We prove that any smooth complex projective variety with generic vanishing index bigger or equal than 2 has birational bicanonical map. Therefore, if X is a smooth complex projective variety X with maximal Albanese dimension and non-birational bicanonical map, then the Albanese image of X is fibered by subvarieties of codimension at most 1 of an abelian subvariety of Alb X.
In the present note we show that any surface of general type with $p_g=2$,$q=1$ and non-birational bicanonical map has a pencil of curves of genus 2. Combining this result with previous ones, one obtains thatan irregular surface $S$ of general type with $χ(S)\geq 2$ and non-birational bicanonical map has a pencil of curves of genus 2.
Let $S$ be a minimal surface of general type with $p_g = q = 1, K_S^2 = 7$. We prove that the degree of the bicanonical map is 1 or 2. Furthermore, if the degree is 2, we describe $S$ by a double cover.
This paper is devoted to the classification of irregular surfaces of general type with $p_g=q=2$ and non birational bicanonical map. The main result is that, if $S$ is such a surface and if $S$ is minimal with no pencil of curves of genus 2, then $S$ is a double cover of a principally polarized abelian surface $(A,Θ)$, with $Θ$ irreducible. The double cover $S\to A$ is branched along a divisor $B\in |2Θ|$, having at most double points and so $K_S^2=4$.
Let $S$ be a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=6$, such that its bicanonical map $\fie\colon S\to\pp^6$ is not birational. The map $\fie$ is a morphism of degree $\le 4$ onto a surface. The case of $°\fie=4$ is completely characterized in [Topology, {\bf 40} (5) (2001), 977--991] and the present paper completes the classification of these surfaces. It is proven that the degree of $\fie$ cannot be equal to 3, and the geometry of surfaces with $°\fie=2$ is analysed in detail. The last section contains three examples of such surfaces, two of which appear to be new.
From the point of view of uniform bounds for the birationality of pluricanonical maps, irregular varieties of general type and maximal Albanese dimension behave similarly to curves. In fact Chen-Hacon showed that, at least when their holomorphic Euler characteristic is positive, the tricanonical map of such varieties is always birational. In this paper we study the bicanonical map. We consider the natural subclass of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension formed by primitive varieties of Albanese general type. We prove that the only such varieties with non-birational bicanonical map are the n…
We prove that if the bicanonical map of a minimal surface of general type S with p_{g}=q=1 and K^2=8 is non birational, then it is a double cover onto a rational surface. An application of this theorem is the complete classification of minimal surfaces of general type with p_{g}=q=1, K^2=8 and nonbirational bicanonical map.
In this note we studied the primitive varieties of general type with $q(X) = dim(X)$ and non-birational bicanonical maps. Let $X$ be such a variety. We bounded the degree of its bicanonical map. If moreover the Albanese variety $Alb(X)$ is simple, we proved that the Euler number $χ(ω_X) = 1$, and $|2K_X|$ separates the points mapped to the same general point via the Albanese map.
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 such that the bicanonical map of S is not birational and let Z be the bicanonical image. In [M.Mendes Lopes, R.Pardini, "Enriques surfaces with eight nodes", Math. Zeit. 241 (4) (2002), 673-683] it is shown that either: i) Z is a rational surface, or ii) K^2_S=3, the bicanonical map is a degree two morphism and Z is birational to an Enriques surface. Up to now no example of case ii) was known. Here an explicit construction of all such surfaces is given. Furthermore it is shown that the corresponding subset of the moduli space of sur…
We study the minimal complex surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=7$ or 8 whose bicanonical map is not birational. In the paper 'The bicanonical map of surfaces with $p_g=0$ and $K^2\ge 7$' we have shown that if $S$ is such a surface, then the bicanonical map has degree 2. Here we describe precisely such surfaces showing that there is a fibration $f\colon S\to \pp^1$ such that: i) the general fibre $F$ of $f$ is a genus 3 hyperelliptic curve; ii) the involution induced by the bicanonical map of $S$ restricts to the hyperelliptic involution of $F$. Furthermore, if $K^2_S=8$, then $f$ …
By a theorem of Reider, a twisted bicanonical system, that means a linear system of divisors numerically equivalent to a bicanonical divisor, on a minimal surface of general type, is base point free if $K^2_S \geq 5$. Twisted bicanonical systems with base points are known in literature only for $K^2=1,2$. We prove in this paper that all surfaces in a family of surfaces with $K^2=3$ constructed in a previous paper with G. Bini and J. Neves have a twisted bicanonical system (different from the bicanonical system) with two base points. We show that the map induced by the above twisted bicanonical…
A minimal surface of general type with $p_g(S)=0$ satisfies $1\le K^2\le 9$ and it is known that the image of the bicanonical map $\fie$ is a surface for $K_S^2\geq 2$, whilst for $K^2_S\geq 5$, the bicanonical map is always a morphism. In this paper it is shown that $\fie$ is birational if $K_S^2=9$ and that the degree of $\fie$ is at most 2 if $K_S^2=7$ or $K_S^2=8$. By presenting two examples of surfaces $S$ with $K_S^2=7$ and 8 and bicanonical map of degree 2, it is also shown that this result is sharp. The example with $K_S^2=8$ is, to our knowledge, a new example of a surface of general …
This paper classifies surfaces of general type $S$ with $p_g=q=1$ having an involution $i$ such that $S/i$ has non-negative Kodaira dimension and that the bicanonical map of $S$ factors through the double cover induced by $i.$ It is shown that $S/i$ is regular and either: a) the Albanese fibration of $S$ is of genus 2 or b) $S$ has no genus 2 fibration and $S/i$ is birational to a $K3$ surface. For case a) a list of possibilities and examples are given. An example for case b) with $K^2=6$ is also constructed.
In this paper some numerical restrictions for surfaces with an involution are obtained. These formulas are used to study surfaces of general type $S$ with $p_g=q=1$ having an involution $i$ such that $S/i$ is a non-ruled surface and such that the bicanonical map of $S$ is not composed with $i.$ A complete list of possibilities is given and several new examples are constructed, as bidouble covers of surfaces. In particular the first example of a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=q=1$ and $K^2=7$ having birational bicanonical map is obtained.
A nodal Enriques surface can have at most 8 nodes. We give an explicit description of Enriques surfaces with 8 nodes, showing that they are quotients of products of elliptic curves by a group isomorphic to $\Z_2^2$ or to $\Z_2^3$ acting freely in codimension 1. We use this result to show that if $S$ is a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0$ such that the image of the bicanonical map is birational to an Enriques surface then $K^2_S=3$ and the bicanonical map is a morphism of degree 2.
We prove that the bicanonical map of a surfaces of general S type with p_g=q=0 is non birational if there exists a pencil on S whose general member is an hyperelliptic curve of genus 3.
We study surfaces of general type $S$ with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=3$ having an involution $i$ such that the bicanonical map of $S$ is not composed with $i$. It is shown that, if $S/i$ is not rational, then $S/i$ is birational to an Enriques surface or it has Kodaira dimension $1$ and the possibilities for the ramification divisor of the covering map $S\rightarrow S/i$ are described. We also show that these two cases do occur, providing an example. In this example $S$ has a hyperelliptic fibration of genus $3$ and the bicanonical map of $S$ is of degree $2$ onto a rational surface.
We shall show that any complex minimal surface of general type with c_1^2 = 2χ-1 having non-trivial 2-torsion divisors, where c_1^2 and χare the first Chern number of a surface and the Euler characteristic of the structure sheaf respectively, has the Euler characteristic χnot exceeding 4. Moreover, we shall give a complete description for the surfaces of the case χ=4, and prove that the coarse moduli space for surfaces of this case is a unirational variety of dimension 29. Using the description, we shall also prove that our surfaces of the case χ= 4 have non-birational bicanonical maps and no …
We construct a new family of minimal smooth surfaces of general type with K^2=7 and p_g= 0. We show that for a surface in this family, its canonical divisor is ample and its bicanonical morphism is birational. We prove that these surfaces satisfy Bloch's conjecture.
The moduli space $\mathscr{M}$ of surfaces of general type with $p_g=q=1, K^2=g=3$ (where $g$ is the genus of the Albanese fibration) was constructed by Catanese and Ciliberto in \cite{CaCi93}. In this paper we characterize the subvariety $\mathscr{M}_2 \subset \mathscr{M}$ corresponding to surfaces containing a genus 2 pencil, and moreover we show that there exists a non-empty, dense subset $\mathscr{M}^0 \subset \mathscr{M}$ which parametrizes isomorphism classes of surfaces with birational bicanonical map.
This paper describes how to compute equations of plane models of minimal Du Val double planes of general type with $p_g=q=1$ and $K^2=2,...,8.$ A double plane with $K^2=8$ having bicanonical map not composed with the associated involution is also constructed. The computations are done using the algebra system Magma.
Let $X,Y$ be two irreducible subvarieties of the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$, and $d\geq 1$ an integer number. The main result of this paper is an algorithm to construct {\bf explicitly}, in terms of $d$ and the ideals defining $X$ and $Y$, a quasi-affine algebraic variety parametrising the set of all birational maps $f$ from $X$ onto $Y$ which can be extended to a self-rational map of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $\leq d$. Based on this result, we propose an approach towards the rationality problem (see Section 3 below), solve it for some simple cases (varieties of general type or curves), an…
The dynamical degree $λ(f)$ of a birational transformation $f$ measures the exponential growth rate of the degree of the formulae that define the $n$-th iterate of $f$. We study the set of all dynamical degrees of all birational transformations of projective surfaces, and the relationship between the value of $λ(f)$ and the structure of the conjugacy class of $f$. For instance, the set of all dynamical degrees of birational transformations of the complex projective plane is a closed and well ordered set of algebraic numbers.
We show that five of Reid's Fano 3-fold hyperurfaces containing at least one compound Du Val singularity of type $cA_n$ have pliability at least two. The two elements of the pliability set are the singular hypersurface itself, and another non-isomorphic Fano hypersurface of the same degree, embedded in the same weighted projective space, but with different compound Du Val singularities. The birational map between them is the composition of two birational links initiated by blowing up two Type I centres on a codimension 4 Fano 3-fold of $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^2$-type having Picard rank…

We study the birational geometry of some moduli spaces of abelian varieties with extra structure: in particular, with a symmetric theta structure and an odd theta characteristic. For a $(d_1,d_2)$-polarized abelian surface, we show how the parities of the $d_i$ influence the relation between canonical level structures and symmetric theta structures. For certain values of $d_1$ and $d_2$, a theta characteristic is needed in order to define Theta-null maps. We use these Theta-null maps and preceding work of other authors on the representations of the Heisenberg group to study the birational geom…
One develops {\em ab initio} the theory of rational/birational maps over reduced, but not necessarily irreducible, projective varieties in arbitrary characteristic. A numerical invariant of a rational map is introduced, called the Jacobian dual rank. It is proved that a rational map in this general setup is birational if and only if the Jacobian dual rank attains its maximal possible value. Even in the "classical" case where the source variety is irreducible there is some gain for this invariant over the degree of the map as it is, on one hand, intrinsically related to natural constructions in…
We classify quartic del Pezzo surface fibrations over the projective line via numerical invariants, giving explicit examples for small values of the invariants. For generic such fibrations, we describe explicitly the geometry of spaces of sections to the fibration, and mappings to the intermediate Jacobian of the total space. We exhibit examples where these are birational, which has applications to arithmetic questions, especially over finite fields.
We consider a dynamics of a generic birational plane map Φ_n: CP^2 \to CP^2, CP^2 -image of the birational mapping (inverse map is also rational)F_n : C^2 \to C^2 and its such important characteristic as the Arnold complexity C_A(k), which is proportional d(k)=deg(Φ_n^k)- a degree of k-iteration of the map Φ_n, on the basis on algebraic-geometrical properties of such maps. Additional importance of this characteristic follows from the Veselov conjecture about the polynomial boundedness of the growth of d(k) for integrable dynamical systems with a discrete time defined by birational plane maps. …
Explicit birational geometry of 3-folds represents a second phase of Mori theory, going beyond the foundational work of the 1980s. This paper is a tutorial and colloquial introduction to the explicit classification of Fano 3-folds (Q-Fano 3-folds), a subject that we hope is nearing completion. With the intention of remaining accessible to beginners in algebraic geometry, we include examples of elementary calculations of graded rings over curves and K3 surfaces. For us, K3 surfaces have at worst Du Val singularities and are polarised by an ample Weil divisor; they occur as the general elephant …
The Bounded Negativity Conjecture predicts that for any smooth complex surface $X$ there exists a lower bound for the selfintersection of reduced divisors on $X$. This conjecture is open. It is also not known if the existence of such a lower bound is invariant in the birational equivalence class of $X$. In the present note we introduce certain constants $H(X)$ which measure in effect the variance of the lower bounds in the birational equivalence class of $X$. We focus on rational surfaces and relate the value of $H({\mathbb P}^2)$ to certain line arrangements. Our main result is Theorem 3.3 an…
Minimal algebraic surfaces of general type with the smallest possible invariants have geometric genus zero and K^2=1 and are usually called "numerical Godeaux surfaces". Although they have been studied by several authors, their complete classification is not known. In this paper we classify numerical Godeaux surfaces with an involution, i.e. with an automorphism of order 2. We prove that they are birationally equivalent either to double covers of Enriques surfaces, or to double planes of two different types: the branch curve either has degree 10 and suitable singularities, originally suggested…
We define normalized versions of Berkovich spaces over a trivially valued field $k$, obtained as quotients by the action of $\mathbb R_{>0}$ defined by rescaling semivaluations. We associate such a normalized space to any special formal $k$-scheme and prove an analogue of Raynaud's theorem, characterizing categorically the spaces obtained in this way. This construction yields a locally ringed $G$-topological space, which we prove to be $G$-locally isomorphic to a Berkovich space over the field $k((t))$ with a $t$-adic valuation. These spaces can be interpreted as non-archimedean models for the…
We give a complete factorization of the invariant factors of resultant matrices built from birational parameterizations of rational plane curves in terms of the singular points of the curve and their multiplicity graph. This allows us to prove the validity of some conjectures about these invariants stated by Chen, Wang and Liu in [J. Symbolic Comput. 43(2):92-117, 2008]. As a byproduct, we also give a complete factorization of the D-resultant for rational functions in terms of the similar data extracted from the multiplicities.
In this thesis we study singular curves on K3 surfaces. Let $\mathcal{B}_g$ denote the stack of polarised K3 surfaces of genus $g$ and set $p(g,k)=k^2(g-1)+1$. There is a stack $ \mathcal{T}^n_{g,k} \to \mathcal{B}_g$ with fibre over the polarised surface $(X,L)$ parametrising all unramified morphisms $f: C \to X$, birational onto their image, with $C$ an integral smooth curve of genus $ p(g,k)-n$ and $f_*C \sim kL$. One can think of $ \mathcal{T}^n_{g,k}$ as parametrising all singular curves on K3 surfaces such that the normalisation map is unramified (or equivalently such that the curve has …
A good canonical projection of a surface $S$ of general type is a morphism to the 3-dimensional projective space P^3 given by 4 sections of the canonical line bundle. To such a projection one associates the direct image sheaf F of the structure sheaf of S, which is shown to admit a certain length 1 symmetrical locally free resolution. The structure theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for such a length 1 locally free symmetrical resolution of a sheaf F on P^3 in order that $Spec (mathcal F)$ yield a canonically projected surface of general type. The result was found in 1983 by the…
