Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over a field k. Let A be a finitely generated commutative k-algebra on which G acts rationally by k-algebra automorphisms. Invariant theory tells that the ring of invariants A^G=H^0(G,A) is finitely generated. We show that in fact the full cohomology ring H^*(G,A) is finitely generated. The proof is based on the strict polynomial bifunctor cohomology classes constructed by the junior author. We also continue the study of bifunctor cohomology of the divided powers of a Frobenius twist of the adjoint representation.
This text is an updated version of material used for a course at Université de Nantes, part of `Functor homology and applications', April 23-27, 2012. The proof by Touzé of my conjecture on cohomological finite generation (CFG) has been one of the successes of functor homology. We will not treat the original proof in any detail. Instead we will focus on a formality conjecture of Chałupnik that leads to second generation proof of the existence of the universal classes of Touzé.
For a connected reductive group $G$ over ${\mathbb R}$, we study cohomological $A$-parameters, which are Arthur parameters with the infinitesimal character of a finite-dimensional representation of $G({\mathbb C})$. We prove a structure theorem for such $A$-parameters, and deduce from it that a morphism of $L$-groups which takes a regular unipotent element to a regular unipotent element respects cohomological $A$-parameters. This is used to give complete understanding of cohomological $A$-parameters for all classical groups. We review the parametrization of Adams-Johnson packets of cohomologic…
We discuss a cohomological construction of representations of a reductive group over the ring of power series over a finite field modulo the r-th power of the maximal ideal. The case r=1 goes back to Deligne and the author. The case where r is greater than 1 was given without proof in the author's work in 1977. Here we supply the proofs and give some further results.
Cohomological induction gives an algebraic method for constructing representations of a real reductive Lie group $G$ from irreducible representations of reductive subgroups. Beilinson-Bernstein localization alternatively gives a geometric method for constructing Harish-Chandra modules for $G$ from certain representations of a Cartan subgroup. The duality theorem of Hecht, Mili\vcić, Schmid and Wolf establishes a relationship between modules cohomologically induced from minimal parabolics and the cohomology of the $\ms{D}$-modules on the complex flag variety for $G$ determined by the Beilinson-…
Let $G$ be a real reductive group, and let $χ$ be a character of a reductive subgroup $H$ of $G$. We construct $χ$-invariant linear functionals on certain cohomologically induced representations of $G$, and show that these linear functionals do not vanish on the bottom layers. Applying this construction, we prove two archimedean non-vanishing assumptions, which are crucial in the study of special values of L-functions via modular symbols.
Let G be a connected reductive group over a finite field F_q. A map from irreducible representations of G(F_q) to semisimple classes in the dual group was defined by a cohomological method by Deligne and the author in 1976. Here we show that when q is large enough this map has an alternative (non-cohomological) definition.
We study cohomological induction for a pair $(\frak g,\frak k)$, $\frak g$ being an infinite dimensional locally reductive Lie algebra and $\frak k \subset\frak g$ being of the form $\frak k_0 + C_\gg(\frak k_0)$, where $\frak k_0\subset\frak g$ is a finite dimensional reductive in $\frak g$ subalgebra and $C_{\gg} (\frak k_0)$ is the centralizer of $\frak k_0$ in $\frak g$. We prove a general non-vanishing and $\frak k$-finiteness theorem for the output. This yields in particular simple $(\frak g,\frak k)$-modules of finite type over $\frak k$ which are analogs of the fundamental series of ge…
Alain Connes and Nigel Higson pointed out in the 1990s that the Connes-Kasparov "conjecture"' for the K-theory of reduced groupe $C^\ast$-algebras seemed, in the case of reductive Lie groups, to be a cohomological echo of a conjecture of George Mackey concerning the rigidity of representation theory along the deformation from a reductive Lie group to its Cartan motion group. For complex semisimple groups, Nigel Higson established in 2008 that Mackey's analogy is a real phenomenon and does lead to a simple proof of the Connes-Kasparov isomorphism. We here turn to more general reductive groups a…
Let $K$ be a local non-Archimedean field of positive characteristic and let $L$ be the degree-$n$ unramified extension of $K$. Via the local Langlands and Jacquet-Langlands correspondences, to each sufficiently generic multiplicative character of $L$, one can associate an irreducible representation of the multiplicative group of the central division algebra $D$ of invariant $1/n$ over $K$. In 1979, Lusztig proposed a cohomological construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups analogous to Deligne-Lusztig theory for finite reductive groups. In this paper we prove th…
Let $\bold G$ be a reductive algebraic group defined over $\Q$, and let $Γ$ be an arithmetic subgroup of $\bold G(\Q)$. Let $X$ be the symmetric space for $\bold G(\R)$, and assume $X$ is contractible. Then the cohomology (mod torsion) of the space $X/Γ$ is the same as the cohomology of $Γ$. In turn, $X/Γ$ will have the same cohomology as $W/Γ$, if $W$ is a ``spine'' in $X$. This means that $W$ (if it exists) is a deformation retract of $X$ by a $Γ$-equivariant deformation retraction, that $W/Γ$ is compact, and that $\dim W$ equals the virtual cohomological dimension (vcd) of $Γ$. Then $W$ can…
For a domestic finite group scheme, we give a direct description of the Euclidean components in its Auslander-Reiten quiver via the McKay-quiver of a finite linearly reductive subgroup scheme of $SL(2)$. Moreover, for a normal subgroup scheme $\mathcal{N}$ of a finite group scheme $\mathcal{G}$, we show that there is a connection between the ramification indices of the restriction morphism $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V}_{\mathcal{N}})\rightarrow\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V}_{\mathcal{G}})$ between their projectivized cohomological support varieties and the ranks of the tubes in their Auslander-Reiten quiver…
In 1979, Lusztig proposed a cohomological construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups, analogous to Deligne-Lusztig theory for finite reductive groups. In this paper we establish a new instance of Lusztig's program. Precisely, let $X$ be the $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig ind-scheme associated to a division algebra $D$ of invariant k/n over a non-Archimedean local field $K$. We study its homology groups by establishing a Deligne-Lusztig theory for families of finite unipotent groups that arise as subquotients of $D^\times$. The homology of $X$ induces a natural corresp…
