These lecture notes are concerned with the solvability of the second boundary value problem of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation and related regularity theory of the Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations. The prescribed affine mean curvature equation is a fully nonlinear, fourth order, geometric partial differential equation of the following form
$$\sum_{i, j=1}^n U^{ij}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial {x_i}\partial{x_j}}\left[(\det D^2 u)^{-\frac{n+1}{n+2}}\right]=f$$ where $(U^{ij})$ is the cofactor matrix of the Hessian matrix $D^2 u$ of a locally uniformly convex function $u$. Its variant is related to the problem of finding Kähler metrics of constant scalar curvature in complex geometry. We first introduce the background of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation which can be viewed as a coupled system of Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations. Then we state key open problems and present the solution of the second boundary value problem that prescribes the boundary values of the solution $u$ and its Hessian determinant $\det D^2 u$. Its proof uses important tools from the boundary regularity theory of the Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations that we will present in the lecture notes.
We obtain boundary Holder gradient estimates and regularity for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampere equations under natural assumptions on the domain, Monge-Ampere measures and boundary data. Our results are affine invariant analogues of the boundary Holder gradient estimates of Krylov.
In this paper, we obtain boundary Harnack estimates and comparison theorem for nonnegative solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations under natural assumptions on the domain, Monge-Ampère measures and boundary data. Our results are boundary versions of Caffarelli and Gutiérrez's interior Harnack inequality for the linearized Monge-Ampère equations. As an application, we obtain sharp upper bound and global $L^p$-integrability for the Green's function of the linearized Monge-Ampère operator.
In this paper, we establish global $W^{2,p}$ estimates for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations under natural assumptions on the domain, Monge-Ampère measures and boundary data. Our estimates are affine invariant analogues of the global $W^{2,p}$ estimates of Winter for fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations, and also linearized counterparts of Savin's global $W^{2,p}$ estimates for the Monge-Ampère equations.
In this paper, we establish boundary Hölder gradient estimates for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations with $L^{p}$ ($n<p\leq\infty$) right hand side and $C^{1,γ}$ boundary values under natural assumptions on the domain, boundary data and the Monge-Ampère measure. These estimates extend our previous boundary regularity results for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations with bounded right hand side and $C^{1, 1}$ boundary data.
In this paper, we establish interior $C^{1,α}$ estimates for solutions of the linearized Monge-Amp$\grave{e}$re equation $$\mathcal{L}_ϕu:=\mathrm{tr}[ΦD^2 u]=f,$$ where the density of the Monge-Amp$\grave{e}$re measure $g:=\mathrm{det}D^2ϕ$ satisfies a $\mathrm{VMO}$-type condition and $Φ:=(\mathrm{det}D^2ϕ)(D^2ϕ)^{-1}$ is the cofactor matrix of $D^2ϕ$.
In this paper, we establish global $W^{2,p}$ estimates for solutions of the linearized Monge-Amp$\grave{e}$re equation $$\mathcal{L}_ϕu:=\mathrm{tr}[ΦD^2 u]=f,$$ where the density of the Monge-Amp$\grave{e}$re measure $g:=\mathrm{det}D^2ϕ$ satisfies a $\mathrm{VMO}$-type condition, and $Φ:=(\mathrm{det}D^2ϕ)(D^2ϕ)^{-1}$ is the cofactor matrix of $D^2ϕ$.
In this note, we obtain sharp bounds for the Green's function of the linearized Monge-Ampère operators associated to convex functions with either Hessian determinant bounded away from zero and infinity or Monge-Ampère measure satisfying a doubling condition. Our result is an affine invariant version of the classical result of Littman-Stampacchia-Weinberger for uniformly elliptic operators in divergence form. We also obtain the $L^{p}$ integrability for the gradient of the Green's function in two dimensions. As an application, we obtain a removable singularity result for the linearized Monge-Am…
The fractional nonlocal linearized Monge--Ampère equation is introduced. A Harnack inequality for nonnegative solutions to the Poisson problem on Monge--Ampère sections is proved.
In this paper, we establish global $C^{1+α,\frac{1+α}{2}}$ estimates for solutions of the linearized parabolic Monge-Amp$\grave{e}$re equation $$\mathcal{L}_ϕu(x,t):=-u_t\,\mathrm{det}D^2ϕ(x)+\mathrm{tr}[Φ(x) D^2 u]=f(x,t)$$ under appropriate conditions on the domain, Monge-Amp$\grave{e}$re measures, boundary data and $f$, where $Φ:=\mathrm{det}(D^2ϕ)(D^2ϕ)^{-1}$ is the cofactor of the Hessian of $D^2ϕ$.
In this paper, we investigate regularity for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations when the nonhomogeneous term has low integrability. We establish global $W^{1,p}$ estimates for all $p<\frac{nq}{n-q}$ for solutions to the equations with right hand side in $L^q$ where $n/2<q\leq n$. These estimates hold under natural assumptions on the domain, Monge-Ampère measures and boundary data. Our estimates are affine invariant analogues of the global $W^{1,p}$ estimates of N. Winter for fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations.
We establish global Hölder estimates for solutions to inhomogeneous linearized Monge-Ampère equations in two dimensions with the right hand side being the divergence of a bounded vector field. These equations arise in the semi-geostrophic equations in meteorology and in the approximation of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint using fourth order Abreu type equations. Our estimates hold under natural assumptions on the domain, boundary data and Monge-Ampère measure being bounded away from zero and infinity. They are an affine invariant and degenerate version of global Hölder est…
Let $w_0$ be a bounded, $C^3$, strictly plurisubharmonic function defined on $B_1\subset \mathbb{C}^n$. Then $w_0$ has a neighborhood in $L^{\infty}(B_1)$. Suppose that we have a function $ϕ$ in this neighborhood with $1-ε\le MA(u)\le 1+ε$ and there exists a function $u$ solving the linearized complex Monge-Ampere equation: $det(ϕ_{k\bar{l}})ϕ^{I\bar{j}}u_{I\bar{j}}=0$. Then one has an estimate on $|u|_{C^α(B_{\frac{1}{2}})}$ for some $α>0$ depending on $n$, as long as $ε$ is small depending on $n$. This partially generalizes Caffarelli's estimate for linearized real Monge-Ampere equation to t…
We obtain the Hölder regularity of time derivative of solutions to the dual semigeostrophic equations in two dimensions when the initial potential density is bounded away from zero and infinity. Our main tool is an interior Hölder estimate in two dimensions for an inhomogeneous linearized Monge-Ampère equation with right hand side being the divergence of a bounded vector field. As a further application of our Hölder estimate, we prove the Hölder regularity of the polar factorization for time-dependent maps in two dimensions with densities bounded away from zero and infinity. Our applications i…
Let $Ω\subset \R^n$ be a bounded convex domain and $ϕ\in C(\barΩ)$ be a convex function such that $ϕ$ is sufficiently smooth on $\partialΩ$ and the Monge--Ampère measure $\det D^2ϕ$ is bounded away from zero and infinity in $Ω$. The corresponding linearized Monge--Ampère equation is \[ \trace(ΦD^2 u) =f, \] where $Φ:= \det D^2 ϕ~ (D^2ϕ)^{-1}$ is the matrix of cofactors of $D^2ϕ$. We prove a conjecture in \cite{GT} about the relationship between $L^p$ estimates for $D^2 u$ and the closeness between $\det D^2ϕ$ and one. As a consequence, we obtain interior $W^{2,p}$ estimates for solutions to su…
Global Hölder estimates for linearized Monge-Ampère equations in divergence form with applications to dual semigeostrophic equations and periodic homogenization
We prove a Harnack inequality for solutions to $L_A u = 0$ where the elliptic matrix $A$ is adapted to a convex function satisfying minimal geometric conditions. An application to Sobolev inequalities is included.
We introduce certain energy functionals to the complex Monge-Ampere equation over a bounded domain with inhomogeneous boundary condition, and use these functionals to show the convergence of the solution to the parabolic Monge-Ampere equation.
We describe some natural relations connecting contact geometry, classical Monge-Ampere equations and theory of singularities of solutions to nonlinear PDEs. They reveal the hidden meaning of Monge-Ampere equations and sheds new light on some aspects of contact geometry.
We study the parabolic complex Monge-Ampère type equations on closed Hermitian manfolds. We derive uniform $C^\infty$ {\em a priori} estimates for normalized solutions, and then prove the $C^\infty$ convergence. The result also yields a way to carry out method of continuity for elliptic Monge-Ampére type equations.
In this note, we derive a Liouville theorem for the complex Monge-Ampère equation. Our result states that if the global solution $u$ of the complex Monge-Ampère equation with constant right-hand side differs from a quadratic polynomial solution by $o(\abs{x}^2)$ at infinity, then $u$ is a quadratic polynomial.
We show the volume maximizing property of the special Lagrangian submanifolds of a pseudo-Euclidean space. These special Lagrangian submanifolds arise locally as gradient graphs of solutions to Monge-Ampere Equations.
We prove the long time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the parabolic Monge-Ampère equation on compact almost Hermitian manifolds. We also show that the normalization of solution converges to a smooth function in $C^{\infty}$ topology as $t\rightarrow\infty$. Up to scaling, the limit function is a solution of the Monge-Ampère equation. This gives a parabolic proof of existence of solutions to the Monge-Ampère equation on almost Hermitian manifolds.
We study generalized complex Monge-Ampère type equations on closed Hermitian manifolds. We derive {\em a priori} estimates and then prove the existence of admissible solutions. Moreover, the gradient estimate is improved.
We study the parabolic flow for generalized complex Monge-Ampère type equations on closed Hermitian manifolds. We derive {\em a priori} $C^\infty$ estimates for normalized solutions, and then prove the $C^\infty$ convergence.
We prove uniform gradient and diameter estimates for a family of geometric complex Monge-Ampere equations. Such estimates can be applied to study geometric regularity of singular solutions of complex Monge-Ampere equations. We also prove a uniform diameter estimate for collapsing families of twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics on Kahler manifolds of nonnegative Kodaira dimensions.
In this paper, we present smooth examples of degenerate hyperbolic and mixed type Monge-Ampere equations in the plane, which do not admit a local C^3 solution.
We consider degenerate Monge-Ampère equations on compact Hessian manifolds. We establish compactness properties of the set of normalized quasi-convex functions and show local and global comparison principles for twisted Monge-Ampère operators. We then use the Perron method to solve Monge-Ampère equations whose RHS involves an arbitrary probability measure, generalizing works of Cheng-Yau, Delanoë, Caffarelli-Viaclovsky and Hultgren-Önnheim. The intrinsic approach we develop should be useful in deriving similar results on mildly singular Hessian varieties, in line with the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow…
We prove a local volume noncollapsing estimate for Kähler metrics induced from a family of complex Monge-Ampère equations, assuming a local Ricci curvature lower bound. This local volume estimate can be applied to establish various diameter and gradient estimate.
A new proof for stability estimates for the complex Monge-Ampère and Hessian equations is given, which does not require pluripotential theory. A major advantage is that the resulting stability estimates are then uniform under general degenerations of the background metric in the case of the Monge-Ampère equation, and under degenerations to a big class in the case of Hessian equations.
We prove the smoothness of weak solutions to an elliptic complex Monge-Ampere equation, using the smoothing property of the corresponding parabolic flow.
In this paper, we prove the asymptotic expansion of the solutions to some singular complex Monge-Ampère equation which arise naturally in the study of the conical Kähler-Einstein metric.
We show existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Monge-Ampere equation on compact almost complex manifolds with non-integrable almost complex structure.
In this paper, we consider the Monge-Ampère type equations on compact almost Hermitian manifolds. We derive $C^{\infty}$ a priori estimates under the existence of an admissible $\mathcal{C}$-subsolution. Finally, we obtain an existence result if there exists an admissible supersolution.
In this note, a gradient estimate for the complex Monge-Ampere equation is established. It differs from previous estimates of Yau, Hanani, Blocki, P. Guan, B. Guan - Q. Li in that it is pointwise, and depends only on the infimum of the solution instead of its $C^0$ norm.
We improve our previous gradient estimate for the Monge-Ampère equation on a compact Hermitian manifold and give a estimates for the non-mixed second order derivatives. These estimates are required to apply either the Evans-Krylov estimates for second order derivatives or the third derivatives estimates for equations with a gradient term.
We study various capacities on compact Kähler manifolds which generalize the Bedford-Taylor Monge-Ampère capacity. We then use these capacities to study the existence and the regularity of solutions of complex Monge-Ampère equations.
We study the asymptotics of complete Kaehler-Einstein metrics on strictly pseudoconvex domains in C^n and derive a convergence theorem for solutions to the corresponding Monge-Ampere equation. If only a portion of the boundary is analytic, the solutions satisfy Gevrey type estimates for tangential derivatives. A counterexample for the model linearized equation suggests that there is no local convergence theorem for the complex Monge-Ampere equation
We introduce generalized Monge-Ampère capacities and use these to study complex Monge-Ampère equations whose right-hand side is smooth outside a divisor. We prove, in many cases, that there exists a unique normalized solution which is smooth outside the divisor.
Inspired by constructions in complex geometry we introduce a thermodynamic framework for Monge-Ampère equations on real tori. We show convergence in law of the associated point processes and explain connections to complex Monge-Ampère equations and optimal transport.
We establish various stability results for solutions of complex Monge-Ampère equations in big cohomology classes, generalizing results that were known to hold in the context of Kähler classes.
We study the regularizing properties of complex Monge-Ampère flows on a Kähler manifold $(X,ω)$ when the initial data are $ω$-psh functions with zero Lelong number at all points. We prove that the general Monge-Ampère flow has a solution which is immediately smooth. We also prove the uniqueness and stability of solution.
In this paper, we consider a version of parabolic complex Monge-Ampere equations, and use a PDE approach similar to Phong et al to establish $L^{\infty}$ and Hölder estimates. We also generalize the $L^{\infty}$ estimates to parabolic Hessian equations.
We establish a stability result for elliptic and parabolic complex Monge-Amp{è}re equations on compact K{ä}hler manifolds, which applies in particular to the K{ä}hler-Ricci flow. Dedicated to Jean-Pierre Demailly on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
In this note, we consider complex Monge-Ampere equation posed on a compact Kähler manifold. We show how to get $L^p$($p<\infty$) and $L^{\infty}$ estimate for the gradient of the solution in terms of the continuity of the right hand side.
