We study the conditions for a nilpotent Lie group to be foliated into subgroups that have square integrable (relative discrete series) unitary representations, that fit together to form a filtration by normal subgroups. Then we use that filtration to construct a class of "stepwise square integrable" representations on which Plancherel measure is concentrated. Further, we work out the character formulae for those stepwise square integrable representations, and we give an explicit Plancherel formula. Next, we use some structure theory to check that all these constructions and results apply to nilradicals of minimal parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups. Finally, we develop multiplicity formulae for compact quotients $N/Γ$ where $Γ$ respects the filtration.
In a recent paper we found conditions for a nilpotent Lie group $N$ to have a filtration by normal subgroups whose successive quotients have square integrable representations, and such that these square integrable representations fit together nicely to give an explicit construction of Plancherel almost all representations of $N$. That resulted in explicit character formulae, Plancherel formulae and multiplicity formulae. We also showed that nilradicals $N$ of minimal parabolic subgroups $P = MAN$ enjoy that "stepwise square integrable" property. Here we extend those results to direct limits of…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$. Under mild restrictions on the characteristic of $\Bbbk$, we show that any $G$-module with a good filtration also has a good filtration as a module for the reductive part of the centralizer of a nilpotent element $x$ in its Lie algebra.
In a recent paper we found conditions for a nilpotent Lie group to be foliated into subgroups that have square integrable unitary representations that fit together to form a filtration by normal subgroups. That resulted in explicit character formulae, Plancherel formulae and multiplicity formulae. We also showed that nilradicals $N$ of minimal parabolic subgroups $P = MAN$ enjoy that "stepwise square integrable" property. Here we extend those results from $N$ to $P$. The Pfaffian polynomials, which give orthogonality relations and Plancherel density for $N$, also give a semiinvariant different…
The aim of my PhD work is to study the $L^p$-boundedness of operators on two classes of two-step nilpotent Lie groups, using Plancherel formulas and spherical functions as tools. The first class of groups consists of the groups of Heisenberg type, and the second, of the two-step free nilpotent Lie groups (denoted $N_{v,2}$ for $v$ generators). In the latter case, we develop a radial Fourier calculus. Our study has focused on the maximal functions associated with Korányi spheres, together with their square functions, and the convolution operator defined with the radial Fourier calculus on the t…
In this paper, we give the expressions for the bounded spherical functions, or equivalently the spherical functions of positive type, for the free two-step nilpotent Lie groups endowed with the actions of orthogonal groups or their special subgroups. Next we deduce some results about the (Kohn) sub-Laplacian, and we compute the radial Plancherel measure.
We continue the study of glider representations of finite groups $G$ with given structure chain of subgroups $e \subset G_1 \subset \ldots \subset G_d = G$. We give a characterization of irreducible gliders of essential length $e \leq d$ which in the case of $p$-groups allows to prove some results about classical representation theory. The paper also contains an introduction to generalized character theory for glider representations and an extension of the decomposition groups in the Clifford theory. Furthermore, we study irreducible glider representations for finite nilpotent groups.
Braverman and Finkelberg have recently proposed a conjectural analogue of the geometric Satake isomorphism for untwisted affine Kac-Moody groups. As part of their model, they conjecture that (at dominant weights) Lusztig's q-analog of weight multiplicity is equal to the Poincare series of the principal nilpotent filtration of the weight space, as occurs in the finite-dimensional case. We show that the conjectured equality holds for all affine Kac-Moody algebras if the principal nilpotent filtration is replaced by the principal Heisenberg filtration. The main body of the proof is a Lie algebra …
Nilpotent Lie groups with stepwise square integrable representations were recently investigated by J.A.~Wolf. We give an alternative approach to these representations by relating them to the stratifications of the duals of nilpotent Lie algebras, thus proving that they correspond to a subset with relative Hausdorff topology, dense interior, and total Plancherel measure in the unitary dual of the Lie group under consideration.
There are some new developments on Plancherel formula and growth of matrix coefficients for unitary representations of nilpotent Lie groups. These have several consequences for the geometry of weakly symmetric spaces and analysis on parabolic subgroups of real semisimple Lie groups, and to (infinite dimensional) locally nilpotent Lie groups. Many of these consequences are still under development. In this note I'll survey a few of these new aspects of representation theory for nilpotent Lie groups and parabolic subgroups.
Let $F(n)$ be a connected and simply connected free 2-step nilpotent lie group and $K$ be a compact subgroup of Aut($F(n)$). We say that $(K,F(n))$ is a Gelfand pair when the set of integrable $K$-invariant functions on $F(n)$ forms an abelian algebra under convolution. In this paper, we consider the case when $K=O(n)$. In this case, the Gelfand space $(O(n),F(n)$ is equipped with the Godement-Plancherel measure, and the spherical transform $\land:L_{O(n)}^{2}(F(n))\rightarrow L^{2}(Δ(O(n),F(n)))$ is an isometry. I will prove the Gelfand space $Δ(O(n),F(n))$ is equipped with the Godement-Planc…
We use the G-invariant non-degenerate form on the Steinberg module to Frobenius split the cotangent bundle of a flag variety in good prime characteristics. This was previously only known for the general linear group. Applications are a vanishing theorem for pull back of line bundles to the cotangent bundle (proved for the classical groups and G_2 by Andersen and Jantzen and in characteristic zero by B. Broer (for all groups)), normality and rational singularities for the subregular nilpotent variety and good filtrations of the global sections of pull backs of line bundles to the cotangent bund…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field k. When k=C, R.K.Brylinski constructed a filtration of weight spaces of a G module, using the action of a principal nilpotent element of the Lie algebra, and proved that this filtration corresponds to Lusztig's q-analogue of the weight multiplicity. Later, Ginzburg discovered that this filtration has an interesting geometric interpretation via the geometric Satake correspondence. The goal of this article is to generalize these results to positive characteristics.
According to Kazhdan-Lusztig and Ginzburg, the Hecke algebra of an affine Weyl group is identified with the equivariant $K$-group of Steinberg's triple variety. The $K$-group is equipped with a filtration indexed by closed $G$-stable subvarieties of the nilpotent variety, where $G$ is the corresponding reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we will show in the case of type $A$ that the filtration is compatible with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the Hecke algebra.
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classi…
In this paper we present a lower bound for the minimal dimension $μ(\mathfrak{n})$ of a faithful representation of a finite dimensional $p$-step nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ over a field of characteristic zero. Our bound is given as the minimum of a quadratically constrained linear optimization problem, it works for arbitrary $p$ and takes into account a given filtration of $\mathfrak{n}$. We present some estimates of this minimum which leads to a very explicit lower bound for $μ(\mathfrak{n})$ that involves the dimensions of $\mathfrak{n}$ and its center. This bound allows us to obtai…

An affine Hecke algebras can be realized as an equivariant K-group of the corresponding Steinberg variety. This gives rise naturally to some two-sided ideals of the affine Hecke algebra by means of the closures of nilpotent orbits of the corresponding Lie algebra. In this paper we will show that the two-sided ideals are in fact the two-sided ideals of the affine Hecke algebra defined through two-sided cells of the corresponding affine Weyl group after the two-sided ideals are tensored by rational numbers field. This proves a weak form of a conjecture of Ginzburg proposed in 1987.
In this paper, we study the Plancherel measure of a class of non-connected nilpotent groups which is of special interest in Gabor theory. Let $G$ be a time-frequency group. More precisely, that is $G=\left\langle T_{k},M_{l}:k\in\mathbb{Z}^{d},l\in B\mathbb{Z}^{d}\right\rangle ,$ $T_{k}$, $M_{l}$ are translations and modulations operators acting in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d}),$ and $B$ is a non-singular matrix. We compute the Plancherel measure of the left regular representation of $G\ $which is denoted by $L.$ The action of $G$ on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ induces a representation which we call a Ga…
The aim of this paper is to study the canonical filtration $L(λ)_l$ of an irreducible finite dimensional $\operatorname{SL}(V)$-module $L(λ)$ using the universal enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{sl}(V))$ and the annihilator ideal $ann(v)$ of a highest weight vector $v$ in $L(λ)$. We give a basis for $L(λ)_l$ and calculate the dimension of $L(λ)_l$ as a function of $l$. This is done in terms of the universal enveloping algebra of the nilpotent radical of an opposite parabolic sub algebra of the stabilizer Lie algebra of a flag $V_*$ in $V$ with respect to a choice of roots for $\mathfrak{sl}(V)$…
In a series of recent papers we extended the notion of square integrability, for representations of nilpotent Lie groups, to that of stepwise square integrability. There we discussed a number of applications based on the fact that nilradicals of minimal parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups are stepwise square integrable. Here, in Part I, we prove stepwise square integrability for nilradicals of arbitrary parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups. This is technically more delicate than the case of minimal parabolics. We further discuss applications to Plancherel formulae and …
