We find the shape of the Donaldson invariants of a 4-manifold with b_1=0 and b^+>1, which may be not of simple type. The invariants appear as the q^0 coefficient of a expression given in terms of modular forms (as was predicted by Moore and Witten). We re-express the formula using complete elliptic integrals to prove a conjecture of Kronheimer and Mrowka on the Donaldson invariants of non-simple type 4-manifolds.
We prove an estimate for Donaldson's $Q$-operator on a prequantized compact symplectic manifold. This estimate is an ingredient in the recent result of Keller and Lejmi about a symplectic generalization of Donaldson's lower bound for the $L^2$-norm of the Hermitian scalar curvature.
In this note, using the recent compactness results of Tian and Chen-Donaldson-Sun, we prove the K-semistable version of Yau-Tian-Donaldson correspondence for Fano manifolds.
We use the equivariant localization formula to prove that the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of a compact smooth (K{ä}hler) test configuration coincides with the Futaki invariant of the induced action on the central fiber when this fiber is smooth or have orbifold singularities. We also localize the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of the deformation to the normal cone.
We prove some basic properties of Donaldson's flow of surfaces in a hyperkahler 4-manifold. When the initial submanifold is symplectic with respect to one Kähler form and Lagrangian with respect to another, we show that certain kinds of singularities cannot form, and we prove a convergence result under a condition related to one considered by M.-T. Wang for the mean curvature flow.
In this note, we consider a sequence of test configurations compatible with a Kaehler metric in $c_1(L)$ on a polarized algebraic manifold $(X,L)$. Then an explicit formula for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant $F_1$ for the sequence will be given.
A smooth four manifold is of finite type $r$ if its Donaldson invariant satisfies D((x^2-4)^r)=0. We prove that every simply connected manifold is of finite type by using the structure of Donaldson invariants in the presence of immersed spheres. More precisely we prove that if a manifold X contains an immersed sphere with $p$ positive double points and a non-negative self-intersection $a$, then it is of finite type with r = [(2p+2-a)/4].
In this note, given a polarized algebraic manifold $(X,L)$, we define the Donaldson-Futaki invariant for a sequence of test configurations for $(X,L)$ with exponents tending to infinity. This then allows us to define a strong version of K-stability or K-semistability for $(X,L)$. In particular, $(X,L)$ will be shown to be K-semistable in this strong sense if the polarization class $c_1(L)$ admits a constant scalar curvature Kaehler metric.
This is an exposition of the Donaldson geometric flow on the space of symplectic forms on a closed smooth four-manifold, representing a fixed cohomology class. The original work appeared in [1].
We establish a lower bound for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of optimal degenerations produced by the Kähler-Ricci flow in terms of the greatest Ricci lower bound on arbitrary Fano manifolds. As an application, we can generalize the finiteness of the Futaki invariants on Kähler-Ricci solitons obtained by Guo-Phong-Song-Sturm to the space of all Fano manifolds. Also, we discuss the relation to Hisamoto's inequality for the infimum of the $H$-functional.
We prove new adjunction inequalities for embedded surfaces in four-manifolds with non-negative self-intersection number by using the Donaldson invariants. These formulas are completely analogous to the ones obtained by Ozsváth and Szabó using the Seiberg-Witten invariants. To prove these relations, we give a fairly explicit description of the structure of the Fukaya-Floer homology of a surface times a circle. As an aside, we also relate the Floer homology of a surface times a circle with the cohomology of some symmetric products of the surface.
The aim of this paper is to solve a uniform version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for polarized toric manifolds. Also, we show a combinatorial sufficient condition for uniform relative K-polystability.
We prove that every suitable $4$-manifold with $b_1=0$ and with an embedded Riemann surface of genus $2$ is of simple type. We find a relationship between the basic classes of two of these $4$-manifolds and those of the connected sum along the Riemann surface.
We prove a gradient estimate for Donaldson's equation \[ω\wedge(χ+\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}φ)^{n-1}=e^F(χ+\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}φ)^n\] (and its parabolic analog) on an $n$-dimensional compact Kähler manifold $(M,ω)$ with another Hermitian metric $χ$ directly from the uniform upper bounds for $tr_ωχ_φ$ and Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci (ABP) maximum principle.
In this paper, assuming that a polarized algebraic manifold $(X,L)$ is strongly K-stable, we shall show that the polarization class $c_1(L)$ admits a constant scalar curvature Kaehler metric.
We extend the notion of basic classes (for the Donaldson invariants) to 4-manifolds with $b^+>1$ which are (potentially) not of simple type or satisfy $b_1 >0$. We also give a structure theorem for the Donaldson invariants of 4-manifolds with $b^+>1$, $b_1>0$ and of strong simple type.
The wall-crossing formula for Donaldson invariants of smooth, simply connected four manifolds with $b^+=1$ is shown to be a topological invariant of the manifold for reducible connections with two or fewer singular points. The explicit formulas derived agree with those of Ellingsrud and Gottische and Friedman and Qin for algebraic manifolds.
Observable structures of a topological field theory of AKSZ type are analyzed. From a double (or multiple) complex structure of observable algebras, new topological invariants are constructed. Especially, Donaldson polynomial invariants and their generalizations are constructed from a topological field theory of AKSZ type in 4 dimensions recently proposed.
In alignment with a programme by Donaldson and Thomas [DT], Thomas [Th] constructed a deformation invariant for smooth projective Calabi-Yau threefolds, which is now called the Donaldson-Thomas invariant, from the moduli space of (semi-)stable sheaves by using algebraic geometry techniques. In the same paper [Th], Thomas noted that certain perturbed Hermitian-Einstein equations might possibly produce an analytic theory of the invariant. This article sets up the equations on symplectic 6-manifolds, and gives the local model and structures of the moduli space coming from the equations. We then d…
We use Donaldson invariants of regular surfaces with p_g >0 to make quantitative statements about modulispaces of stable rank 2 sheaves. We give two examples: a quantitative existence theorem for stable bundles, and a computation of the rank of the canonical holomorphic two forms on the moduli space. The results are in some sense dual to the Donaldson and O'Grady non vanishing theorems because they use the Donaldson series of the surface as _input_. Results in purely algebraic geometric terms can be obtained by using the explicit form of the Donaldson series of the surface. The Donaldson serie…
A deformed Donaldson-Thomas connection for a manifold with a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structure, which we call a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-dDT connection, is a Hermitian connection on a Hermitian line bundle $L$ over a manifold with a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structure defined by fully nonlinear PDEs. It was first introduced by Lee and Leung as a mirror object of a Cayley cycle obtained by the real Fourier-Mukai transform and its alternative definition was suggested in our other paper. As the name indicates, a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-dDT connection can also be considered as an analogue of a Donaldson-Thomas connection (${\rm Spi…
We generalize Witten's conjectured formula relating Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants to manifolds of non-simple type, via equivariant localization techniques. This approach does not use the theory of non-abelian monopoles, but works directly on the Donaldson-Witten and Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces. We give a formal derivation of Witten's conjecture and its generalization, making use of an infinite dimensional version of the abelian localization theorem.
We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^1 x CP^1 directly in a chamber where the elliptic unfolding technique fails to work. This allows us to determine explicit formulas for its SU(2) and SO(3)-Donaldson invariants in terms of Mock modular forms.
In this paper, we solve a problem of Kobayashi posed in \cite{Ko4} by introducing a Donaldson type functional on the space $F^+(E)$ of strongly pseudo-convex complex Finsler metrics on $E$ -- a holomorphic vector bundle over a closed Kähler manifold $M$. This Donaldson type functional is a generalization in the complex Finsler geometry setting of the original Donaldson functional and has Finsler-Einstein metrics on $E$ as its only critical points, at which this functional attains the absolute minimum.
Given a complex 4-fold $X$ with an (Calabi-Yau 3-fold) anti-canonical divisor $Y$, we study relative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for this pair, which are elements in the Donaldson-Thomas cohomologies of $Y$. We also discuss gluing formulas which relate relative invariants and $DT_{4}$ invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds.
Let $X$ be a compact complex Calabi-Yau 4-fold. Under certain assumptions, we define Donaldson-Thomas type deformation invariants ($DT_{4}$ invariants) by studying moduli spaces of solutions to the Donaldson-Thomas equations on $X$. We also study sheaves counting problems on local Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We relate $DT_{4}$ invariants of $K_{Y}$ to the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the associated Fano 3-fold $Y$. When the Calabi-Yau 4-fold is toric, we adapt the virtual localization formula to define the corresponding equivariant $DT_{4}$ invariants. We also discuss the non-commutative version of …
Using Morse-Bott techniques adapted to the gauge-theoretic setting, we show that the limiting boundary values of the space of finite energy monopoles on a connected 3-manifold with at least two cylindrical ends provides an immersed Lagrangian submanifold of the vortex moduli space at infinity. By studying the signed intersections of such Lagrangians, we supply the analytic details of Donaldson's TQFT construction of the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold.
Let $X$ be a complex four-dimensional compact Calabi-Yau manifold equipped with a Kähler form $ω$ and a holomorphic four-form $Ω$. Under certain assumptions, we define Donaldson-Thomas type deformation invariants by studying the moduli space of the solutions of Donaldson-Thomas equations on the given Calabi-Yau manifold. We also study sheaves counting on local Calabi-Yau four-folds. We relate the sheaves countings over $K_{Y}$ with the Donaldson-Thomas invariants for the associated compact three-fold $Y$. In some very special cases, we prove the DT/GW correspondence for $X$. Finally, we comput…
We derive an explicit formula for the asymptotic slope of the Aubin-Yau functional along a Bergman geodesic on a surface of complex dimension 2, extending the work of Phong-Sturm on Riemann surfaces. This is equivalent to an explicit calculation of the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of a test configuration. The slope is given as a rational linear combination of period integrals of rational functions that sum to a rational number. The result gives a way to check directly whether a two dimensional projective variety is K-stable.
Eguchi, Ooguri, and Tachikawa recently conjectured a new moonshine phenomenon. They conjecture that the coefficients of a certain mock modular form H(tau), which arises from the K3 surface elliptic genus, are sums of dimensions of irreducible representations of the Mathieu group M24. We prove that H(tau) surprisingly also plays a significant role in the theory of Donaldson invariants. We prove that the Moore-Witten u-plane integrals for H(tau) are the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. This result then implies a moonshine phenomenon where these invariants conjecturally are expressions in the …
The notion of a Joyce structure was introduced in arXiv:1912.06504 to describe the geometric structure on the space of stability conditions of a CY3 category naturally encoded by the Donaldson-Thomas invariants. In this paper we show that a Joyce structure on a complex manifold defines a complex hyperkähler structure on the total space of its tangent bundle, and give a characterisation of the resulting hyperkähler metrics in geometric terms.
Consider $E$ a holomorphic vector bundle over a projective manifold $X$ polarized by an ample line bundle $L$. Fix $k$ large enough, the holomorphic sections $H^0(E\otimes L^k)$ provide embeddings of $X$ in a Grassmanian space. We define the \textit{balancing flow for bundles} as a flow on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of $X$. This flow can be seen as a flow of algebraic type hermitian metrics on $E$. At the quantum limit $k\to \infty$, we prove the convergence of the balancing flow towards the Donaldson heat flow, up to a conformal change. As a by-product, we obtain a numeri…
We prove an analogue of the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture in the context of SO(3) monopoles, obtaining a formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds using the SO(3)-monopole cobordism. The main technical difficulty in the SO(3)-monopole program relating the Seiberg-Witten and Donaldson invariants has been to compute intersection pairings on links of strata of reducible SO(3) monopoles, namely the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles lying in lower-level strata of the Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles [arXiv:dg-ga/9710…
For a smooth projective toric surface we determine the Donaldson invariants and their wallcrossing in terms of the Nekrasov partition function. Using the solution of the Nekrasov conjecture math.AG/0306198, hep-th/0306238, math.AG/0409441 and its refinement math.AG/0311058, we apply this result to give a generating function for the wallcrossing of Donaldson invariants of good walls of simply connected projective surfaces with $b_+=1$ in terms of modular forms. This formula was proved earlier in alg-geom/9506018 more generally for simply connected 4-manifolds with $b_+=1$, assuming the Kotschic…
We relate the Donaldson invariants of two four-manifolds $X_i$ with embedded Riemann surfaces of genus 2 and self-intersection zero with the invariants of the manifold X which appears as a connected sum along the surfaces. When the original manifolds are of simple type with $b_1=0$ and $b^+>1$, X is of simple type with $b_1=0$ and $b^+>1$ as well, and the relationship between the invariants is expressed as constraints in the basic classes for X. Also we give some applications. For instance, if $X_i$ have both $b_1=0$ then X is of simple type with $b_1=0$, $b^+>1$, and has no basic classes eval…
We study the path integral of a twisted $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled with hypermultiplet having the bare mass. We explicitly compute the topological correlation functions for the $SU(2)$ theory on a compact oriented simply connected simple type Riemann manifold with $b_2^+ \geq 3$. As the corollaries, we determine the topological correlation functions of the theory without the bare mass and those of the theory without coupling to the hypermultiplet. This includes a concrete field theoretic proof of the relation between the Donaldson and the Seiberg-Witten invariants.
In this paper we study the holomorphic Euler characteristics of determinant line bundles on moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable sheaves on an algebraic surface X, which can be viewed as $K$-theoretic versions of the Donaldson invariants. In particular, if X is a smooth projective toric surface, we determine these invariants and their wallcrossing in terms of the K-theoretic version of the Nekrasov partition function (called 5-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on a circle in the physics literature). Using the results of math.AG/0606180 we give an explicit generating funct…
We propose an explicit formula connecting Donaldson invariants and Seiberg-Witten invariants of a 4-manifold of simple type via Nekrasov's deformed partition function for the N=2 SUSY gauge theory with a single fundamental matter. This formula is derived from Mochizuki's formula, which makes sense and was proved when the 4-manifold is complex projective. Assuming our formula is true for a 4-manifold of simple type, we prove Witten's conjecture and sum rules for Seiberg-Witten invariants (superconformal simple type condition), conjectured by Mariño, Moore and Peradze.
There are two families of Donaldson invariants for the complex projective plane, corresponding to the SU(2)-gauge theory and the SO(3)-gauge theory with non-trivial Stiefel-Whitney class. In 1997 Moore and Witten conjectured that the regularized u-plane integral on the complex projective plane gives the generating functions for these invariants. In earlier work the second two authors proved the conjecture for the SO(3)-gauge theory. Here we complete the proof of the conjecture by confirming the claim for the SU(2)-gauge theory. As a consequence, we find that the SU(2) Donaldson invariants for …
We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^2, and we confirm their conjecture that it is the generating function for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. We prove this conjecture using the theory of mock theta functions and harmonic Maass forms. We also derive further such generating functions for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants with 2N_f massless monopoles using the geometry of certain rational elliptic surfaces (N_f=0,2,3,4). We show that the partition function for N_f=4 is nearly modular. When combined with one of Ramanujan's mock theta functions, we obtain a weight 1/…
We extend the Donaldson-Corlette-Hitchin-Simpson correspondence between Higgs bundles and flat connections on compact Kähler manifolds to compact quasi-regular Sasakian manifolds. A particular consequence is the translation of restrictions on Kähler groups proved using the Donaldson-Corlette-Hitchin-Simpson correspondence to fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds.
We solve a conjecture of Morgan and Szabo (Embedded genus 2 surfaces in four-manifolds, Preprint) about the relationship of the basic classes of two four-manifolds $X_i$ of simple type with $b_1=0$, $b^+>1$, such that there are embedded Riemann surfaces of genus $g \geq 2$ and self-intersection zero (and representing odd homology classes) with the basic classes of the manifold X which appears as a connected sum along the surfaces (supposing this latter one is of simple type). This is also expressed as constraints in the basic classes of X. The result is in accordance with the results on Seiber…
We present a Donaldson-Witten type field theory in eight dimensions on manifolds with $Spin(7)$ holonomy. We prove that the stress tensor is BRST exact for metric variations preserving the holonomy and we give the invariants for this class of variations. In six and seven dimensions we propose similar theories on Calabi-Yau threefolds and manifolds of $G_2$ holonomy respectively. We point out that these theories arise by considering supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory defined on such manifolds. The theories are invariant under metric variations preserving the holonomy structure without the need fo…
For each integer $N\geq 2$, Mariño and Moore defined generalized Donaldson invariants by the methods of quantum field theory, and made predictions about the values of these invariants. Subsequently, Kronheimer gave a rigorous definition of generalized Donaldson invariants using the moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections on hermitian vector bundles of rank $N$. In this paper, Mariño and Moore's predictions are confirmed for simply connected elliptic surfaces without multiple fibers and certain surfaces of general type in the case that $N=3$. The primary motivation is to study 3-manifold in…
Recently, Donaldson proved asymptotic stability for a polarized algebraic manifold $M$ with polarization class admitting a Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature, essentially when the linear algebraic part $H$ of $Aut^0(M)$ is semisimple. The purpose of this paper is to give a generalization of Donaldson's result to the case where the polarization class admits an extremal Kähler metric, even when $H$ is not semisimple.
We construct a mathematical framework for twisted N=2 supersymmetric topological quantum field theory on a 4-manifold. Supersymmetry in flat space is defined and the twist homomorphism is constructed, giving us a supermanifold that is the total space of an odd vector bundle over the even 4-manifold. A special category of connections on this space is defined and a decomposition into so-called component fields is proved. The twisted supersymmetric action is computed, and the structure of the action, the decomposition, and the action of a special odd vector field are all shown to have a rich geom…
We analyze the u-plane contribution to Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold X. For $b_2^+(X)>1$, this contribution vanishes, but for $b_2^+=1$, the Donaldson invariants must be written as the sum of a u-plane integral and an SW contribution. The u-plane integrals are quite intricate, but can be analyzed in great detail and even calculated. By analyzing the u-plane integrals, the relation of Donaldson theory to N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be described much more fully, the relation of Donaldson invariants to SW theory can be generalized to four-manifolds not of simple type, and i…
We generalize the analysis by Moore and Witten in [arXiv:hep-th/9709193], and consider integration over the u-plane in Donaldson theory with surface operators on a smooth four-manifold X. Several novel aspects will be developed in the process; like a physical interpretation of the "ramified" Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants, and the concept of curved surface operators which are necessarily topological at the outset. Elegant physical proofs -- rooted in R-anomaly cancellations and modular invariance over the u-plane -- of various seminal results in four-dimensional geometric topology obt…
Using quantum field-theoretic arguments, Witten has established a relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. In this survey article, we describe the program to prove this relation using a moduli space of PU(2) = SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles. We provide an overview of some of our transversality and Uhlenbeck compactness results for PU(2) monopoles, along with some of our calculations of Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants…
This article is based on a lecture by the first author at the International Georgia Topology Conference 2001 (Athens, Georgia) and the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2001 (Bonn, Germany). We sketch a proof of Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree c+2, with c = -{1/4}(7 chi + 11 sigma), for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where chi and sigma are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links …
The present article is the first in a series whose ultimate goal is to prove the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture concerning the wall-crossing formula for the Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold with b^+ = 1. The conjecture asserts that the wall-crossing terms due to changes in the metric depend at most on the homotopy type of the four-manifold and the degree of the invariant. Our principal interest in this conjecture is due to the fact that its proof is expected to resemble that of an important intermediate step towards a proof of Witten's conjecture concerning the relation between Donaldson a…
Recent developments in the understanding of $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions suggest a new point of view about Donaldson theory of four manifolds: instead of defining four-manifold invariants by counting $SU(2)$ instantons, one can define equivalent four-manifold invariants by counting solutions of a non-linear equation with an abelian gauge group. This is a ``dual'' equation in which the gauge group is the dual of the maximal torus of $SU(2)$. The new viewpoint suggests many new results about the Donaldson invariants.
