The aim of this paper is to investigate the differential geometry of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional normed spaces from the viewpoint of affine differential geometry. We endow the surface with a useful Riemannian metric which is closely related to normal curvature, and from this we re-calculate the Minkowski Gaussian and mean curvatures. These curvatures are also re-obtained in terms of ambient affine distance functions, and as a consequence we characterize minimal surfaces as the solutions of a certain differential equation. We also investigate in which cases it is possible that the affine normal and the Birkhoff normal vector fields of an immersion coincide, proving that this only happens when the geometry is Euclidean.
We prove an existence result for local and global G-structure preserving affine immersions between affine manifolds. Several examples are discussed in the context of Riemannian and semi-Riemannian geometry, including the case of isometric immersions into Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant metric, and the case of isometric immersions into products of space forms.
In this paper we consider planar sections and visual contours of co-dimension one affine immersions. The main theorem says that the third order Taylor expansion of the difference between the visual contour and planar section functions is exactly the cubic form. We also consider parameterizations on two dimensional affine immersions whose coordinate lines are geodesics, in one direction, and both planar sections and visual contours in the other direction. We call such coordinates parallel-meridian. Among other results, we show that any two dimensional affine sphere that admits parallel-meridian…
We consider non-degenerate centro-affine hypersurface immersions in R^n whose cubic form is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the affine metric. There exists a bijective correspondence between homothetic families of proper affine hyperspheres with center in the origin and with parallel cubic form, and Köchers conic omega-domains, which are the maximal connected sets consisting of invertible elements in a real semi-simple Jordan algebra. Every level surface of the omega function in an omega-domain is an affine complete, Euclidean complete proper affine hypersphere with para…
We consider non-degenerate graph immersions into affine space $\mathbb A^{n+1}$ whose cubic form is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the affine metric. There exists a correspondence between such graph immersions and pairs $(J,γ)$, where $J$ is an $n$-dimensional real Jordan algebra and $γ$ is a non-degenerate trace form on $J$. Every graph immersion with parallel cubic form can be extended to an affine complete symmetric space covering the maximal connected component of zero in the set of quasi-regular elements in the algebra $J$. It is an improper affine hypersphere if a…
We classify all regular three-dimensional convex cones which possess an automorphism group of dimension at least two, and provide analytic expressions for the complete hyperbolic affine spheres which are asymptotic to the boundaries of these cones. The affine spheres are represented by explicit hypersurface immersions into three-dimensional real space. The generic member of the family of immersions is given by elliptic integrals.
In this paper we study the affine focal set, which is the bifurcation set of the affine distance to submanifolds $N^n$ contained in hypersurfaces $M^{n+1}$ of the $(n+2)$-space. We give condition under which this affine focal set is a regular hypersurface and, for curves in $3$-space, we describe its stable singularities. For a given Darboux vector field $ξ$ of the immersion $N\subset M$, one can define the affine metric $g$ and the affine normal plane bundle $\mathcal{A}$. We prove that the $g$-Laplacian of the position vector belongs to $\mathcal{A}$ if and only if $ξ$ is parallel. For umbil…
We study affine immersions as introduced by Nomizu and Pinkall. We classify those affine immersions of a surface in 4-space which are degenerate and have vanishing cubic form (i.e. parallel second fundamental form). This completes the classification of parallel surfaces of which the first results were obtained in the beginning of this century by Blaschke and his collaborators.
There exists a well known construction which allows to associate with two hyperbolic affine spheres $f_i: M_i^{n_i} \to \mathbb R^{n_i+1}$ a new hyperbolic affine sphere immersion of $I \times M_1 \times M_2$ into $\mathbb R^{n_1+n_2+3}$. In this paper we deal with the inverse problem: how to determine from properties of the difference tensor whether a given hyperbolic affine sphere immersion of a manifold $M^n \to \mathbb R^{n+1}$ can be decomposed in such a way.
We prove the existence of (branched) conformal immersions F: S^2 -> R^3 with mean curvature H > 0 arbitrarily prescribed up to a 3-dimensional affine indeterminacy. A similar result is proved for the space forms S^3, H^3 and partial results for surfaces of higher genus.
We develop an approach to affine symplectic invariant geometry of Lagrangian surfaces by the method of moving frames. The fundamental invariants of elliptic Lagrangian immersions in affine symplectic four-space are derived together with their integrability equations. The invariant setup is applied to discuss the question of symplectic applicability for elliptic Lagrangian immersions. Explicit examples are considered.
We show that closed, immersed, minimal hypersurfaces in a compact symmetric space satisfy a lower bound on the index plus nullity, which depends linearly on their first Betti number. Moreover, if either the minimal hypersurface satisfies a certain genericity condition, or if the ambient space is a product of two CROSSes, we improve this to a lower bound on the index alone, which is affine in the first Betti number. To prove these, we introduce a generalization of isometric immersions in Euclidean space. Compact symmetric spaces admit (and in fact are characterized by) such a structure with ske…
Let $M$ be a symplectic symmetric space, and let $\imath : M \to V$ be an extrinsic symplectic symmetric immersion, i.e., $(V, Ω)$ is a symplectic vector space and $\imath$ is an injective symplectic immersion such that for each point $p \in M$, the geodesic symmetry in $p$ is compatible with the reflection in the affine normal space at $\imath(p)$. We show that the existence of such an immersion implies that the transvection group of $M$ is solvable.
Let $(V, \Om)$ be a symplectic vector space and let $ϕ: M \ra V$ be a symplectic immersion. We show that $ϕ(M) \subset V$ is (locally) an extrinsic symplectic symmetric space (e.s.s.s.) in the sense of \cite{CGRS} if and only if the second fundamental form of $ϕ$ is parallel. Furthermore, we show that any symmetric space which admits an immersion as an e.s.s.s. also admits a {\em full} such immersion, i.e., such that $ϕ(M)$ is not contained in a proper affine subspace of $V$, and this immersion is unique up to affine equivalence. Moreover, we show that any extrinsic symplectic immersion of $M$…
We show that monochromatic Finsler metrics, i.e., Finsler metrics such that each two tangent spaces are isomorphic as normed spaces, are generalized Berwald metrics, i.e., there exists an affine connection, possibly with torsion, that preserves the Finsler function
We consider local CR-immersions of a strictly pseudoconvex real hypersurface $M\subset\bC^{n+1}$, near a point $p\in M$, into the unit sphere $\mathbb S\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$ with $d>0$. Our main result is that if there is such an immersion $f\colon (M,p)\to \mathbb S$ and $d < n/2$, then $f$ is {\em rigid} in the sense that any other immersion of $(M,p)$ into $\mathbb S$ is of the form $ϕ\circ f$, where $ϕ$ is a biholomorphic automorphism of the unit ball $\mathbb B\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$. As an application of this result, we show that an isolated singularity of an irreducible analytic variety of co…
We obtain bounds on the least dimension of an affine space that can contain an $n$-dimensional submanifold without any pairs of parallel or intersecting tangent lines at distinct points. This problem is closely related to the generalized vector field problem, non-singular bilinear maps, and the immersion problem for real projective spaces.
We introduce a new volume definition on normed vector spaces. We show that the induced $k$-area functionals are convex for all $k$. In the particular case $k=2$, our theorem implies that Busemann's 2-volume density is convex, which was recently shown by Burago-Ivanov. We also show how the new volume definition is related to the centroid body and prove some affine isoperimetric inequalities.
Let $S$ be a compact, orientable surface of hyperbolic type. Let $(k_+,k_-)$ be a pair of negative numbers and let $(g_+, g_-)$ be a pair of marked metrics over $S$ of constant curvature equal to $k_+$ and $k_-$ respectively. Using a functional introduced by Bonsante, Mondello \& Schlenker, we show that there exists a unique affine deformation $Γ:=(ρ,τ)$ of a Fuchsian group such that $(S,g_+)$ and $(S, g_-)$ embed isometrically as locally strictly convex Cauchy surfaces in the future and past complete components respectively of the quotient by $Γ$ of an open subset $Ω$ of Minkowski space. Such…
An AH (affine hypersurface) structure is a pair comprising a projective equivalence class of torsion-free connections and a conformal structure satisfying a compatibility condition which is automatic in two dimensions. They generalize Weyl structures, and a pair of AH structures is induced on a co-oriented non-degenerate immersed hypersurface in flat affine space. The author has defined for AH structures Einstein equations, which specialize on the one hand to the usual Einstein Weyl equations and, on the other hand, to the equations for affine hyperspheres. Here these equations are solved for …
Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$ and $\mathfrak g$ its Lie algebra. We study the monodromy map from the space of $\mathfrak g$-differential systems on a compact connected Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g \,\geq\, 2$ to the character variety of $G$-representations of the fundamental group of $Σ$. If the complex dimension of $G$ is at least three, we show that the monodromy map is an immersion at the generic point.
We construct simply connected, complete, non-$CMC$ biconservative surfaces in the $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ in an intrinsic and extrinsic way. We obtain three families of such surfaces, and, for each surface, the set of points where the gradient of the mean curvature function does not vanish is dense and has two connected components. In the intrinsic approach, we first construct a simply connected, complete abstract surface and then prove that it admits a unique biconservative immersion in $\mathbb{H}^3$. Working extrinsically, we use the images of the explicit parametric…
We prove that, given a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ and disjoint finite sets $\varnothing\neq E\subsetΣ$ and $Λ\subsetΣ$, every map $Λ\to \mathbb{R}^3$ extends to a complete conformal minimal immersion $Σ\setminus E\to \mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature. This result opens the door to study optimal hitting problems in the framework of complete minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature. To this respect we provide, for each integer $r\ge 1$, a set $A\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ consisting of $12r+3$ points in an affine plane such that if $A$ is contained in a complete nonflat o…
We introduce para-complex and pseudo-Riemannian geometric methods for the study of representations of surface groups in $\mathrm{SL}(2m+1,\mathbb{R})$. For $m=1$ our techniques allow to recover several known results for Hitchin representations without any reference to convex projective geometry or hyperbolic affine spheres. In particular, we describe analytically the Guichard-Wienhard domain of discontinuity in the flag variety and the corresponding concave foliated flag structure of Nolte-Riestenberg. In higher rank, we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between stable cyclic $\mathrm{SL}(2m+…
We study the logarithmic $L^{(α)}$-divergence which extrapolates the Bregman divergence and corresponds to solutions to novel optimal transport problems. We show that this logarithmic divergence is equivalent to a conformal transformation of the Bregman divergence, and, via an explicit affine immersion, is equivalent to Kurose's geometric divergence. In particular, the $L^{(α)}$-divergence is a canonical divergence of a statistical manifold with constant sectional curvature $-α$. For such a manifold, we give a geometric interpretation of its sectional curvature in terms of how the divergence b…
The problem of immersing a simply connected surface with a prescribed shape operator is discussed. From classical and more recent work, it is known that, aside from some special degenerate cases, such as when the shape operator can be realized by a surface with one family of principal curves being geodesic, the space of such realizations is a convex set in an affine space of dimension at most 3. The cases where this maximum dimension of realizability is achieved have been classified and it is known that there are two such families of shape operators, one depending essentially on three arbitrar…
