Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra, $\mathfrak h\subset\mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra such that $\mathfrak h^\perp$ is a complementary $\mathfrak h$-submodule of $\mathfrak g$. In 1983, Bogoyavlenski claimed that one obtains a Poisson commutative subalgebra of the symmetric algebra ${\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)$ by taking the subalgebra ${\mathcal Z}$ generated by the bi-homogeneous components of all $H\in{\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)^{\mathfrak g}$. But this is false, and we present a counterexample. We also provide a criterion for the Poisson commutativity of such subalgebras ${\mathcal Z}$. As a by-product, we prove that ${\mathcal Z}$ is Poisson commutative if $\mathfrak h$ is abelian and describe ${\mathcal Z}$ in the special case when $\mathfrak h$ is a Cartan subalgebra. In this case, ${\mathcal Z}$ appears to be polynomial and has the maximal transcendence degree $(\mathrm{dim}\,\mathfrak g+\mathrm{rk}\,\mathfrak g)/2$.
We prove a Weyl Harish-Chandra integration formula for the action of a reductive dual pair on the corresponding symplectic space $W$. As an intermediate step, we introduce a notion of a Cartan subspace and a notion of an almost semisimple element in the symplectic space $W$. We prove that the almost semisimple elements are dense in $W$. Finally, we provide estimates for the orbital integrals associated with the different Cartan subspaces in $W$.
In this article, we study the elements with disconnected centralizer in the Brauer complex associated to a simple algebraic group G defined over a finite field with corresponding Frobenius map F and derive the number of F-stable semisimple classes of G with disconnected centralizer when the order of the fundamental group has prime order. We also discuss extendibility of semisimple characters to their inertia group in the full automorphism group. As a consequence, we prove that "twisted" and "untwisted" simple groups of type E_6 are "good" in defining characteristic, which is a contribution to …
We prove an explicit formula for the invariant $μ(\Lg)$ for finite-dimensional semisimple, and reductive Lie algebras $\Lg$ over $\C$. Here $μ(\Lg)$ is the minimal dimension of a faithful linear representation of $\Lg$. The result can be used to study Dynkin's classification of maximal reductive subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras.
A semisimple algebraic tensor category over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero is the representation category of all finite dimensional twisted super representations of an affine reductive supergroup G over k. Such a supergroup is reductive if and only if its connected component is reductive. The connected component is reductive if and only if the Lie superalgebra divided by its center is a product of simple Lie algebras of classical type and Lie superalgebras spo(1,2r) of the orthosymplectic types BC_r.
A Lie algebra is said to be generalised reductive if it is a direct sum of a semisimple Lie algebra and a commutative radical. In this paper we extend the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ over complex semisimple Lie algebras to the category $\mathcal {O'}$ over complex generalised reductive Lie algebras. Then we make a preliminary research on the highest weight modules and the projective modules in this new category $\mathcal {O'}$, and generalize some conclusions in the classical case. As a critical difference from the complex semisimple Lie algebra case, we prove that there is no projective module…
If ${\mathfrak g}$ is a real reductive Lie algebra and ${\mathfrak h} < {\mathfrak g}$ is a subalgebra, then $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ is called real spherical provided that ${\mathfrak g} = {\mathfrak h} + {\mathfrak p}$ for some choice of a minimal parabolic subalgebra ${\mathfrak p} \subset {\mathfrak g}$. In this paper we classify all real spherical pairs $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ where ${\mathfrak g}$ is semi-simple but not simple and ${\mathfrak h}$ is a reductive real algebraic subalgebra. The paper is based on the classification of the case where ${\mathfrak g}$ is simple…
Let G be an almost simple reductive group with Weyl group W. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G. Let C be an elliptic conjugacy class in W and let w be an element of minimal length of C. We investigate the existence of a semisimple class of G whose intersection with BwB has dimension dim(B). We show that in good characteristic such a semisimple class exists almost always.
We introduce a new notion of rank for unitary representations of semisimple groups over a local field of characteristic zero. The theory is based on Kirillov's method of orbits for nilpotent groups over local fields. When the semisimple group is classical, we prove that the new theory is essentially equivalent to Howe's theory of N-rank.
We say that a finite dimensional Lie algebra is quasi-reductive if it has a linear form whose stabilizer for the coadjoint representation, modulo the center, is a reductive Lie algebra with a center consisting of semisimple elements. Parabolic subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra are not always quasi-reductive (except in types A or C by work of Panyushev). The classification of quasi-reductive parabolic subalgebras in the classical case has been recently achieved in unpublished work of Duflo, Khalgui and Torasso. In this paper, we investigate the quasi-reductivity of biparabolic subalgebras…
Suppose that $\tilde{G}$ is a connected reductive group defined over a field $k$, and $Γ$ is a finite group acting via $k$-automorphisms of $\tilde{G}$ satisfying a certain quasi-semisimplicity condition. Then the connected part of the group of $Γ$-fixed points in $\tilde{G}$ is reductive. We axiomatize the main features of the relationship between this fixed-point group and the pair $(\tilde{G},Γ)$, and consider any group $G$, not just the $Γ$-fixed points of $\tilde{G}$, satisfying the axioms. (In fact, the axioms do not require $Γ$ to act on all of $\tilde{G}$.) If both $\tilde{G}$ and $G$ …
Let $G$ be a complex reductive algebraic group, $g$ its Lie algebra and $h$ a reductive subalgebra of $g$, $n$ a positive integer. Consider the diagonal actions $G:g^n, N_G(h):h^n$. We study a relation between the algebra $C[h^n]^{N_G(h)}$ and its subalgebra consisting of restrictions to $h^n$ of elements of $C[g^n]^G$.
For semisimple Lie superalgebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, whose category of finite dimensional super representations is semisismple, we classify all irreducible super representations for which the alternating or symmetric square representation is irreducible or decomposes into an irreducible representation and a trivial representation.
Let $G$ be a reductive group in the Harish-Chandra class e.g. a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center, or the group of real points of a connected reductive algebraic group defined over $\R$. Let $σ$ be an involution of the Lie group $G$, $H$ an open subgroup of the subgroup of fixed points of $σ$. One decomposes the elements of $L^2(G/H)$ with the help of joint eigenfunctions under the algebra of left invariant differential operators under $G$ on $G/H$.
Let G be a semisimple algebraic Lie group and H a reductive subgroup. We find geometrically the best even integer p for which the representation of G in L^2(G/H) is almost L^{p}. As an application, we give a criterion which detects whether this representation is tempered.
Let G be a reductive group over a non-archimedean local field k. We provide necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for all tori of G to split over a tamely ramified extension of k. We then show the existence of good semisimple elements in every Moy-Prasad filtration coset of the group G(k) and its Lie algebra, assuming the above sufficient conditions are met.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field %$k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. Our first aim in this note is to give concise and uniform proofs for two fundamental and deep results in the context of Serre's notion of $G$-complete reducibility, at the cost of less favourable bounds. Here are some special cases of these results: Suppose that the index $(H:H^\circ)$ is prime to $p$ and that $p > 2\dim V-2$ for some faithful $G$-module $V$. Then the following hold: (i) $V$ is a semisimple $H$-module if and only if $H$ is $G$-completely reducible; (ii) $…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over the complex field and O_h be a closed adjoint orbit through a semisimple element h. By a result of Borho and Kraft (1979), it is known that the asymptotic cone of the orbit O_h is the closure of a Richardson nilpotent orbit corresponding to a parabolic subgroup whose Levi component is the centralizer Z_G(h) in G. In this paper, we prove an analogue on a semisimple orbit for a symmetric pair (G, K).
We prove that any connected reductive group of semisimple $F$-rank 1 over a $p$-adic field admits an irreducible admissible supersingular mod-$p$ representation. This establishes one of the missing cases in Vignéras' existence proof for general reductive groups.
For a locally compact, totally disconnected group $G$, a subgroup $H$ and a character $χ:H \to \mathbb{C}^{\times}$ we define a Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_χ$ and explore the connection between commutativity of $\mathcal{H}_χ$ and the $χ$-Gelfand property of $(G,H)$, i.e. the property $\mathrm{dim}_\mathbb{C}(ρ^*)^{(H,χ^{-1})} \leq 1$ for every $ρ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)$, the irreducible representations of $G$. We show that the conditions of the Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion imply commutativity of $\mathcal{H}_χ$, and verify in several simple cases that commutativity of $\mathcal{H}_χ$ is equivalent to…
The Harish-Chandra--Howe local character expansion expresses the characters of reductive, $p$-adic groups in terms of Fourier transforms of nilpotent orbital integrals on their Lie algebras, and Murnaghan--Kirillov theory expresses many characters of reductive, $p$-adic groups in terms of Fourier transforms of semisimple orbital integrals (also on their Lie algebras). In many cases, the evaluation of these Fourier transforms seems intractable; but, for $\operatorname{SL}_2$, the nilpotent orbital integrals have already been computed. In this paper, we use a variant of Huntsinger's integral for…
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak k\subset\mathfrak g$ be a reductive in $\mathfrak g$ subalgebra. A $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-module is a $\mathfrak g$-module which after restriction to $\mathfrak k$ becomes a direct sum of finite-dimensional $\mathfrak k$-modules. I.Penkov and V.Serganova introduce definition of bounded $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules for reductive subalgebras $\mathfrak k\subset\mathfrak g$, i.e. $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak k)$-modules whose $\mathfrak k$-multiplicities are uniformly bounded. A question arising in this context is, given $\mat…
Let K be a locally compact nonarchimedean field, g a split reductive Lie algebra over K and U(g) its universal enveloping algebra. We study the category C_g of coadmissible modules over the nonarchimedean Arens-Michael envelope of U(g). Let p be a parabolic subalgebra of g. The main result identifies a certain explicitly given highest weight category inside C_g with the classical parabolic BGG category of g relative to p. This paper is in final form, replaces and expands the former preprint 'BGG reciprocity for p-adic Arens-Michael envelopes of semisimple Lie algebras' and appears in Journal o…
Reductive (or semisimple) algebraic groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras have a rich geometry determined by their parabolic subgroups and subalgebras, which carry the structure of a building in the sense of J. Tits. We present herein an elementary approach to the geometry of parabolic subalgebras, over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero, which does not rely upon the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras. Indeed we derive such structure theory, from root systems to the Bruhat decomposition, from the properties of parabolic subalgebras. As well as constructing the Tits building of a …
Let G be a connected reductive group defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p > 0. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, when p is a good prime, we give a new proof of the ``order formula'' of D. Testerman for unipotent elements in G; moreover, we show that the same formula determines the p-nilpotence degree of the corresponding nilpotent elements in the Lie algebra of G. Second, if G is semisimple and p is sufficiently large, we show that G always has a faithful representation (r,V) with the property that the exponential of dr(X) lies in r(G) for each p-nilpote…
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple noncompact real Lie group and let $ρ: G \longrightarrow \mathrm{SL}(V)$ be a representation on a finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\mathbb R$, with $ρ(G)$ closed in $\mathrm{SL}(V)$. Identifying $G$ with $ρ(G)$, we assume there exists a $K$-invariant scalar product $\mathtt g$ such that $G=K\exp(\mathfrak p)$, where $K=\mathrm{SO}(V,\mathtt g)\cap G$, $\mathfrak p=\mathrm{Sym}_o (V,\mathtt g)\cap \mathfrak g$ and $\mathfrak g$ denotes the Lie algebra of $G$. Here $\mathrm{Sym}_o (V,\mathtt g)$ denotes the set of symmetric endomorphisms with trace zero.…
We carry an intrinsic approach to the study of the connectedness of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_G$ of $G$-Higgs bundles, over a compact Riemann surface, when $G$ is a complex reductive (not necessarily connected) Lie group. We prove that the number of connected components of $\mathcal{M}_G$ is indexed by the corresponding topological invariants. In particular, this gives an alternative proof of the counting by J. Li of the number of connected components of the moduli space of flat $G$-connections in the case in which $G$ is connected and semisimple.
Let G be a connected reductive group (over $\mathbb{C}$) and H a connected semisimple subgroup. The dimension data of H (realative to its given embedding in G) is the collection of the numbers $\{{\rm dim} V^{H}\}$, where V runs over all the finite dimensional representations of G. By a Theorem of Larsen-Pink ([L-P90]), the dimension data determines H up to isomorphism, and if G = GL (n) even up to conjugacy. Professor Langlands raised the question as to whether the strong (conjugacy) result holds for arbitrary G. In this paper We provided the following (negative) answer: If H is simple of typ…
In this paper we investigate the structure of intermediate vertex algebras associated with a maximal conformal embedding of a reductive Lie algebra in a semisimple Lie algebra of classical type.

In this paper we give a combinatorial characterization of projections of geodesics in Euclidean buildings to Weyl chambers. We apply these results to the representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups and to spherical Hecke rings associated with nonarchimedean reductive Lie groups. Our main application is a generalization of the saturation theorem of Knutson and Tao for SL(n) to other complex semisimple Lie groups.
In this paper we classify and give Kazhdan-Lusztig type character formulas for equivariantly irreducible representations of Lie algebras of reductive algebraic groups over a field of large positive characteristic. The equivariance is with respect to a group whose connected component is a torus. Character computation is done in two steps. First, we treat the case of distinguished $p$-characters: those that are not contained in a proper Levi. Here we essentially show that the category of equivariant modules we consider is a cell quotient of an affine parabolic category $\mathcal{O}$. For this, w…
For any involution $σ$ of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, one constructs a non-reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak k$, which is called a $\mathbb Z_2$-contraction of $\mathfrak g$. In this paper, we attack the problem of describing maximal commutative subalgebras of the Poisson algebra $S(\mathfrak k)$. This is closely related to the study of the coadjoint representation of $\mathfrak k$ and the set, $\mathfrak k^*_{reg}$, of the regular elements of $\mathfrak k^*$. By our previous results, in the context of $\mathbb Z_2$-contractions, the argument shift method provides maximal commutativ…
Given a number field $F$ and a reductive group $G$ over $F$, the unitary dual $\hat{G(\mathbb{A}_F)}$ of the adelic group $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$ and the Placherel measure $ν_{G(\mathbb{A}_F)}$ on it can be determined by the Plancherel measure of its local groups $G(F_v)$. Given a subset $X\subset \hat{G(\mathbb{A}_F)}$ of finite Plancherel measure, let $H_X$ be the direct integral of the irreducible representations in $X$. Besides a $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$-module and a $G(F)$-module, $H_X$ is also a module over the group von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(G(F))$, hence there is a canonical dimension $\dim_…
In math.RT/0205144 we observed that, on the level of derived categories, representations of the Lie algebra of a semisimple algebraic group over a field of finite characteristic with a given (generalized) regular central character can be identified with coherent sheaves on the formal neighborhood of the corresponding (generalized) Springer fiber. In the present paper we treat singular central characters. The basic step is the Beilinson-Bernstein localization of modules with a fixed (generalized) central character as sheaves on the partial flag variety corresponding to the singularity of the ch…
Let $Γ$ be a discrete subgroup of a unimodular locally compact group $G$. In Math. Ann. 388, 4251-4305 (2024), it was shown that the $L_p$ norm of a Fourier multiplier $m$ on $Γ$ can be bounded locally by its $L_p$-norm on $G$, modulo a constant $c(A)$ which depends on the support $A$ of $m$. In the context where $G$ is a connected Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we develop tools to find explicit bounds on $c(A)$. We show that the problem reduces to: 1) The adjoint representation of the semisimple quotient $\mathfrak{s} = \mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{r}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ by the radical $…
Let G be a real semisimple algebraic Lie group and H a real reductive algebraic subgroup. We describe the pairs (G,H) for which the representation of G in $L^2(G/H)$ is tempered. When G and H are complex Lie groups, the temperedness condition is characterized by the fact that the stabilizer in H of a generic point on G/H is virtually abelian.
In this note, we show that the free generators of the Mishchenko-Fomenko subalgebra of a complex reductive Lie algebra, constructed by the argument shift method at a regular element, form a regular sequence. This result was proven by Serge Ovsienko in the type A at a regular and semisimple element. Our approach is very different, and is strongly based on geometric properties of the nilpotent bicone.
The category of all modules over a reductive complex Lie algebra is wild, and therefore it is useful to study full subcategories. For instance, Bernstein, Gelfand and Gelfand introduced a category of modules which provides a natural setting for highest weight modules. In this paper, we define a family of categories which generalizes the BGG category, and we classify the simple modules for a subfamily. As a consequence, we show that some of the obtained categories are semisimple.
In this paper, we study the index for several natural classes of non-reductive subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras. Namely, we look at parabolic subalgebras, centralisers of nilpotent elements, and the normalisers of the centralisers. We discuss a conjecture of Elashvili to the effect that the index of any centraliser is equal to the rank of the semisimple algebra in question. It is shown that Elashvili's conjecture is true for `small' and `large' orbits. Some properties of the index for the normaliser of the centraliser are proved. In particular, we prove that, for a regular nilpotent elem…
When $G$ is a complex reductive algebraic group and $G/K$ is a reductive symmetric space, the decomposition of $\C[G/K]$ as a $K$-module was obtained (in a non-constructive way) by Richardson, generalizing the celebrated result of Kostant-Rallis for the linearized problem (the harmonic decomposition of the isotropy representation). To obtain a constructive version of Richardson's results, this paper studies the infinite dimensional Lie algebra $\X(G/K)^K$ of $K$-invariant regular algebraic vector fields using the geometry of $G/K$ and the $K$-spherical representations of $G$. Assume $G$ is sem…
We introduce the notion of a generalized spin representation of the maximal compact subalgebra of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra in order to show that, if defined over a formally real field, every such subalgebra has a non-trivial reductive finite-dimensional quotient. The appendix illustrates how to compute the isomorphism types of these quotients for the real $E_n$ series. In passing this provides an elementary way of determining the isomorphism types of the maximal compact subalgebras of the semisimple split real Lie algebras of types $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$.
The coadjoint representation of a connected algebraic group $Q$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak q$ is a thrilling and fascinating object. Symmetric invariants of $\mathfrak q$ (= $\mathfrak q$-invariants in the symmetric algebra $S(\mathfrak q)$) can be considered as a first approximation to the understanding of the coadjoint action $(Q:\mathfrak q^*)$ and coadjoint orbits. In this article, we study a class of non-reductive Lie algebras, where the description of the symmetric invariants is possible and the coadjoint representation has a number of nice invariant-theoretic properties. If $G$ is a se…
We show that for the reductive Tannaka groups of semisimple holonomic $\mathscr{D}$-modules on abelian varieties, every Weyl group orbit of weights of their universal cover is realized by a conic Lagrangian cycle on the cotangent bundle. Applications include a weak solution to the Schottky problem in genus five, an obstruction for the existence of summands of subvarieties on abelian varieties and a criterion for the simplicity of the arising Lie algebras.
The purpose of this article is to set foundations for decomposition numbers of perverse sheaves, to give some methods to calculate them in simple cases, and to compute them concretely in two situations: for a simple (Kleinian) surface singularity, and for the closure of the minimal non-trivial orbit in a simple Lie algebra. This work has applications to modular representation theory, for Weyl groups using the nilpotent cone of the corresponding semisimple Lie algebra, and for reductive algebraic group schemes using the affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group.
Each infinitesimally faithful representation of a reductive complex connected algebraic group $G$ induces a dominant morphism $Φ$ from the group to its Lie algebra $\g$ by orthogonal projection in the endomorphism ring of the representation space. The map $Φ$ identifies the field $Q(G)$ of rational functions on $G$ with an algebraic extension of the field $Q(\g)$ of rational functions on $\g$. For the spin representation of $\on{Spin}(V)$ the map $Φ$ essentially coincides with the classical Cayley transform. In general, properties of $Φ$ are established and these properties are applied to deal…
