A Sim(n-1,1) affine manifold is an affine manifold whose linear holonomy is contained in the similarity lorentzian group but not in the lorentzian group. The class of similarity lorentzian affine manifolds is a small part in the nice class of conformally lorentzian flat manifolds. In this paper we show that a compact Sim(n-1,1) affine manifold is incomplete. We characterize the universal cover of radiant compact Sim(n-1,1) affine manifolds whose developing map is injective. Let q be the quadratic form which define the Sim(n-1,1) structure, using riemannian foliation theory, we classify compact radiant Sim(n-1,1) affine manifolds M such that D(M') the image of the universal cover M' of M by the developing map D is contained in the upper cone defined q
In this paper, we compute the Bott connections and their curvature on three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups with three different distributions, and we classify affine Ricci solitons associated to the Bott connection on three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups with three different distributions.
In this paper, we classify affine Ricci solitons associated to canonical connections and Kobayashi-Nomizu connections and perturbed canonical connections and perturbed Kobayashi-Nomizu connections on three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups with some product structure.
We describe the compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds admitting a parallel lightlike vector field. The classification of compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds admitting non-isometric affine diffeomorphisms follows, together with the complete description of these morphisms. Such a Lorentzian manifold is in some sense an equivariant deformation of a flat one.
In this paper we study $4$-dimensional affine hypersurfaces with a Lorentzian second fundamental form additionally equipped with an almost symplectic structure $ω$. We prove that the rank of the shape operator is at most one if $R^k\cdot ω=0$ or $\nabla^kω=0$ for some positive integer $k$. This result is the final step in a classification of Lorentzian affine hypersurfaces with higher order parallel almost symplectic forms.
In this paper, we classify three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups on which Ricci tensors associated to Bott connections, canonical connections and Kobayashi-Nomizu connections are Codazzi tensors associated to these connections. We also classify three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie group with the quasi-statistical structure associated to Bott connections, canonical connections and Kobayashi-Nomizu connections.
Weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras of $\so(1,n+1)$ were classified by L. Berard Bergery and A. Ikemakhen. In the present paper a geometrical proof of this result is given. Transitively acting isometry groups of Lobachevskian spaces and transitively acting similarity transformation groups of Euclidean spaces are classified.
In previous papers, a fundamental affine method for studying homogeneous geodesics was developed. Using this method and elementary differential topology it was proved that any homogeneous affine manifold and in particular any homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifold admits a homogeneous geodesic through arbitrary point. In the present paper this affine method is refined and adapted to the pseudo-Riemannian case. Using this method and elementary topology it is proved that any homogeneous Lorentzian manifold of even dimension admits a light-like homogeneous geodesic. The method is illustrated in d…
We consider geodesic flows between hypersurfaces in $\R^n$. However, rather than consider using geodesics in $\R^n$, which are straight lines, we consider an induced flow using geodesics between the tangent spaces of the hypersurfaces viewed as affine hyperplanes. For naturality, we want the geodesic flow to be invariant under rigid transformations and homotheties. Consequently, we do not use the dual projective space, as the geodesic flow in this space is not preserved under translations. Instead we give an alternate approach using a Lorentzian space, which is semi-Riemannian with a metric of…
The Margulis invariant is a function defined on a group of Lorentzian transformations $G$ acting on Minkowski space $\R^{2,1}$, that contains no elliptic elements. The spectrum of $G$ is the sequence of values of the Margulis invariant for all its elements. If the underlying linear group of $G$ is fixed, Drumm and Goldman proved that the spectrum defines the translational part completely. In this note, we strengthen this result by showing that isospectrality holds for any free product of cyclic groups of given rank, up to conjugation in the group of affine transformations of $R^{2,1}$, as long…
Two Kähler metrics on a complex manifold are called c-projectively equivalent if their $J$-planar curves coincide. These curves are defined by the property that the acceleration is complex proportional to the velocity. We give an explicit local description of all pairs of c-projectively equivalent Kähler metrics of arbitrary signature and use this description to prove the classical Yano-Obata conjecture: we show that on a closed connected Kähler manifold of arbitrary signature, any c-projective vector field is an affine vector field unless the manifold is $CP^n$ with (a multiple of) the Fubini…
In this paper, we study the invariant and noninvariant hypersurfaces of (1,1,1) almost contact manifolds, Lorentzian almost paracontact manifolds and Lorentzian para-Sasakian manifolds, respectively. We show that a noninvariant hypersurface of an (1,1,1) almost contact manifold admits an almost product structure. We investigate hypersurfaces of affinely cosymplectic and normal (1,1,1) almost contact manifolds. It is proved that a noninvariant hypersurface of a Lorentzian almost paracontact manifold is an almost product metric manifold. Some necessary and sufficient conditions have been given f…
In abstract Yang-Mills theory the standard instanton construction relies on the Hodge star having real eigenvalues which makes it inapplicable in the Lorentzian case. We show that for the affine connection an instanton-type construction can be carried out in the Lorentzian setting. The Lorentzian analogue of an instanton is a spacetime whose connection is metric compatible and Riemann curvature irreducible ("pseudoinstanton"). We suggest a metric-affine action which is a natural generalization of the Yang-Mills action and for which pseudoinstantons are stationary points. We show that a spaceti…
This paper applies the authors' forthcoming work, "Affine deformations of a three-holed sphere" in Lorentzian geometry to prove a result in hyperbolic geometry. Namely, an infinitesimal deformation of a hyperbolic structure of a three-holed sphere which infinitesimally lengthens the three boundary components infinitesimally lengthens every closed geodesic. The proof interprets the derivative of the geodesic length function as the Margulis invariant (signed marked Lorentzian length spectrum) of the corresponding affine deformation. The aforementioned results imply that the affine deformation is…
We show that the natural S^1-bundle over a projective special Kaehler manifold carries the geometry of a proper affine hypersphere endowed with a Sasakian structure. The construction generalizes the geometry of the Hopf-fibration $\Sr^{2n+1} \longrightarrow \CP^n$ in the context of projective special Kaehler manifolds. As an application we have that a natural circle bundle over the Kuranishi moduli space of a Calabi-Yau threefold is a Lorentzian proper affine hypersphere.
In this paper, the Cartan frames and the equi-affine curvatures are described with the help of the Frenet frames and the Frenet curvatures of a non-null and non-degenerate curve in a 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The constancy of the Frenet curvatures of such a curve always implies the constancy of the equi-affine curvatures. We show that the converse statement does not hold in general. Finally, we study the equi-affine curvatures of null curves in 3-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds, and prove that they are related to their pseudo-torsion.
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on manifolds $(M, c)$ endowed with a pseudoconformal structure $c = CO (n - 1, 1)$ of Lorentzian signature. Such hypersurfaces are of interest in general relativity since they can be models of different types of physical horizons. On a lightlike hypersurface, the authors consider the fibration of isotropic geodesics and investigate their singular points and singular submanifolds. They construct a conformally invariant normalization of a lightlike hypersurface intrinsically connected with its geometry and investigate affine connections i…
We describe up to finite coverings causal flat affine complete Lorentzian manifolds such that the past and the future of any point are closed near this point. We say that these manifolds are strictly causal. In particular, we prove that their fundamental groups are virtually abelian. In dimension 4, there is only one, up to a scaling factor, strictly causal manifold which is not globally hyperbolic. For a generic point of this manifold, either the past or the future is not closed and contains a lightlike straight line.
A classical pp-wave is a 4-dimensional Lorentzian spacetime which admits a nonvanishing parallel spinor field; here the connection is assumed to be Levi-Civita. We generalise this definition to metric compatible spacetimes with torsion and describe basic properties of such spacetimes. We use our generalised pp-waves for constructing new explicit vacuum solutions of quadratic metric-affine gravity.
Second-order symmetric Lorentzian spaces, that is to say, Lorentzian manifolds with vanishing second derivative of the curvature tensor R, are characterized by several geometric properties, and explicitly presented. Locally, they are a product M=M_1 x M_2 where each factor is uniquely determined as follows: M_2 is a Riemannian symmetric space and M_1 is either a constant-curvature Lorentzian space or a definite type of plane wave generalizing the Cahen-Wallach family. In the proper case (i.e., with non-zero first covariant derivative of R at some point), the curvature tensor turns out to be de…
We consider closed manifolds that possess a so called rank one ray structure. That is a (flat) affine structure such that the linear part is given by the products of a diagonal transformation and a commuting rotation. We show that closed manifolds with a rank one ray structure are either complete or their developing map is a cover onto the complement of an affine subspace. This result extends the geometric picture given by Fried on closed similarity manifolds. We prove, in the line of Markus conjecture, that if the rank one ray geometry has parallel volume, then closed manifolds are necessaril…
