Let $V$ be a Weyl module either for a reductive algebraic group $G$ or for the corresponding quantum group $U_q$. If $G$ is defined over a field of positive characteristic $p$, respectively if $q$ is a primitive $l$'th root of unity (in an arbitrary field) then $V$ has a Jantzen filtration. The sum of the positive terms in this filtration satisfies a well known sum formula. If $T$ denotes a tilting module either for $G$ or $U_q$ then we can similarly filter the space $\Hom_G(V,T)$, respectively $\Hom_{U_q}(V,T)$ and there is a sum formula for the positive terms here as well. We give an easy and unified proof of these two (equivalent) sum formulas. Our approach is based on an Euler type identity which we show holds without any restrictions on $p$ or $l$. In particular, we get rid of previous such restrictions in the tilting module case.
The rational representation theory of a reductive normal algebraic monoid (with one-dimensional center) forms a highest weight category, in the sense of Cline, Parshall, and Scott. This is a fundamental fact about the representation theory of reductive normal algebraic monoids. We survey how this result was obtained, and treat some natural examples coming from classical groups.
An algebraic group is called semi-reductive if it is a semi-direct product of a reductive subgroup and the unipotent radical. Such a semi-reductive algebraic group naturally arises and also plays a key role in the study of modular representations of non-classical finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in positive characteristic, and some other cases. Let $G$ ba a connected semi-reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. It turns out that $G$ has many same properties as reductive groups, such as the Bruhat decomposition. In this note, we…
We introduce the principal representation category $\mathscr{O}({\bf G})$ of reductive algebraic groups with Frobenius maps and put forward a conjecture that this category is a highest weight category. When $\Bbbk$ is complex field $\mathbb{C}$, we provide some evidences of this conjecture. We also study certain kind of bound quiver algebras whose representations are related to the principal representation category $\mathscr{O}({\bf G})$ .
Let $G$ be a non-connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ and let $D$ be a connected component of $G$. We investigate Jordan classes of $D$ and we obtain a description of the regular part of the closure of a Jordan class in terms of induction of $G^{\circ}$-orbits. We use this result to show that Lusztig strata in a non-connected reductive algebraic group are locally closed.
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field of positive characteristic and denote by C(G) the category of rational G-modules. In this note we investigate the subcategory of C(G) consisting of those modules whose composition factors all have highest weights linked to the Steinberg weight. This subcategory is denoted ST and called the Steinberg component. We give an explicit equivalence between ST and C(G) and we derive some consequences. In particular, our result allows us to relate the Frobenius contracting functor to the projection functor from C(G) onto ST .
We prove that a polar orthogonal representation of a real reductive algebraic group has the same closed orbits as the isotropy representation of a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space. We also develop a partial structural theory of polar orthogonal representations of real reductive algebraic groups which slightly generalizes some results of the structural theory of real reductive Lie algebras.
In this paper we construct certain irreducible infinite dimensional representations of algebraic groups with Frobenius maps. In particular, a few classical results of Steinberg and Deligne & Lusztig on complex representations of finite groups of Lie type are extended to reductive algebraic groups with Frobenius maps.
In this paper it is shown that the wave front set of a direct integral of singular, irreducible representations of a real, reductive algebraic group is contained in the singular set. Combining this result with the results of the first paper in this series, the author obtains asymptotic results on the occurrence of tempered representations in induction and restriction problems for real, reductive algebraic groups.
We prove that the nilpotent commuting variety of a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of good characteristic is equidimensional. In characteristic zero, this confirms a conjecture of Vladimir Baranovsky. As a by-product, we obtain tat the punctual (local) Hilbert scheme parametrising the ideals of colength $n$ in $k[[X,Y]]$ is irreducible over any algebraically closed field $k$.
This document contains tables with the classification of prehomogeneous modules for reductive algebraic groups with up to two simple factors due to Sato, Kimura and many others, as well as corresponding tables of the étale modules appearing in this list, determined by the author. It is intended as a convenient reference for examples of étale module for reductive algebraic group.
A complex vector space $V$ is an étale $G$-module if $G$ acts rationally on $V$ with a Zariski-open orbit and $\dim G=\dim V$. Such a module is called super-étale if the stabilizer of a point in the open orbit is trivial. Popov proved that reductive algebraic groups admitting super-étale modules are special algebraic groups. He further conjectured that a reductive group admitting a super-étale module is always isomorphic to a product of general linear groups. In light of previously available examples, one can conjecture more generally that in such a group all simple factors are either $SL_n$ f…
The simplicity of the induced modules for reductive Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is studied, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the simplicity is given.
Let ${\bf G}$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of $q$ elements, and ${\bf B}$ be a Borel subgroup of ${\bf G}$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $\Bbbk$ be a field and we assume that $\Bbbk=\bar{\mathbb{F}}_q $ when $\text{char}\ \Bbbk=\text{char} \ \mathbb{F}_q$. We show that the abstract induced module $\mathbb{M}(θ)=\Bbbk{\bf G}\otimes_{\Bbbk{\bf B}}θ$ (here $\Bbbk{\bf H}$ is the group algebra of ${\bf H}$ over the field $\Bbbk$ and $θ$ is a character of ${\bf B}$ over $\Bbbk$) has a composition series (of finite length) if $\text{char}\ \Bb…
This is a preliminary version of the first chapter of a book project on the character theory of finite groups of Lie type. It provides the foundations from the general theory of reductive algebraic groups over a finite field.
Let $G$ be an algebraic group. For $d\geq 1$, we define the commuting probabilities $cp_d(G) = \frac{dim(\mathfrak C_d(G))}{dim(G^d)}$, where $\mathfrak C_d(G)$ is the variety of commuting $d$-tuples in $G$. We prove that for a reductive group $G$ when $d$ is large, $cp_d(G)\sim \fracα{n}$ where $n=\dim(G)$, and $α$ is the maximal dimension of an Abelian subgroup of $G$. For a finite reductive group $G$ defined over the field $\mathbb F_q$, we show that $cp_{d+1}(G(\mathbb F_q))\sim q^{(α-n)d}$, and give several examples.
A semisimple algebraic tensor category over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero is the representation category of all finite dimensional twisted super representations of an affine reductive supergroup G over k. Such a supergroup is reductive if and only if its connected component is reductive. The connected component is reductive if and only if the Lie superalgebra divided by its center is a product of simple Lie algebras of classical type and Lie superalgebras spo(1,2r) of the orthosymplectic types BC_r.
This work was inspired by two natural questions. The first question is when Lie(G')=Lie(G)', where G is a connected algebraic supergroup defined over a field of characteristic zero. The second question is whether the unipotent radical of any normal supersubgroup H of G coincides with the intersection of H and G_u, where G_u is the unipotent radical of G. Both questions have affirmative answers in the category of algebraic groups (in the second case one has to assume additionally that G and H are reduced whenever char K >0). Surprisingly, using the technique of Harish-Chandra superpairs and a c…
We develop the representation theory for reductive linear differential algebraic groups (LDAGs). In particular, we exhibit an explicit sharp upper bound for orders of derivatives in differential representations of reductive LDAGs, extending existing results, which were obtained for SL(2) in the case of just one derivation. As an application of the above bound, we develop an algorithm that tests whether the parameterized differential Galois group of a system of linear differential equations is reductive and, if it is, calculates it.
We generalize results of P. Schneider and U. Stuhler for GL_l+1 to a reductive algebraic group G defined and split over a non-archimedean local field K. Following their lines, we prove that the generalized Steinberg representations of G with coefficients in any abelian group are cyclic. When G is semi-simple of adjoint type, we give an expression of these representations, whenever it is possible and in particular for those that are of maximal degree, in terms of the parahoric subgroups of G.
Let $D$ be a connected component of a possibly disconnected reductive group $G$ over an algebraic closed field. We define a partition of $D$ into finitely many Strata each of which is a union of $G^0$-conjugacy classes of fixed dimension. In the case where $D=G^0$ this recovers a known partition.
In this paper we prove equivalences of categories relating the derived category of a block of the category of representations of a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ bigger than the Coxeter number and a derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution (or a parabolic counterpart). In the case of the principal block, combined with previous results, this provides a modular version of celebrated constructions due to Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg for Lusztig's quantum groups at a root of unity. As an application…
We study a class of double coset spaces R_A \backslash G_1 \times G_2 /R_C, where G_1 and G_2 are connected reductive algebraic groups, and R_A and R_C are certain spherical subgroups of G_1 \times G_2 obtained by ``identifying'' Levi factors of parabolic subgroups in G_1 and G_2. Such double cosets naturally appear in the symplectic leaf decompositions of Poisson homogeneous spaces of complex reductive groups with the Belavin-Drinfeld Poisson structures. They also appear in orbit decompositions of the De Concini-Procesi compactifications of semi-simple groups of adjoint type. We find explicit…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$, and $\ggg=\Lie(G)$. In this paper, we study modular representations of the reductive Lie algebra $\ggg$ with $p$-character $χ$ of standard Levi-form associated with an index subset $I$ of simple roots. With aid of support variety theory we prove a theorem that a $U_χ(\ggg)$-module is projective if and only if it is a strong "tilting" module, i.e. admitting both $\cz_Q$- and $\cz^{w^I}_Q$-filtrations (to see Theorem \ref{THMFORINV}). Then by analogy of the arguments in \cite{…
By a generalized Tannaka-Krein reconstruction we associate to the admissible representations of the category O of a Kac-Moody algebra, and its category of admissible duals a monoid with a coordinate ring. The Kac-Moody group is the Zariski open dense unit group of this monoid. The restriction of the coordinate ring to the Kac-Moody group is the algebra of strongly regular functions introduced by Kac and Peterson. This monoid has similar structural properties as a reductive algebraic monoid. In particular it is unit regular, its idempotents related to the faces of the Tits cone. It has Bruhat a…
We study three fundamental topics in the representation theory of disconnected algebraic groups whose identity component is reductive: (i) the classification of irreducible representations; (ii) the existence and properties of Weyl and dual Weyl modules; and (iii) the decomposition map relating representations in characteristic $0$ and those in characteristic $p$ (for groups defined over discrete valuation rings). For each of these topics, we obtain natural generalizations of the well-known results for connected reductive groups.
In this paper we study the complex representations of reductive groups over local non-Archimedean fields. We use the building of the reductive group to give upper-bounds for the absolute value of the character of an admissible representation and for the Weyl integration formula for certain regular elements. The upper-bound for the character of a representation is based on the alternative description, depending on the building, of the character as given by R. Meyer and M. Solleveld [MS12]. Once the character and the Weyl integration formula are related to the building, the upper-bounds will fol…
Let $G$ be a simple simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. We discuss various properties of nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, which have previously only been considered over $\mathbb{C}$. Using a combination of theoretical and computational methods, we extend to positive characteristic various calculations of de Graaf with nilpotent orbits in exceptional Lie algebras. In particular, we classify those orbits which are reachable, those which satisfy a certain related condition due to Panyushev, and deter…
We show that any two homomorphisms of the alternating group A_5 into E_8 (over the complex numbers) whose images has finite centralizers are conjugate under E_8. This, in conjunction with earlier work of Frey, completes the classification up to G-conjugacy of homomorphisms of A_5 into a simple adjoint algebraic group over the complex numbers.
Let $G$ be a reductive group in the Harish-Chandra class e.g. a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center, or the group of real points of a connected reductive algebraic group defined over $\R$. Let $σ$ be an involution of the Lie group $G$, $H$ an open subgroup of the subgroup of fixed points of $σ$. One decomposes the elements of $L^2(G/H)$ with the help of joint eigenfunctions under the algebra of left invariant differential operators under $G$ on $G/H$.
We introduce the notion of Demazure descent data on a triangulated category C and define the descent category for such data. We illustrate the definition by our basic example. Let G be a reductive algebraic group with a Borel subgroup B. Demazure functors form Demazure descent data on the derived category of Rep(B) and the descent category is equivalent to the derived category of Rep(G).
Vogan and Barbasch-Vogan attach two similar invariants to representations of a reductive Lie group, one by an algebraic process, the other analytic. They conjectured that the two invariants determine each other in a definite manner. Here we prove the conjecture. Our arguments involve two finer invariants -- the characteristic cycles of representations -- which are interesting in their own right.
Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field. We define a decomposition of G into finitely many strata such that each stratum is a union of conjugacy classes of fixed dimension; the strata are indexed by a set defined in terms of the Weyl group which is independent of the characteristic. In the case where $G$ is replaced by the corresponding loop group we define an analogous decomposition of the set of regular semisimple compact elements into countably many strata.
Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraic closure of a finite field Fq. In this paper it is proved that the infinite dimensional Steinberg module of kG defined by N. Xi in 2014 is irreducible when k is a field of positive characteristic and char k is not char Fq. For certain special linear groups, we show that the Steinberg modules of the groups are not quasi-finite with respect to some natural quasi-finite sequences of the groups.
In a recent manuscript, D.Vogan conjectures that four canonical globalizations of Harish-Chandra modules commute with certain n-cohomology groups. In this article we focus on the case of a complex reductive group and prove that Vogan's conjecture holds for one of the globalizations if and only if it holds for the dual. We thus prove Vogan's conjecture for the maximal globalization if the reductive Lie group is complex and connected.
Let $G$ be a real, reductive algebraic group, and let $X$ be a homogeneous space for $G$ with a non-zero invariant density. We give an explicit description of a Zariski open, dense subset of the asymptotics of the tempered support of $L^2(X)$. Under additional hypotheses, this result remains true for vector bundle valued harmonic analysis on $X$. These results follow from an upper bound on the wave front set of an induced Lie group representation under a uniformity condition.
Linear differential algebraic groups (LDAGs) appear as Galois groups of systems of linear differential and difference equations with parameters. These groups measure differential-algebraic dependencies among solutions of the equations. LDAGs are now also used in factoring partial differential operators. In this paper, we study Zariski closures of LDAGs. In particular, we give a Tannakian characterization of algebraic groups that are Zariski closures of a given LDAG. Moreover, we show that the Zariski closures that correspond to representations of minimal dimension of a reductive LDAG are all i…
Let $G$ be the linear algebraic group $SL_3$ over a field $k$ of characteristic two. Let $A$ be a finitely generated commutative $k$-algebra on which $G$ acts rationally by $k$-algebra automorphisms. We show that the full cohomology ring $H^*(G,A)$ is finitely generated. This extends the finite generation property of the ring of invariants $A^G$. We discuss where the problem stands for other geometrically reductive group schemes.
A complex vector space $V$ is a prehomogeneous $G$-module if $G$ acts rationally on $V$ with a Zariski-open orbit. The module is called etale if $\dim V=\dim G$. We study etale modules for reductive algebraic groups $G$ with one-dimensional center. For such $G$, even though every etale module is a regular prehomogeneous module, its irreducible submodules have to be non-regular. For these non-regular prehomogeneous modules, we determine some strong constraints on the ranks of their simple factors. This allows us to show that there do not exist etale modules for $G=\mathrm{GL}_1\times S\times\cd…
Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Assume that p is good for G. In this note we consider particular classes of connected reductive subgroups H of G and show that the cocharacters of H that are associated to a given nilpotent element e in the Lie algebra of H are precisely the cocharacters of G associated to e that take values in H. In particular, we show that this is the case provided H is a connected reductive subgroup of G of maximal rank; this answers a question posed by J.C. Jantzen.
We investigate positive-dimensional closed reductive subgroups of almost simple algebraic groups containing a regular unipotent element. Our main result states that such subgroups do not lie inside proper parabolic subgroups unless possibly when their connected component is a torus. This extends the earlier result of Testerman and Zalesski treating connected reductive subgroups.
Let $G$ be a connected, reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$ and $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. In this paper, we study representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ with a $p$-character $χ$ of standard Levi form. When $\mathfrak{g}$ is of type $A_n, B_n, C_n$ or $D_n$, a sufficient condition for the irreducibility of standard parabolic baby Verma $\mathfrak{g}$-modules is obtained. This partially answers a question raised by Friedlander and Parshall in [Friedlander E. M. and Parshall B. J., Deformations of Lie algebra representations, Amer. J. Math. 112 (19…
We prove a general existence result for infinite-dimensional admissible (g;k)-modules, where g is a reductive finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra and k is a reductive in g algebraic subalgebra.
Let G be a connected real reductive Lie group acting linearly on a finite dimensional vector space V over R. This action admits a Kempf-Ness function and so we have an associated gradient map. If G is Abelian we explicitly compute the image of G orbits under the gradient map, generalizing a result proved by Kac and Peterson. A similar result is proved for the gradient map associated to the natural $G$ action on P(V). We also investigate the convex hull of the image of the gradient map restricted on the closure of G orbits. Finally, we give a new proof of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for real …
This is the second paper of a series of papers on a version of categories $\mathcal{O}$ for root-reductive Lie algebras. Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a root-reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $0$ with a splitting Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak{b}$ containing a splitting maximal toral subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}$. For some pairs of blocks $\overline{\mathcal{O}}[λ]$ and $\overline{\mathcal{O}}[μ]$, the subcategories whose objects have finite length are equivalence via functors obtained by the direct limits of translation functors. Tilting objects can also…
We generalize a construction of Freudenburg and Moser-Jauslin in order to obtain an example of a non-linearizable action of a commutative reductive algebraic group on the affine space for every field of characteristic zero which admits a quadratic field extension.
Let a complex algebraic reductive group $\bf G$ act on a complex algebraic manifold $\bf X$. For a $\bf G$-invariant subvariety $Ξ$ of the nilpotent cone $\mathcal{N}(\mathfrak{g}^*)\subset \mathfrak{g}^*$ we define a notion of $Ξ$-symplectic complexity of $\bf X$. This notion generalizes the notion of complexity defined in [Vin86]. We prove several properties of this notion, and relate it to the notion of $Ξ$-complexity defined in [AG] motivated by its relation with representation theory.
