We prove an analogue of the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture in the context of SO(3) monopoles, obtaining a formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds using the SO(3)-monopole cobordism. The main technical difficulty in the SO(3)-monopole program relating the Seiberg-Witten and Donaldson invariants has been to compute intersection pairings on links of strata of reducible SO(3) monopoles, namely the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles lying in lower-level strata of the Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles [arXiv:dg-ga/9710032]. In this monograph, we prove --- modulo a gluing theorem which is an extension of our earlier work in [arXiv:math/9907107] --- that these intersection pairings can be expressed in terms of topological data and Seiberg-Witten invariants of the four-manifold. This conclusion is analogous to the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture concerning the wall-crossing formula for Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold with $b_2^+=1$; that wall-crossing formula and the resulting structure of Donaldson invariants for four-manifolds with $b_2^+=1$ were established, assuming the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture, by Goettsche [arXiv:alg-geom/9506018] and Goettsche and Zagier [arXiv:alg-geom/9612020]. In this monograph, we reduce the proof of the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture to an extension of previously established gluing theorems for anti-self-dual SO(3) connections (see [arXiv:math/9812060] and references therein). Since the first version of our monograph was circulated, applications of our results have appeared in the proof of Property P for knots by Kronheimer and Mrowka [arXiv:math/0311489] and work of Sivek on Donaldson invariants for symplectic four-manifolds [arXiv:1301.0377].
We generalize Witten's conjectured formula relating Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants to manifolds of non-simple type, via equivariant localization techniques. This approach does not use the theory of non-abelian monopoles, but works directly on the Donaldson-Witten and Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces. We give a formal derivation of Witten's conjecture and its generalization, making use of an infinite dimensional version of the abelian localization theorem.
Using Morse-Bott techniques adapted to the gauge-theoretic setting, we show that the limiting boundary values of the space of finite energy monopoles on a connected 3-manifold with at least two cylindrical ends provides an immersed Lagrangian submanifold of the vortex moduli space at infinity. By studying the signed intersections of such Lagrangians, we supply the analytic details of Donaldson's TQFT construction of the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold.
We use Donaldson invariants of regular surfaces with p_g >0 to make quantitative statements about modulispaces of stable rank 2 sheaves. We give two examples: a quantitative existence theorem for stable bundles, and a computation of the rank of the canonical holomorphic two forms on the moduli space. The results are in some sense dual to the Donaldson and O'Grady non vanishing theorems because they use the Donaldson series of the surface as _input_. Results in purely algebraic geometric terms can be obtained by using the explicit form of the Donaldson series of the surface. The Donaldson serie…
In this note, we present a proof of Donaldson's Diagonalization Theorem via an abelian gauge-theoretic variant of the Seiberg-Witten equations for multiple spinors. Like the other proof of Donaldson's theorem using the standard Seiberg-Witten theory, Elkies' theorem also plays a key role in our argument.
Witten's conjecture suggests that the polynomial invariants of Donaldson are expressible in terms of the Seiberg-Witten invariants if the underlying four-manifold is of simple type. A higher rank version of the Donaldson invariants was introduced by Kronheimer. Before even having been defined, the physicists Mariño and Moore had already suggested that there should be a generalisation of Witten's conjecture to this type of invariants. We study a generalisation of the classical cobordism program to the higher rank situation and obtain vanishing results which gives evidence that the generalisatio…
This article provides a summary of arXiv:1701.08899 and arXiv:1701.08902 where the authors studied the enumerative geometry of nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves on algebraic surfaces and their connections to threefold theories, and in particular relevant Donaldson-Thomas, Vafa-Witten and Seiberg-Witten theories.
We propose an explicit formula connecting Donaldson invariants and Seiberg-Witten invariants of a 4-manifold of simple type via Nekrasov's deformed partition function for the N=2 SUSY gauge theory with a single fundamental matter. This formula is derived from Mochizuki's formula, which makes sense and was proved when the 4-manifold is complex projective. Assuming our formula is true for a 4-manifold of simple type, we prove Witten's conjecture and sum rules for Seiberg-Witten invariants (superconformal simple type condition), conjectured by Mariño, Moore and Peradze.
This article is based on a lecture by the first author at the International Georgia Topology Conference 2001 (Athens, Georgia) and the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2001 (Bonn, Germany). We sketch a proof of Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree c+2, with c = -{1/4}(7 chi + 11 sigma), for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where chi and sigma are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links …
A famous conjecture in gauge theory mathematics, attributed to Witten, suggests that the polynomial invariants of Donaldson are expressible in terms of the Seiberg-Witten invariants if the underlying four-manifold is of simple type. Mathematicians have sought a proof of the conjecture by means of a `cobordism program' involving $PU(2)$ monopoles. A higher rank version of the Donaldson invariants was recently introduced by Kronheimer. Before being defined, the physicists Mariño and Moore had already suggested that there should be a generalisation of Witten's conjecture to this type of invariant…
We generalize the analysis by Moore and Witten in [arXiv:hep-th/9709193], and consider integration over the u-plane in Donaldson theory with surface operators on a smooth four-manifold X. Several novel aspects will be developed in the process; like a physical interpretation of the "ramified" Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants, and the concept of curved surface operators which are necessarily topological at the outset. Elegant physical proofs -- rooted in R-anomaly cancellations and modular invariance over the u-plane -- of various seminal results in four-dimensional geometric topology obt…
We prove Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree $c+2$, with $c=-{1/4}(7χ+11σ)$, for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where $χ$ and $σ$ are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links of the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles. Gluing techniques allow us to compute contributions from Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces lying in the first (or `one-bubble') level of the Uhlenbeck compactific…
We show that the SO(3) monopole cobordism formula from Feehan and Leness (2002) implies that all smooth, closed, oriented four-manifolds with $b^1=0$ and $b^+\geq 3$ and odd with Seiberg-Witten simple type satisfy the superconformal simple type condition defined by Marino, Moore, and Peradze (1999) This implies the lower bound, conjectured by Fintushel and Stern (2001) on the number of Seiberg-Witten basic classes in terms of topological data.
Casson-type invariants emerging from Donaldson theory over certain negative definite 4-manifolds were recently suggested by Andrei Teleman. These are defined by a count of a zero-dimensional moduli space of flat instantons. Motivated by the cobordism program of proving Witten's conjecture, we use a moduli space of PU(2) Seiberg-Witten monopoles to exhibit an oriented one-dimensional cobordism of the instanton moduli space to the empty space. The Casson-type invariant must therefore vanish.
We solve a conjecture of Morgan and Szabo (Embedded genus 2 surfaces in four-manifolds, Preprint) about the relationship of the basic classes of two four-manifolds $X_i$ of simple type with $b_1=0$, $b^+>1$, such that there are embedded Riemann surfaces of genus $g \geq 2$ and self-intersection zero (and representing odd homology classes) with the basic classes of the manifold X which appears as a connected sum along the surfaces (supposing this latter one is of simple type). This is also expressed as constraints in the basic classes of X. The result is in accordance with the results on Seiber…
We prove a conjecture of Hutchings and Lee relating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold X with b_1 > 0 to an invariant that `counts' gradient flow lines--including closed orbits--of a circle-valued Morse function on the manifold. The proof is based on a method described by Donaldson for computing the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds by making use of a `topological quantum field theory,' which makes the calculation completely explicit. We also realize a version of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of X as the intersection number of a pair of totally real submanifolds of a pr…
We determine the local equivalence class of the Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy type of a spin rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ embedded into a spin rational homology $S^{1} \times S^{3}$ with a positive scalar curvature metric so that $Y$ generates the third homology. The main tool of the proof is a relative Bauer-Furuta-type invariant on a periodic-end 4-manifold. As a consequence, we give obstructions to positive scalar curvature metrics on spin rational homology $S^{1} \times S^{3}$, typically described as the coincidence of various Frøyshov-type invariants. This coincidence also yields…
We prove new adjunction inequalities for embedded surfaces in four-manifolds with non-negative self-intersection number by using the Donaldson invariants. These formulas are completely analogous to the ones obtained by Ozsváth and Szabó using the Seiberg-Witten invariants. To prove these relations, we give a fairly explicit description of the structure of the Fukaya-Floer homology of a surface times a circle. As an aside, we also relate the Floer homology of a surface times a circle with the cohomology of some symmetric products of the surface.
Using quantum field-theoretic arguments, Witten has established a relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. In this survey article, we describe the program to prove this relation using a moduli space of PU(2) = SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles. We provide an overview of some of our transversality and Uhlenbeck compactness results for PU(2) monopoles, along with some of our calculations of Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants…
The main theorem describes the behaviour of the stable cohomotopy invariant defined in the first article (joint with M. Furuta) in this series of two under the operation of taking connected sums of four-manifolds: The invariant of a connected sum is the smash product (in the sense of equivariant spectra) of the invariants of the respective summands. This provides nonvanishing results even in cases in which both the integer valued Seiberg-Witten invariants and Donaldson invariants have to vanish. As a consequence, one gets new results on diffeomorphism types of decomposable four-manifolds.
In this article we complete the proof---for a broad class of four-manifolds---of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 4--7 of an earlier version, while a revision of sections 1--3 of that earlier version now appear in a separate companion article (math.DG/0007190). Here, we use our computations of Chern classes for the virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten …
We study the Seiberg-Witten invariant $λ_{\rm{SW}} (X)$ of smooth spin $4$-manifolds $X$ with integral homology of $S^1\times S^3$ defined by Mrowka, Ruberman, and Saveliev as a signed count of irreducible monopoles amended by an index-theoretic correction term. We prove a splitting formula for this invariant in terms of the Frøyshov invariant $h(X)$ and a certain Lefschetz number in the reduced monopole Floer homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We apply this formula to obstruct existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature on certain 4-manifolds, and to exhibit new classes of integral homo…
In this article, we study a generalisation of the Seiberg-Witten equations, replacing the spinor representation with a hyperKahler manifold equipped with certain symmetries. Central to this is the construction of a (non-linear) Dirac operator acting on the sections of the non-linear fibre-bundle. For hyperKahler manifolds admitting a hyperKahler potential, we derive a transformation formula for the Dirac operator under the conformal change of metric on the base manifold. As an application, we show that when the hyperKahler manifold is of dimension four, then away from a singular set, the equat…
The SO(3)-monopole program, initiated by Pidstrigatch and Tyurin [arXiv:dg-ga/9507004], yields a relationship between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants through a cobordism between the moduli spaces defining these invariants. The main technical difficulty in this program lies in describing the links of singularities in this cobordism arising from the Seiberg-Witten moduli subspaces. In related articles, we defined maps which, essentially, define normal bundles of strata of these singularities. The link in question is then the boundary of the union of the tubular neighborhoods associat…
Let $X$ be a smooth, closed, connected, orientable four-manifold with $b^1(X)=0$ and $b^+(X)\geq 3$ and odd. We show that if $X$ has Seiberg-Witten simple type, then the SO(3)-monopole cobordism formula of Feehan and Leness (2002) implies Witten's Conjecture relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants.
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
We introduce the concept of Spin^G-structure in a SO-bundle, where $G\subset U(V)$ is a compact Lie group containing $-id_V$. We study and classify $Spin^G(4)$-structures on 4-manifolds, we introduce the G-Monopole equations associated with a $Spin^G$-structure. On Kaehler surfaces a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence can be proved for the corresponding moduli spaces. Using this complex geometric interpretation, we determine explicitely a moduli space of "PU(2)-Monopoles" on $¶^2$, we describe its Uhlenbeck compactification, as well as the Donaldson- and the abelian locus.
We establish constraints on the topology of smooth Lefschetz fibrations with $4$-dimensional fibers, by studying the family Bauer-Furuta invariant. To compute this invariant, we analyze the framed bordism class of 1-dimensional Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces using the local index theorem by Bismut-Freed. Using this, we deduce new obstructions to the smooth isotopy to the identity for compositions of Dehn twists on $(-2)$-spheres in closed $4$-manifolds. We obtain several applications: (1) We exhibit the first examples of closed simply-connected symplectic $4$-manifolds admitting Torelli symplect…
This is the first of two articles in which we give a proof - for a broad class of four-manifolds - of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 1-3 of an earlier version of the article dg-ga/9712005, now split into two parts, while a revision of sections 4-7 of that earlier version appears in a recently updated dg-ga/9712005. In the present article, we construct virtual…
This is the third installment in our series of articles (dg-ga/9712005, dg-ga/9710032) on the application of the PU(2) monopole equations to prove Witten's conjecture (hep-th/9411102) concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. The moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations provides a noncompact cobordism between links of compact moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles of Seiberg-Witten type and the moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections, which appear as singularities in this larger moduli space. In this paper we prove …
We prove that Witten's Conjecture [arXiv:hep-th/9411102] on the relationship between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series for a four-manifold of Seiberg-Witten simple type with $b_1=0$ and odd $b_2^+\geq 3$ follows from our $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-monopole cobordism formula [arXiv:math/0203047] when the four-manifold has $c_1^2\geq χ_h-3$ or is abundant.
We construct a mathematical framework for twisted N=2 supersymmetric topological quantum field theory on a 4-manifold. Supersymmetry in flat space is defined and the twist homomorphism is constructed, giving us a supermanifold that is the total space of an odd vector bundle over the even 4-manifold. A special category of connections on this space is defined and a decomposition into so-called component fields is proved. The twisted supersymmetric action is computed, and the structure of the action, the decomposition, and the action of a special odd vector field are all shown to have a rich geom…
In these lectures we present a general introduction to topological quantum field theories. These theories are discussed in the framework of the Mathai-Quillen formalism and in the context of twisted N=2 supersymmetric theories. We discuss in detail the recent developments in Donaldson-Witten theory obtained from the application of results based on duality for N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. This involves a description of the computation of Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants. Generalizations of Donaldson-Witten theory are reviewed, and the structure of the vacuum…
We prove the existence of perturbations for the PU(2) monopole equations, yielding transversality on the complement of the anti-self-dual or reducible solutions, and the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of solutions to these perturbed PU(2) monopole equations. In December 1994, V. Pidstrigach and A. Tyurin and then others proposed a method to prove Witten's conjecture concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. Their proposal uses a moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations, which are a nat…
The present article is the first in a series whose ultimate goal is to prove the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture concerning the wall-crossing formula for the Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold with b^+ = 1. The conjecture asserts that the wall-crossing terms due to changes in the metric depend at most on the homotopy type of the four-manifold and the degree of the invariant. Our principal interest in this conjecture is due to the fact that its proof is expected to resemble that of an important intermediate step towards a proof of Witten's conjecture concerning the relation between Donaldson a…
Mutation is an operation on 3-manifolds containing an embedded surface of genus 2. It is defined by cutting along the surface and regluing using the `hyperelliptic' involution, and is known to preserve many 3-manifold invariants. I show that mutation of a homology 3-sphere preserves its (instanton) Floer homology, and that a related operation on 4-manifolds preserves the Donaldson invariants. A companion article (in preparation) will treat invariants based on the Seiberg-Witten equations.
We obtain constraints on the topology of families of smooth $4$-manifolds arising from a finite dimensional approximation of the families Seiberg-Witten monopole map. Amongst other results these constraints include a families generalisation of Donaldson's diagonalisation theorem and Furuta's $10/8$ theorem. As an application we construct examples of continuous $\mathbb{Z}_p$-actions for any odd prime $p$, which can not be realised smoothly. As a second application we show that the inclusion of the group of diffeomorphisms into the group of homeomorphisms is not a weak homotopy equivalence for …
We generalise the analysis in [arXiv:0904.1744] to superspace, and explicitly prove that for any embedding of surface operators in a general, twisted N=2 pure abelian theory on an arbitrary four-manifold, the parameters transform naturally under the SL(2,Z) duality of the theory. However, for nontrivially-embedded surface operators, exact S-duality holds if and only if the "quantum" parameter effectively vanishes, while the overall SL(2,Z) duality holds up to a c-number at most, regardless. Nevertheless, this observation sets the stage for a physical proof of a remarkable mathematical result b…
We continue our program initiated in [arXiv:0912.4261] to consider supersymmetric surface operators in a topologically-twisted N=2 pure SU(2) gauge theory, and apply them to the study of four-manifolds and related invariants. Elegant physical proofs of various seminal theorems in four-manifold theory obtained by Ozsvath-Szabo [2,3] and Taubes [4], will be furnished. In particular, we will show that Taubes' groundbreaking and difficult result -- that the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants are in fact the Gromov invariants which count pseudo-holomorphic curves embedded in a symplectic four-manif…
I review some recent results on four-manifold invariants which have been obtained in the context of topological quantum field theory. I focus on three different aspects: (a) the computation of correlation functions, which give explicit results for the Donaldson invariants of non-simply connected manifolds, and for generalizations of these invariants to the gauge group SU(N); (b) compactifications to lower dimensions, and relations with three-manifold topology and with intersection theory on the moduli space of flat connections on Riemann surfaces; (c) four-dimensional theories with critical be…
Nonlinear analysis has played a prominent role in the recent developments in geometry and topology. The study of the Yang-Mills equation and its cousins gave rise to the Donaldson invariants and more recently, the Seiberg-Witten invariants. Those invariants have enabled us to prove a number of striking results for low dimensional manifolds, particularly, 4-manifolds. The theory of Gromov-Witten invariants was established by using solutions of the Cauchy-Riemann equation. These solutions are often refered as pseudo-holomorphic maps which are special minimal surfaces studied long in geometry. It…
We prove that the moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations is a smooth manifold of the expected dimension for simple, generic parameters such as (and including) the Riemannian metric on the given four-manifold. In a previous article, dg-ga/9710032, we proved transversality using an extension of the holonomy-perturbation methods of Donaldson, Floer, and Taubes, together with the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the perturbed moduli space. However, it remained an important and interesting question to see whether there were simpler, more intrinsic alternatives to th…
