real functions $(k,f)$, we study the conditions they must satisfy for $k+λf$ to be the curvature in the arc-length of a closed planar curve for all real $λ$. Several equivalent conditions are pointed out, certain periodic behaviours are shown as essential and a family of such pairs is explicitely constructed. The discrete counterpart of the problem is also studied. Finally, the characterization obtained is used to show that a sufficient analogue of the 4-vertex theorem cannot be developed.
If $c, \overline c\colon [a,b]\to \mathbb R^2$ are two convex planar curve parameterized by affine arc length and $A\colon [a,b]\to [0,\infty)$ is the area bounded by the restriction $c\big|_{[a,s]}$ and the segment between $c(a)$ and $c(s)$ with $\overline A$ the corresponding function for $\overline c$, and the affine curvature of $c$ pointwise less than the affine curvature of $\overline c$. Then $A(s)\ge \overline A(s)$. Also for any point of a convex curve we define \emph{adapted affine coordinates} centered at the point and give sharp estimates on the coordinates of the curve in terms of…
Suppose curves are moving by curvature in a plane, but one embeds the plane in $R^3$ and looks at the plane from an angle. Then circles shrinking to a round point would appear to be ellipses shrinking to an ``elliptical point,'' and the surface energy would appear to be anisotropic as would the mobility. The result of this paper is that if one uses the apparent surface energy and the apparent mobility, then the motion by weighted curvature with mobility in the apparent plane is the same as motion by curvature in the original plane but then viewed from the angle. This result applies not only to…
In this article, we introduce a $2$-parameter family of affine connections and derive the Ricci curvature. We first establish an integral Bochner technique. On one hand, this technique yields a new proof to our recent work in \cite{LX} for substatic manifolds. On the other hand, this technique leads to various geometric inequalities and eigenvalue estimates under a much more general Ricci curvature conditions. The new Ricci curvature condition interpolates between static Ricci tensor and $1$-Bakry-Emery Ricci, and also includes the conformal Ricci as an intermediate case.
Let R be an algebraic curvature tensor for a non-degenerate inner product of signature(p,q) where q>4. If $π$ is a spacelike 2 plane, let $R(π)$ be the associated skew-symmetric curvature operator. We classify the algebraic curvature tensors so R(-) has constant rank 2 and show these are geometrically realizable by hypersurfaces in flat spaces. We also classify the Ivanov-Petrova algebraic curvature tensors of rank 2; these are the algebraic curvature tensors of constant rank 2 such that the complex Jordan normal form of R(-) is constant.
The second boundary value problem of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation is a nonlinear, fourth order, geometric partial differential equation. It was introduced by Trudinger and Wang in 2005 in their investigation of the affine Plateau problem in affine geometry. The previous works of Trudinger-Wang, Chau-Weinkove and the author solved this global problem in $W^{4,p}$ under some restrictions on the sign or integrability of the affine mean curvature. We remove these restrictions in this paper and obtain $W^{4,p}$ solution to the second boundary value problem when the affine mean curv…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the differential geometry of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional normed spaces from the viewpoint of affine differential geometry. We endow the surface with a useful Riemannian metric which is closely related to normal curvature, and from this we re-calculate the Minkowski Gaussian and mean curvatures. These curvatures are also re-obtained in terms of ambient affine distance functions, and as a consequence we characterize minimal surfaces as the solutions of a certain differential equation. We also investigate in which cases it is possible that the af…
In the present paper it is considered a class V of 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds M with a metric g and two affinor tensors q and S. It is defined another metric \bar{g} in M. The local coordinates of all these tensors are circulant matrices. It is found: 1)\ a relation between curvature tensors R and \bar{R} of g and \bar{g}, respectively; 2)\ an identity of the curvature tensor R of g in the case when the curvature tensor \bar{R} vanishes; 3)\ a relation between the sectional curvature of a 2-section of the type \{x, qx\} and the scalar curvature of M.
It is developed the considerations from (S. M. Minčić, [14, 15]) about curvature tensors and pseudotensors for a non-symmetric affine connection space in this paper. How many kinds of covariant derivatives are enough to be defined for complete researching in the field of non-symmetric affine connection spaces is examined here. This result is interpreted. After that, we searched how many curvature tensors and pseudotensors of a non-symmetric affine connection space are linearly independent. In the next, it is examined is it possible to express all curvature tensors as the linear combinations of…
In this paper we study the general affine geometry of curves in affine space $A^2$. For a regular plane curves we define two kinds of moving frames. The first is of minimal order in all moving frames. The second is the Frenet moving frame. We get the moving equations of these moving frames. And we prove that curvature and signature are the complete invariants of regular curves. As application we give a complete classification of constant curvature curves in $A^2$.
In this note, we give the correct statements of [2,Proposition 3.3 and Theorem 3.4] and a formula of the Chern curvature in terms of the curvature tensor $R^V$ of the affine connection $\nabla^V$ and the Chern tensor $P$.
We study the 8 natural GL equivariant geometric realization questions for the space of generalized algebraic curvature tensors. All but one of them is solvable; a non-zero projectively flat Ricci antisymmetric generalized algebraic curvature is not geometrically realizable by a projectively flat Ricci antisymmetric torsion free connection.
The associativity of the multiplication on a Frobenius manifold is equivalent to the WDVV equation of a symmetric cubic form in flat coordinates. Frobenius manifold could be regarded a very special type of statistical manifold. There is a natural commutative product on each tangent space of a statistical manifold. We show that it is associative, hence making it into a manifold with Frobenius algebra structure, if and only if the sectional $K$-curvature vanishes. In other words, WDVV equation is equivalent to zero sectional $K$-curvature. This gives a curvature interpretation for WDVV equation.
In this paper, we compute sub-Riemannian limits of Gaussian curvature for a Euclidean $C^2$-smooth surface in the affine group and the group of rigid motions of the Minkowski plane away from characteristic points and signed geodesic curvature for Euclidean $C^2$-smooth curves on surfaces. We get Gauss-Bonnet theorems in the affine group and the group of rigid motions of the Minkowski plane.
We study a family of 3-dimensional Lorentz manifolds. Some members of the family are 0-curvature homogeneous, 1-affine curvature homogeneous, but not 1-curvature homogeneous. Some are 1-curvature homogeneous but not 2-curvature homogeneous. All are 0-modeled on indecomposible local symmetric spaces. Some of the members of the family are geodesically complete, others are not. All have vanishing scalar invariants.
For a polygon $x=(x_j)_{j\in \mathbb{Z}}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ we consider the midpoints polygon $(M(x))_j=\left(x_j+x_{j+1}\right)/2\,.$ We call a polygon a soliton of the midpoints mapping $M$ if its midpoints polygon is the image of the polygon under an invertible affine map. We show that a large class of these polygons lie on an orbit of a one-parameter subgroup of the affine group acting on $\mathbb{R}^n.$ These smooth curves are also characterized as solutions of the differential equation $\dot{c}(t)=Bc (t)+d$ for a matrix $B$ and a vector $d.$ For $n=2$ these curves are curves of constant …
The total curvature of complex hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ and its variation in families appear to depend not only on singularities but also on the behaviour in the neighbourhood of infinity. We find the asymptotic loss of total curvature towards infinity and we express the total curvature and the Gauss-Bonnet defect in terms of singularities and tangencies at infinity.
In this paper, we give a general group-theoretic construction of affine $\RR$-buildings, and more generally, of affine $Λ$-buildings, associated to semisimple Lie groups over nonarchimedean real closed fields. The construction of Kleiner-Leeb using the asymptotic cone of a Riemannian symmetric space appears as a special case. The explicit knowledge of the building arising here as the asymptotic cone simplifies the proof of the Margulis conjecture due to Kleiner-Leeb.
Automorphisms of finite order and real forms of "smooth" affine Kac-Moody algebras are studied, i.e. of 2-dimensional extensions of the algebra of smooth loops in a simple Lie algebra. It is shown that they can be parametrized by certain invariants and that in particular the classification of involutions essentially follows from Cartan's classifications in finite dimensions. We also prove that our approach works equally well in the usual algebraic setting and leads to the same results there.
We show that every finite-dimensional Alexandrov space X with curvature bounded from below embeds canonically into a product of an Alexandrov space with the same curvature bound and a Euclidean space such that each affine function on X comes from an affine function on the Euclidean space.
We classify closed convex $α$-curve shortening flows for sub-affine-critical powers $α\leq \frac{1}{3}$. In addition, we show that closed convex smooth finite entropy $α$-curve shortening flows with $\frac{1}{3}<α$ is a shrinking circle. After normalization, the ancient flows satisfying the above conditions converge exponentially fast to smooth closed convex shrinkers at the backward infinity. In particular, when $α=\frac{1}{k^2-1}$ with $3\leq k \in \mathbb{N}$, the round circle shrinker has non-trivial Jacobi fields, but the ancient flows do not evolve along the Jacobi fields.
These lecture notes are concerned with the solvability of the second boundary value problem of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation and related regularity theory of the Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations. The prescribed affine mean curvature equation is a fully nonlinear, fourth order, geometric partial differential equation of the following form $$\sum_{i, j=1}^n U^{ij}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial {x_i}\partial{x_j}}\left[(\det D^2 u)^{-\frac{n+1}{n+2}}\right]=f$$ where $(U^{ij})$ is the cofactor matrix of the Hessian matrix $D^2 u$ of a locally uniformly convex functio…
The results of the paper concern the topological structure of complete riemannian manifolds with cyclic holonomy groups and low-dimensional orientable complete flat manifolds. We also discuss related results such as the affine classification of orientable complete flat 4-manifolds, an algebraic criterion of an affine equivalence, the relationship between holonomy homomorphisms and some algebraic and geometric invariants.
Let $(X,L_{X})$ be an $n$-dimensional polarized manifold. Let $D$ be a smooth hypersurface defined by a holomorphic section of $L_{X}$. In this paper, we study the existence of a complete scalar-flat Kähler metric on $X \setminus D$ on the assumption that $D$ has a constant positive scalar curvature Kähler metric.
We prove compactification theorems for some complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Among other things, we prove that a complete noncompact Kähler Ricci flat manifold with maximal volume growth and quadratic curvature decay is a crepant resolution of a normal affine algebraic variety. Furthermore, such affine variety degenerates in two steps to the unique metric tangent cone at infinity.
We demonstrate the use of several tools from Algebraic Combinatorics such as Young tableaux, symmetry operators, the Littlewood-Richardson rule and discrete Fourier transforms of symmetric groups in investigations of algebraic curvature tensors.
Let $(X,L_{X})$ be an $n$-dimensional polarized manifold. Let $D$ be a smooth hypersurface defined by a holomorphic section of $L_{X}$. In this paper, we show the existence of a complete Kähler metric on $X \setminus D$ whose scalar curvature is flat away from some divisor if there are positive integers $l(>n),m$ such that the line bundle $K_{X}^{-l} \otimes L_{X}^{m}$ is very ample and the ratio $m/l$ is sufficiently small.
