Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$, and $\ggg=\Lie(G)$. In this paper, we study modular representations of the reductive Lie algebra $\ggg$ with $p$-character $χ$ of standard Levi-form associated with an index subset $I$ of simple roots. With aid of support variety theory we prove a theorem that a $U_χ(\ggg)$-module is projective if and only if it is a strong "tilting" module, i.e. admitting both $\cz_Q$- and $\cz^{w^I}_Q$-filtrations (to see Theorem \ref{THMFORINV}). Then by analogy of the arguments in \cite{AK} for $G_1T$-modules, we construct so-called Andersen-Kaneda filtrations associated with each projective $\ggg$-module of $p$-character $χ$, and finally obtain sum formulas from those filtrations.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$. Under mild restrictions on the characteristic of $\Bbbk$, we show that any $G$-module with a good filtration also has a good filtration as a module for the reductive part of the centralizer of a nilpotent element $x$ in its Lie algebra.
We study the K-stability of a polarised variety with non-reductive automorphism group. We associate a canonical filtration of the co-ordinate ring to each variety of this kind, which destabilises the variety in several examples which we compute. We conjecture this holds in general. This is an algebro-geometric analogue of Matsushima's theorem regarding the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics. As an application, we give an example of an orbifold del Pezzo surface without a Kähler-Einstein metric.
Let G be a connected and reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. An interesting class of representations of G consists of those G-modules having a good filtration -- i.e. a filtration whose layers are the standard highest weight modules obtained as the space of global sections of G-linearized line bundles on the flag variety of G. Let H be a connected and reductive subgroup of G. One says that (G,H) is a Donkin pair, or that H is a good filtration subgroup of G, if every G-module with good filtration also has a good filtration as an H-module. In th…
Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group over a field k of characteristic p>0. Let p be large enough with respect to the root system. We show that if a finitely generated commutative k-algebra A with G-action has good filtration, then any noetherian A-module with compatible G-action has finite good filtration dimension.
In this paper, we introduce super Weyl groups, their distinguished elements and properties for basic classical Lie superalgebras. Then we formulate Jantzen filtration for baby Verma modules in graded restricted module categories of basic classical Lie superalgebras over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic, and prove a sum formula in the corresponding Grothendieck groups. We finally obtain a strong linkage principle in such categories.
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field k. When k=C, R.K.Brylinski constructed a filtration of weight spaces of a G module, using the action of a principal nilpotent element of the Lie algebra, and proved that this filtration corresponds to Lusztig's q-analogue of the weight multiplicity. Later, Ginzburg discovered that this filtration has an interesting geometric interpretation via the geometric Satake correspondence. The goal of this article is to generalize these results to positive characteristics.
Let $V$ be a Weyl module either for a reductive algebraic group $G$ or for the corresponding quantum group $U_q$. If $G$ is defined over a field of positive characteristic $p$, respectively if $q$ is a primitive $l$'th root of unity (in an arbitrary field) then $V$ has a Jantzen filtration. The sum of the positive terms in this filtration satisfies a well known sum formula. If $T$ denotes a tilting module either for $G$ or $U_q$ then we can similarly filter the space $\Hom_G(V,T)$, respectively $\Hom_{U_q}(V,T)$ and there is a sum formula for the positive terms here as well. We give an easy an…
Let $\mathcal{O}_2$ and $\mathcal{O}'_2$ be two distinct finite local rings of length two with residue field of characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}_2)$ and $\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}'_2)$, be the group of points of any reductive group scheme $\mathbb{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ such that $p$ is very good for $\mathbb{G} \times \mathbb{F}_q$. We prove that there exists an isomorphism of group algebra $K[\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}_2)] \cong K[\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}'_2)]$, where $K$ is a sufficiently large field of characteristic different from $p$.
In continuation of work begun in \cite{FR}, we study in this article those Auslander--Reiten components of the algebras $\Dist(G_r)$ that contain simple modules or baby Verma modules, where $\Dist(G_r)$ is the algebra of distributions of the $r$-th Frobenius kernel of the smooth reductive group $G$, defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic.
Let k be a finite extension of Q_p, let G be an absolutely simple split reductive group over k, and let K be a maximal unramified extension of k. To each point in the Bruhat-Tits building of G_K, Moy and Prasad have attached a filtration of G(K) by bounded subgroups. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the dual of the first Moy-Prasad filtration quotient to contain stable vectors for the action of the reductive quotient. Our work extends earlier results by Reeder and Yu, who gave a classification in the case when p is sufficiently large. By passing to a finite unramif…
We show that the Hodge filtration of a tempered Hodge module is generated by the lowest piece of its Hodge filtration. As a consequence, we prove the main conjecture of [SV] in the special case of tempered representations of real reductive Lie groups.
Let K be a maximal unramified extension of a nonarchimedean local field with arbitrary residual characteristic p. Let G be a reductive group over K which splits over a tamely ramified extension of K. We show that the associated Moy-Prasad filtration representations are in a certain sense independent of p. We also establish descriptions of these representations in terms of explicit Weyl modules and as representations occurring in a generalized Vinberg-Levy theory. As an application, we use these results to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of stable vectors in Moy-Pr…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, $G$ a reductive group over $k$, and $V$ a finite dimensional $G$-module. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$, and $U$ its unipotent radical. We prove that if $S=\Sym V$ has a good filtration, then $S^U$ is $F$-pure.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, $G$ a reductive group over $k$, and $V$ a finite dimensional $G$-module. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $U_P$ its unipotent radical. We prove that if $S$=\textyen $Sym V$ has a good filtration, then the ring of invariants $S^{U_P}$ is strongly $F$-regular.
We relate the category of sheaves on alcoves that was constructed in "Sheaves on the alcoves and modular representations I" to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups. In particular, we show that its indecomposable projective objects encode the simple rational characters of a reductive algebraic group in all characteristics above the Coxeter number.
According to Kazhdan-Lusztig and Ginzburg, the Hecke algebra of an affine Weyl group is identified with the equivariant $K$-group of Steinberg's triple variety. The $K$-group is equipped with a filtration indexed by closed $G$-stable subvarieties of the nilpotent variety, where $G$ is the corresponding reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we will show in the case of type $A$ that the filtration is compatible with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the Hecke algebra.
We study the endomorphism algebras of a modular Gelfand-Graev representation of a finite reductive group by investigating modular properties of homomorphisms constructed by Curtis and Curtis-Shoji.
By the geometric Satake isomorphism of Mirkovic and Vilonen, decomposition numbers for reductive groups can be interpreted as decomposition numbers for equivariant perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group. Using a description of the minimal degenerations of the affine Grassmannian obtained by Malkin, Ostrik and Vybornov, we are able to recover geometrically some decomposition numbers for reductive groups. In the other direction, we can use some decomposition numbers for reductive groups to prove geometric results, such as a new proof of non-smoothness res…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, $Δ(λ)$ denote the Weyl module of $G$ of highest weight $λ$ and $ι_{λ,μ}:Δ(λ+μ)\to Δ(λ)\otimesΔ(μ)$ be the canonical $G$-morphism. We study the split condition for $ι_{λ,μ}$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, and apply this as an approach to compare the Jantzen filtrations of the Weyl modules $Δ(λ)$ and $Δ(λ+μ)$. In the case when $G$ is of type $A$, we show that the split condition is closely related to the product of certain Young symmetrizers and, under some mild conditions, is further character…
Let $\frak g$ be a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper, we study the representations of $\frak g$ with a $p$-character $χ$ of standard Levi form associated with a given subset $I$ of the simple root system $Π$ of $\frak g$. Let $U_χ({\frak g})$ be the reduced enveloping algebra of $\frak g$. A notion "quasi-simple module" (denoted by $\mathcal L_χ(λ)$) is introduced. The properties of such a module turn out to be better than those of the corresponding simple module $\widehat L_χ(λ)$. It enables us to investigate the $U_χ({\frak g})$-m…
Let G be GL_N or SL_N as reductive linear algebraic group over a field k of positive characteristic p. We prove several results that were previously established only when N < 6 or p > 2^N. Let G act rationally on a finitely generated commutative k-algebra A. Assume that A as a G-module has a good filtration or a Schur filtration. Let M be a noetherian A-module with compatible G action. Then M has finite good/Schur filtration dimension, so that there are at most finitely many nonzero H^i(G,M). Moreover these H^i(G,M) are noetherian modules over the ring of invariants A^G. Our main tool is a res…
Let $G$ be connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$ and suppose that $p$ is a good prime for the root system of $G$, the derived subgroup of $G$ is simply connected and the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g} = \operatorname{Lie}(G)$ admits a non-degenerate Ad$(G)$-invariant symmetric bilinear form. Given a linear function $χ$ on $\mathfrak{g}$ we denote by $U_χ(\mathfrak{g})$ the reduced enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{g}$ associated with $χ$. By the Kac-Weisfeiler conjecture (now a theorem), any irreducible $U_χ(\mathfrak{g})$-module has…
For a reductive group G defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, we show that the Frobenius contraction functor of G-modules is right adjoint to the Frobenius twist of the modules tensored with the Steinberg module twice. It follows that the Frobenius contraction functor preserves injectivity, good filtrations, but not semisiplicity.
An algebraic group is called semi-reductive if it is a semi-direct product of a reductive subgroup and the unipotent radical. Such a semi-reductive algebraic group naturally arises and also plays a key role in the study of modular representations of non-classical finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in positive characteristic, and some other cases. Let $G$ ba a connected semi-reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. It turns out that $G$ has many same properties as reductive groups, such as the Bruhat decomposition. In this note, we…
We study the conditions for a nilpotent Lie group to be foliated into subgroups that have square integrable (relative discrete series) unitary representations, that fit together to form a filtration by normal subgroups. Then we use that filtration to construct a class of "stepwise square integrable" representations on which Plancherel measure is concentrated. Further, we work out the character formulae for those stepwise square integrable representations, and we give an explicit Plancherel formula. Next, we use some structure theory to check that all these constructions and results apply to ni…
We prove analogues of fundamental results of Kostant on the universal centralizer of a connected reductive algebraic group for algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic (with mild assumptions), and for integral coefficients. As an application, we use these results to obtain a "mixed modular" analogue of the derived Satake equivalence of Bezrukavnikov-Finkelberg.
In this paper we first construct natural filtrations on the full theta lifts for any real reductive dual pairs. We will use these filtrations to calculate the associated cycles and therefore the associated varieties of Harish-Chandra modules of the indefinite orthogonal groups which are theta lifts of unitary lowest weight modules of the metaplectic double covers of the real symplectic groups. We will show that some of these representations are special unipotent and satisfy a K-type formula in a conjecture of Vogan.
We introduce and study new categories T(g,k)of integrable sl(\infty)-modules which depend on the choice of a certain reductive subalgebra k in g=sl(\infty). The simple objects of these categories are tensor modules as in the previously studied category, however, the choice of k provides more flexibility of nonsimple modules. We then choose k to have two infinite-dimensional diagonal blocks, and show that a certain injective object K(m|n) in T(g,k) realizes a categorical sl(\infty)-action on the integral category O(m|n) of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n). We show that the socle of K(m|n) is genera…
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k of very good characteristic. The Lusztig-Vogan bijection is a bijection between the set of dominant weights for G and the set of irreducible G-equivariant vector bundles on nilpotent orbits, conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan independently, and constructed in full generality by Bezrukavnikov. In characteristic 0, this bijection is related to the theory of 2-sided cells in the affine Weyl group, and plays a key role in the proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for quantum groups at a root of unity.…
In this paper we investigate the growth with respect to $p$ of dimensions of irreducible representations of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$. More precisely, it is known that for $p\gg 0$, the irreducibles with a regular rational central character $λ$ and $p$-character $χ$ are indexed by a certain canonical basis in the $K_0$ of the Springer fiber of $χ$. This basis is independent of $p$. For a basis element, the dimension of the corresponding module is a polynomial in $p$. We show that the canonical basis is compatible with the two-sided cell filtration f…
We provide a complete description of the asymptotics of the gradient flow on the space of metrics on any semistable quiver representation. This involves a recursive construction of approximate solutions and the appearance of iterated logarithms and a limiting filtration of the representation. The filtration turns out to have an algebraic definition which makes sense in any finite length modular lattice. This is part of a larger project by the authors to study iterated logarithms in the asymptotics of gradient flows, both in finite and infinite dimensional settings.
Motivated by questions in modular representation theory, Carlson, Friedlander, and the first author introduced the varieties E(r, g) of r-dimensional abelian p-nilpotent subalgebras of a p-restricted Lie algebra g. In this paper, we identify the varieties E(r, g) for a reductive restricted Lie algebra g and r the maximal dimension of an abelian p-nilpotent subalgebra of g.
These notes provide a concise introduction to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups in positive characteristic, with an emphasis on Lusztig's character formula and geometric representation theory. They are based on the first author's notes from a lecture series delivered by the second author at the Simons Centre for Geometry and Physics in August 2019. We intend them to complement more detailed treatments.
We prove a long-standing conjecture of Geck which predicts that cuspidal unipotent characters remain irreducible after $\ell$-reduction. To this end, we construct a progenerator for the category of representations of a finite reductive group coming from generalised Gelfand--Graev representations. This is achieved by showing that cuspidal representations appear in the head of generalised Gelfand--Graev representations attached to cuspidal unipotent classes, as defined and studied in \cite{GM96}.
The modular representation theory of finite groups has its origins in the work of Richard Brauer. In this survey article we first discuss the work being done on some outstanding conjectures in the theory. We then describe work done in the eighties and nineties on modular representations in non-defining characteristic of finite reductive groups. In the second part of the paper we discuss some recent developments in the theory for symmetric groups and Hecke algebras, where remarkable connections with Lie theory and graded representation theory have been made.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group scheme defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$ and let $G_1$ denote the Frobenius kernel of $G$. To each finite-dimensional $G$-module $M$, one can define the support variety $V_{G_1}(M)$, which can be regarded as a $G$-stable closed subvariety of the nilpotent cone. A $G$-module is called a tilting module if it has both good and Weyl filtrations. In 1997, it was conjectured by J.E. Humphreys that when $p\geq h$, the support varieties of the indecomposable tilting modules coincide with the nilpotent orbits given by the Lusztig bijection. In this paper, we shall verif…
Suppose that $G$ is a simple adjoint reductive group over $\mathbf{Q}$, with an exceptional Dynkin type, and with $G(\mathbf{R})$ quaternionic (in the sense of Gross-Wallach). Then there is a notion of modular forms for $G$, anchored on the so-called quaternionic discrete series representations of $G(\mathbf{R})$. The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit form of the Fourier expansion of modular forms on $G$, along the unipotent radical $N$ of the Heisenberg parabolic $P = MN$ of $G$.
Let F be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic p, let G be an inner form of GL(n,F) with n>0, and let l be a prime number different from p. We describe the block decomposition of the category of finite length smooth representations of G with coefficients in an algebraically closed field of characteristic l. Unlike the case of complex representations of an arbitrary p-adic reductive group and that of l-modular representations of GL(n,F), several non-isomorphic supercuspidal supports may correspond to the same block. We describe the (finitely many) supercuspidal suppo…
The elementary divisors of the Gram matrices of Specht modules S^lambda over the symmetric group are determined for two-row partitions and for two-column partitions lambda. More precisely, the subquotients of the Jantzen filtration are calculated using Schaper's formula. Moreover, considering a general partition lambda of n at a prime p > n - lambda_1, the only possible non trivial composition factor of S_p^lambda is induced by the morphism of Carter and Payne, as shown by means of Kleshchev's modular branching rule. This enables the Jantzen filtration to be calculated in this case as well.
In this paper we prove a general theorem about congruences between automorphic forms on a reductive group G which is compact at infinity modulo the center. If the rank is one, this essentially reduces to Ribet's level-raising theorem. We then specialize to the higher rank case where G is an inner form of GSp(4). Here we get congruences with automorphic forms having a generic local component. In particular, a Saito-Kurokawa form is congruent to a form which is not of Saito-Kurokawa type. We get similar results for U(3) at split primes.
This paper is an introduction to the use of perverse sheaves with positive characteristic coefficients in modular representation theory. In the first part, we survey results relating singularities in finite and affine Schubert varieties and nilpotent cones to modular representations of reductive groups and their Weyl groups. The second part is a brief introduction to the theory of perverse sheaves with an emphasis on the case of positive characteristic and integral coefficients. In the final part, we provide some explicit examples of stalks of intersection cohomology complexes with integral or…
For a reductive group G, we study the Drinfeld-Gaitsgory functor of the category of conjugation-equivariant D-modules on G. We show that this functor is an equivalence of categories, and that it has a filtration with layers expressed via parabolic induction of parabolic restriction. We use this to provide a conceptual definition of the Deligne-Lusztig involution on the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible character D-modules, which was defined previously in [Lu1, section 15].
We establish a character formula for indecomposable tilting modules for connected reductive groups in characteristic p in terms of p-Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, for p>h the Coxeter number. Using results of Andersen, one may deduce a character formula for simple modules if p>2h-3. Our results are a consequence of an extension to modular coefficients of a monoidal Koszul duality equivalence established by Bezrukavnikov and Yun.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$ and let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over $k$. Under some standard hypothesis on $G$, we give a direct approach to the finite $W$-algebra $U(\mathfrak g,e)$ associated to a nilpotent element $e \in \mathfrak g = \operatorname{Lie} G$. We prove a PBW theorem and deduce a number of consequences, then move on to define and study the $p$-centre of $U(\mathfrak g,e)$, which allows us to define reduced finite $W$-algebras $U_η(\mathfrak g,e)$ and we verify that they coincide with those previously appearing in the work…
