We prove some basic properties of Donaldson's flow of surfaces in a hyperkahler 4-manifold. When the initial submanifold is symplectic with respect to one Kähler form and Lagrangian with respect to another, we show that certain kinds of singularities cannot form, and we prove a convergence result under a condition related to one considered by M.-T. Wang for the mean curvature flow.

In this paper, we construct complex metric structures on complex hypersurfaces in hyperkahler manifolds. This construction is that in contact geometry.
We give an equivalent definition of compact locally conformally hyperkähler manifolds in terms of the existence of a nondegenerate complex two-form with natural properties. This is a conformal analogue of Beauville's theorem stating that a compact Kähler manifold admitting a holomorphic symplectic form is hyperkähler.
We prove that if $B$ is a $k$-positive holomorphic line bundle on a compact hyperkähler manifold $M,$ then $H^p (M,Ω^q\otimes B)=0$ for $p>n+[\frac{k}{2}]$ and any nonnegative integer $q.$ In a special case $k=0$ and $q=0$ we recover a vanishing theorem of Verbitsky's with a little stronger assumption.
A non-linear generalization of the Dirac operator in 4-dimensions, obtained by replacing the spinor representation with a hyperKahler manifold admitting certain symmetries, is considered. We show that the existence of a covariantly constant, generalized spinor defines a Kahler structure on the base 4-dimensional manifold. For a class of hyperKahler manifolds obtained via hyperKahler reduction, we also show that a harmonic spinor, under mild conditions, defines a symplectic structure. Finally, we show that if a covariantly constant, generalized spinor satisfies generalized Seiberg-Witten equati…
Mainly motivated by a conjecture of Alesker and Verbitsky, we study a class of elliptic equations on compact hyperhermitian manifolds. By adapting the approach of Székelyhidi to the hypercomplex setting, we prove some a priori estimates for solutions to such equations. In the estimate of the Laplacian we assume the existence of a flat hyperkähler metric. As an application of our results we prove that the quaternionic analogue of the Hessian equation can always be solved on compact flat hyperkähler manifolds.
In this paper, we firstly prove that every hyper-Lagrangian submanifold $L^{2n} (n > 1)$ in a hyperkähler $4n$-manifold is a complex Lagrangian submanifold. Secondly, we demonstrate an optimal rigidity theorem with the condition on the complex phase map of self-shrinking surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$. Last but not least, by using the previous rigidity result, we show that the mean curvature flow from a closed surface with the image of the complex phase map contained in $\mathbb{S}^2\setminus\overline{\mathbb{S}}^{1}_{+}$ in a hyperkähler $4$-manifold does not develop any Type \Rmn{1} singularity.
Generalizing work of Haydys and Hitchin, we prove the existence of a hyperholomorphic line bundle on certain hyperkähler manifolds that do not necessarily admit an $S^1$ action. As examples, we consider the moduli space of (non-strongly) parabolic Higgs bundles, the moduli space of solutions to Nahm's equations, and Nakajima quiver varieties.
In this article, we study a generalisation of the Seiberg-Witten equations, replacing the spinor representation with a hyperKahler manifold equipped with certain symmetries. Central to this is the construction of a (non-linear) Dirac operator acting on the sections of the non-linear fibre-bundle. For hyperKahler manifolds admitting a hyperKahler potential, we derive a transformation formula for the Dirac operator under the conformal change of metric on the base manifold. As an application, we show that when the hyperKahler manifold is of dimension four, then away from a singular set, the equat…
Mainly motivated by a conjecture of Alesker and Verbitsky, we study a class of fully non-linear elliptic equations on certain compact hyperhermitian manifolds. By adapting the approach of Székelyhidi to the hypercomplex setting, we prove some a priori estimates for solutions to such equations under the assumption of existence of $\mathcal{C}$-subsolutions. In the estimate of the quaternionic Laplacian, we need to further assume the existence of a flat hyperkähler metric. As an application of our results we prove that the quaternionic analogue of the Hessian equation and Monge-Ampère equation f…
Inspired by the work of Leung-Wan, we study the mean curvature flow in hyperkähler manifolds starting from hyper-Lagrangian submanifolds, a class of middle dimensional submanifolds, which contains the class of complex Lagrangian submanifolds. For each hyper-Lagrangian submanifold, we define a new energy concept called the "twistor energy" by means of the associated twistor family (i.e. 2-sphere of complex structures). We will show that the mean curvature flow starting at any hyper-Lagrangian submanifold with sufficiently small twistor energy will exist for all time and converge to a complex La…
Let X be a compact 4-manifold with boundary. We study the space of hyperkähler triples on X, modulo diffeomorphisms which are the identity on the boundary. We prove that this moduli space is a smooth infinite-dimensional manifold and describe the tangent space in terms of triples of closed anti-self-dual 2-forms. We also explore the corresponding boundary value problem: a hyperkähler triple restricts to a closed framing of the bundle of 2-forms on the boundary; we identify the infinitesimal deformations of this closed framing that can be filled in to hyperkähler deformations of the original tr…
We prove an estimate for Donaldson's $Q$-operator on a prequantized compact symplectic manifold. This estimate is an ingredient in the recent result of Keller and Lejmi about a symplectic generalization of Donaldson's lower bound for the $L^2$-norm of the Hermitian scalar curvature.
We find the shape of the Donaldson invariants of a 4-manifold with b_1=0 and b^+>1, which may be not of simple type. The invariants appear as the q^0 coefficient of a expression given in terms of modular forms (as was predicted by Moore and Witten). We re-express the formula using complete elliptic integrals to prove a conjecture of Kronheimer and Mrowka on the Donaldson invariants of non-simple type 4-manifolds.
In this note, using the recent compactness results of Tian and Chen-Donaldson-Sun, we prove the K-semistable version of Yau-Tian-Donaldson correspondence for Fano manifolds.
A smooth four manifold is of finite type $r$ if its Donaldson invariant satisfies D((x^2-4)^r)=0. We prove that every simply connected manifold is of finite type by using the structure of Donaldson invariants in the presence of immersed spheres. More precisely we prove that if a manifold X contains an immersed sphere with $p$ positive double points and a non-negative self-intersection $a$, then it is of finite type with r = [(2p+2-a)/4].
Let $M$ be a compact irreducible hyperkahler manifold, from Bogomolov inequality [V1] we obtain forbidden values of the second Betti number $b_2$ in arbitrary dimension. UPD: Unfortunately, decomposition of dual to BBF-form is not right in the main theorem. Instead of this work, take a look on recent preprints of Sawon and me on boundedness of $b_2$ for hyperkähler manifolds.
We introduce an analogue in hyperkahler geometry of the symplectic implosion, in the case of SU(n) actions. Our space is a stratified hyperkahler space which can be defined in terms of quiver diagrams. It also has a description as a non-reductive geometric invariant theory quotient.
In this paper, the HyperKahler contact distribution of a 3-Sasakian manifold is studied. To analyze the curvature properties of this distribution, the special metric connection $\bar{\nabla}$ is defined. This metric connection is completely determined by HyperKahler contact distribution. We prove that HyperKahler contact distribution is of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures if and only if its 3-Sasakian manifold is of constant $φ_α$-sectional curvatures. Moreover, it is shown that there is an interesting relation between the sectional curvatures of $φ_α$-planes on $TM$ of metric connect…
In the present paper we prove that, on a hyperkähler manifold, walls of the kähler cone and extremal rays of the Mori cone are determined by all divisors satisfying certain numerical conditions.
The Kobayashi pseudometric on a complex manifold is the maximal pseudometric such that any holomorphic map from the Poincaré disk to the manifold is distance-decreasing. Kobayashi has conjectured that this pseudometric vanishes on Calabi-Yau manifolds. Using ergodicity of complex structures, we prove this conjecture for any hyperkähler manifold that admits a deformation with two Lagrangian fibrations and whose Picard rank is not maximal. The Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture claims that parabolic nef line bundles on hyperkähler manifolds are semi-ample. We prove that the Kobayashi pseudom…
We consider the generalized Kahler structures (g,J_+,J_-) that arise on a hyperkahler manifold (M,g,I,J,K) when we choose J_+ and J_- from the twistor space of M. We find a relation between semichiral and arctic superfields which can be used to determine the generalized Kahler potential for hyperkahler manifolds whose description in projective superspace is fully understood. We use this relation to determine an S^2-family of generalized Kahler potentials for Euclidean space and for the Eguchi-Hanson geometry. Cotangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces constitute a class of hyperkahler man…
We study relations between quaternionic Riemannian manifolds admitting different types of symmetries. We show that any hyperKahler manifold admitting hyperKahler potential and triholomorphic action of S^1 can be constructed from another hyperKahler manifold (of lower dimention) with an action of S^1 which fixes one complex structure and rotates the other two and vice versa. We also study corresponding quaternionic Kahler manifolds equipped with a quaternionic Kahler action of the circle. In particular we show that any positive quaternionic Kahler manifold with S^1 symmetry admits a Kahler metr…
This is an exposition of the Donaldson geometric flow on the space of symplectic forms on a closed smooth four-manifold, representing a fixed cohomology class. The original work appeared in [1].
The aim of this paper is to solve a uniform version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for polarized toric manifolds. Also, we show a combinatorial sufficient condition for uniform relative K-polystability.
We develop the foundation of the complex symplectic geometry of Lagrangian subvarieties in a hyperkahler manifold. We establish a characterization, a Chern number inequality, topological and geometrical properties of Lagrangian submanifolds. We discuss a category of Lagrangian subvarieties and its relationship with the theory of Lagrangian intersection. We also introduce and study extensively a normalized Legendre transformation of Lagrangian subvarieties under a birational transformation of projective hyperkahler manifolds. We give a Plucker type formula for Lagrangian intersections under thi…
We propose a generalization of the Hodge $dd_c$-lemma to the case of hyperkähler manifolds. As an application of this result we derive the global construction of the fourth order transgression of the Chern character forms of hyperholomorphic bundles over compact hyperkähler manifolds. At the second part of the paper we consider the fourth order transgression for the infinite dimensional bundle arising from local families of hyperkähler manifolds. We propose a local construction of the fourth order transgression of the Chern character form. We derive an explicit expression for arising hypertors…
For the sake of hyperk{ä}hler SYZ conjecture, finding holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations becomes an important issue. Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are real dimension $4n$ non-compact hyperk{ä}hler manifolds which are quaternion analog of toric varieties. The $n$ dimensional residue circle action on it admitting a hyperk{ä}hler moment map. We use the complex part of this moment map to construct a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with generic fiber diffeomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$, and study the singular fibers.
Let M be a simple hyperkahler manifold. Kuga-Satake construction gives an embedding of H^2(M,C) into the second cohomology of a torus, compatible with the Hodge structure. We construct a torus T and an embedding of the graded cohomology space H^*(M,C) \to H^{*+l}(T,C) for some l, which is compatible with the Hodge structures and the Poincare pairing. Moreover, this embedding is compatible with an action of the Lie algebra generated by all Lefschetz sl(2)-triples on M.
We propose an infinite-dimensional generalization of Kronheimer's construction of families of hyperkahler manifolds resolving flat orbifold quotients of $\mathbb{R}^4$. As in [Kro89], these manifolds are constructed as hyperkahler quotients of affine spaces. This leads to a study of \emph{singular equivariant instantons} in various dimensions. In this paper, we study singular equivariant Nahm data to produce the family of $D_2$ asymptotically locally flat (ALF) manifolds as a deformation of the flat orbifold $(\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1)/Z_2$. We furthermore introduce a notion of stability for Na…
We prove that every suitable $4$-manifold with $b_1=0$ and with an embedded Riemann surface of genus $2$ is of simple type. We find a relationship between the basic classes of two of these $4$-manifolds and those of the connected sum along the Riemann surface.
We prove the existence of unique smooth solutions to the quaternionic Monge-Ampère equation for $(n-1)$-quaternionic plurisubharmonic functions on a hyperKähler manifold and thus obtain solutions for the quaternionic form type equation. We derive $C^0$ estimate by establishing a Cherrier-type inequality as in Tosatti and Weinkove [22]. By adopting the approach of Dinew and Sroka [9] to our context, we obtain $C^1$ and $C^2$ estimates without assuming the flatness of underlying hyperKähler metric comparing to previous results [14].
We prove a gradient estimate for Donaldson's equation \[ω\wedge(χ+\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}φ)^{n-1}=e^F(χ+\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}φ)^n\] (and its parabolic analog) on an $n$-dimensional compact Kähler manifold $(M,ω)$ with another Hermitian metric $χ$ directly from the uniform upper bounds for $tr_ωχ_φ$ and Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci (ABP) maximum principle.
We describe the relation between supersymmetric sigma-models on hyperkahler manifolds, projective superspace, and twistor space. We review the essential aspects and present a coherent picture with a number of new results.
Let (M,I,J,K) be a hyperkahler manifold of real dimension 4n, and L a non-trivial holomorphic line bundle on (M,I). Using the quaternionic Dolbeault complex, we prove the following vanishing theorem for holomorphic cohomology of L. If the Chern class c_1(L) lies in the closure $\hat K$ of the dual Kahler cone, then $H^i(L)=0$ for i>n. If c_1(L) lies in the opposite cone $-\hat K$, then $H^i(L)=0$ for i<n. Finally, if $c_1(L)$ is neither in $\hat K$ nor in $-\hat K$, then $H^i(L)=0$ for $i\neq n$.
Given a projective hyperkahler manifold with a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration, we prove that hyperkahler metrics with volume of the torus fibers shrinking to zero collapse in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense (and smoothly away from the singular fibers) to a compact metric space which is a half-dimensional special Kahler manifold outside a singular set of real Hausdorff codimension 2 and is homeomorphic to the base projective space.
Let $M$ be a compact complex manifold. The corresponding Teichmuller space $\Teich$ is a space of all complex structures on $M$ up to the action of the group of isotopies. The group $Γ$ of connected components of the diffeomorphism group (known as the mapping class group) acts on $\Teich$ in a natural way. An ergodic complex structure is the one with a $Γ$-orbit dense in $\Teich$. Let $M$ be a complex torus of complex dimension $\geq 2$ or a hyperkahler manifold with $b_2>3$. We prove that $M$ is ergodic, unless $M$ has maximal Picard rank (there is a countable number of such $M$). This is use…
The wall-crossing formula for Donaldson invariants of smooth, simply connected four manifolds with $b^+=1$ is shown to be a topological invariant of the manifold for reducible connections with two or fewer singular points. The explicit formulas derived agree with those of Ellingsrud and Gottische and Friedman and Qin for algebraic manifolds.
Hyperkahler quotients by non-free actions are typically highly singular, but are remarkably still partitioned into smooth hyperkahler manifolds. We show that these partitions are topological stratifications, in a strong sense. We also endow the quotients with global Poisson structures which induce the hyperkahler structures on the strata. Finally, we give a local model which shows that these quotients are locally isomorphic to linear complex-symplectic reductions in the GIT sense. These results can be thought of as the hyperkahler analogues of Sjamaar-Lerman's theorems for symplectic reduction…
Let $M$ be a compact hyperkahler manifold with maximal holonomy (IHS). The group $H^2(M, R)$ is equipped with a quadratic form of signature $(3, b_2-3)$, called Bogomolov-Beauville-Fujiki (BBF) form. This form restricted to the rational Hodge lattice $H^{1,1}(M,Q)$, has signature $(1,k)$. This gives a hyperbolic Riemannian metric on the projectivisation of the positive cone in $H^{1,1}(M,Q)$, denoted by $H$. Torelli theorem implies that the Hodge monodromy group $Γ$ acts on $H$ with finite covolume, giving a hyperbolic orbifold $X=H/Γ$. We show that there are finitely many geodesic hypersurfac…
We study the moduli space M(G,A) of flat G-bundles on an Abelian surface A, where G is a compact, simple, simply connected, connected Lie group. Equivalently, M(G,A) is the (coarse) moduli space of s-equivalence classes of holomorphic semi-stable G_C-bundles with trivial Chern classes where G_C is the complexified group. M(G,A) has the structure of a hyperkahler orbifold. We show that when G is Sp(n) or SU(n), M(G,A) has a natural hyperkahler desingularization which we exhibit as a moduli space of G_C-bundles with an altered stability condition. In this way, we obtain the two known families of…
We study hyperkahler cones and their corresponding quaternion-Kahler spaces. We present a classification of 4(n-1)-dimensional quaternion-Kahler spaces with n abelian quaternionic isometries, based on dualizing superconformal tensor multiplets. These manifolds characterize the geometry of the hypermultiplet sector of perturbative moduli spaces of type-II strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold. As an example of our construction, we study the universal hypermultiplet in detail, and give three inequivalent tensor multiplet descriptions. We also comment on the construction of quaternion-Kah…
Let $(M,I,J,K)$ be a hyperkahler manifold, and $Z\subset (M,I)$ a complex subvariety in $(M,I)$. We say that $Z$ is trianalytic if it is complex analytic with respect to $J$ and $K$, and absolutely trianalytic if it is trianalytic with respect to any hyperkähler triple of complex structures $(M,I,J',K')$ containing $I$. For a generic complex structure $I$ on $M$, all complex subvarieties of $(M,I)$ are absolutely trianalytic. It is known that a normalization $Z'$ of a trianalytic subvariety is smooth; we prove that $b_2(Z')$ is no smaller than $b_2(M)$ when $M$ has maximal holonomy (that is, $…
Let S be an infinite-dimensional manifold of all symplectic, or hyperkahler, structures on a compact manifold M, and $Diff_0$ the connected component of its diffeomorphism group. The quotient $S/\Diff_0$ is called the Teichmuller space of symplectic (or hyperkahler) structures on M. MBM classes on a hyperkahler manifold M are cohomology classes which can be represented by a minimal rational curve on a deformation of M. We determine the Teichmuller space of hyperkahler structures on a hyperkahler manifold, identifying any of its connected components with an open subset of the Grassmannian $SO(b…
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold of volume V. We say that the symplectic packings of M by ellipsoids are unobstructed if any collection of disjoint symplectic ellipsoids (possibly of different sizes) of total volume less than V admits a symplectic embedding to M. We show that the symplectic packings by ellipsoids are unobstructed for all even-dimensional tori equipped with Kahler symplectic forms and all closed hyperkahler manifolds of maximal holonomy, or, more generally, for closed Campana simple manifolds (that is, Kahler manifolds that are not unions of their complex subvarieties), as…
Short survey based on talk given at the Institut Henri Poincare January 17th 2012, during program on surface groups. The aim was to describe some background results before describing in detail (in subsequent talks) the results of [Boa11c] related to wild character varieties and irregular mapping class groups.
Let $M$ be a hyperkaehler manifold, and $η$ a closed, positive (1,1)-form which is degenerate everywhere on $M$. We associate to $η$ a family of complex structures on $M$, called a degenerate twistor family, and parametrized by a complex line. When $η$ is a pullback of a Kaehler form under a Lagrangian fibration $L$, all the fibers of degenerate twistor family also admit a Lagrangian fibration, with the fibers isomorphic to that of $L$. Degenerate twistor families can be obtained by taking limits of twistor families, as one of the Kahler forms in the hyperkahler triple goes to $η$.
Let $M$ be a simple holomorphically symplectic manifold, that is, a simply connected holomorphically symplectic manifold of Kahler type with $h^{2,0}=1$. We prove that the group of holomorphic automorphisms of $M$ acts on the set of faces of its Kahler cone with finitely many orbits, whenever $b_2(M)\neq 5$. This is a version of the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for hyperkahler manifolds. The proof is based on the following observation, proven with ergodic theory. Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian orbifold of dimension at least three, constant negative curvature and finite volume, and $\{S_…
