Let $G$ be the linear algebraic group $SL_3$ over a field $k$ of characteristic two. Let $A$ be a finitely generated commutative $k$-algebra on which $G$ acts rationally by $k$-algebra automorphisms. We show that the full cohomology ring $H^*(G,A)$ is finitely generated. This extends the finite generation property of the ring of invariants $A^G$. We discuss where the problem stands for other geometrically reductive group schemes.
We calculate the rational cohomology of the commuting variety $X_{G, n}$ consisting of $n$-tuples of commuting elements of a compact reductive group $G$. This is done by studying a map from a related variety $Y_{G, n}$, which has easily calculated cohomology. The proof studies the fibers of the map and uses the Vietoris-Begle theorem to prove that the induced map on rational cohomology is an isomorphism.
Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over a field k. Let A be a finitely generated commutative k-algebra on which G acts rationally by k-algebra automorphisms. Invariant theory tells that the ring of invariants A^G=H^0(G,A) is finitely generated. We show that in fact the full cohomology ring H^*(G,A) is finitely generated. The proof is based on the strict polynomial bifunctor cohomology classes constructed by the junior author. We also continue the study of bifunctor cohomology of the divided powers of a Frobenius twist of the adjoint representation.
By a quasi-connected reductive group (a term of Labesse) over an arbitrary field we mean an almost direct product of a connected semisimple group and a quasi-torus (a smooth group of multiplicative type). We show that a linear algebraic group is quasi-connected reductive if and only if it is isomorphic to a smooth normal subgroup of a connected reductive group. We compute the first Galois cohomology set H^1(R,G) of a quasi-connected reductive group G over the field R of real numbers in terms of a certain action of a subgroup of the Weyl group on the Galois cohomology of a fundamental quasi-tor…
Let $D$ be a connected component of a possibly disconnected reductive group $G$ over an algebraic closed field. We define a partition of $D$ into finitely many Strata each of which is a union of $G^0$-conjugacy classes of fixed dimension. In the case where $D=G^0$ this recovers a known partition.
Cohomological induction gives an algebraic method for constructing representations of a real reductive Lie group $G$ from irreducible representations of reductive subgroups. Beilinson-Bernstein localization alternatively gives a geometric method for constructing Harish-Chandra modules for $G$ from certain representations of a Cartan subgroup. The duality theorem of Hecht, Mili\vcić, Schmid and Wolf establishes a relationship between modules cohomologically induced from minimal parabolics and the cohomology of the $\ms{D}$-modules on the complex flag variety for $G$ determined by the Beilinson-…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a number field $F$, and let $S$ be a set (finite or infinite) of places of $F$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the surjectivity of the localization map from $H^1(F,G)$ to the "direct sum" of the sets $H^1(F_v,G)$ where $v$ runs over $S$. In the appendices, we give a new construction of the abelian Galois cohomology of a reductive group over a field of arbitrary characteristic.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 and let G be a connected reductive group over k. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G and let g and b be the Lie algebras of G and B. Denote the first Frobenius kernels of G and B by G_1 and B_1. Furthermore, denote the algebras of polynomial functions on G and g by k[G] and k[g], and similar for B and b. The group G acts on k[G] via the conjugation action and on k[g] via the adjoint action. Similarly, B acts on k[B] via the conjugation action and on k[b] via the adjoint action. We show that, under certain mild assumptions, the cohomology …
Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field. We define a decomposition of G into finitely many strata such that each stratum is a union of conjugacy classes of fixed dimension; the strata are indexed by a set defined in terms of the Weyl group which is independent of the characteristic. In the case where $G$ is replaced by the corresponding loop group we define an analogous decomposition of the set of regular semisimple compact elements into countably many strata.
We consider selfinjective Artin algebras whose cohomology groups are finitely generated over a central ring of cohomology operators. For such an algebra, we show that the representation dimension is strictly greater than the maximal complexity occurring among its modules. This provides a unified approach to computing lower bounds for the representation dimension of group algebras, exterior algebras and Artin complete intersections. We also obtain new examples of classes of algebras with arbitrarily large representation dimension.
In some recent work, Lusztig outlined a generalisation of the construction of Deligne and Lusztig to reductive groups over finite rings coming from the ring of integers in a local field, modulo some power of the maximal ideal. Lusztig conjectures that all irreducible representations of these groups are contained in the cohomology of a certain family of varieties. We show that, contrary to what was expected, there exist representations that cannot be realised by the varieties given by Lusztig. Moreover, we show how the remaining representations in the case under consideration can be realised in…
Let X be a locally symmetric space associated to a reductive algebraic group G defined over Q. L-modules are a combinatorial analogue of constructible sheaves on the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of X; they were introduced in [math.RT/0112251]. That paper also introduced the micro-support of an L-module, a combinatorial invariant that to a great extent characterizes the cohomology of the associated sheaf. The theory has been successfully applied to solve a number of problems concerning the intersection cohomology and weighted cohomology of the reductive Borel-Serre compactification [m…
This is a semi--expository update and rewrite of my 1974 AMS AMS Memoir describing Plancherel formulae and partial Dolbeault cohomology realizations for standard tempered representations for general real reductive Lie groups. Even after so many years, much of that Memoir is up to date, but of course there have been a number of refinements, advances and new developments, most of which have applied to smaller classes of real reductive Lie groups. Here we rewrite that AMS Memoir in in view of these advances and indicate the ties with some of the more recent (or at least less classical) approaches…
Schneider-Stuhler and Vigneras have used cosheaves on the affine Bruhat-Tits building to construct natural finite type projective resolutions for admissible representations of reductive p-adic groups in characteristic not equal to p. We use a system of idempotent endomorphisms of a representation with certain properties to construct a cosheaf and a sheaf on the building. We establish that these are acyclic and compute homology and cohomology with these coefficients. This implies Bernstein's result that certain subcategories of the category of representations are Serre subcategories. Furthermor…
We discuss recent developments in the Langlands program for function fields, and in the geometric Langlands program. In particular we explain a canonical decomposition of the space of cuspidal automorphic forms for any reductive group G over a function field, indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof uses the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence.
For a connected reductive group G and a finite-dimensional G-module V, we study the invariant Hilbert scheme that parameterizes closed G-stable subschemes of V affording a fixed, multiplicity-finite representation of G in their coordinate ring. We construct an action on this invariant Hilbert scheme of a maximal torus T of G, together with an open T-stable subscheme admitting a good quotient. The fibers of the quotient map classify affine G-schemes having a prescribed categorical quotient by a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We show that V contains only finitely many multiplicity-free G-subva…
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a $p$-adic field or number field $K$, and let $V$ be a $K$-linear faithful representation of $G$. A lattice $Λ$ in the vector space $V$ defines a model $\hat{G}_Λ$ of $G$ over $\mathscr{O}_K$. One may wonder to what extent $Λ$ is determined by the group scheme $\hat{G}_Λ$. In this paper we prove that up to a natural equivalence relation on the set of lattices there are only finitely many $Λ$ corresponding to one model $\hat{G}_Λ$. Furthermore, we relate this fact to moduli spaces of abelian varieties as follows: let $\mathscr{A}_{g,n}$ be the moduli …
We show that finitely generated cohomology is invariant under separable equivalences for all algebras. As a result, we obtain a proof of the finite generation of cohomology for finite symmetric tensor categories in characteristic zero, as conjectured by Etingof and Ostrik. Moreover, for such categories we also determine the representation dimension and the Rouquier dimension of the stable category. Finally, we recover a number of results on the cohomology of stably equivalent and singularly equivalent algebras.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group and $B$ be a Borel subgroup defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper, the authors study the existence of generic $G$-cohomology and its stability with rational $G$-cohomology groups via the use of methods from the authors' earlier work. New results on the vanishing of $G$ and $B$-cohomology groups are presented. Furthermore, vanishing ranges for the associated finite group cohomology of $G({\mathbb F}_{q})$ are established which generalizes earlier work of Hiller, in addition to stability ranges for gener…
We show that the cohomology for some 2-generated selfinjective algebras is finitely generated. This applies in particular to the algebras $A5(β)$ for $β\neq 0$ in the classification of connected Hopf algebras of dimension $p^3$ over characteristic $p$ by Nguyen-Wang-Wang.
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field k and let B be a Borel subgroup in G. We demonstrate how a number of results on the cohomology of line bundles on the flag manifold G/B have had interesting consequences in the representation theory for G. And vice versa. Our focus is on the case where the characteristic of k is positive. In this case both the vanishing behavior of the cohomology modules for a line bundle on G/B and the G-structures of the non-zero cohomology modules are still very much open problems. We give an account of the developments over the years, trying to illustrate w…
Let G be a finite group and let k be a field of characteristic p. Given a finitely generated indecomposable non-projective kG-module M, we conjecture that if the Tate cohomology $\HHHH^*(G, M)$ of G with coefficients in M is finitely generated over the Tate cohomology ring $\HHHH^*(G, k)$, then the support variety V_G(M) of M is equal to the entire maximal ideal spectrum V_G(k). We prove various results which support this conjecture. The converse of this conjecture is established for modules in the connected component of k in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver for kG, but it is shown to be fal…
Let $G$ be a connected complex simple Lie group, and let $\widehat{G}^{\mathrm{d}}$ be the set of all equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations with non-vanishing Dirac cohomology. We show that $\widehat{G}^{\mathrm{d}}$ consists of two parts: finitely many scattered representations, and finitely many strings of representations. Moreover, the strings of $\widehat{G}^{\mathrm{d}}$ come from $\widehat{L}^{\mathrm{d}}$ via cohomological induction and they are all in the good range. Here $L$ runs over the Levi factors of proper $θ$-stable parabolic subgroups of $G$. It follows tha…
Let $A$ be a finite dimensional symmetric Hopf algebra over a field $k$. We show that there are $A$-modules whose Tate cohomology is not finitely generated over the Tate cohomology ring of $A$. However, we also construct $A$-modules which have finitely generated Tate cohomology. It turns out that if a module in a connected component of the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver associated to $A$ has finitely generated Tate cohomology, then so does every module in that component. We apply some of these finite generation results on Tate cohomology to an algebra defined by Radford and to the restricted u…
We present a strategy to use the stable trace formula to compute growth in the cohomology of cocompact arithmetic lattices in a reductive group $G$. We then implement it in the case where $G = U(2,1)$, using results of Rogwaski. This recovers a result of Marshall.
Let $\bold G$ be a reductive algebraic group defined over $\Q$, and let $Γ$ be an arithmetic subgroup of $\bold G(\Q)$. Let $X$ be the symmetric space for $\bold G(\R)$, and assume $X$ is contractible. Then the cohomology (mod torsion) of the space $X/Γ$ is the same as the cohomology of $Γ$. In turn, $X/Γ$ will have the same cohomology as $W/Γ$, if $W$ is a ``spine'' in $X$. This means that $W$ (if it exists) is a deformation retract of $X$ by a $Γ$-equivariant deformation retraction, that $W/Γ$ is compact, and that $\dim W$ equals the virtual cohomological dimension (vcd) of $Γ$. Then $W$ can…
For a connected reductive group $G$ over ${\mathbb R}$, we study cohomological $A$-parameters, which are Arthur parameters with the infinitesimal character of a finite-dimensional representation of $G({\mathbb C})$. We prove a structure theorem for such $A$-parameters, and deduce from it that a morphism of $L$-groups which takes a regular unipotent element to a regular unipotent element respects cohomological $A$-parameters. This is used to give complete understanding of cohomological $A$-parameters for all classical groups. We review the parametrization of Adams-Johnson packets of cohomologic…
Let the reductive group G act on the finitely generated commutative k-algebra A. We ask if the finite generation property of the ring of invariants A^G extends to the full rational cohomology ring H^*(G,A). We confirm this when G=SL_2 and also when the characteristic of k is large and the action on A is replaced by the `contracted' action on the Grosshans graded ring gr(A). In the printed version of this paper the first level of some spectral sequences was misidentified as the second. This affects twelve subscripts. We have corrected them (in 3.10, 4.11, 4.12).
Recall the classical result that the cup product structure constants for the singular cohomology with integral coefficients of the Grassmannian of r-planes coincide with the Littlewood-Richardson tensor product structure constants for GL(r). Specifically, the result asserts that there is an explicit ring homomorphism ϕ: \Rep _{\poly}(GL(r)) to H^*(Gr(r, n)), where Gr(r, n) denotes the Grassmannian of r-planes in C^n and \Rep_{\poly} (GL(r)) denotes the polynomial representation ring of GL(r). This work seeks to achieve one possible generalization of this classical result for GL(r) and the Gras…
We consider the finite generation property for cohomology of a finite tensor category C, which requires that the self-extension algebra of the unit Ext*_C(1,1) is a finitely generated algebra and that, for each object V in C, the graded extension group Ext*_C(1,V) is a finitely generated module over the aforementioned algebra. We prove that this cohomological finiteness property is preserved under duality (with respect to exact module categories) and taking the Drinfeld center, under suitable restrictions on C. For example, the stated result holds when C is a braided tensor category of odd Fro…
We show that the continuous cohomology groups of a $ p $-adic reductive group with coefficients in the locally analytic vectors of an admissible $ \mathbb{Q}_p $-Banach space representation are homeomorphic to those with coefficients in the Banach space representation itself. Moreover, we deduce that the canonical topologies on those continuous cohomology groups are Hausdorff and are the uniquely determined finest locally convex topologies.
We consider a class of self-injective special biserial algebras $Λ_N$ over a field $K$ and show that the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Λ_N$ is a finitely generated $K$-algebra. Moreover the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Λ_N$ modulo nilpotence is a finitely generated commutative $K$-algebra of Krull dimension two. As a consequence the conjecture of Snashall-Solberg \cite{SS}, concerning the Hochschild cohomology ring modulo nilpotence, holds for this class of algebras.
In a previous paper it was shown that a certain family of varieties suggested by Lusztig, is not enough to construct all irreducible complex representations of reductive groups over finite rings coming from the ring of integers in a local field, modulo a power of the maximal ideal. In this paper we define a generalisation of Lusztig's varieties, corresponding to an extension of the maximal unramified extension of the local field. We show in a particular case that all irreducible representations appear in the cohomology of some extended variety. We conclude with a discussion about reformulation…
This is a translation in English of version 5 of the article arXiv:1404.3998, which is itself an introduction to arXiv:1209.5352. We explain all the ideas of the proof of the following theorem. For any reductive group G over a global function field, we use the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence to prove the global Langlands correspondence for G in the "automorphic to Galois" direction. Moreover we obtain a canonical decomposition of the spaces of cuspidal automorphic forms indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof does not rely at a…
We prove that the Drinfeld double of an arbitrary finite group scheme has finitely generated cohomology. That is to say, for G any finite group scheme, and D(G) the Drinfeld double of the group ring kG, we show that the self-extension algebra of the trivial representation for D(G) is a finitely generated algebra, and that for each D(G)-representation V the extensions from the trivial representation to V form a finitely generated module over the aforementioned algebra. As a corollary, we find that all categories rep(G)*_M dual to rep(G) are of also of finite type (i.e. have finitely generated c…
This paper is about nilpotent orbits of reductive groups over local non-Archimedean fields. In this paper we will try to identify for which groups there are only finitely many nilpotent orbits, for which groups the nilpotent orbits are separable and for which groups Howe's conjecture holds. For general reductive groups we get some partial results. For split reductive groups we get a classification in terms of the root data and the characteristic of the underlying local field.
For arbitrary reductive groups $G$ defined over a finite field, we decompose Newton strata in the special fiber of moduli spaces of global $G$-shtukas into a product of Rapoport-Zink spaces and Igusa varieties. This allows us to compare the $\ell$-adic cohomology of these spaces together with the various actions on them.
A subalgebra of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{g}$ determines $\mathfrak{h}$-representation $ρ$ on $\mathfrak{m}=\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{h}$. In this note we discuss how to reconstruct $\mathfrak{g}$ from $(\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{m},ρ)$. In other words, we find all the ingredients for building non-reductive Klein geometries. The Lie algebra cohomology plays a decisive role here.
Let Y=G/L be a flag manifold for a reductive G and K a maximal compact subgroup of G. We define an equivariant differential operator on G/(L cap K) playing the role of an equivariant Dolbeault Laplacian when restricted to the complex manifold G/L, using a distribution transverse to the fibers and satisfying the Hormander condition. We prove here that this operator is not maximal hypoelliptic when G=U(p,q).
We prove new results in generalized Harish-Chandra theory providing a description of the so-called Brauer--Lusztig blocks in terms of the information encoded in the $\ell$-adic cohomology of Deligne--Lusztig varieties. Then, we propose new conjectures for finite reductive groups by considering geometric analogues of the $\ell$-local structures that lie at the heart of the local-global counting conjectures. For large primes, our conjectures coincide with the counting conjectures thanks to a connection established by Broué, Fong and Srinivasan between $\ell$-structures and their geometric counte…
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a finite field with a maximal unipotent subgroup $U$, we consider certain sheaves on $G/U$ defined by Kazhdan and Laumon and show that their cohomology produces the cohomology of the Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We then use this comparison to give a new proof of a result of Dudas.
