The results of the paper concern the topological structure of complete riemannian manifolds with cyclic holonomy groups and low-dimensional orientable complete flat manifolds. We also discuss related results such as the affine classification of orientable complete flat 4-manifolds, an algebraic criterion of an affine equivalence, the relationship between holonomy homomorphisms and some algebraic and geometric invariants.
A special linear Lie group over the real number field and the quarternion field admits a projectivley flat affine connection. We show that parabolic subgroups are autoparallel submanifolds and give a criterion the induced connection is projectively equivalent to a flat affine connection.
This paper deals essentially with affine or projective transformations of Lie groups endowed with a flat left invariant affine or projective structure. These groups are called flat affine or flat projective Lie groups. Our main results determine Lie groups admitting flat bi-invariant affine or projective structures. These groups could play an essential role in the study of homogeneous spaces $M=G/H$ admitting flat affine or flat projective structures invariant under the natural action of $G$ on $M$. A. Medina asked several years ago if the group of affine transformations of a flat affine Lie g…
These are lecture notes prepared for the summer school "Geometric, algebraic and topological methods in quantum field theory", held in Villa de Leyva in July 2017. Our goal is to provide an introduction to a conjecture of Chern that states that the Euler characteristic of a closed affine manifold vanishes. We present part of the history and motivation for the conjecture as well as some recent developments. All comments and corrections are most welcome!
In this paper, we show that a compact affine manifold endowed with an Affine Anosov transformation is finitely covered by a complete affine nilmanifold.
We investigate the geometric properties of hyperbolic affine flat, affine minimal surfaces in the equiaffine space $\mathbb{A}^3$. We use Cartan's method of moving frames to compute a complete set of local invariants for such surfaces. Using these invariants, we give a complete local classification of such surfaces and construct new examples.
In this paper, we use the affine Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow to prove a generalized Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem on flat Higgs bundles over a class of non-compact affine Gauduchon manifolds.
In this paper we exhibit a family of flat left invariant affine structures on the double Lie group of the oscillator Lie group of dimension 4, associated to each solution of classical Yang-Baxter equation given by Boucetta and Medina. On the other hand, using Koszul's method, we prove the existence of an immersion of Lie groups between the group of affine transformations of a flat affine and simply connected manifold and the classical group of affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^n$. In the last section, for each flat left invariant affine symplectic connection on the group of affine transfor…
The aim of this paper is to give a local description of affine surfaces, whose induced Blaschke structure is projectively flat. We show that such affine surfaces with constant Gauss affine curvature and indefinite induced Blaschke metric are described by soliton equations.
The theory of flat Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and flat affine manifolds is closely connected to the topic of prehomogeneous affine representations of Lie groups. In this article, we exhibit several aspects of this correspondence. At the heart of our presentation is a development of the theory of characteristic classes and characters of prehomogeneous affine representations. We give applications concerning flat affine, as well as Pseudo-Riemannian and symplectic affine flat manifolds.
This paper deals with affine connections on real manifolds. We give a new characterization of flat affine connections on real manifolds by means of certain affine representations of the Lie group of automorphisms preserving the connection. Then we specialize the characterization to the case of a left invariant connection on a Lie group. In the last case, we show the existence of a Lie group endowed with a flat affine bi-invariant connection whose Lie algebra contains the Lie algebra of complete infinitesimal affine transformations of the given Lie group. We also prove some results about flat a…
We give a new characterization of flat affine manifolds in terms of an action of the Lie algebra of classical infinitesimal affine transformations on the bundle of linear frames. We characterize flat affine symplectic Lie groups using symplectic étale affine representations and as a consequence of this, we show that a flat affine symplectic Lie group with bi-invariant symplectic connection contains a nontrivial one parameter subgroup formed by central translations. We give two methods for constructing flat affine symplectic Lie groups, thus obtaining all those having bi-invariant symplectic co…
Affine manifolds are called integral if there is an atlas such that all transition maps are affine transformations with integer matrices of linear parts. In this paper we describe all complete integral affine structures on compact three-dimensional manifolds up to a finite-sheeted covering. Also a complete list of integral affine structures on the three-dimensional torus and compact three-dimensional nilmanifolds was obtained.
In this paper we prove that all manifolds with affine connection are globally projectively equivalent to some space with equiaffine connection (equiaffine manifold). These manifolds are characterised by a symmetric Ricci tensor.
In this paper, we introduce a new structure, namely, affine Szabó connection. We prove that, on $2$-dimensional affine manifolds, the affine Szabó structure is equivalent to one of the cyclic parallelism of the Ricci tensor. A characterization for locally homogeneous affine Szabó surface is obtained. Examples of two- and three-dimensional affine Szabó manifolds are also given.
We give characterizations of affine transformations and affine vector fields in terms of the spray. By utilizing the Jacobi type equation that characterizes affine vector fields, we prove some rigidity theorems of affine vector fields on compact or forward complete non-compact Finsler manifolds with non-positive total Ricci curvature.
A Sim(n-1,1) affine manifold is an affine manifold whose linear holonomy is contained in the similarity lorentzian group but not in the lorentzian group. The class of similarity lorentzian affine manifolds is a small part in the nice class of conformally lorentzian flat manifolds. In this paper we show that a compact Sim(n-1,1) affine manifold is incomplete. We characterize the universal cover of radiant compact Sim(n-1,1) affine manifolds whose developing map is injective. Let q be the quadratic form which define the Sim(n-1,1) structure, using riemannian foliation theory, we classify compact…
In this paper, we consider the cyclic parallel Ricci tensor condition, which is a necessary condition for an affine manifold to be Szabó. We show that, in dimension $3$, there are affine manifolds which satisfy the cyclic parallel Ricci tensor but are not Szabó. Conversely, it is known that in dimension $2$, the cyclic parallel Ricci tensor forces the affine manifold to be Szabó. Examples of $3$-dimensional affine Szabo manifolds are also given. Finally, we give some properties of Riemannian extensions defined on the cotangent bundle over an affine Szabó manifold.
In this paper we prove that for a complete, connected and oriented Käler affine manifold $(M,G)$ of dimension $n,$ if it is Kähler affine Ricci flat or the K$\ddot{a}$hler affine scalar curvature $S\equiv0,$ ($n\leq 5$), then the universal covering manifold $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$ is isometric to the Euclidean n-space $E^{n}$.
We show that the total space of any affine $\mathbb{C}$-bundle over $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with negative degree admits an ALE scalar-flat Kähler metric. Here the degree of an affine bundle means the negative of the self-intersection number of the section at infinity in a natural compactification of the bundle, and so for line bundles it agrees with the usual notion of the degree.
According to the Markus conjecture, closed flat affine manifolds with parallel volume should be complete. We show it is the case for three-manifolds when the holonomy centralizes an affine transformation preserving the volume. It is notably the case when the holonomy group has non trivial center or when the automorphism group is non discrete.
An affine manifold is a manifold with torsion-free flat affine connection. A geometric topologist's definition of an affine manifold is a manifold with an atlas of charts to the affine space with affine transition functions; a radiant affine manifold is an affine manifold with holonomy consisting of affine transformations fixing a common fixed point. We decompose an orientable closed radiant affine 3-manifold into radiant 2-convex affine manifolds and radiant concave affine 3-manifolds along mutually disjoint totally geodesic tori or Klein bottles using the convex and concave decomposition of …
We give a characterization of flat affine connections on manifolds by means of a natural affine representation of the universal covering of the Lie group of diffeomorphisms preserving the connection. From the infinitesimal point of view, this representation is determined by the 1-connection form and the fundamental form of the bundle of linear frames of the manifold. We show that the group of affine transformations of a real flat affine $n$-dimensional manifold, acts on $\mathbb{R}^n$ leaving an open orbit when its dimension is greater than $n$. Moreover, when the dimension of the group of aff…
Let M be a compact connected special affine manifold equipped with an affine Gauduchon metric. We show that a pair (E, ϕ), consisting of a flat vector bundle E over M and a flat nonzero section ϕ of E, admits a solution to the vortex equation if and only if it is polystable. To prove this, we adapt the dimensional reduction techniques for holomorphic pairs on Kähler manifolds to the situation of flat pairs on affine manifolds.
A closed affine manifold is a closed manifold with coordinate patches into affine space whose transition maps are restrictions of affine automorphisms. Such a structure gives rise to a local diffeomorphism from the universal cover of the manifold to affine space that is equivariant with respect to a homomorphism from the fundamental group to the group of affine automorphisms. The local diffeomorphism and homomorphism are referred to as the developing map and holonomy respectively. In the case where the linear holonomy preserves a common vector, certain `large' open subsets upon which the devel…
We prove that any real Lie group of dimension \leq 5 admits a left invariant flat projective structure. We also prove that a real Lie group L of dimension \leq 5 admits a left invariant flat affine structure if and only if the Lie algebra of L is not perfect.
For an arbitrary nondegenerate curve in a pseudo-Riemann\-ian (including Riemannian) 2-manifold, we express the equi-affine curvature with the help of the Frenet (geodesic) curvature of this curve.
The group action which defines the moduli problem for the deformation space of flat affine structures on the two-torus is the action of the affine group $\Aff(2)$ on $\bbR^2$. Since this action has non-compact stabiliser $\GL(2,\bbR)$, the underlying locally homogeneous geometry is highly non-Riemannian. In this article, we describe the deformation space of all flat affine structures on the two-torus. In this context interesting phenomena arise in the topology of the deformation space, which, for example, is \emph{not} a Hausdorff space. This contrasts with the case of constant curvature metri…
We describe the compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds admitting a parallel lightlike vector field. The classification of compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds admitting non-isometric affine diffeomorphisms follows, together with the complete description of these morphisms. Such a Lorentzian manifold is in some sense an equivariant deformation of a flat one.
In this paper we introduce a natural definition for the affine maps between two Finsler manifolds $(M, F)$ and $(N,\tilde F)$ and we give some geometrical properties of these affine maps. Starting from the equations of the affine maps, we construct a natural Berwald-Riemann-Lagrange geometry on the 1-jet space $J^1(TM;N)$, in the sense of a Berwald nonlinear connection $Γ^b_jet$, a Berwald $Γ^b_jet$-linear d-connection $BΓ^b_jet$, together with its d-torsions and d-curvatures, which geometrically characterizes the initial affine maps between Finsler manifolds.
We consider closed manifolds that possess a so called rank one ray structure. That is a (flat) affine structure such that the linear part is given by the products of a diagonal transformation and a commuting rotation. We show that closed manifolds with a rank one ray structure are either complete or their developing map is a cover onto the complement of an affine subspace. This result extends the geometric picture given by Fried on closed similarity manifolds. We prove, in the line of Markus conjecture, that if the rank one ray geometry has parallel volume, then closed manifolds are necessaril…
In this paper we study n-composition series of affine manifolds. One composition series are classified using gerbe theory. It is natural to think that n-composition series must be classified using n-gerbe theory. In the last section of this, we propose a notion of abelian n-gerbe theory
In this paper, the Cartan frames and the equi-affine curvatures are described with the help of the Frenet frames and the Frenet curvatures of a non-null and non-degenerate curve in a 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The constancy of the Frenet curvatures of such a curve always implies the constancy of the equi-affine curvatures. We show that the converse statement does not hold in general. Finally, we study the equi-affine curvatures of null curves in 3-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds, and prove that they are related to their pseudo-torsion.
For the root system of type $B_l$ and $C_l$, we generalize the result of \cite{DZ1998} by showing the existence of a Frobenius manifold structure on the orbit space of the extended affine Weyl group that corresponds to any vertex of the Dynkin diagram instead of a particular choice of \cite{DZ1998}.
In this paper, we study affine manifolds endowed with linear foliations. These are foliations defined by vector subspaces invariant by the linear holonomy. We show that an $n$-dimensional compact, complete, and oriented affine manifold endowed with a codimension $1$ linear foliation ${\cal F}$ is homeomophic to the $n$-dimensional torus if the leaves of ${\cal F}$ are simply connected. Let $(M,\nabla_M)$ be a $3$-dimensional compact affine manifold endowed with a codimension $1$ linear foliation. We prove that $(M,\nabla_M)$ has a finite cover which is homeomorphic to the total space of a bund…
We study affine maps between affine manifolds. Even when the fibers are compact and diffeomorphic, two of them can inherit different affine structures from the source space. This leads to a fixed linear holonomy deformation theory of the affine structure of an affine manifold. We found various conditions which make the fibers to be affinely isomorphic. We also classify affine bundles which total space is a compact and complete affine manifold.
We show that the natural S^1-bundle over a projective special Kaehler manifold carries the geometry of a proper affine hypersphere endowed with a Sasakian structure. The construction generalizes the geometry of the Hopf-fibration $\Sr^{2n+1} \longrightarrow \CP^n$ in the context of projective special Kaehler manifolds. As an application we have that a natural circle bundle over the Kuranishi moduli space of a Calabi-Yau threefold is a Lorentzian proper affine hypersphere.
Geodesically complete affine manifolds are quotients of the Euclidean space through a properly discontinuous action of a subgroup of affine Euclidean transformations. An equivalent definition is that the tangent bundle of such a manifold admits a flat, symmetric and complete connection. If the completeness assumption is dropped, the manifold is not necessarily obtained as the quotient of the Euclidean space through a properly discontinuous group of affine transformations. In fact the universal cover may no longer be the Euclidean space. The main result of this paper states that all compact aff…
In order to understand the structure of the cohomologies involved in the study of projectively equivariant quantizations, we introduce a notion of affine representation of a Lie algebra. We show how it is related to linear representations and 1-cohomology classes of the algebra. We classify the affine representations of the Lie algebra of vector fields of a smooth manifold associated to its action on symmetric tensor fields of type (1,2). Among them, we recover the space of symmetric affine linear connections and that of projective structures of the manifold. We compute some of the associated c…
We discuss new sufficient conditions under which an affine manifold $(M,\nabla)$ is geodesically connected. These conditions are shown to be essentially weaker than those discussed in groundbreaking work by Beem and Parker and in recent work by Alexander and Karr, with the added advantage that they yield an elementary proof of the main result.
Ray nil-affine geometries are defined on nilpotent spaces. They occur in every parabolic geometry and in those cases, the nilpotent space is an open dense subset of the corresponding flag manifold. We are interested in closed manifolds having a ray nil-affine structure. We show that under a rank one condition on the isotropy, closed manifolds are either complete or their developing map is a cover onto the complement of a nil-affine subspace. We prove that if additionally there is a parallel volume or if the automorphism group acts non properly then closed manifolds are always complete. This pap…
In these notes we survey basic concepts of affine geometry and their interaction with Riemannian geometry. We give a characterization of affine manifolds which has as counterpart those pseudo-Riemannian manifolds whose Levi-Civita connection is flat. We show that no connected semisimple Lie group admits a left invariant flat affine connection. We characterize flat pseudo-Riemannian Lie groups. For a flat left-invariant pseudo-metric on a Lie group, we show the equivalence between the completeness of the Levi-Civita connection and unimodularity of the group. We emphasize the case of flat left i…
The connection between Jacobi fields and odular structures of affine manifold is established. It is shown that the Jacobi fields generate the natural geoodular structure of affinely connected manifolds.
Let $M$ be a compact connected special flat affine manifold without boundary equipped with a Gauduchon metric $g$ and a covariant constant volume form. Let $G$ be either a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group or the real locus of a split real form of a complex reductive group. We prove that a flat principal $G$-bundle $E_G$ over $M$ admits a Hermitian-Einstein structure if and only if $E_G$ is polystable. A polystable flat principal $G$--bundle over $M$ admits a unique Hermitian-Einstein connection. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for …
We describe pairs (p,n) such that n-dimensional affine space is fibered by pairwise skew p-dimensional affine subspaces. The problem is closely related with the theorem of Adams on vector fields on spheres and the Hurwitz-Radon theory of composition of quadratic forms.
An affine manifold is a manifold with an affine structure, i.e. a torsion-free flat affine connection. We show that the universal cover of a closed affine 3-manifold $M$ with holonomy group of shrinkable dimension (or discompacité in French) less than or equal to two is diffeomorphic to $\bR^3$. Hence, $M$ is irreducible. This follows from two results: (i) a simply connected affine 3-manifold which is 2-convex is diffeomorphic to $\bR^3$, whose proof using the Morse theory takes most of this paper; and (ii) a closed affine manifold of holonomy of shrinkable dimension less or equal to $d$ is $d…
We obtain integral formulas for a metric-affine space equipped with two complementary orthogonal distributions. The integrand depends on the Ricci and mixed scalar curvatures and invariants of the second fundamental forms and integrability tensors of the distributions. The formulas under some conditions yield splitting of manifolds (including submersions and twisted products) and provide geometrical obstructions for existence of distributions and foliations (or compact leaves of them).
This note proves the geodesic completeness of any compact manifold endowed with a linear connection such that the closure of its holonomy group is compact.
We study the affine quasi-Einstein Equation for homogeneous surfaces. This gives rise through the modified Riemannian extension to new half conformally flat generalized quasi-Einstein neutral signature $(2,2)$ manifolds, to conformally Einstein manifolds and also to new Einstein manifolds through a warped product construction.
