Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak k\subset\mathfrak g$ be a reductive in $\mathfrak g$ subalgebra. A $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-module is a $\mathfrak g$-module which after restriction to $\mathfrak k$ becomes a direct sum of finite-dimensional $\mathfrak k$-modules. I.Penkov and V.Serganova introduce definition of bounded $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules for reductive subalgebras $\mathfrak k\subset\mathfrak g$, i.e. $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules whose $\mathfrak k$-multiplicities are uniformly bounded. A question arising in this context is, given $\mathfrak g$, to describe all reductive in $\mathfrak g$ bounded subalgebras, i.e. reductive in $\mathfrak g$ subalgebras $\mathfrak k$ for which at least one infinite-dimensional bounded $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-module exists.
In the present paper we describe explicitly all reductive in $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ bounded subalgebras. Our technique is based on symplectic geometry and the notion of spherical variety. We also characterize the irreducible components of the associated varieties of simple bounded $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules.
We say that a finite dimensional Lie algebra is quasi-reductive if it has a linear form whose stabilizer for the coadjoint representation, modulo the center, is a reductive Lie algebra with a center consisting of semisimple elements. Parabolic subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra are not always quasi-reductive (except in types A or C by work of Panyushev). The classification of quasi-reductive parabolic subalgebras in the classical case has been recently achieved in unpublished work of Duflo, Khalgui and Torasso. In this paper, we investigate the quasi-reductivity of biparabolic subalgebras…
This paper generalizes the classification in a paper of Dimitrov and Penkov of Borel subalgebras of gl_infty. Root-reductive Lie algebras are direct limits of finite-dimensional reductive Lie algebras along inclusions preserving the root spaces with respect to nested Cartan subalgebras. A Borel subalgebra of a root-reductive Lie algebra is by definition a maximal locally solvable subalgebra. The main general result of this paper is that a Borel subalgebra of an infinite-dimensional indecomposable root-reductive Lie algebra is the simultaneous stabilizer of a certain type of generalized flag in…
Root-reductive Lie algebras are direct limits of finite-dimensional reductive Lie algebras under injections which preserve the root spaces. It is known that a root-reductive Lie algebra is a split extension of an abelian Lie algebra by a direct sum of copies of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras as well as copies of the three simple infinite-dimensional root-reductive Lie algebras sl_infty, so_infty, and sp_infty. As part of a structure theory program for root-reductive Lie algebras, Cartan subalgebras of the Lie algebra gl_infty were introduced and studied in a paper of Neeb and Penkov. I…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a root-reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $0$ with a splitting Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak{b}$ containing a splitting maximal toral subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}$. We study the category $\bar{\mathcal{O}}$ consisting of all $\mathfrak{h}$-weight $\mathfrak{g}$-modules which are locally $\mathfrak{b}$-finite and have finite-dimensional $\mathfrak{h}$-weight spaces. The focus is on very special Borel subalgebras called the Dynkin Borel subalgebras. This paper serves as an initial passage to the understanding of categories $\ma…
This paper gives a classification of parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras over $\CC$ that are complexifications of parabolic subalgebras of real forms for which Lynch's vanishing theorem for generalized Whittaker modules is non-vacuous. The paper also describes normal forms for the admissible characters in the sense of Lynch (at least in the quasi-split cases) and analyzes the important special case when the parabolic is defined by an even embedded TDS (three dimensional simple Lie algebra).
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. It is well known that any quasi-reductive Lie algebra is stable. However, there are stable Lie algebras which are not quasi-reductive. This raises the question, if for some particular class of non-reductive Lie algebras, there is equivalence between stability and quasi-reductivity. In particular, it was conjectured by Panyushev that these two notions are equivalent for biparabolic subalgebras of a reductive Lie algebra. In this paper, we give a positive answer to this conjecture.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbbm k$ of characteristic zero. We consider the commuting variety $\mathcal C(\mathfrak u)$ of the nilradical $\mathfrak u$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak b$ of a Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$. In case $B$ acts on $\mathfrak u$ with only a finite number of orbits, we verify that $\mathcal C(\mathfrak u)$ is equidimensional and that the irreducible components are in correspondence with the {\em distinguished} $B$-orbits in $\mathfrak u$. We observe that in general $\mathcal C(\mathfrak u)$ is not equidim…
This paper gives a classification of all pairs $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak h)$ with $\mathfrak g$ a simple real Lie algebra and $\mathfrak h < \mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra for which there exists a minimal parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak p < \mathfrak g$ such that $\mathfrak g = \mathfrak h + \mathfrak p$ as vector sum.
If ${\mathfrak g}$ is a real reductive Lie algebra and ${\mathfrak h} < {\mathfrak g}$ is a subalgebra, then $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ is called real spherical provided that ${\mathfrak g} = {\mathfrak h} + {\mathfrak p}$ for some choice of a minimal parabolic subalgebra ${\mathfrak p} \subset {\mathfrak g}$. In this paper we classify all real spherical pairs $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ where ${\mathfrak g}$ is semi-simple but not simple and ${\mathfrak h}$ is a reductive real algebraic subalgebra. The paper is based on the classification of the case where ${\mathfrak g}$ is simple…
The purpose of my Ph.D. research is to define and study an analogue of the classical Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) category $\mathcal{O}$ for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is one of the finitary, infinite-dimensional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$, $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$, $\mathfrak{so}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$, and $\mathfrak{sp}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$. Here, $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. We call these categories "extended categories $\mathcal{O}$" and use the notation $\bar{\mathcal{O}}$. While the categorie…
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra, $\mathfrak h\subset\mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra such that $\mathfrak h^\perp$ is a complementary $\mathfrak h$-submodule of $\mathfrak g$. In 1983, Bogoyavlenski claimed that one obtains a Poisson commutative subalgebra of the symmetric algebra ${\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)$ by taking the subalgebra ${\mathcal Z}$ generated by the bi-homogeneous components of all $H\in{\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)^{\mathfrak g}$. But this is false, and we present a counterexample. We also provide a criterion for the Poisson commutativity of such subalgebras ${\mat…
This is the second paper of a series of papers on a version of categories $\mathcal{O}$ for root-reductive Lie algebras. For some pairs of blocks $\overline{\mathcal{O}}[λ]$ and $\overline{\mathcal{O}}[μ]$, the subcategories whose objects have finite length are equivalence via functors obtained by the direct limits of translation functors. Tilting objects can also…
Birational equivalence of the Zassenhaus varieties for basic classical Lie superalgebras and their purely-even reductive Lie subalgebras in odd characteristic
Let $\gg$ be a complex reductive Lie algebra and $\kk\subset\gg$ be any reductive in $\gg$ subalgebra. We call a $(\gg,\kk)$-module $M$ bounded if the $\kk$-multiplicities of $M$ are uniformly bounded. In this paper we initiate a general study of simple bounded $(\gg,\kk)$-modules. We prove a strong necessary condition for a subalgebra $\kk$ to be bounded (Corollary \ref{cor1.6}), i.e. to admit an infinite-dimensional simple bounded $(\gg,\kk)$-module, and then establish a sufficient condition for a subalgebra $\kk$ to be bounded (Theorem \ref{thGroups2}). As a result we are able to classify a…
Let $\frak g$ be a reductive Lie algebra over $\bold C$. We say that a $\frak g$-module $M$ is a generalized Harish-Chandra module if, for some subalgebra $\frak k \subset\frak g$, $M$ is locally $\frak k$-finite and has finite $\frak k$-multiplicities. We believe that the problem of classifying all irreducible generalized Harish-Chandra modules could be tractable. In this paper, we review the recent success with the case when $\frak k$ is a Cartan subalgebra. We also review the recent determination of which reductive in $\frak g$ subalgebras $\frak k$ are essential to a classification. Finall…
The nilpotent cone of a reductive Lie algebra has a desingularization given by thecotangent bundle of the flag variety. Analogously, the nullcone of a cartesianpower of the algebra has a desingularization given by a vector bundle over theflag variety. As for the nullcone, the subvariety of elements whose componentsare in a same Borel subalgebra, has a desingularization given by a vector bundle overthe flag variety. In this note, some properties of these varieties are given. Forthe study of the commuting variety, the analogous variety to the flag variety isthe closure in the Grassmannian of the…
We prove a general existence result for infinite-dimensional admissible (g;k)-modules, where g is a reductive finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra and k is a reductive in g algebraic subalgebra.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 and let G be a connected reductive group over k. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G and let g and b be the Lie algebras of G and B. Denote the first Frobenius kernels of G and B by G_1 and B_1. Furthermore, denote the algebras of polynomial functions on G and g by k[G] and k[g], and similar for B and b. The group G acts on k[G] via the conjugation action and on k[g] via the adjoint action. Similarly, B acts on k[B] via the conjugation action and on k[b] via the adjoint action. We show that, under certain mild assumptions, the cohomology …
Reductive (or semisimple) algebraic groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras have a rich geometry determined by their parabolic subgroups and subalgebras, which carry the structure of a building in the sense of J. Tits. We present herein an elementary approach to the geometry of parabolic subalgebras, over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero, which does not rely upon the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras. Indeed we derive such structure theory, from root systems to the Bruhat decomposition, from the properties of parabolic subalgebras. As well as constructing the Tits building of a …
We study a version of the BGG category O for Dynkin Borel subalgebras of root-reductive Lie algebras g, such as gl(\infty). We prove results about extension fullness and compute the higher extensions of simple modules by Verma modules. In addition, we show that our category O is Ringel self-dual and initiate the study of Koszul duality. An important tool in obtaining these results is an equivalence we establish between appropriate Serre subquotients of category O for g and category O for finite dimensional reductive subalgebras of g.
The category of all modules over a reductive complex Lie algebra is wild, and therefore it is useful to study full subcategories. For instance, Bernstein, Gelfand and Gelfand introduced a category of modules which provides a natural setting for highest weight modules. In this paper, we define a family of categories which generalizes the BGG category, and we classify the simple modules for a subfamily. As a consequence, we show that some of the obtained categories are semisimple.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A finite dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\mathbb{K}$ is said to be stable if there exists a linear form $g\in\mathfrak{g}^{*}$ and a Zariski open subset in $\mathfrak{g}^{*}$ containing $g$ in which all elements have their stabilizers conjugated under the connected adjoint group. It is well known that any quasi-reductive Lie algebra is stable. However, there are stable Lie algebras which are not quasi-reductive. This raises the question, if for some particular class of non-reductive Lie algebras, there is equiv…
We study cohomological induction for a pair $(\frak g,\frak k)$, $\frak g$ being an infinite dimensional locally reductive Lie algebra and $\frak k \subset\frak g$ being of the form $\frak k_0 + C_\gg(\frak k_0)$, where $\frak k_0\subset\frak g$ is a finite dimensional reductive in $\frak g$ subalgebra and $C_{\gg} (\frak k_0)$ is the centralizer of $\frak k_0$ in $\frak g$. We prove a general non-vanishing and $\frak k$-finiteness theorem for the output. This yields in particular simple $(\frak g,\frak k)$-modules of finite type over $\frak k$ which are analogs of the fundamental series of ge…
Let $G$ be a complex reductive algebraic group, $g$ its Lie algebra and $h$ a reductive subalgebra of $g$, $n$ a positive integer. Consider the diagonal actions $G:g^n, N_G(h):h^n$. We study a relation between the algebra $C[h^n]^{N_G(h)}$ and its subalgebra consisting of restrictions to $h^n$ of elements of $C[g^n]^G$.
Let G be a connected and reductive group over the algebraically closed field K. J-P. Serre has introduced the notion of a G-completely reducible subgroup H of G. In this note, we give a notion of G-complete reducibility -- G-cr for short -- for Lie subalgebras of Lie(G), and we show that if the closed subgroup H < G is G-cr, then Lie(H) is G-cr as well.
The symmetric algebra $S(\mathfrak g)$ of a reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ is equipped with the standard Poisson structure, i.e., the Lie-Poisson bracket. Poisson-commutative subalgebras of $S(\mathfrak g)$ attract a great deal of attention, because of their relationship to integrable systems and, more recently, to geometric representation theory. The transcendence degree of a Poisson-commutative subalgebra ${\mathcal C}\subset S(\mathfrak g)$ is bounded by the "magic number" $\boldsymbol{b}(\mathfrak g)$ of $\mathfrak g$. The "argument shift method" of Mishchenko-Fomenko was basically th…
Let K be a locally compact nonarchimedean field, g a split reductive Lie algebra over K and U(g) its universal enveloping algebra. We study the category C_g of coadmissible modules over the nonarchimedean Arens-Michael envelope of U(g). Let p be a parabolic subalgebra of g. The main result identifies a certain explicitly given highest weight category inside C_g with the classical parabolic BGG category of g relative to p. This paper is in final form, replaces and expands the former preprint 'BGG reciprocity for p-adic Arens-Michael envelopes of semisimple Lie algebras' and appears in Journal o…
Recurrent relations for branching coefficients in affine Lie algebras integrable highest weight modules are studied. The decomposition algorithm based on the injection fan technique is developed for the case of an arbitrary reductive subalgebra. In particular we consider the situation where the Weyl denominator becomes singular with respect to the subalgebra. We demonstrate that for any reductive subalgebra it is possible to define the injection fan and the analogue of the Weyl numerator - the tools that describe explicitly the recurrent properties of branching coefficients. Possible applicati…
For any involution $σ$ of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, one constructs a non-reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak k$, which is called a $\mathbb Z_2$-contraction of $\mathfrak g$. In this paper, we attack the problem of describing maximal commutative subalgebras of the Poisson algebra $S(\mathfrak k)$. This is closely related to the study of the coadjoint representation of $\mathfrak k$ and the set, $\mathfrak k^*_{reg}$, of the regular elements of $\mathfrak k^*$. By our previous results, in the context of $\mathbb Z_2$-contractions, the argument shift method provides maximal commutativ…
Let $G$ be a simple simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. We discuss various properties of nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, which have previously only been considered over $\mathbb{C}$. Using a combination of theoretical and computational methods, we extend to positive characteristic various calculations of de Graaf with nilpotent orbits in exceptional Lie algebras. In particular, we classify those orbits which are reachable, those which satisfy a certain related condition due to Panyushev, and deter…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple complex Lie algebra and let $\mathfrak{t} \subset \mathfrak{g}$ be a toral subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. As a $\mathfrak{t}$-module $\mathfrak{g}$ decomposes as \[\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{s} \oplus \big(\oplus_{ν\in \mathcal{R}} \mathfrak{g}^ν\big)\] where $\mathfrak{s} \subset \mathfrak{g}$ is the reductive part of a parabolic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathcal{R}$ is the Kostant root system associated to $\mathfrak{t}$. When $\mathfrak{t}$ is a Cartan subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$ the decomposition above is nothing but the root decomposition of $\mathfra…
We define and study the variety of reductions for a reductive symmetric pair (G,theta), which is the natural compactification of the set of the Cartan subspaces of the symmetric pair. These varieties generalize the varieties of reductions for the Severi varieties studied by Iliev and Manivel, which are Fano varieties. We develop a theoretical basis to the study these varieties of reductions, and relate the geometry of these variety to some problems in representation theory. A very useful result is the rigidity of semi-simple elements in deformations of algebraic subalgebras of Lie algebras. We…
Let $G$ be a real linear reductive group and $K$ be a maximal compact subgroup. Let $P$ be a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$ with complexified Lie algebra $\mathfrak{p}$, and $\mathfrak{n}$ be its nilradical. In this paper we show that: for any admissible finitely generated moderate growth smooth Fréchet representation $V$ of $G$, the inclusion $V_{K}\subset V$ induces isomorphisms $H_{i}(\mathfrak{n},V_{K})\cong H_{i}(\mathfrak{n},V)$ ($i\geq 0$), where $V_{K}$ denotes the $(\mathfrak{g},K)$ module of $K$ finite vectors in $V$. This is called Casselman's comparison theorem. As a consequence…
Let $G$ be a split reductive $p$-adic group. Let ${\mathcal H}(G)$ be its Hecke algebra and let ${\mathcal C}(G)\supset {\mathcal H}(G)$ be the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra. The purpose of this note is to give a spectral interpretation of Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra $J$ (which contains the Iwahori part of ${\mathcal H}(G)$ as a subalgebra), which shows that $J$ is a subalgebra of ${\mathcal C} (G)$. This spectral description also allows to define a version of $J$ beyond the Iwahori component - i.e. we define certain subalgebra ${\mathcal J}(G)$ of ${\mathcal C}(G)$ which contains ${\…
Given a finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra g equipped with a nondegenerate, symmetric, invariant bilinear form B, let V_k(g,B) denote the universal affine vertex algebra associated to g and B at level k. For any reductive group G of automorphisms of V_k(g,B), we show that the invariant subalgebra V_k(g,B)^G is strongly finitely generated for generic values of k. This implies the existence of a new family of deformable W-algebras W(g,B,G)_k which exist for all but finitely many values of k.
Let $\frak g$ be a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and $\frak k$ be a reductive in $\frak g$-subalgebra. Let $M$ be a finitely generated (possibly, infinite-dimensional) $\frak g$-module. We say that $M$ is a $(\frak g, \frak k)$-module if $M$ is a direct sum of a (possibly, infinite) amount of simple finite-dimensional $\frak k$-modules. We say that $M$ is of finite type if $M$ is a $(\frak g, \frak k)$-module and Hom$_\frak k(V, M)<\infty$ for any simple $\frak k$-module $V$. Let $X$ be a variety of all Borel subalgebras of $\frak g$. Let $M$ be a…
We provide results on the smoothness of normalisers in connected reductive algebraic groups $G$ over fields $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. Specifically we we give bounds on $p$ which guarantee that normalisers of subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$ in $G$ are smooth, i.e.\ so that the Lie algebras of these normalisers coincide with the infinitesimal normalisers. One of our main tools is to exploit cohomology vanishing of small dimensional modules. Along the way, we obtain complete reducibility results for small dimensional modules in the spirit of similar results due to Jantzen, Guralnick, Serr…
In this paper, using Bourbaki's convention, we consider a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g\subset\mathfrak g\mathfrak l_m$ of type B, C or D and a parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak p$ of $\mathfrak g$ associated with a Levi factor composed essentially, on each side of the second diagonal, by successive blocks of size two, except possibly for the first and the last ones. Extending the notion of a Weierstrass section introduced by Popov to the coadjoint action of the truncated parabolic subalgebra associated with $\mathfrak p$, we construct explicitly Weierstrass sections, which give the polynomial…
In this paper, we explore natural connections among the representations of the extended affine Lie algebra $\widehat{sl_N}(\mathbb{C}_q)$ with $\mathbb{C}_q=\mathbb{C}_q[t_0^{\pm1},t_1^{\pm1}]$ an irrational quantum 2-torus, the simple affine vertex algebra $L_{\widehat{sl_{\infty}}}(\ell,0)$ with $\ell$ a positive integer, and Levi subgroups $G$ of $GL_\ell(\mathbb{C})$. First, we give a canonical isomorphism between the category of integrable restricted $\widehat{sl_N}(\mathbb{C}_q)$-modules of level $\ell$ and that of equivariant quasi $L_{\widehat{sl_{\infty}}}(\ell,0)$-modules. Second, we…
In this article we review the main results of the earlier papers [I. Penkov, K. Styrkas, Tensor representations of infinite-dimensional root-reductive Lie algebras, in Developments and Trends in Infinite-Dimensional Lie Theory, Progress in Mathematics 288, Birkhäuser, 2011, pp. 127-150], [I. This paper is a review of results on generalized Harish-Chandra modules in the framework of cohomological induction. The main results, obtained during the last 10 years, concern the structure of the fundamental series of $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})-$modules, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is a semisimple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak{k}$ is an arbitrary algebraic reductive in $\mathfrak{g}$ subalgebra. These results lead to a classification of simple $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})-$modules of finite type with generic minimal $\mathfrak{k}-$types, which we state. We establish a new result about the Fernando-…
Let $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ be a real reductive Lie group and $G'_{\mathbb{R}}$ a reductive subgroup of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ such that $\mathfrak{g'}$ is algebraic in $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we consider restrictions of irreducible representations of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ to $G'_{\mathbb{R}}$ and induced representations of irreducible representations of $G'_{\mathbb{R}}$ to $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. Our main concern is when such a representation has uniformly bounded multiplicities, i.e. the multiplicities in the representation are (essentially) bounded. We give characterizations of the uniform boundedness by p…
For any reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and commutative, associative, unital algebra $S$, we give a complete classification of the simple weight modules of $\mathfrak{g}\otimes S $ with finite weight multiplicities. In particular, any such module is parabolically induced from a simple admissible module for a Levi subalgebra. Conversely, all modules obtained in this way have finite weight multiplicities. These modules are isomorphic to tensor products of evaluation modules at distinct maximal ideals of $S$. Our results also classify simple Harish-Chandra modules up to isomorphism for all c…
Let ${\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)$ be the symmetric algebra of a reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ equipped with the standard Poisson structure. If ${\mathcal C}\subset\mathcal S(\mathfrak g)$ is a Poisson-commutative subalgebra, then ${\rm trdeg\,}{\mathcal C}\le\boldsymbol{b}(\mathfrak g)$, where $\boldsymbol{b}(\mathfrak g)=(\dim\mathfrak g+{\rm rk}\mathfrak g)/2$. We present a method for constructing the Poisson-commutative subalgebra $\mathcal Z_{\langle\mathfrak h,\mathfrak r\rangle}$ of transcendence degree $\boldsymbol{b}(\mathfrak g)$ via a vector space decomposition $\mathfrak g=\math…
Let g be a semisimple complex Lie algebra and k in g be any algebraic subalgebra reductive in g. For any simple finite dimensional k-module V, we construct simple (g; k)-modules M with finite dimensional k-isotypic components such that V is a k-submodule of M and the Vogan norm of any simple k-submodule V' of M; V' not isomorphic to V, is greater than the Vogan norm of V . The (g; k)-modules M are subquotients of the fundamental series of (g; k)-modules introduced in [PZ2].
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$, and assume that the characteristic of $k$ is zero or a pretty good prime for $G$. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$ and let $\mathfrak p$ be the Lie algebra of $P$. We consider the commuting variety $\mathcal C(\mathfrak p) = \{(X,Y) \in \mathfrak p \times \mathfrak p \mid [X,Y] = 0\}$. Our main theorem gives a necessary and sufficient condition for irreducibility of $\mathcal C(\mathfrak p)$ in terms of the modality of the adjoint action of $P$ on the nilpotent variety of $\mathfrak p$. As a conseque…
For $G$ a connected, reductive group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of large characteristic, we use the canonical Springer isomorphism between the nilpotent variety of $\mathfrak{g}:=\mathrm{Lie}(G)$ and the unipotent variety of $G$ to study the projective variety of elementary subalgebras of rank $r$, denoted $\mathbb{E}(r,\mathfrak{g})$. In the case that $G$ is defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$, we define the category of $\mathbb{F}_p$-expressible subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$, and prove that this category is isomorphic to Quillen's category of elementary abelian subgroups of the finite Ch…
We investigate the structure of the ring ${\mathbb D}_G(X)$ of $G$-invariant differential operators on a reductive spherical homogeneous space $X=G/H$ with an overgroup $\widetilde{G}$. We consider three natural subalgebras of ${\mathbb D}_G(X)$ which are polynomial algebras with explicit generators, namely the subalgebra ${\mathbb D}_{\widetilde{G}}(X)$ of $\widetilde{G}$-invariant differential operators on $X$ and two other subalgebras coming from the centers of the enveloping algebras of $\mathfrak g$ and $\mathfrak k$, where $K$ is a maximal proper subgroup of $G$ containing $H$. We show t…
In the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups, many objects have finiteness properties. For example, the lengths of Verma modules and principal series representations are finite, and more precisely, they are bounded. In this paper, we introduce a notion of uniformly bounded families of holonomic $\mathscr{D}$-modules to explain and find such boundedness properties. A uniform bounded family has good properties. For instance, the lengths of modules in the family are bounded and the uniform boundedness is preserved by direct images and inverse images. By the Beilinson--Bernstein corre…
We discuss the branching problem for generalized Verma modules $M_λ(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak p)$ applied to couples of reductive Lie algebras $\bar{\mathfrak g}\hookrightarrow \mathfrak g$. The analysis is based on projecting character formulas to quantify the branching, and on the action of the center of $U(\bar{\mathfrak g})$ to explicitly construct singular vectors realizing part of the branching. We demonstrate the results on the pair $\mathrm{Lie}G_2\hookrightarrow{so(7)}$ for both strongly and weakly compatible with $i(\mathrm {Lie} G_2)$ parabolic subalgebras and a large class of inducing…
We initiate a new line of investigation on branching problems for generalized Verma modules with respect to complex reductive symmetric pairs (g,k). Here we note that Verma modules of g may not contain any simple module when restricted to a reductive subalgebra k in general. In this article, using the geometry of K_C orbits on the generalized flag variety G_C/P_C, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the triple (g,k, p) such that the restriction X|_k always contains simple k-modules for any g-module $X$ lying in the parabolic BGG category O^p attached to a parabolic subalgebra p of …

A subalgebra of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{g}$ determines $\mathfrak{h}$-representation $ρ$ on $\mathfrak{m}=\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{h}$. In this note we discuss how to reconstruct $\mathfrak{g}$ from $(\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{m},ρ)$. In other words, we find all the ingredients for building non-reductive Klein geometries. The Lie algebra cohomology plays a decisive role here.
In this paper we construct resolutions of finite dimensional irreducible gl(m|n)-modules in terms of generalized Verma modules. The resolutions are determined by the Kostant cohomology groups and extend the strong (Lepowsky-)Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolutions to the setting of Lie superalgebras. It is known that such resolutions for finite dimensional representations of Lie superalgebras do not exist in general. Thus far they have only been discovered for gl(m|n) in case the parabolic subalgebra has reductive part equal to gl(m)+gl(n) and for tensor modules. In the current paper we prove th…
Let V be a finite dimensional representation of the connected complex reductive group H. Denote by G the derived subgroup of H and assume that the categorical quotient of V by G is one dimensional. In this situation there exists a homomorphism, denoted by rad, from the algebra A of G-invariant differential operators on V to the first Weyl algebra. We show that the image of rad is isomorphic to the spherical subalgebra of a Cherednik algebra, whose parameters are determined by the b-function of the relative invariant associated to the prehomogeneous vector space (H : V). If (H : V) is furthemor…
It is demonstrated that decompositions of integrable highest weight modules of a simple Lie algebra with respect to its reductive subalgebra obey the set of algebraic relations leading to the recursive properties for the corresponding branching coefficients. These properties are encoded in the special element (of the formal algebra E(g)) Gamma_(a ->g) that describes the injection and is called the fan. In the simplest case, when "a" is a Cartan subalgebra of g, the recursion procedure generates the weight diagram of the module L(g). When applied to a reduction of highest weight modules the rec…
