The complex analytic methods have found a wide range of applications in the study of multiplicity-free representations. This article discusses, in particular, its applications to the question of restricting highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs. We present a number of multiplicity-free branching theorems that include the multiplicity-free property of some of known results such as the Clebsh--Gordan--Pieri formula for tensor products, the Plancherel theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces (also for line bundle cases), the Hua--Kostant--Schmid $K$-type formula, and the canonical representations in the sense of Vershik--Gelfand--Graev. Our method works in a uniform manner for both finite and infinite dimensional cases, for both discrete and continuous spectra, and for both classical and exceptional cases.
In this paper, by proving a simple local trace formula for real reductive groups, we prove a multiplicity formula of K-types for all irreducible representations of real reductive groups. This multiplicity formula expresses the K-characters in terms of the Harish-Chandra characters.
We prove a version of the Chevalley Restriction Theorem for the action of a real reductive group G on a topological space X which locally embeds into a holomorphic representation. Assuming that there exists an appropriate quotient X//G for the G-action, we introduce a stratification which is defined with respect to orbit types of closed orbits. Our main result is a description of the quotient X//G in terms of quotients by normalizer subgroups associated to the stratification.
An algebraic group is called semi-reductive if it is a semi-direct product of a reductive subgroup and the unipotent radical. Such a semi-reductive algebraic group naturally arises and also plays a key role in the study of modular representations of non-classical finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in positive characteristic, and some other cases. Let $G$ ba a connected semi-reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. It turns out that $G$ has many same properties as reductive groups, such as the Bruhat decomposition. In this note, we…
Restriction of functions from a reductive p-adic group G to its compact subgroups defines an operator on the Hochschild and cyclic homology of the Hecke algebra of G. We study the commutation relations between this operator and others coming from representation theory: Jacquet functors, idempotents in the Bernstein centre, and characters of admissible representations.
For a connected reductive group G and a finite-dimensional G-module V, we study the invariant Hilbert scheme that parameterizes closed G-stable subschemes of V affording a fixed, multiplicity-finite representation of G in their coordinate ring. We construct an action on this invariant Hilbert scheme of a maximal torus T of G, together with an open T-stable subscheme admitting a good quotient. The fibers of the quotient map classify affine G-schemes having a prescribed categorical quotient by a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We show that V contains only finitely many multiplicity-free G-subva…
We present a conjecture on multiplicity of irreducible representations of a subgroup $H$ contained in the irreducible representations of a group $G$, with $G$ and $H$ having the same derived groups. We point out some consequences of the conjecture, and verification of some of the consequences. We give an explicit example of multiplicity $2$ upon restriction, as well as certain theorems in the context of classical groups where the multiplicity is $1$.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over $\CC$ with a finite dimensional representation $V$. The action of $G$ is said to be skew multiplicity-free (SMF) if the exterior algebra $\bigwedge V$ contains no irreducible representation of $G$ with multiplicity $> 1$. In this paper we classify all such representations.
In the late nineties T. Kobayashi wrote a series of papers in which he established a criterion for the discrete decomposablity of restrictions of unitary representations of reductive Lie groups to reductive subgroups. A key tool in the proof of sufficiency of his criterion was the use of the theory of hyperfunctions to study the microlocal behavior of characters of restrictions to compact subgroups. In this paper we show how to replace this tool by microlocal analysis in the $C^\infty$ category.
We prove exactness of parabolic restriction and induction functors for conjugation equivariant sheaves on a reductive group generalizing a well known result of Lusztig who established this property for character sheaves. We propose a conjectural (but known for character sheaves) t-exactness property of the Harish-Chandra transform and provide an evidence for that conjecture. We also present two applications generalizing some results of Gabber and Loeser on perverse sheaves on an algebraic torus to an arbitrary reductive group.

We prove a geometric criterion for the bounded multiplicity property of "small" infinite-dimensional representations of real reductive Lie groupsin both induction and restrictions. Applying the criterion to symmetric pairs, we give a full description of the triples $H \subset G \supset G'$ such that any irreducible admissible representations of $G$ with $H$-distinguished vectors have the bounded multiplicity property when restricted to the subgroup $G'$. This article also completes the proof of the general results announced in the previous paper [Adv. Math. 2021, Section 7].
The paper is a survey of recent results in geometric representation theory describing group actions which induce multiplicity-free representations in the spaces of holomorphic functions. For connected compact Lie groups of automorphisms of Stein manifolds we characterize such actions in terms of antiholomorphic involutions. Some proofs are given and some results are new. For example, spherical complex spaces are defined for arbitrary real forms of complex reductive groups. Their properties, which we prove here, were known only for compact real forms. We also show that a complex compact homogen…
In this note we prove a certain multiplicity formula regarding the restriction of an irreducible admissible genuine representation of a 2-fold cover $\widetilde{\rm GL}_{2}(E)$ of ${\rm GL}_{2}(E)$ to the 2-fold cover $\widetilde{\rm SL}_{2}(E)$ of ${\rm SL}_{2}(E)$, and find in particular that this multiplicity may not be one, a result that seems to have been noticed before. The proofs follow the standard path via Waldspurger's analysis of theta correspondence between $\widetilde{\rm SL}_{2}(E)$ and ${\rm PGL}_{2}(E)$.
Let (g,k) be a reductive symmetric superpair of even type, i.e. so that there exists an even Cartan subspace a in p. The restriction map S(p^*)^k->S(a^*)^W where W=W(g_0:a) is the Weyl group, is injective. We determine its image explicitly. In particular, our theorem applies to the case of a symmetric superpair of group type, i.e. (k+k,k) with the flip involution where k is a classical Lie superalgebra with a non-degenerate invariant even form (equivalently, a finite-dimensional contragredient Lie superalgebra). Thus, we obtain a new proof of the generalisation of Chevalley's restriction theor…
We prove the multiplicity one case of Lusztig's conjecture on the irreducible characters of reductive algebraic groups for all fields with characteristic above the Coxeter number.
Let A be a character sheaf on a reductive connected group G over an algebraically closed field. Assuming that the characteristic is not bad, we show that for certain conjugacy classes D in G the restriction of A to D is a local system up to shift; we also give a parametrization of unipotent cuspidal character sheaves on G in terms of restrictions to conjugacy classes. Without restriction on characteristic we define canonical bijections from the set of unipotent character sheaves on G (and from the set of unipotent representations of the corresponding split reductive group over a finite field) …
We prove the classification of discrete automorphic representations of GSp$_4$ explained in [Art04], as well as a compatibility between the local Langlands correspondences for GSp$_4$ and Sp$_4$ .
We give a complete classification of the reductive symmetric pairs (G,H) for which the homogeneous space $(G \times H)/diag(H)$ is real spherical in the sense that a minimal parabolic subgroup has an open orbit. Combining with a criterion established in [T. Kobayashi--T. Oshima, Adv. Math. 2013], we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a reductive symmetric pair $(G,H)$ such that the multiplicities for the branching law of the restriction any admissible smooth representation of $G$ to $H$ have finiteness/boundedness property.
In this paper it is shown that the wave front set of a direct integral of singular, irreducible representations of a real, reductive algebraic group is contained in the singular set. Combining this result with the results of the first paper in this series, the author obtains asymptotic results on the occurrence of tempered representations in induction and restriction problems for real, reductive algebraic groups.
The restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a real reductive group $G$ to a reductive subgroup $H$ decomposes into a direct integral of irreducible unitary representations $τ$ of $H$ with multiplicities $m(π,τ)\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$. We show that on the smooth vectors of $π$, the direct integral is pointwise defined. This implies that $m(π,τ)$ is bounded above by the dimension of the space $\operatorname{Hom}_H(π^\infty|_H,τ^\infty)$ of intertwining operators between the smooth vectors, also called symmetry breaking operators, and provides a precise relation between t…
We find upper and lower bounds of the multiplicities of irreducible admissible representations $π$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$ occurring in the induced representations $Ind_H^Gτ$ from irreducible representations $τ$ of a closed subgroup $H$. As corollaries, we establish geometric criteria for finiteness of the dimension of $Hom_G(π,Ind_H^G τ)$ (induction) and of $Hom_H(π|_H,τ)$ (restriction) by means of the real flag variety $G/P$, and discover that uniform boundedness property of these multiplicities is independent of real forms and characterized by means of the complex flag variety.
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space of split rank $1$ and let $K$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. In a previous article the first two authors introduced a notion of cusp forms for $G/H$. We show that the space of cusp forms coincides with the closure of the $K$-finite generalized matrix coefficients of discrete series representations if and only if there exist no $K$-spherical discrete series representations. Moreover, we prove that every $K$-spherical discrete series representation occurs with multiplicity $1$ in the Plancherel decomposition of $G/H$.
We give a classification of the triples (g,g',q) such that Zuckerman's derived functor (g,K)-module A_q(λ) for a θ-stable parabolic subalgebra q is discretely decomposable with respect to a reductive symmetric pair (g,g'). The proof is based on the criterion for discretely decomposable restrictions by the first author and on Berger's classification of reductive symmetric pairs.
Let $V$ be a Weyl module either for a reductive algebraic group $G$ or for the corresponding quantum group $U_q$. If $G$ is defined over a field of positive characteristic $p$, respectively if $q$ is a primitive $l$'th root of unity (in an arbitrary field) then $V$ has a Jantzen filtration. The sum of the positive terms in this filtration satisfies a well known sum formula. If $T$ denotes a tilting module either for $G$ or $U_q$ then we can similarly filter the space $\Hom_G(V,T)$, respectively $\Hom_{U_q}(V,T)$ and there is a sum formula for the positive terms here as well. We give an easy an…
This paper computes the Dirac cohomology $H_D(π)$ of irreducible unitary Harish-Chandra modules $π$ of complex classical groups viewed as real reductive groups. More precisely, unitary representations with nonzero Dirac cohomology are shown to be unitarily induced from unipotent representations. When nonzero, there is a unique, multiplicity free $K-$type in $π$ contributing to $H_D(π)$. This confirms conjectures formulated by the first named author and Pandzic in 2011.
We establish an equality between two multiplicities: one in the restriction of tempered representations of a $p$-adic group to its closed subgroup with the same derived group; and one occurring in their corresponding component groups in Langlands dual sides, so-called $\mathcal{S}$-groups, under working hypotheses about the tempered local Langlands conjecture and the internal structure of tempered $L$-packets. This provides a formula of the multiplicity for $p$-adic groups by means of dimensions of irreducible representations of their $\mathcal{S}$-groups.
For any given bounded symmetric domain, we prove the existence of commutative $C^*$-algebras generated by Toeplitz operators acting on any weighted Bergman space. The symbols of the Toeplitz operators that generate such algebras are defined by essentially bounded functions invariant under suitable subgroups of the group of biholomorphisms of the domain. These subgroups include the maximal compact groups of biholomorphisms. We prove the commutativity of the Toeplitz operators by considering the Bergman spaces as the underlying space of the holomorphic discrete series and then applying known mul…
We prove that the Jacquet restriction functor for a parabolic subgroup of a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field is right adjoint to the parabolic induction functor for the opposite parabolic subgroup, in the generality of smooth group representations on R-modules for any unital ring R in which the residue field characteristic is invertible. Correction: it turned out that the paper contains a mistake (in Lemma 3.4), which the authors have been unable to fix. This renders the proof of the main theorem incomplete.
If $(G,V)$ is a multiplity free space with a one dimensional quotient we give generators and relations for the non-commutative algebra $D(V)^{G'}$ of invariant differential operators under the semi-simple part $G'$ of the reductive group $G$. More precisely we show that $D(V)^{G'}$ is the quotient of a Smith algebra by a completely described two-sided ideal.
Let G be a simple complex algebraic group and let K be a reductive subgroup of G such that the coordinate ring of G/K is a multiplicity free G-module. We consider the G-algebra structure of C[G/K], and study the decomposition into irreducible summands of the product of irreducible G-submodules in C[G/K]. When the spherical roots of G/K generate a root system of type A we propose a conjectural decomposition rule, which relies on a conjecture of Stanley on the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions. With the exception of one case, we show that the rule holds true whenever the root system gen…
We consider symmetric pairs of Lie superalgebras which are strongly reductive and of even type, and introduce a graded Harish-Chandra homomorphism. We prove that its image is a certain explicit filtered subalgebra of the Weyl invariants on a Cartan subspace whose associated graded is the image of Chevalley's restriction map on symmetric invariants. This generalises results of Harish-Chandra and V. Kac, M. Gorelik.
In this paper we propose a construction of generic character sheaves on reductive groups over finite local rings at even levels, whose characteristic functions are higher Deligne--Lusztig characters when the parameters are generic. We formulate a conjecture on the simple perversity of these complexes, and we prove it in the level two case (thus generalised a result of Lusztig from the function field case). We then discuss the induction and restriction functors, as well as the Frobenius reciprocity, based on the perversity.
We discuss recent developments on branching problems of irreducible unitary representations $π$ of real reductive groups when restricted to reductive subgroups. Highlighting the case where the underlying $(g,K)$-modules of $π$ are isomorphic to Zuckerman's derived functor modules $A_q(λ)$, we show various and rich features of branching laws such as infinite multiplicities, irreducible restrictions, multiplicity-free restrictions, and discrete decomposable restrictions. We also formulate a number of conjectures.
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak k\subset\mathfrak g$ be a reductive in $\mathfrak g$ subalgebra. A $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-module is a $\mathfrak g$-module which after restriction to $\mathfrak k$ becomes a direct sum of finite-dimensional $\mathfrak k$-modules. I.Penkov and V.Serganova introduce definition of bounded $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules for reductive subalgebras $\mathfrak k\subset\mathfrak g$, i.e. $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules whose $\mathfrak k$-multiplicities are uniformly bounded. A question arising in this context is, given $\mat…
Let $k'/k$ be a finite purely inseparable field extension and let $G'$ be a reductive $k'$-group. We denote by $G=\R_{k'/k}(G')$ the Weil restriction of $G'$ across $k'/k$, a pseudo-reductive group. This article gives bounds for the exponent of the geometric unipotent radical $\RR_{u}(G_{\bar{k}})$ in terms of invariants of the extension $k'/k$, starting with the case $G'=\GL_n$ and applying these results to the case where $G'$ is a simple group.
Let F be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We consider distributions on GL(n+1,F) which are invariant under the adjoint action of GL(n,F). We prove that any such distribution is invariant with respect to transposition. This implies that the restriction to GL(n) of any irreducible smooth representation of GL(n+1) is multiplicity free. Our paper is based on the recent work [RS] of Steve Rallis and Gerard Schiffmann where they made a remarkable progress on this problem. In [RS], they also show that our result implies multiplicity one theorem for restrictions from the orthogona…
This paper is about the reduced group C*-algebras of real reductive groups, and about Hilbert C*-modules over these C*-algebras. We shall do three things. First we shall apply theorems from the tempered representation theory of reductive groups to determine the structure of the reduced C*-algebra (the result has been known for some time, but it is difficult to assemble a full treatment from the existing literature). Second, we shall use the structure of the reduced C*-algebra to determine the structure of the Hilbert C*-bimodule that represents the functor of parabolic induction. Third, we sha…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$. Under mild restrictions on the characteristic of $\Bbbk$, we show that any $G$-module with a good filtration also has a good filtration as a module for the reductive part of the centralizer of a nilpotent element $x$ in its Lie algebra.
We use character polynomials to obtain a positive combinatorial interpretation of the multiplicity of the sign representation in irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ indexed by two-column and hook partitions. Our method also yields a positive combinatorial interpretation for the multiplicity of the trivial representation of $S_n$ in an irreducible polynomial representation indexed by a hook partition.
We study branching multiplicity spaces of complex classical groups in terms of GL(2) representations. In particular, we show how combinatorics of GL(2) representations are intertwined to make branching rules under the restriction of GL(n) to GL(n-2). We also discuss analogous results for the symplectic and orthogonal groups.
The Burger-Sarnak method shows that the restriction of an automorphic representation of a reductive group to a reductive subgroup has automorphic support. Clozel has conjectured a qualitative refinement of this result, which were first verified and quantified in the $GL_n$ case by Venkatesh. We give a proof of this conjecture in the classical group cases.
The category of all modules over a reductive complex Lie algebra is wild, and therefore it is useful to study full subcategories. For instance, Bernstein, Gelfand and Gelfand introduced a category of modules which provides a natural setting for highest weight modules. In this paper, we define a family of categories which generalizes the BGG category, and we classify the simple modules for a subfamily. As a consequence, we show that some of the obtained categories are semisimple.
We wish to understand how irreducible representations of a group G behave when restricted to a subgroup G' (the branching problem). Our primary concern is with representations of reductive Lie groups, which involve both algebraic and analytic approaches. We divide branching problems into three stages: (A) abstract features of the restriction; (B) branching laws (irreducible decompositions of the restriction); and (C) construction of symmetry breaking operators on geometric models. We could expect a simple and detailed study of branching problems in Stages B and C in the settings that are {\it{…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive subgroup of a complex connected reductive group $\hat{G}$. We are interested in the branching problem. Fix maximal tori and Borel subgroups of $G$ and $\hat G$. Consider the cone $lr(G,\hat G)$ generated by the pairs $(ν,\hat nu)$ of dominant characters such that $V_ν^*$ is a submodule of $V_{\hat nu}$. It is known that $lr(G,\hat G)$ is a closed convex polyhedral cone. In this work, we show that every regular face of $lr(G,\hat G)$ gives rise to a {\it reduction rule} for multiplicities. More precisely, we prove that for $(ν,\hat nu)$ on such a face, the multi…
We study weight posets of weight multiplicity free (=wmf) representations $R$ of reductive Lie algebras. Specifically, we are interested in relations between $\dim R$ and the number of edges in the Hasse diagram of the corresponding weight poset, $# E(R)$. We compute the number of edges and upper covering polynomials for the weight posets of all wmf-representations. We also point out non-trivial isomorphisms between weight posets of different irreducible wmf-representations. Our main results concern wmf-representations associated with periodic gradings or Z-gradings of simple Lie algebras. For…
We study the role of the mirabolic subgroup $P$ of $G=\mathbf{GL}_n(F)$ ($F$ a $p$-adic field) in smooth irreducible representations of $G$ that possess a non-zero invariant functional relative to a subgroup of the form $H_{k} = \mathbf{GL}_k(F)\times \mathbf{GL}_{n-k}(F)$. We show that if a non-zero $H_1$-invariant functional exists on a representation, then every $P\cap H_1$-invariant functional must equal to a scalar multiple of it. When $k>1$, we give a reduction of the same problem to a question about invariant distributions on the nilpotent cone of the tangent space of the symmetric spac…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group scheme acting on a spherical scheme $X$. In the case where $G$ is of type $A_n$, Aizenbud and Avni proved the existence of a number $C$ such that the multiplicity $\dim\hom(ρ,\mathbb{C}[X(F)])$ is bounded by $C$, for any finite field $F$ and any irreducible representation $ρ$ of $G(F)$. In this paper, we generalize this result to the case where $G$ is a connected reductive group scheme over $\mathbb{Z}$, and prove Conjecture A of [1].
In this note we determine the irreducible square integrable representations of a simple group which admits an admissible restriction to a subgroup $H$ locally isomorphic to $SL_2(\mathbb R).$ We show such representation is holomorphic and we determine the essentially unique $H$ with this property as well as multiplicity formulae.
