We give a systematic construction of uniruled surfaces in positive characteristic. Using this construction, we find surfaces of general type with non-trivial vector fields, surfaces with arbitrarily non-reduced Picard schemes as well as surfaces with inseparable canonical maps. In particular, we show that some previously known pathologies are not sporadic but exist in abundance.
A strongly reflective modular form with respect to an orthogonal group of signature (2,n) determines a Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebra. We find a new geometric application of such modular forms: we prove that if the weight is larger than n then the corresponding modular variety is uniruled. We also construct new reflective modular forms and thus provide new examples of uniruled moduli spaces of lattice polarised K3 surfaces. Finally we prove that the moduli space of Kummer surfaces associated to (1,21)-polarised abelian surfaces is uniruled.
We construct projectors in the ring of correspondences of a complex uniruled 3-fold $X$ which lift the Kuenneth components of the diagonal in singular cohomology and have other properties which were conjectured by J. Murre. Such Murre decompositions have been already obtained for curves, surfaces, abelian varieties and varieties with cell decompositions by the work of Manin, Shermenev, Beauville, Murre et.al.. In particular they define a natural filtration on the Chow groups of $X$ which was conjectured by Bloch and Beilinson. To do this we use Mori theory and construct projectors in the situa…
We prove that the characteristic foliation $F$ on a non-singular divisor $D$ in an irreducible projective hyperkaehler manifold $X$ cannot be algebraic, unless the leaves of $F$ are rational curves or $X$ is a surface. More generally, we show that if $X$ is an arbitrary projective manifold carrying a holomorphic symplectic $2$-form, and $D$ and $F$ are as above, then $F$ can be algebraic with non-rational leaves only when, up to a finite étale cover, $X$ is the product of a symplectic projective manifold $Y$ with a symplectic surface and $D$ is the pull-back of a curve on this surface. When $D…
We study smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces with normal crossings. As a consequence we show that the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is not pseudo-effective in some range, implying that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,6},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,7},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{13,4}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{14,3}$ are uniruled. We provide upper bounds for the Kodaira dimension of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16}$. We also show that the moduli of $(4g+5)$-pointed hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal{H}_{g,4g+5}$ is uniruled. Together with a re…
We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi-Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a \emph{general} Calabi-Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree $(d_1, \cdots, d_k)$ containing a rational curve has codimension at least $\sum_{i=1}^k d_i - 2n +…
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 such that the bicanonical map of S is not birational and let Z be the bicanonical image. In [M.Mendes Lopes, R.Pardini, "Enriques surfaces with eight nodes", Math. Zeit. 241 (4) (2002), 673-683] it is shown that either: i) Z is a rational surface, or ii) K^2_S=3, the bicanonical map is a degree two morphism and Z is birational to an Enriques surface. Up to now no example of case ii) was known. Here an explicit construction of all such surfaces is given. Furthermore it is shown that the corresponding subset of the moduli space of sur…
This paper continues the study of non-general type subvarieties begun in a joint paper with M.Schneider and A.Sommese (Int.L.Math. 10, 1999). We prove uniruledness of a projective manifold containing a submanifold not of general type whose normal bundle has positivity properties and moreover study the rational quotient. We also relate the fundamental groups and prove a cohomological criterion for a manifold to be rationally connected.
A group $G$ is called Jordan if there is a positive integer $J=J_G$ such that every finite subgroup $\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ contains a commutative subgroup $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{B}$ such that $\mathcal{A}$ is normal in $\mathcal{B}$ and the index $[\mathcal{B}:\mathcal{A}] \le J$ (V.L. Popov). In this paper we deal with Jordaness properties of the groups $Bir(X)$ of birational automorphisms of irreducible smooth projective varieties $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. It is known (Yu. Prokhorov - C. Shramov) that $Bir(X)$ is Jordan if $X$ is non-uniruled. On the …
This paper investigates the structure of the automorphism scheme of a smooth canonically polarized surface $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. In particular it is investigated when Aut(X) is not smooth. This is a situation that appears only in positive characteristic and it is closely related to the structure of the moduli stack of canonically polarized surfaces. Restrictions on certain numerical invariants of X are obtained in order for Aut(X) to be smooth or not and information is provided about the structure of the component of Aut(X) containing the identity.…
This paper investigates the geometry of a smooth canonically polarized surface $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ in the case when the automorphism scheme of $X$ is not smooth. This is a situation that appears only in positive characteristic and it is closely related to the structure of the moduli stack of canonically polarized surfaces. Restrictions on certain numerical invariants of $X$ are obtained in order for Aut(X) to be smooth or not and information is provided about the structure of the component of Aut(X) containing the identity. In particular, it i…
In this paper, we will prove subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions for a fibration with possibly singular geometric generic fiber, under certain nefness and relative semi-ampleness conditions. As an application, for a fibration $f: X \to Y$ of a smooth projective threefold over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>5$, under the assumption that $Y$ is of general type and non-uniruled, we prove subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions when general fibers are smooth or when $K_{X/Y}$ is relatively big over $Y$.
In this short note we give a characterization of smooth projective varieties of Picard number one that are separably uniruled but not separably rationally connected. We also give a sufficient condition involving the torsion order and the uniruling index for a smooth Fano variety of Picard number one to be separably rationally connected. As an application, we prove some weak approximation results for Fano complete intersections in positive charactersitic. For example, we show that weak approximation holds at place of strong potentially good reduction for a Fano complete intersection in $\mathbb…
For a smooth curve $B$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, for every $B$-flat complete intersection $X_B$ in $B\times_{\text{Spec}\ k} \mathbb{P}^n_k$ of type $(d_1,\dots,d_c)$, if the Fano index is $\geq 2$ and if $\text{char}(k)>\max(d_1,\dots,d_c)$, we prove weak approximation of $\widehat{\mathcal{O}}_{B,b}$-points of $X_B$ by $k(B)$-points at all places of (strong) potentially good reduction, including all places of good reduction. The key step is the proof that such complete intersections are \emph{separably uniruled by lines}, and even \emph{separably rationally connected}, whenever…
We study the dominant rational maps from a general surface in P^{3} to surfaces of general type. We prove restrictions on the target surfaces, and special properties of the rational maps. We show that for a small degree the general surface has no such map. Moreover a slight improvement of a result of Catanese, on the number of moduli of a surface of general type, is also obtained.
In this short note we prove that the Bloch's conjecture holds for a surface of general type of numerical Godeaux type or some class of numerical Campedelli type, with geometric genus zero equipped with an involution, when the quotient of the surface by the involution is a rational surface.
We construct some complex surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number. These examples arise as fibrations of genus two curves over quaternionic Shimura curves.
We give many examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ for which Bloch's conjecture holds, for all values of $K^2$ except 9. Our surfaces are equipped with an involution.
Quaternionic Shimura surfaces are quotient of the bidisc by an irreducible cocompact arithmetic group. In the present paper we are interested in (smooth) quaternionic Shimura surfaces admitting an automorphism with one dimensional fixed locus; such automorphisms are involutions. We propose a new construction of surfaces of general type with $q=p_{g}=0$ as quotients of quaternionic Shimura surfaces by such involutions. These quotients have finite fundamental group.
We describe the GIT compactification of the moduli of (2,2)-type effective divisors of $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^2$ (i.e., surfaces of the linear system $\vert π_1^*\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(2)\otimes π_2^*\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(2)\vert$ ) which are generically Del Pezzo surfaces of degree two. In order to get the compactification, we characterize stable and semi-stable (2,2)-type surfaces, and also determine the equivalence classes of strictly semi-stable (2,2)-type surfaces. Moreover, we describe the boundary of the moduli of (2,2)-type surfaces.
In this short note we prove that an involution on certain examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$, acts as identity on the Chow group of zero cycles of the relevant surface. In particular we consider examples of such surfaces when the quotient is an Enriques surface and show that the Bloch's conjecture holds for such surfaces.
We complement Catanese's results on isotrivially fibred surfaces by completely describing the components containing an isotrivial surface with monodromy group $\ZZ/2\ZZ$. We also give an example for deformation equivalent isotrivial surfaces with different monodromy group.
We show that an abelian surface embedded in P^N by a very ample line bundle L of type (1,2d) is projectively normal if and only if d>=4. This completes the study of the projective normality of abelian surfaces embedded by complete linear systems.
We show that every supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 2 with Artin invariant less than or equal to 2 is obtained by the Kummer type construction of Schroeer.
In the last years there have been several new constructions of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$, and important progress on their classification. The present paper presents the status of the art on surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$, and gives an updated list of the existing surfaces, in the case where $K^2= 1,...,7$. It also focuses on certain important aspects of this classification.
We focus on Voisin's conjecture on 0-cycles on the self-product of surfaces of geometric genus one, which arises in the context of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration conjecture. We verify this conjecture for the family of Todorov surfaces of type $(2,12)$, giving an explicit description of this family as quotient surfaces of the complete intersection of four quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{6}$. We give some motivic applications.
We establish Noether's inequality for surfaces of general type in positive characteristic. Then we extend Enriques' and Horikawa's classification of surfaces on the Noether line, the so-called Horikawa surfaces. We construct examples for all possible numerical invariants and in arbitrary characteristic, where we need foliations and deformation techniques to handle characteristic 2. Finally, we show that Horikawa surfaces lift to characteristic zero.
We study the moduli space of minimal surfaces of general type with $K_S^2 = 1$ and $p_g = 2$ and show that it is irreducible, has dimension $28$ and admits a compactification which is unirational.
In this paper, we suggest a new approach to study minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ via their Cox rings, especially using the notion of combinatorially minimal Mori dream space introduced by Hausen. First, we study general properties of combinatorially minimal Mori dream surfaces. Then we discuss how to apply these ideas to the study of minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ which are very important but still mysterious objects. In our previous paper, we provided several examples of Mori dream surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ and computed their effective cones explicitl…

We prove that the bicanonical map of a surfaces of general S type with p_g=q=0 is non birational if there exists a pencil on S whose general member is an hyperelliptic curve of genus 3.
In this paper we investigate the asymptotic growth of the number of irreducible and connected components of the moduli space of surfaces of general type corresponding to certain families of surfaces isogenous to a higher product. We obtain a higher growth then the previous growth by Manetti [M97].
We present methods to construct interesting surfaces of general type via $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing of a singular surface obtained from an elliptic surface. By applying our methods to special Enriques surfaces, we construct new examples of a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $π_1=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, and $K^2\le 4$.

In this paper, one of a series devoted to the classification, the moduli spaces and the discovery of new surfaces of general type with geometric genus p_g= 0, we generalize a classical construction method due to Burniat (and revisited by Inoue), constructing surfaces with K^2 = 3 and a with a new fundamental group of order 16.
We continue the work of Braun and Floystad, and Cook bounding the degree of smooth surfaces in P4 not of general type using generic initial ideal theory.
We show that a family of minimal surfaces of general type with p_g = 0, K^2=7, constructed by Inoue in 1994, is indeed a connected component of the moduli space: indeed that any surface which is homotopically equivalent to an Inoue surface belongs to the Inoue family. The ideas used in order to show this result motivate us to give a new definition of varieties, which we propose to call Inoue-type manifolds: these are obtained as quotients \hat{X} / G, where \hat{X} is an ample divisor in a K(Γ, 1) projective manifold Z, and G is a finite group acting freely on \hat{X} . For these type of manif…
Given a minimal surface equipped with a generically finite map to an Abelian variety, we give an optimal bound on the canonical degree of a rational or an elliptic curve. As a corollary, we obtain the finiteness of rational and elliptic curves on any surface of general type with two linearly independent regular one forms.
